Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Alright, then I'm going to run this exploit I thought of by you to see if you think it would work. HMP cyberdevils can share data with each other anywhere, so if we used something like a Technology Excellency to build an unholy hybrid of a wireless router and a cell phone tower and used HMP on it, would that allow Clippy to get access to internet and cell service from literally anywhere including the NeverNever so we wouldn't have to create a custom charm for the task? Because that's something people want and it seems workable.

That would work but if you want literal worldwide coverage and the Nevernever you will need an artifact.

- [X] Ask Arawn how confident he is of staying ahead of Mab, suggest that we may be able to come up with a solution in the next couple of months if he works with us.

Can we afford Essence 3 and The THousand and Oneth Hell? That would be a great place for Lydia and Arawn to hide out from Mab.

I also wonder if we can use VEE on Arawn to remove his Enemy - Mab Flaw.

Did Arawn already ice corpsetaker, and if he did can we use another ghost to fuel the ritual?

[X] Point out that even if he gets away this time they will never be safe from Mab unless they reach some kind of deal
-[X] Explain how we suspect Lydia is part of Mab's plans, and how she too won't be safe from her unless some sort of deal is reached.
-[X] Propose the mantle swap
--[X] Explain how it can be done without (permanent) harm
--[X] Ask Matthews if he's interested. Point out how it would protect him from Kemmlerite retribution.
-[X] Use social excellency
-[X] Stunt: "No, though not wholly for your sake. Tyrant she may be, but that does not make you less a traitor. You who were once a king broke your bonds of fealty. You who were once and may yet be a defender of the dead broke bread with their greatest defiler and bartered for godhood. An act that allowed for the greatest advancement and proliferation of necromancy in the modern era."
—[X] Molly looks him in the eyes, searching for the man behind the mask "If in ages past one of yours had done as you have, as Holt had, would you hold them blameless?" She says with a heavy sigh. " Knowing your daughter makes me want to believe in your better nature, that I misunderstand some of what I've seen, but I find it hard to trust that"
—[X] " However, what she would do to you is not justice, and the innocent in and around your life do not deserve to be caught in it either. "
—[X] "None of you will know peace or safety until a new accord can be reached"

This may be too confrontational, but I think it's worth noting that Arawn is a traitor by the value systems of his time and ours and that what he did had consequences.

Especially since he's trying to play us so obviously. We can work with him, but I don't want to deal with him trying to manipulate us by playing like he's an innocent being cruelly bullied by Mab.

Edit:

I'll probably put a better version of something like this up later. I just don't have the time to clean it up more now since I'm doing this during my lunch break.

So, now that I have access to the PDF here is a revised wish list.

[] Plan Combat and social
-[] Lanka Charm: By Rage Recast (••):
Gives you access to another Shintai Aspect in your human form 6 XP
--[] Flight
-[] Lanka Charm: Scar-Writ Saga Shield (•):
Permanently lowers the difficulty of all soak rolls by one. 3XP
-[] Lanka Charm: Ox-Body Technique (•): Permanently gains two Wounded (–2), one Mauled (–2), and one Crippled (–5) health levels. 3 XP
-[] Lanka Charm: Viridian Legend Exoskeleton (••): Adds the highest of her Strength, Stamina, or Charisma to her soak rolls for the rest of the scene, but raises the difficulty of all Stealth attempts by +1. 6 XP
-[] The Hell of Burrowing Maggots Charm: Mercy in Servitude (•): Our minions no longer suffer torment while serving our will. 4 XP
-[] The Hell of Burrowing Maggots Charm: Demonic Primacy of Essence (•): Lesser Creatures of Darkness recognize your dread majesty making it easier to sway them. All social rolls with such beings reduced by 2. 4 XP

So 26 xp and gives us a good way to get minions and a social ability when dealing with "Lesser" creatures of darkness which include all beings that qualify for that moniker which are of lesser power than ancient vampires, Maeljin Incarnae, Yama Kings, Malfeans, the greatest of Black Spiral Dancer heroes, other Exalted, and the like. Jaggling or Gaffling-level Banes and all fomori are always lesser beings.

Mercy in Servitude allows us to get the White Court vampires as our minions and "fixes" them. Here is the relevant quote.
I love eeeet

Like, they just planned and attempted to blackmail the actual experienced god by threatening the family, something which he also fears. If you want manipulation, make it in terms of 'eternal soul this', 'hunt them down that' instead of this 'you'll be safe' nonsense, even in the winter faction.

You're all also assuming that Arawn will actually want to shed the mantle. I suppose that'll be in the realm of dice-rolls.

OOC:If it seems like Arawn is appealing to your nature as a rowdy Colonial... that is because he is doing that.
Now I'm imagining Mab making a counter-argument appealing to the fact of the Confederacy attempting to declare independence and being coerced back in line. :p

Then Arawn objects that the Confederacy was trying to preserve slavery, and Mab retorts that the Union didn't invade to abolish slavery, that was a side effect of Union invading to subjugate the Confederacy.

IDK, is Lydia actually part of Mabs plans?
The answer comes clinking like frozen gears turning in a distant hall far off: "Queen Mab means to transfer the mantle of the Ankou to his daughter who willl then serve her in exchange for her father's life, thus will she have vengeance of for the remaining span of his days and a servant she can more easily mold to her whims"
We used the Crown to get the certainty.
Something we are trying to keep secret, which is why we are presenting it as a best guess.

I'm not sure why Matthews would want to become the Eldest Ankou. Doing so is likely to at best significantly compromise his free will, and by doing so he and his grandchildren will be under threat from both the Kemmlerites, who will be after him to eat him, and also from Mab, as she can and will threaten his grandchildren to get additional leverage over him.

It's a shit deal for him. If he's wanted immortality that badly, he could have figuratively sold his soul to the Kemmlerites and been a necromancer, rather than literally selling his soul to Mab.

Yeah thats wrong.
We can literally get a civilization full of minions at E3 that we can spec as Loyal or Fanatical, with a significant percentage as explicit supernaturals. We can feed people and animals food and make them into loyal fomori.

Infernals play differently from Solars.

Fomori are shit though, and that's the type of supernatural you can get from the Thousand and Oneth Hell. Solars and Abyssals can make vastly better minions.

The Kemmlerites are not interested in the Eldest Ankou's mantle exept as a foe, as far as I can tell.

They wanted Arawn for his unique mortal/divinity whatever gained with Kemmlers help.

I'm not impressed with Arawn. At all.

Not willing to condemn Lydia over him either.

Edit: but if we reveal we know Mabs plan- people will start to question *how* we know. We've been warned over and over to keep the intellectus secret.

So, some comments about the chapter:
1) The description of the Exaltation as a "reverse mantle" is something I like very much. In a way, Molly is her exaltation's mantle or something very close to it. The thing that defines the role of the mantle's bearer, something that empowers, constraints, directs. Yes, it fits very well. And it also fits with the fundamental difference in the purpose of the mantles and exaltations. Mantles are the tools intended to preserve the status quo of the world in the basest of meanings - to preserve the world itself. Exaltations are the weapons of the first and greatest revolution. They are the bringers of change, whether said change is constructive, transformative or destructive.

Mantles are, in a way, anti-exaltations.
2) Arawn can't tell what our exaltation is, but he can guess a lot. He can tell that it's a "seer's crown" at a glance. So, Mab is very likely to know that our accurate guesses come from being able to scry her, whether we tell her or not.
3) Arawn is familiar with Lanka, based on the quote "there is am flame I know, but only from its bindings now broken.".

I like the honesty.
He didn't threaten Dresden, he outright told him he'll pur him in a coma if it comes down to it.
That's confidence.

Also I did like that he immediatly did his job with the lingering ghosts, even while there's still danger from Dresden calling Her.
You can say that he abandoned his duty to Winter, but between going after Capri and now helping the guard's souls I'd say he's at least loyal to his duty as a psychopomp.
1)More like a bluff.
He got mousetrapped and trussed up like a lamb to the slaughter by Kattrin and the Corpsetaker.
He has no allies.

Immediately threatening a member of the rescue team seems unwise at best, and presupposes he's strong enough to punch through the mental defenses of the guy who fucked over the Darkhallow last year.

2)Like I said, I know very little about his motives.
You might be right. The deal with Kemmler keeps in the forefront of my brain though.
And I'm not at all missing that he's trying to manipulate us; he timed that question about tyrants for Lydia's return.

Lydia may be our friend. Arawn has thus far only proven to be the enemy of our enemy.
He picked out Harry because he could tell that he's working for Mab.
His words to us and Gard are about getting us on his side, he knows he can't do that with someone in debt to Mab.
Nah.
Harry is doing a job for Mab is not the same thing as Harry being in debt to Mab.
We know about the debt; he doesnt.

Besides, Harry has been Mab's Emissary before, during Summer Knight.
Thats should be common knowledge among supernaturals.
That would work but if you want literal worldwide coverage and the Nevernever you will need an artifact.
Yeah.
Charm's better.
I'm not sure why Matthews would want to become the Eldest Ankou.
Because it provides protection from his old associates coming to force him back into service, like just happened with Kattrin.
Because it means he has the full force of Winter behind him as backup when necessary.
Because it provides a living and protection for his grandkids until they grow up.
Because its insurance against the White Council misunderstanding the events here and seeking to punish him.

Elaine Mallory went into service with the Summer Court for protection after fleeing DuMorne for much the same reason.
Fomori are shit though, and that's the type of supernatural you can get from the Thousand and Oneth Hell. Solars and Abyssals can make vastly better minions.
Its entirely dependent on which type of Fomori you get. Your 1-2 Gift mook is a very different matter from a 6-Gift Ferectoi.
And no, they arent the only type of supernatural you get, just an example; the option says, and I quote:
Resident Devils: The Realm has a significant population of superhuman beings such as bakemono and wicked spirits.
What types of supernaturals are there is a matter of game balance and QM fiat.

There could be a small population of fomori and psychics.
Or we could have more wizards than the White Council. Or a breeding population of lesser dragons. Or a bunch of Incarna-level spirits. Even a bunch of former inhabitants of the Thousand Hells like Shikome Assassins is a fairly potent set of enforcers.

Thats a matter of QM fiat.

He has Wards specifically against Fae at his home.

He won't be interested.

Pretty sure that one's a bit out there.
The Yama Kings are the only things close to being Incarna-level spirits in their Hells.

But yeah, the local spirits can be pretty good in their own right.
Looking at Shikome, or Lanka's Rakshasa or the Wicked City's cyborg-assassin things, there are powerful things down there.

That's certainly true, but not a mark against him in my book.
He's in a bad position, even if he seems confident. He plays what cards he has.

His situation might actually be better if dad were here, but that's idle speculation.

It is worth keeping in mind that per Corpsetaker the mental defenses of the White Council's wardens are terrible for their potential skill level because they do not practice properly for fear of the Laws. Harry had plenty of raw will on this side, but that is about all he has... unless he is willing to cut a deal with Lash for a boost, but there is no way Arawn can know about her.

He won't be interested.
One of his grandkids was kidnapped by Thule Society operatives, he was coerced out of retirement and he literally got mindjacked to almost sacrifice himself in a blood ritual until we got there and interfered.
Theres's good odds he is undergoing a rapid threat reassessment of whats more hazardous to his life and family.

Pretty sure that one's a bit out there.

Are we talking the same thing?
Incarna-level spirits in World of Darkness are not the same thing as Incarna-level spirits from Exalted.
They're a rank below Celestine-level spirits
whitewolf.fandom.com

Incarna (WOD)

Incarna is a term used by the Fera to describe a certain class of spirits; weaker than the Celestines, but still greater spirits by any measure. An Incarna is a powerful spirit among the denizens of the Umbra, usually a servant to a Celestine servings as servants, warriors, and advisors to those...

1)Good bluff sure. Dude's more than a thousand years old; he kinda has to have a good poker face.
2)Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on how fair Michael thinks he's playing. Really hard to lie to a Knight's face when they are on the job

Oh sure, they arent anywhere near where they should be against an insidious threat like the Corpsetaker.
But something like a straight mental attack, they seem to be pretty good against.
Wizards have been walking through Blampire and phobophage mind whammies for decades.

And critically, Arawn is in no position to know what current WC mental training standards are like.
Corpsetaker used to be White Council, so she had a good idea, and knew how to defeat it.
Arawn wasnt.

Right, mixed those up.
I thought Incarna were the highest tier.
Thanks.

He just claimed Capricorpus just as he did those poor museum workers, although she was far less willing... her insights may not be that far from him. Also in terms of the nature of his powers, sleep and death are not so distant kin Hypnos was brother to Thanatos. Just because he lost to a bunch of Kemlerities who had a plan and awareness of his weakness it does not mean Arawn is fundamentally weaker than them in all things.
