Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

errr... power armor is a thing both in Exalted and in WoD. Hell, Wicked City has Demons of Steel and Violence that are basically cyborgs. Now, power armor would still be very suspicious and conspicuous, so there is that.
But, if needed, MC could easily make a huge armored robot and animate it with electric devil charms.
Yes, power armor is native to both Ex2 and WoD. So are cyborgs. However ExWoD is a little lower powered.

And even in those two settings, they required significant setup and infrastructure to keep them running; Myrmidon Carapaces were Jadeborn only, you barely saw Gunzosha outside of Lookshy in Ex2, anything better required lots of hearthstones and the infrastructure to maintain the manse network.

And the WoD Technocracy did not exactly spam Alansons and HITMark VIs post-Avatar Storm.

You're more likely to see a lowend Crysis suit/Venom symbiote here in this setting than something out of Iron Man. And for Demon Empress Molly Carpenter, this doesnt really make sense as an investment. Not when she doesnt have any way to carry power armor inconspicuously, to put it on or off quickly, and it doesnt really do much that a couple charm purchases wont.

And I dont think Molly wants to spend much of her weekends pulling maintenance either.
The people who did chargen didnt spec a mad scientist.
We arent going to change her high concept instory now.

why bother? I would go with sticking electricity demon into stunner. This way you can fire bolts of lightning when needed. Also can be charged by plugging into socket or layline. Electricity demons can draw power from electricity. Just expensive to do that at home. XD
Range.
People in melee range can catch these hands. Dudes on top of buildings with sniper rifles, in cars doing drivebys, or even flying in the sky throwing flaming monkey poo(real case!) require other solutions.

We can either be superfast, or learn to fire magic lasers, or make a gun.
With the benefit that the gun wont stand out the way that a magic laser will, if you're trying to stay a little covert, and is a relatively cheap dip.

Arcana 101

Arcana are beings created for one purpose or another by means of magic. There are three types of arcana we can make(Golems, Simulacra, and Emanations). If the draft chapter is indicative, they are unlocked with the same charm as prodigies.

Common Qualities of Arcana(Exceptions can exist):
1. Arcana Come into existence able to perform their functions
2. Arcana possess a general understanding of the world.
3. Arcana do not possess specific knowledge outside of their intended functions.
4. Arcana are able to learn things
5. Arcana are loyal to their creator. As an intrinsic quality of being, Arcana will obey both the
letter and spirit (to the best of their understanding) of their creator's instructions. Moreover, they
generally wish to protect and promote the interests of their creator. This is not an invincible
quality, particularly in the case of older, more intelligent and strong-willed Arcana. It is difficult,
but possible, to fray an Arcana's loyalty through protracted abuse.
6. The Loyalty of an Arcana is transferable(They can be gifted, though the loyalty becomes less absolute with each owner it passes between)
7. Authority over an Arcana can be delegated(It will always weigh others requests against what it considers to be its owners interests)

Besides the Unique qualities, Arcana are built the same way for their dot rating, regardless of type.

Golems

Step 1: Design Phase
This is an extended roll involving intelligence+Occult, or in the case of tech based Golems/Simulacra, Intelligence+Technology. The Design is not reusable. The Difficulty is 9, each roll represents a week of work, the goal is (Arcana rating X 3) Successes

Step 2: Gather Resources
Purchasing materials suitable for a Golem necessitates a resources rating 1 dot over the Golem's rating. 5 Dot Golems are Resources 5, and additionally necessitate the sacrifice of a suitable 3 dot prodigy or item of equivalent power.

Step 3: Make the Golem
Making a Golem necessitates a workshop inside a Dragon Nest. This needs an extended Crafts or Technology roll depending on the approach(1 week intervals).

Step 4: Animation Ritual
The final step is a ritual to animate the golem. This takes 1 to 5 hours, is essence intensive, and ends in an intelligence+occult roll. This temporarily exhausts a Dragon Nest, except in the event of a botch with permanently exhausts it.

Unique Qualities of Golems: Golems can heal in a dragon nest, otherwise necessitating manual repair by us or someone qualified to do so(Harry Might count). 2 dots bonus Strength and Stamina, capable of taking those over 5. No Mental Attributes over 5 ever. No appearance higher than 3. Obviously inhuman and made of inanimate materials. Can soak Lethal but not aggravated damage.

Simulacra

Design Phase: As Golem
Resources: Highly Variable. Elegant Golem/Android type simulacra necessitate materials worth resources 3, resources 4 for a 3 dot simulacra and resources 5 for a 4 or 5 dot simulacra. Clones necessitate a resources 5 specialized lab or an apparatus level gadget to help the process, along with genetic material. Frankenstein type Simulacra are made of corpses
Making the Simulacra(Dragon nest workshop required): Extended Dexterity+Crafts(Animated Masterworks/Golems/etc, 1 week intervals), Intelligence+Technology(Androids, 1 month intervals), Intelligence+Science(Clones, 1 month intervals), (Dexterity or Intelligence)+Medicine for corpse people(1 Day intervals)
Animation Ritual: As Golem

Unique Qualities of Clones: Clone type simulacra are essentially normal people. Being clones doesn't grant them anything unique. They heal like normal people when damaged.

Unique Qualities of Corpse type Simulacra: Corpse type Simulacra experience significant social penalties(-2 to social rolls for interacting with ordinary people due to creeping people out, appearance capped at 5), have an additional bruised health level, and can soak lethal damage. They heal like normal people. Their loyalty is also weaker than that of other Arcana. Corpse type simulacra look like what they are at appearance 1. At appearance 2 they look like they needed extensive reconstructive surgery after an accident.

Unique qualities of Golem/Android type Simulacra: Can soak lethal damage. Can pass as human through various means, though this may fail in violent or extremely stressful situations. They heal like Golems.

Emanations

Design Phase: As Golem
Resources: Needs a keystone, which can be any small item of great emotional(Not necessarily to Molly) or financial value. 5 Dot Phantasms need a 2 dot prodigy as the keystone.
Making the Emanation(Dragon nest workshop required): Extended (Charisma or Intelligence)+Occult roll at 2 week intervals.
Animation Ritual: As Golem

Unique Qualities of Emanations: Can soak lethal damage. Are always otherworldly, disturbing, demonic looking beings that cannot pass as human. Emanations have a native home, I'm not sure where it is in this cosmology but I suspect it to be Between(Where Dresden's Ghost was). The Emanation can roam freely, interact with other residents of its native realm, and navigate without undue difficulty.

Emanations heal like mortals.

An emanation can manifest in the physical world within 10 yards of us, or 100 yards of its keystone.

Emanations die with their keystone. If they are slain otherwise, they spend 100 years reconstituting themselves within the keystone, accelerated by 10 years per point of essence we invest in the process.

The sentence is kind of ambiguous but I think we've got some kind of long range communication linked to the emanations name too?
If the phantasm's master the emanation's name, the Arcana hears her words wherever it may be.

Emanations spend 1 willpower to manifest for a scene without our summoning or teleport to us without our prompting. If we prompt them, they can teleport to us or their keystone and manifest without paying willpower.

Emanations can treat our hell as a keystone if we have created it.

in fairness even a fair few people don't know the exact mechanics of how dresden fights all the time. Also we're exalted we have far far more ways to fight then dresden ever will predicting us is almost impossible.
People don't know everything about it, but they learned enough over time to screw with him.

The whole reason he almost lost his hand is because some black court vampires led by one he'd fought before bought some napalm to see if that would be more effective than trying to shoot through his force shield.

They don't need to know everything to observe the effects of what we're doing and act on it.

Then what's the solution for a situation where someone pins us between two groups of gunmen, possibly with another sniper involved?

If we're alone then we can run around as we please, but no matter how fast we are we can't at be everywhere at once and they still get to take their actions.

If we need to tank for someone squishier than us we can't leave to kill people with our sword because the ones on the opposite side will shoot our allies while we're not around to deflect bullets.

That's a pretty extreme example, but it's the sort of situation I'd be trying to engineer if I was attempting to get around an infernal built like Molly. That and get her to charge toward my guys straight into some IEDs, or AoE effects like mordite. Though that last can't exactly be solved with guns.

We shouldn't build for being a ranged specialist, but some minimal options so we have tools to use when someone tries to screw with us are too important to ignore.

Once we've actually built a reputation people will start reacting to it, so serious opposition will just get better and better at exploiting holes in our combat skill set.
Get a Wizard involved maybe?

Harry can make forceshields and has good ranged options.

Molly can't replace an entire party or Circle by herself and trying to do so would require immense investments in XP to be good at everything.

Here's the Example Arcana from the Draft Chapter, I should have the Gadgets primer at some point.

Walter (•)
Walter is a gelatinous lump of slime that can form itself into a humanoid shape when interacting
with people, but mostly extrudes pseudopods to manipulate its environment. Walter was created
to tend to the prisoners in a Twilight's dungeon (actually an old repurposed wine cellar, and the
Twilight hasn't actually captured any monsters yet, so at the moment Walter mostly fetches wine
upstairs and oozes around in the dark).
Type: Golem
Nature: Idealist
Demeanor: Conformist
Concept: Servile slime
Physical: Strength 4, Dexterity 2, Stamina 4
Social: Charisma 2, Manipulation 1, Appearance 0
Mental: Perception 1, Intelligence 2, Wits 1
Talents: Alertness 2, Awareness 2, Athletics 3, Brawl 3, Empathy 2
Skills: Crafts 1, Etiquette 2, Larceny 2 Stealth 3, Survival 2
Knowledges: Academics 1, Finance 1, Medicine 1, Occult 1
Arcana Features: Elongated Reach, Golem, Malleable, Ooze
Willpower: 4
Health: -0, -1, -2, -2, -5, Inc

Swift Stride+Wind-Borne Stride after having reached dectuple movement speed:

Jogging: 97.576 Meters/Second
Running: 195 Meters/Second
If we can't reach someone and sword them and go back with this speed and maybe with some extra Skinned Alive Charms + Flight, we have bigger problems than these would solve.

Not convinced.

Edit: And someone in the thread expressed the belief that we can repurchase any Demon Aspect, if thats true, then doing so would boost this even more.

not to mention bullets don't affect everything, magic shields, harder skin, non corporeals, or heck if we don't have enough dots in guns we'll just miss due to not being good enough I don't want to spend enough exp for 5 dots on guns.

Kind of, I read that to mean that the master can call the Emanation's name when it is used as summons and they will hear and appear before them without having to pay the price for the teleport. But you could not say give instructions to a distant emanation or hear from them without some other magic.

Yeah, but we don't have a circle and we can't guarantee we'll have particular people or skill sets available at all times. Like our first trip with Michael, where we had two swordsmen and no wizards or guns on our side. Especially since we're probably going to end up sneaking around Micheal and Charity for some of the stuff we do.

We don't have to build a generalist, but we need something for the major threat categories.

Maybe that solution is setting up prime delivery demonic minions to fill other roles on demand, but we can't do that yet and we can get ranged weapons working fairly easily.

If we can't reach someone and sword them and go back with this speed and maybe with some extra Skinned Alive Charms + Flight, we have bigger problems than these would solve.

Dresden pulls this trick on gribblies all the time; you can be faster than him, but if he had to cover less distance or simply trigger an effect he can still outpace you.

In the scenario I described (which admittedly makes the other person dead weight) you'd be racing bullets shot towards your current position from the opposite direction of the one you're running in.

Regular bullets are fast enough that at those distances you could be outright supersonic and they'd still make it before you'd crossed that distanced twice with a break to kill people in the middle.

Okay, how do you defend against a carbomb, then?

We can't protect against everything, and I still do not believe these measures would be EXP efficient, as if the people who would use these techniques wanted us dead or our someone close to us, they wouldnt do it like that.

Meanwhile EXP invested in improving what we already have improves us in a way that is good against more supernatural threats, who can't be warded off other ways, or seeking oblique solutions like servitors, bound demons, mooks etc.

in fairness even a fair few people don't know the exact mechanics of how dresden fights all the time. Also we're exalted we have far far more ways to fight then dresden ever will predicting us is almost impossible.
We're assuming we're fighting competent opposition here. If they were scrubs there would be no point worrying.
But the potential of running into two or three Denarians with supporting cultists and warphounds should alarm you.
Or a clan of trained ghouls with enchanted weapons and the training to use them.

Gonna note that by these rules?
Nothing Im seeing prevents Molly, or any other Infernal, taking all the components into her Inner Kingdom and doing the construction work there, where the Essence is of a much higher level.

People don't know everything about it, but they learned enough over time to screw with him.

Yeah, this is fair.
Options are good. Options prevent you being predictable. Mab once took away Dresden's blasting rod and his knowledge of Fire magic to prevent him being predictable because it would have gotten him killed.

Get a Wizard involved maybe? Harry can make forceshields and has good ranged options.
Molly can't replace an entire party or Circle by herself and trying to do so would require immense investments in XP to be good at everything.
There arent that many competent wizards around, let alone the subset who will drop their everything to risk their lives for us and our personal priorities. For free.

Dresden's crusading tendencies is not the norm for most wizards, and Dresden will not always be available right when we need him, because he has responsibilities now that take him across the country.
IIRC, he's due to go run a Warden training camp in Spring 2007.

Futhermore, they're currently fighting a war against another supernatural Power.
The Wardens allegedly numbered less than five hundred people pre-war casualties. There's less than ten thousand wizards on the Council globally. Someone like Harry is legitimately described for sheer strength as being top 50 in the world.

Chicago, the third largest city in the US, with almost three million people, has ONE resident White Council wizard.
There just arent that many of them. Thats part of the problem.

We'll probably get access to some spellweavers, whether they are focused Talents or sorcerers, when we create our Kingdom, assuming we take the right options.
But thats not the same thing as being able to whistle up wizards at need.

Going to note that as a fan of the Rage Recast(Flight) + Wind-Born Stride + Boiling Oil Mastery strat?
Reaching a person and stabbing them is far from the easy way you're portraying it.

You need to locate the person shooting at you, assess, then charge them, and not trigger any close-in defenses they might have running. And hope that if you were doing an escort mission, noone ganks your HVT while you're away. In a setting where NeverNever portals, contingent spells and teleport potions are a thing.

Not to mention mundane options like proximity-triggered claymores and suicide vests with deadman triggers;yes, we've seen both Black Court Renfields and Denarian cultists willing to die on command.

The canon cage matches of the Paolo Ortega duel in Death Masks and the Shedd Aquarium in Small Favor do make it clear that there is an advantage to having a ranged attack when fighting competent opposition.
Else you risk getting fucked up badly.

A lesson that was reinforced by the Eeb duel in the Erl King's court, and then by the second Ortega duel at Chitchen Itza where both duellists were blatantly superhuman: Red Court Noble vs Winter Knight Wizard.

If someone is corporeal enough to shoot at you, you can shoot them right back.
Thats how it works in the Dresdenverse.
Some targets might need special ammo like iron or silver or rocksalt, but thats why we have Transcendent Anathema for Agg.

And no, there are very few things immune to bullet.
Wizards, Denarians, Outsiders, Fae, we've seen them all die/be disrupted to those vectors in canon.
There's stuff that its reasonable to doubt. This isnt one of them.

Its worth remembering that a lot of these things? Stopgaps.
We're rocking armor until Molly gets tough enough to tank elephant bullets. Nightvision glasses until she has the Perception and Nightvision perk to do it organically. Gun until we can fire 6 to 15 dice of magic laser out several hundred meters.

Loadouts will change as we get more powerful.
That shield for example, will probably disappear from regular use outside of escort missions, as soon as she replaces them with something like armored gloves, or picks up a Shih art.
Okay, how do you defend against a carbomb, then?

Better Perception + Awareness to notice tampering.
Hollow Mind Curse in your vehicle to warn you against tampering. Simply armoring the vehicle so well that it tanks the damage.
Perfect defense charm.

even geniuses have been caught flat footed plenty of times in dresden files. Also I'll note once major individuals are aware of the murder blender we are and that we can provoke unlike fae against mortals their going to interact with us largely through patsies or when they KNOW we won't be the one who starts an attack first.

Edit: Most individuals do not provoke that which is stronger than them or at least not breaking the rules when confronting them. See no one absolutely no one in the know triggers an attack on mab cause they know then she could attack back and the same applies for shit way lower in power as they are bound by rules.

Edit: I'll note when talking about bullets I wasn't talking about a sniper I was just mentioning it as one possibility of things that CAN happen not that it will or is even entirely likely just something to take into account.

lastly everything else you wrote about yeah fairly in agreement with you.

Where are you getting this from I didn't see whatever part makes you think our Hell counts as a Dragon Nest or something.

I'm not in a rush to get a Charm-based ranged attack option, especially not when we're still so green and working on our basic necessities.

Legalities aside, a handgun seems like the best option for now, at least in the short term. Given the easy availability of information online, it should be relatively simple for us to use the Tools charm to manufacture a pistol.

If we wear gloves when handling it, there will be nothing to link it to us but eyewitnesses. Any situation where we actually need to use a gun should make eyewitnesses a distant concern.

While your inner world could have enough essence for crafting if you were in anything like normal conditions for an exaltation, you are not. You are in power-saving mode with means Essence is rationed for things like running your charms and healing at a decent rate. You guys are going to have to find a dragon's best, or figure out how to work submerged in tainted liquid with Charred Sinner's Renewal.

I'm not sure whether it applies here, but the essence of Hells is seriously tainted, and may well have quite nasty side effects.

Oh you can make a gun right now, out a sufficient quantity of rusted bottle-caps if you want. That is what high crafting and tool charms do. Hell you could make a small airplane from or an APC scratch with working machine guns given enough materials

we're pretty bullshit when you remember a lot of mortal rules still apply to us or at least we aren't unable to use being mortal to our advantage unlike many many others. We can totally murderblend random civilians if we wanted too unlike mab or said civies permission.

[X] Lydia's background, see if you can get her to talk about her family more
-[X] Lead into the conversation by asking what attracted her to our dorky baby brother.

We went for a melee build, spreading out to ranged is a bad idea. Exalted prowess is in specialization and we already have 3 melee, craft, and sorcery. If you want a ranged option buy Death of Obsidian Butterflies.

You're not getting ti.

Murder blenders are not new in this setting.
There are naagloshii and loup-garou out there, as well as people like Eldest Gruff. Your ability to kill shit does not translate to your ability to achieve your objectives.

We'll grow, but our threat level at the moment is not even Sidhe Knight. Its our future thats a threat.

As for proxies? Mavra can afford to mass produce a bunch of Black Court fledgelings and Renfields, and expend them; she did this to Dresden just to get blackmail material. The Red Court has suborned trained soldiers. The fomor have servitors who are basically cyborgs with bioware. The Denarians have multigenerational cultists. The White Court have brainbroken ex-special forces mercs.

And thats not counting the Sidhe armies.

Every major faction has competent minions, and we see them more and more as the series goes on
If you keep calibrating threat levels for the Kravos and Sells and hexenwulfen we saw in the first couple books, you will be very unpleasantly surprised when someone out organizes and out thinks you.

I quote:
Grand Grimoire(Cost: 1 point) The Hell contains a great repository of mystical lore, as well as extensive ritual spaces. The difficulty of all ancient sorcery within these spaces is reduced by 2, and the Essence cost by 1. Other ritual magic(or magick) in line with the style and theme of the Hell also enjoys a -1 difficulty reduction.
QM ruling supercedes though.

as awesome as dresden is its made clear again and again and again hes not a heavy hitter as far as non humans are concerned humans are important for their ability to make choices and essentially go and do anything. We have that and power no red court ever throws shit directly at mab cause its retarded I know we aren't mabs equal we are a unit who given a little bit of time could reasonably beat an army single handedly dresden can't do that.
many of said murder blenders of canon literally can't murder blend unprovoked some can most can't. Again the thing your suggesting are also patsies ergo not them directly nicodemus once we get somewhat stronger will not appear anywhere near us if he can same for many others.
