We do the mission first or having augment first?
Saying that, the smug look in her eyes quickly goes away, replaced with something more serious – and the heavy air returns as she leans forward, elbows on her thighs. You copy the motion reflexively. Golden amber eyes sharp as the tip of a blade. "… We spotted Moon on the move," you tense up, but wait. There's more. Mao nods. "And he's distorted."
You inhale sharply – sweat breaks out of your skin in hives. Sun is in – "Motherfucker," you mumble. "Knew we shoulda killed him in the first place."
Mao shakes her head. "Ain't nobody's fault. Nobody could predict that," you raise an eyebrow, and Mao rolls her amber eyes. "Lily, nobody knows how people Distort, and if every people who's a little down on the luck could Distort, we'd all already be Distorted or dead."
You open your mouth, and then closes it. "Whatever."
You grimace. This… would be the first time in a while that you won't be working with Kai. Suddenly, you're very aware of the Red Ribbon's existence on your head, the fabrics brushing faintly against your hair. "… And 'them'?"
"Vic's Office," your eyebrows pick up at that. "Yeah, I know, but Moon's – Hana's dubbed him 'Weeping Heartstrings' now, and yes, I know, but the girls saw him do something funny to the Vic's Office Fixers, and now they're under his control. Last the girls saw them, they're headed towards Sun's place –" your hands clench tight into fists. "This time, we're being hired by Vale."
You blink, exhaling slowly. "That's Sun's Boss."
"Yep," Mao confirms, smirking crookedly. "Also the one who suggested Sun to hire us in the first place."
Huh. Yeah. Okay. That fits. Then you pause, connecting the dots. "Sun doesn't know, does she?"
"Nope."
You open your mouth –
[Empathy Check. Easy. Autopass.]
She smiles a melancholic smile. "It was nice, while it lasted. So just for that, at least, I don't want him to die."
And you close your mouth down, grimacing. "… It's probably better that way."
[Negotiaton Check. Easy. Autopass.]
If it comes to it, beg for forgiveness, not permission.
"Thought the same. Our client too. She doesn't want Sun to know," Mao tells you.
… Honestly, you should be more worried about yourself.
Squawk!
You jump on your seat, heart flying up to your throat as you tear your hands away from your Red Ribbon, eyes locking with the crow. "… What?" you say, cautiously.
"Hungry?"
You jump again. Gods, this ain't doing wonders for your nerves. Your eyes lower down to the Boss'… burlap sack of a head. "… Yeah."
The head twitches. "Food. In fridge. Eat."
You blink, staring at him, unsure, but before you could even act on his words, the crow suddenly jumps off from its perch. You watch it glide around for a moment, circling the room, before slipping into the breakroom. You stare, unsure, towards the breakroom, unmoving from your seat, as you hear something being opened – a fridge, followed by some rustlings, and something being closed back again. A black blur glides out of the breakroom, but this time, it's accompanied something white; a rustling plastic bag hanging from its beak, with something inside – and you don't have to wonder what that something is as the crow descends onto the table, and plops down the plastic bag down before you. Its claws clatter on the table, shifting, turning to you, before it spreads a wing out towards the back. It stares at you. You stare back at it.
"What in the…"
"Food," you twitch towards the Boss. "Eat. Full."
Keeping one eye on your Boss, and another on the weird – weirder than it already was – crow, you tentatively open the box inside. You blink as a full round of icing-slathered cake with strawberries stare back at you. This is… you look up to the crow, then to the Boss. "… You sure?"
"Yes."
"… I ain't gonna take backsies, yeah?"
Well, that's a lie – if the Boss tells you to stop, then you're definitely going to stop, but it's gonna fuck you up, and you're also making super duper sure and clear.
"Eat."
You open your mouth, and then closes it. "Well, alright then," you mumble under your breath. There's a fork inside already, fortunately. "Digging in."
You take a chunk out of the round whole cake with the fork, and plop it inside your mouth. Your eyes widen as an explosion of flavor bursts forth. Sweet. Extremely, extremely sweet. But creamy, and buttery, and so full of fat, followed by pops of sweet and sour and cold juiciness as taste the strawberry jam, and the actual strawberry fruit slices tucked between the yellow cake slices. You nearly moan – it feels like you're committing something extremely, truly bad, and it's with great regret that you swallow it down. But then, you still have a whole ass cake still in front of you.
"Good. Be full," the Boss says, voice halting, almost creaking – you're reminded of the whistles of wind through the holes and cracks of your windows. "Be safe. Return."
You pause, turning to the Boss, frowning. "Y'know, if you're that damn worried, then you coulda join us."
The moment that leaves your lips, you immediately come to regret it. Fuck. He's the boss, and you're demanding shit out of him? You're fucked –
"No. Watch home. Scarecrow."
You stare at him. He doesn't elaborate. You open your mouth, and then closes it shut, a little loss for words as you continue to pick at the cake, plopping it into your mouth, and savoring every last drop that you can get. You won't die. You're not going to die. You'll get back. Yet all the same, this could also be your last meal. Quietly, you think on your Boss. Something tells you, that if Mao hasn't mentioned anything, then it's pointless to continue this line of questioning. Eventually, you finish the whole cake, and lean into your chair, full and happy.
"… Thanks, Boss."
"Good."
Then Mao comes back with a suitcase. She pauses, staring at the cake – or what's left of it: nothing and the box. "… Those were mine."
"I pay."
Mao jumps, blinking, staring at the Boss for a long time. "Huh," she mutters, surprised. Then chuckles, sauntering onto her armchair, and plopping down. "Alright then."
"… What's that?" you ask, eyeing the white metal suitcase.
Mao smiles crookedly. "Insurance, if things go badly. My insurance, specifically, so don't pull some reckless shit, okay? At least survive for a whole month before you go and keel over. If shit goes wrong, then…" she pulls out a white envelope from her pocket and slides it to you over the table. "Open this. You'll know what to do next. But do not open this, if things go smoothly," her eyes narrow, golden ambers flashing, almost glowing; you catch something flickering, sparking. You tense up. "Or I'll be fucking pissed."
[Instinct Check: Easy. Pass.]
A single pull of the trigger –
[Instinct Check: Hard. Pass.]
And it could be in seconds, or minutes, or hours, or days, or weeks, or months or years –
[Instinct Check: Very Hard. Pass.]
And then – death. Mao always hits her mark.
"I won't," you grind out, shivering. "And I don't go back on my word."
The intensity – the pressure fades away as Mao returns to her smiling self. "I know. I trust you."
"And I ain't gonna die," you add, mutteringly, and ignoring what she just said. "… What the fuck's up with people saying that to me today?" Mao smirks. You inhale, and then exhale, before nodding, locking eyes with her as you pick the envelope up. "Fine, alright, whatever. Let's do this."
Getting started towards soul damage sounds very cool, but is there a chance we could raise Melee to 3 for parity with endurance?
Even above the symmetry, it does say that Repression still needs an attack to hit, which runs off melee for us, and I feel that since we went up a grade and may get appopriate jobs thats something we should make sure is up to par.
May hit up your plan if we went a different approach on the shopping list. just something more "full offence" . I dont think the scuff justification addendum for not getting augs is necessary.--[X] You're confident in your ability to stand up, what you need is something to help you put others down. Given your budget and what you've seen of Kai's eye though, maybe best not to get something that you can't take out if it's a bit too scuffed. Some kind of underlay to your clothes or something. A temporary booster is also fine, as long as it can help you ramp up.
I see. The mechanics section still says this, just as a note, then.Repression used to work like this until Soothing made them separate since each tree should stand on its own when it comes to combat. It would still be a good idea to raise Melee but not for Repression, which we need to raise for its own sake.
In Order to Deal Sanity Damage, Physical Strike has to Hit. Repression does not modify Physical Strikes.

This...sounds like that symbiotic weapon style stuff? Or were you thinking something else? Sounds good to me, though, if maybe expensive. If its too expensive, we may want to see if the knockbar is good enough for now or if we'll shortly going to be needing an intermediary step weapon.Might want to think about getting a sword at some point too as money allows. Hell, some kind of vampiric sword to let us feed any excess health into to build up a super attack could be a nice trump card too.
Why are so many people dead set on shopping? The qm said that what we have is just barely enough to get something that won't actively screw us over, and that would take all our money. There is no guarantee of how much our share of the reward is and I'd rather not have to do jobs for Lin to make rent.
Because Augmentations are crucial, and we're going on an incredibly dangerous mission. And is what happens when we put off upgrading ourselves. Why are so many people dead set on shopping? Well, there is this. There is no guarantee of how much our share of the reward is and I'd rather not have to do jobs for Lin to make rent.
And my plan, and other plans, do include taking a job afterwards, so...Yep. And at the very least, you will get 1 mil. More, if you contribute more -- Mao's not that cruel.

And what is the source on that assertion exactly? People get augments and they help. And when you're tough like Lily. a little help can boost her sufficiently for her perks and innate murder talents to at least edge out a situation that would be otherwise far worse.Thank you for pointing that out, I had not seen that.
My main objection is I don't believe that 1mil is going to get anything useful enough to tip the odds and will be wasted.

Its a big job. Its important to pull out all the stops.
Been thinking it over, and it kinda contradicts what I said about it before, so I guess it's a bit of retconning, and I haven't really super decided on it yet -- but in terms of shopping, one mil's a good cut-off point from "hackjob work" to "augmenter's not gonna try to fuck you over", though said quality's up in the air. Two mils are where you get the decent ok stuffs like your Knockbar
The possibility of gaining something useful, is itself good enough, when dealing with something this dangerous imo.The only guarantee 1mil gets us is "not going to try to fuck you over" nothing on how useful it actually is.

I trust in Cofee sure. but the narrative for the write-in doesnt feel quite right. It restricts options unnecessarily.TBH, I think Coffee sees the thrust and is going to give us options anyway. Likely a relatively weak but passive bonus that might have some scuffed trait that's annoying to work around, or a powerful bonus with a genuine pain in the ass downside, or a decently-potent but expendable bonus that'll break down after a single fight but likely provides good benefits until then with reasonable drawbacks.
I'd go with the latter in that case, anything we want to make a core part of our build should be worth at least two mil, five ideally. Knockbar also could use some love, it's good but it could be better.
Might want to think about getting a sword at some point too as money allows. Hell, some kind of vampiric sword to let us feed any excess health into to build up a super attack could be a nice trump card too.
That'd be up to the choices presented. Or would it make sense to buy something that does absolutely nothing at all? Its not like its the equivalent of buying a 1 million paper knife just because. Augments work and that is why people use them. if they didnt then people wouldnt buy.The source of that assertion is here.
The only guarantee 1mil gets us is "not going to try to fuck you over" nothing on how useful it actually is.
Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer. And imo we are though enough to handle this as is and can get something better later when we have more money.
Kai's mom.Alright, it's been a while. Please refresh my memory. Wonderland?
Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
Except in The City, it is much faster and has shotguns and can fly.
Seldom "tough enough" is enough. there's no such thing. specially when we're at the lower levels of the totem pole.
Alright, it's been a while. Please refresh my memory. Wonderland?
