Panic also kills plenty quick and panic spending can harm us in the long term. There is zero guarantee that the money we spend now would upgrade us enough to be useful.

There's no harm in just going shopping and looking around before doing the request. If we find something useful then we can spend the money, if we don't find anything then we can keep our money for the next time.

This. I am not confident we will find anything actually of worth that we can afford but there is nothing stopping us not getting anything. I will the expendable option might be the most promising option. Something more permanent might not be that strong or have more drawbacks than we like but a limited use item might have enough oomf to help us with the big mission, which is the entire reason why we would go shopping in the first place. While 1 mil might be right on the border of the price range but it does mean we are not getting junk.

I will concede that we should go looking for something, this is going to be rough even if we are not going to handle the main course ourselves. Damage or accuracy is what I would be looking for since we have plenty of tankiness but not a lot of damage to active Life Sap quickly. Hell, Life Sap might perform better on a damage spec build.

Edit:
[X] Plan: All You Need is Not Die

Going with this for now since I think we will the Job pay with pay for rent and taxes. I expect the thread will need to consolidate the plans later so my vote is most likely going to change later but this works the best of me right now.

[X] Plan: Batten down the Hatches.

As much as I'd like to squeeze in a chat with Adil, it would have to come at the expense of (for me) the Canard job (and possibly risk money issues which I want no part of) or the shopping trip which given the main job we've got probably isn't so great an idea.

Since not all people reading this quest have played Library of Ruina here a number of facts about augments in the City. Note that some details might have been altered by SoothingCoffee for the sake of this quest such as Kali not having any augments.
  • Augments are the most important part of a fixer's equipment (Source: Book of Eri)
  • Augments are completely safe as long as you don't grab the literally bottom of the barrel stuff (Source: Book of Eri, Book of Dino)
  • Common types of augments are strength mods ("Swinging around an utility pole") or speed mods ("Crossing a block in the blink of an eye") (Source: Book of Eri)
  • Common methods of augmenting are bionic organs, cybernetics, exoskeletons or tattoos (the last being a Singularity with an elapsed copyright) (Source: Book of Eri, Book of Dino)
  • Even Grade 9 fixers can afford augments (Source: Book of Yun, Book of Eri)
  • Urban Legend class tattoo augments "don't cost an awful lot". (Source: Book of Dino)
  • Full body robotic prosthetics are discouraged unless you go for the super super expensive stuff. Sensory organs or mental chips that suppress/regulate desires are very expensive (Source: Book of Mo)
  • Replacing your body from the head down after being decapitated with a clone of your sister's body is possible. (Source: Reception of Wedge Office.) Edit: This was part of their Health Insurance Policy.

For example!

This is what augs can do. and its not even that big a feat.

Would you want to go to Karrion Bouquet to check for brain protection hats anyway @Bladesguy?
While I wouldn't mind buying something like that, I don't think we have the money to get it.
May hit up your plan if we went a different approach on the shopping list. just something more "full offence" . I dont think the scuff justification addendum for not getting augs is necessary.

I don't mind looking for some augs, I'm a big fan of the tattoos idea myself, just not sure if we can afford much with 1 mil. I'll change the wording a bit to make it so we are browsing for offensive gear in general. I suspect Alectai is right in that we will be given more options when we start shopping, but there is no reason not to edit it just in case. How's this look?

-[] Shopping Time – last time you went into the Market District, it was with the gang, and there's a sorta time-restraint then. Now, you have the time to look around a bit. You have money. You don't really know if it's enough for much of anything, but well… why not, right? You can also bring someone else with you, if you want.

--[] You're confident in your ability to stand up, what you need is something to help you put others down.

Umm, @SoothingCoffee, if we survive and complete the Urban Plague mission, do we get that much closer to being 7th Grade, or is there a reduction since Mao is there with us? Not sure how it works when working with higher Grade Fixers.

"Ap," you could almost feel Mao raising her finger when she said that, waggling it around. "I'm not done. Ah, what was it, again? Right. Victor, Mellie, Asoka, Miriam, and Vallete. Ninth Grade Fixers, except for the boss himself; an Eighth Grade Fixer. Coming from the Western side of our District, I'm not surprised you don't know us –"this time, you could hear the grin; like a cat playing with a cornered rat. Mao chuckles. "But we do. Jack of All Trades, in the business for ten years. Quite the experience there – why I'm only in this business for at least four years. I should call you my senior," she laughs. "By the way, I am actually a Fifth Grade Fixer."

You have become Experienced! When fighting against those less Experienced or lower Grade than you, you will receive a Buff/Advantage against them, but when you fight those who more experienced than you, they will receive less Buff/Advantage against you.

Wait a minute, we have more of an advantage than I thought. Maybe.

I am not quite sure how big of a power boost we will get but we are higher on the totem pole. We are on an uneven playing field but for once we are reaping some benefits from it.

[Baya, The Beast of Land, Middle Manager. 35/35 Health. 0/??? Sanity. +2 Damage, +3 Armor, +??? Mental Resist. Special Perk: The Beast of Land: May Sacrifice Damage for Armor. ???. ???. In Control: ???. ???. The Middle Manager: +8 to All Rolls.]

It also starts to explain why the hell this guy has +8 rolls, they are just better than us.

Repression soul damage would be extremely cool then. I still would like Melee just to let it be on the level of other talented stuff, one of our main combat options and being equal to the umbrella skill of Fortitude, but thank you for the clarification.

Ros got the right of it, since I realized that rolling Repression that way was a massive pain in the ass. Of course, Repression, unlike Physical Attacks, don't get Blocked -- as in, with Melee, if you roll 7, and the enemy rolls Block for 4, only 3 of that damage comes through. But with Repression, as long as you win the clash, that 7 Sanity Damage goes in full, reduced only by the enemy's innate mental resistance.

It counts full. Of course, in actual practice, it's a bit more thorough -- that's why you write and document all those reports. Hana checks them, and corroborates it with your fellow Fixers' accounts on what you contributed etc etc to make sure that you're not cheating their system.

Yep yep, thanks for the reminder on how it deals with blocking by the way, I forgot how exactly it worked.

It is not a bad idea to consider Repression as a type of piercing damage. It does not ask by how much you blocked an attack, only if you did or not. Oh, one more thing for those new or who do not remember everything. Repression does not use Weapons Perks unless they say otherwise. This means our knockbar's debuff will not be applied when we are trying to demolish someone's psyche.

I am unsure if the basic damage buff is counted as a perk or not, that is just me being specific though.

Oh. Oh, hell yes.

If we complete the Urban Plague mission we only have two Urban Myths or four Canards left until Grade 7!

Which means more taxes. Damnit.

Huh. So we could theoretically become a 7th Grade Fixer by the end of next week. Assuming we survive. And from what we hear about Kai, she'll be going through something similar. Might be interesting to talk to her at the party about how the fast promotion is settling with her.

Don't worry, the tax only goes up at the end of the month.
Reaching Grade 7 in 5 weeks may not be an new record but I suspect it's the sort of thing that gets people to take note of you, one way or another. We should go for it, of course, but I wonder how long it'll be before Hello Corp decides to make a movie about us. Not sure if Lily would ever notice that though.
Then again, Mao would definitely notice, and likely drag Lily and Kai to watch it.

Alright so after sleeping on it. shoring up all our bases sounds like a good idea to finish this month with a bang. Get something good to do very well on the Urban Plague then just laugh in the Canard.
inb4 the Canard also distorts

[X] Plan: The Best Defense

-[X] Luxurious, and Nutritious (100,000 Ahn): You can… you can treat yourself a little, right? For once in your lifetime, and – fuck. You don't know. Eat whenever you're hungry. HamHamPangPang sandwiches, and that rice porridge Mao and Mori treated you to. Shit, maybe even pork belly? God. Please. [Receive Status: Energetic – +5 Max Health or Sanity Points. Receive temporary +1 to one of your Favored Skills (1d3 Dice Roll).
--[X] Boost Sanity

-[X] Shopping Time – last time you went into the Market District, it was with the gang, and there's a sorta time-restraint then. Now, you have the time to look around a bit. You have money. You don't really know if it's enough for much of anything, but well… why not, right? You can also bring someone else with you, if you want.
--[X] Mao
--[X] Look for something to shore up your offense, you need an edge. Speed or strenght or whatever. You're tough its true but the best defense will always be killing the other dude before he kills you.

-[X] Extermination: Weeping Heartstrings (Urban Plague). Moon, Sun's Ex-Lover, and the guy who first kicked off your career into the Fixer business, has been spotted heading towards Sun's apartment. Normally, that wouldn't require much of any concern, but Moon has Distorted, now dubbed as the Weeping Heartstrings, and has control over the whole of Vic's Office. This will be your first time dealing with Distortions, and you're going in blind without much knowledge beyond speculations over what the Weeping Heartstrings could do, and Mao herself doesn't think this is going to be a simple Request: Distortions are very 'funny' like that. Fortunately, Chief Vale managed to 'evacuate' Sun away from her apartment, but if you fail, that's only going to be a stopgap measure. Pay: 15,000,000 Ahn – After Cut, Before Split. This Request Takes Priority over Other Requests.
--[X] Mandatory: you'll go with Mao.

-[X] Neighbor(s) from Hell (Canard): Mister Toko has cottoned onto the fact that one of his neighbors – or neighbors – might be trying to kill him. Cause? Noise complaints. All of which goes ignored by the Landlord since Toko paid extra for his rent and does so always on time. Something that his neighbors do not always do. It appears that Toko is something of a musician – and people are… sensitive of musicians after the Pianist Incident. One day, Toko caught one of his neighbors stalking him to his work. It might be his paranoia, but regardless, he's willing to hire a Fixer in case he's right. Pay: 350,000 Ahn – After Cut.
-[X] One Month Celebration Party.

Uh...

That plan is literally identical to mine though? Except the fluff for the shopping, but even then, it's the same focus.

[X] Plan: The Best Defense

Edit:

Except the fluff for the shopping, but even then, it's the same focus.
Well, yes. It's mainly about the difference in the shopping option. This one doesn't expect a specific type of aug, and only specifies what function we want, so the net of things to look for may be wider.
