I think we can make 1.3 Mil with the Urban Plague mission, but I'm not a fan of the Socials picked in 'Don't Die then Socials' plan. If we are going to hang out with someone, Kai is a better pick then Mao. We will be spending the whole week with Mao regardless, better to spend the time progressing a different plot thread. Also, I want to do Burning Curiosity before talking to Adil. It should be a better bookend for the arc, and I have been wanting to talk to Landlord Lin for ages.

[X] Plan: All You Need is Not Die
-[X] Luxurious, and Nutritious (100,000 Ahn): You can… you can treat yourself a little, right? For once in your lifetime, and – fuck. You don't know. Eat whenever you're hungry. HamHamPangPang sandwiches, and that rice porridge Mao and Mori treated you to. Shit, maybe even pork belly? God. Please. [Receive Status: Energetic – +5 Max Health or Sanity Points. Receive temporary +1 to one of your Favored Skills (1d3 Dice Roll).
--[X] Boost Sanity
-[X] Shopping Time – last time you went into the Market District, it was with the gang, and there's a sorta time-restraint then. Now, you have the time to look around a bit. You have money. You don't really know if it's enough for much of anything, but well… why not, right? You can also bring someone else with you, if you want.
--[X] Mao
--[X] You're confident in your ability to stand up, what you need is something to help you put others down.
-[X] Extermination: Weeping Heartstrings (Urban Plague). Moon, Sun's Ex-Lover, and the guy who first kicked off your career into the Fixer business, has been spotted heading towards Sun's apartment. Normally, that wouldn't require much of any concern, but Moon has Distorted, now dubbed as the Weeping Heartstrings, and has control over the whole of Vic's Office. This will be your first time dealing with Distortions, and you're going in blind without much knowledge beyond speculations over what the Weeping Heartstrings could do, and Mao herself doesn't think this is going to be a simple Request: Distortions are very 'funny' like that. Fortunately, Chief Vale managed to 'evacuate' Sun away from her apartment, but if you fail, that's only going to be a stopgap measure. Pay: 15,000,000 Ahn – After Cut, Before Split. This Request Takes Priority over Other Requests.
--[X] Mandatory: you'll go with Mao.
-[X] Someone to Hang Out With?
--[X] Kai
. Provided that you managed to survive your mission alive — no, she'll definitely live. And then, it wouldn't be… bad to hang out together, maybe sparring?
-[X] Burning Curiosity – For the first time in years, you've heard something about your parents – and that comes from Landlord Lin. You've already forgotten their face, their voice, and even their names. It doesn't bother you, no, but staring at the crumpled-up doodling of them… loathe as you are to approach him, you gotta know.
-[X] One Month Celebration Party.

How's this plan look?

1) We owe rent and taxes by the end of the month. The Main Story Mission gets us at least 1 million, and then we follow up with a relatively easy Canard to make sure that whatever we spend, we've got enough to cover our fees.
I dont think we should split hairs on this with money. we should have at least enough for our debts from the big job. Doesnt feel worth it for the ap either where social might be better here. We've been working off our perks and the socia storylines to follow up may just open better paths than the Canard.

Having said that we definetely need to splurge on augmentations as this is so far above Lily's paycheck its not even funny. and the better we do the better we'll be rewarded.

And honestly speaking I dont get the fearmongering about the augmentations, one if Mao comes with us she'll keep the workshops honest and two everyone gets augs, they're absolutely necessary. Even grade 9 and 8 fixers get muscle boosters and improved bones and reflexes and organs and other such goodies. The Colors both have some special powers, gears and abilities to reach there and being filled up to the gills in augmentations. We shouldnt compromise on our wellbeing and success out of some misplaced sense of pride or fear.

Plus we have confirmation the augmentations stay with us even if the worst happens and we have to trigger Beats Twice.

Kai's eye gave a bad impression but honestly isnt it more that she' just unused to it and unable to keep up as it stands rather than "Oh augs are bad and workshops will fuck you over"?

Ie: We cant cyberpunk without the cyber, and PMoon is so above shadowrun and cyberpunk augs its not even funny. We need to invest to make our money work for us.

Look, at the end of the day, one million isn't going to buy us something build defining, and I'd rather get a powerful expendable than a modest buff with a nasty downside.

And beyond that, I'm also not willing to assume we'll get more than the minimum, because we are going so far above our weight class that it's not even remotely funny.

One of the biggest reasons I'm willing to risk skipping the second job is that we should be making enough to pay for taxes regardless. If we don't have enough to pay the rent, then that is a favor to landlord Lin. It's not the end of the world. Even if things end up going badly with Lin, we can still dodge homelessness by rooming with Sun.

Lily is aalll about being self-sufficient and self-reliant, and while not being able to pay Lin's rent won't be the end of everything, it's definitely not going to do wonders to her Sanity if her first Month/Attempt at going Independent failed

Yeah, it's why I want to make absolutely sure that we'll have enough to pay the bills, by assuming the worst possible result from the Urban Plague we're ending up on.

If we do better than expected? We can dump that into gitting gud, but paying the bills is priority one, above all others.

Honestly, given our new buff from hitting Grade 8, a Canard should be relatively easy even if we enter it in bad shape. And we Do have those Iron Pills to push us up a wound bracket too.

Actually, is that how we can use them @SoothingCoffee ? Use them between missions to push us up a wound bracket so we get more recovery?

why no, I did not forget about your social with the boss -- what gave you that idea?

I'll be straight, the moment I saw it was Week 4 I was just "NOOOOOO BOSS DANIEL SOCIAL WHY" only to see it included in the briefing scene in a real smooth manner, so seeing this was funny, nice save.

Granted, you only spent a good some minutes with her, but you also pass by her through the hallways, every now and then, exchanging greetings. It's… actually nice. And she seems to know something about your mom, and… well, you want to know.
-[X] One Month Celebration Party. There is, as it happens, a sort of tradition going on with Scarecrow Office and its Sister Offices, where at the end of every month, representatives (generally the Vice Chiefs) of each Office would come together and discuss over this and that. It's a private, and boring thing, Mao told you. This time, however, is going to be different. It's going to be a celebration party – for whom? For everyone, really, but mostly for the recruits who managed to survive within the business for a single month. That means you. (Mao grins, golden ambers curving almost into slits. "We get to basically boast over our juniors – that's you and Kai, by the way – and decide who got the best. And this time, I'm going to be the winner.") [Can only be picked as the Last Action of the Week.]

If I wanted to sum it up, these choices are ultimately centered around how this is the end of the first chapter.

We're dealing with the fall out of Lily's first job with her senior again, going for our first big mark without our partner, taking steps to proactively confront the past that's been hanging over Lily (before we have to decide on whether we'll stay in the apartment or not) for once, getting good eats to celebrate making it as a Fixer with our Office at first month's end, a prologue's conclusion.

It's a compromise of several factors, like the fact some of us aren't certain if we want to bust out the dosh for the meatier Augs, we'll likely get a meaningful character moment with Kai (might end up getting a hint on how her mom took her, shopping habits, if the topic comes up) even if we don't end up buying anything, Karrion is a known factor we have an established relationship, so she'll be likely to play it straight with us, maybe even swing discounts for favors or a tab.

Also:

It goes on like that, dress after dress, jacket after jacket, costume after costume, suit after suit.

"Red really does suit you," Karrion muses aloud, her voice chirping as she looks at you. For once, you're wearing something decent-ish – a red coat lined in gold, almost swallowing you whole, and a white tee underneath; the symbol of the Scarecrow Office stamped in red, as well as a pair of tight fitting, but otherwise snug-ish blue jeans. You rest your hands inside the jacket's pocket. "My eyes are never wrong on this," she nods thoughtfully. "Though I wonder why you chose purple of all colors instead. It's certainly not a bad color – quite the opposite, it is my favorite color, perceptible or otherwise. Although…" Karrion trails off, humming. She perks up. "You are growing into that colors, aren't you, love? You as well, Kai – white is a good color on you, but blue?" she shakes her head. "But it does look like you're growing into it."

Kai blinks. "… Thank you?"

Karrion beams. "You're quite welcome, dearies, and darlings."

"But these colors you speak of," Kai continues, quiet, and you turn to her in interest. "They are not just colors, are they?"

"Oh," Karrion giggles, waving her sickle-like arm. "Nothing like that, dear. They're just colors – the purest, and deepest, most unfiltered of colors."

[Insight Check: Very Hard. Fail.]

You're missing something.

"I see," Kai muses, staring at Karrion. "Can you tell me more, about these colors?"

"Oh? Oh!" suddenly, Karrion perks up, beaming. She claps her arms. "Why… why, of course I can – but only next time, yes, in private? I need to prepare…" she trails off into mutters, before cutting herself off with a soft cough. "… I have never had an apprentice before… ah, but that is what you're asking, yes? To be my apprentice?"

You blink. "Kai?"

"Yes."

Karrion squeaks, clapping her hands faster. She sounds like a deflating balloon.

Kai's serious, you realize. "… Just don't turn me into your dressing doll," you mutter.

Kai doesn't turn to you. "We're partners."

Well that's fucking ominous.

Remember this? I just did. Super duper a bonus for dropping by at the prelude of the week, might do Kai some good to have a reminder this is something she can pursue even apart from her mom dragging her back to her Office.

Edit:

Clothes and/or Accessories at Karrion Bouquet, see if she has anything for the kind of weird voodoo bullshit Moon is using, and pick Kai's brain for what will give either of you an edge against Distortion bullshit, this will be the first week you aren't watching each other's back for a big job, so this way–Actually, fuck that pansy ass shit, you aren't worried, you just rather not have to figure out this partners nonsense a second time, she'll get that.

Whelp, I made a misread, so even if I really like this it won't be happening, so I'm just throwing in for a Kai interaction anyway. The day thematic concerns let up enough to hang out with Mori and Burke...

You could use them during mission or between. Of course, beyond simple healing, the ideal scenario would be to top yourself a bracket like you said to escape injury debuff yeah.

So yes, this time we are not going Dynasty Warriors on Rats, we're up against a full office. Let's look at Lily's statline - 2 Melee/Repression, +1 Damage Knockbar 4 Endurance, 4 Armor, and 35 HP divided into 7/7/7/7/7 blocks, +5 HP on kill, +2 HP pill, and 7/7/7 revive I'd strongly prefer to not need to hit. now the question in my mind is, did Weeping Heartstrings gracefully also gather some chaff for Lily to 'snack' on? If yes, job's easier. If no, we're going to be taking on 6 fixers, one of whom is equal grade to us. Unironically, imo we need to grab as many boosts as we can. Because picture/game out this: Lily now vs 5 Lilies with her starting statline/the baseline and 1... buffer Lily? Its not pretty.

6/6/6/6/6 blocks, actually. It's only 7/7/7/7/7 if you apply the Luxury Food Buff on your health.

That being said.

Don't underestimate Lily, she's actually punching significantly above the level of an 'Ordinary' Grade 8 by my reckoning, and this Office wasn't particularly special either, so it's unlikely their Grade Nines have any particularly good toys going for them.

between the Experience modifier and Lily just being robust as all hell, I'm not especially worried about the Grade 9s, only Vic would be a major threat, I think, and good positioning would limit the impact of their numbers as well, and let Lily's lifedrain build up a shitton of momentum.

If things go well, the Urban Plague should be worth a ton of XP as well, even a tithe of the full value would probably be enough to get Justice up to III, which might unlock the Soul Damage option that SoothingCoffee said was possible (A Repression Advancement seems like it'd do that after all)

[X] Plan: All You Need is Not Die

I want to see Kai again, especially if one of us has a not insignificant chance of dying.

That perk should ideally never be used, we should never try to use it, because we have no idea what the costs of doing so is.

But it's there.

It shouldn't replace tactical thought and cleverness though, ever. If we can go through the entire game without using Twice Beating Heart a single time, then I'll still be happy.

I agree with not using it. As to the cost? Lily already died once. She isn't even sure if she hadn't died more than that. The cost can't be all that great. If anything I think it'd be memories that go. Which, not good, but I don't think we'll suffer permanent debuffs? Unless we die repeatedly.

But this is just guesswork.

Getting started towards soul damage sounds very cool, but is there a chance we could raise Melee to 3 for parity with endurance?

Even above the symmetry, it does say that Repression still needs an attack to hit, which runs off melee for us, and I feel that since we went up a grade and may get appopriate jobs thats something we should make sure is up to par.

Memories are pretty important though? Just because you can survive something doesn't mean you got out scot free, after all.

Frankly, I want to keep this up our sleeve though until Kai's Mom shows up to be a shitter. I halfway expect she's going to pull a Byakuya on us as part of an 'Object Lesson', and her not being ready for us to get back up might create an opening to get a less shitty outcome from this.

Since it's the closest compromise to what I'm actually going for anyway.

Would you want to go to Karrion Bouquet to check for brain protection hats anyway @Bladesguy?

As far as I know augs are...pretty damned easy to change anyway, even if its scuffed. Kai doesn't get rid of the eye because she doesn't want to, not because she can't trivially do so.

Edit: missed a word

Kai's eye isn't at all subpar for its job. It's just modestly costly for combat and maybe not even intended for fighting outside Kai's specific tendencies.

"I see," Mother said, after a moment. A pause, then, as she took a spoonful of her now-cooling porridge. Kai copied the motion, chewing into the chicken breast. "Your eye –" Kai stilled. There it was. "What happened to it?"

"I was wounded during my first mission," Kai admitted, eyeing the table. "One of our clients became a Distortion – " his name was Aki; couldn't be any older than ten. A kid even to her. "And caught me off guard."

"Will it heal?"

She couldn't look away from the table. "No."

There was a tap on the table; of something being placed down, and it entered the edge of her vision. And that made her look up. "You lied," Mother simply noted, and Kai felt her heart caught in her throat. There, on the table, a small jar: inside, her eye stared back. "I hunted the man who did the procedure – he will not do such a thing again – and retrieved this back. Why did you do it?" Kai couldn't find an answer. "Your eyes were – are beautiful."

Silence. Dead, and quiet. Her eye couldn't leave the spherical thing floating inside the liquid jar.

It's not like we're supposed to think this was a rational or appropriate decision.
