While it'd be nice to have some good will in the Southern Jing River we don't explicitly need them for trade, at least narratively, when we're already investing in the Old/New Road project. We'll have opportunities. It'd be a boon certainly but there's just a 25% chance we get to Rep 0 there and there's no unique need for Rep with Thundering Hills. Meanwhile being popular in the Foundation has direct benefits right now, gives us a metaphorical foundation to work with with allies and room to grow. If we do this and then nail Hanyi's tour we're set for our immediate allies and can look outwards. The Meng of these regions are also exactly the kind of people our new provincial identity scheme is targeting.

For once, I rather focus on potential allies+ongoing storyline instead of "numbers go up" and "they dont like us we need to make them like us waaah".

I don't quite agree with that statement.

It's absolutely true that getting a 2, 2, 2 rep is huge. Specially as it gives as a firm grip in the entire center-south region of the Emerald Seas. Even if the boost went to the South River Jing we would still get a 2, 1, 2 rep and get rid of a negative region in the south. Neutrality is the best we can aspire to with the Peak aligned for now.

But a +3 reputation means that they won't just approve of our project, but will actually start to actively support it, however shyly at first. That's a huge difference.
Specially so since we have to continue with that Road Renovation Quest we picked up at Hanyi's concert.
Not only that, but (if I remember correctly) the Western Ferns are still at -1 rep with us. With the Meng being out primary ally in this cultural venture, that is concerning.
Even if it isn't said explicitly, the immediate bonus is for Fundations, I'm convinded that the Hanyi bonus in Meng projects will translate in an improved rep there.

I find that more valuable that the random chance of the other choice.

Except the south Meng we'll be working with are also "The Foundations". They're not Western Fen, and we'll not be working with Western Fen. The Meng aren't our primary ally in our cultural venture. In fact, it's only the Reformist Faction that would pay any mind to it. The ones in "The Foundations" that are already predisposed to like us.

The 3 for the Foundations (which are South Meng "Reformists" and Wang territory) is good for the Fief and good for Hanyi, but we'll be lacking any sort of generalized province-spread. Sixiang is very right to point out the Central nature of the Central Valley, and the way they connect to so many other cultural regions. The Foundations don't connect with many other regions, and although +3 is a boon we could also get a +2 that gets us in the door. Getting in the door is very valuable, because it speeds up the process by which the Emerald Seas comes to learn and accept the virtues of the White Sky.

We kinda do.

Major trade is going to be going along the rivers, and that's the main artery going up from Wang lands.

River trade is simply better that than road trade. Admittedly it should be less important if we're not dealing in bulk goods, but still.

We haven't even had any evidence that the old road quest is a good idea at all - arguably quite the opposite.

I feel like we should start spreading the love. We're already going to have oppurtunities with Hanyi in the Foundations and the Fens aren't we? And with Meng Dan (?) on hand, I can only assume that we'll start to see our star rise across Meng lands. The Meng have an in with us, and that goes both ways. If Meng Dan sends glowing reports back home that should/could boost us anyways.

But improving CRX' standing across more of the province is good shit. Still a bit worried about the northern end.
 
Focus. You get better results from focusing than from trying to do everything.

Definitely, that's why it's tempting. But is it '25% chance to get it' tempting? A boost to Hanyi and Meng projects have more immediate returns where we want them. Hopefully we will get options to explore in the future regarding the Southern Jing Region or at the very least the Old/New Road, but I'd like more control so that we don't improve something peripheral like Thunder Hills over the more central to us Foundation where Rep actually matters a lot for us.

The whole project kind of depends on wider acceptance when you're working with building a group identity for cohesion.
Going deep early risks the identity being too localized to propagate

Sixiang's logic is half right. The central valley is more relevant to more... things. But the idea that it might take longer to see results doesn't make much sense.

The main thrust, the rationale, of focusing on southern Meng lands is that it'll help the penetration of Hanyi's concerts. But the cultural project we agreed to with Meng Diu in the south of their territory with Hanyi's concerts is a really long-term one. And honestly, after this update and last one, fiddling around in the Meng's backyard feels too small. The concert project, from the start when we picked it, is chiefly characterized as playing nice with Meng Diu's hobby project.

And that feels too little, too limited for the scope of the ideas percolating in Ling Qi's brain. It's orienting very long-term focus on an obscure corner of the province, under the direction of one noblewoman representing one faction of one Count clan. It's too narrow, too under the thumb of somebody else, and frankly too unambitious a place to be staking our neo-Weilu identity politics claim for the foreseeable future. Southern Meng territory is just... pigeonholing ourselves. We'll already be benefitting from Hanyi's operation in the region, doubling down just robs us of the flexibility to really make our projects successful.

It's better to pick the Central Valley so that we have the nimbleness to respond to issues and advance our projects more intelligently and faster. We'll be much better prepared to respond to opportunities and changing circumstances if we have eyes and ears in the central region of the province.
