Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

But what is she actually learning?
That her closest Weilu ancestor was the seventh son of Tsu's third daughter who was married off into some now dead Clan?
Why is this relevant to who Ling Qi is, unless Ling Qi actually puts stock into it?

This is exactly the kind of result we're going to get and it makes me sad, because since the beginning of the Quest I've been curious about her ancestry and hoped that she somehow had asecret great lineage.

But after reading for so long... I don't dare hope.

[X] It can't hurt to try. The Weilu are ancient after all, surely most everyone had a drop or two of their blood in them. Imagine how useful it would be, to claim some ancient connection.
[X] There was no need for it. The character for Ling meant 'Zero' and that is what she had started as. If there were any lineage she would claim, it was her teachers, claimed through her own effort.

Poke the thing is winning so I feel safe enough to approval vote, not the biggest fan of the first option's wording.

Might help us with diplomacy

Random side thing... I was re-reading my earlier analysis of Bao Qian, and it occurred to me... at the date, there was a real disconnect where he just didn't get where Ling Qi was coming from as a child of the gutter. This disconnect was made very clear to him, and he struggled with it. He managed to pick up some insight during the evening itself, but he's also highly motivated to figure out whatever it is that he needs to figure out to better understand our favorite Baroness of Frozen Shadows. There's a very real possibility that the next time we see him, he will have taken some time to better understand what life is like in the slums... and if he has, I'd imagine that it will have changed him, at least a little. For someone so dedicated to commerce as Bao Qian, that's the sort of thing that can give you an Insight.

Wacky even-more-to-the-side thought: it just occurred to me exactly how close the title "Duchess of Moonless Nights" was to some of Ling Qi's themes. For that matter, the whole idea of the Night, and associated theft-by-violence isn't that far off either... and then there's the idea of a mentor/boss who has quite a lot of machine folded in within (and partially displacing) their humanity. The parallels aren't that close, but they're enough to wrap a crossover around, I'd think.

"I admit, I've been known to drop lakes on people in combat. It's very disruptive."
"Huh. I suppose I occasionally drop a turtle on people for similar reasons."
"A turtle?"
"He's a very big turtle."

...did the items just fall out of the Liminal in random places if they have enough durability/enlightenment?
Maybe, maybe not, I do expect that some of the strongest items dissolved into the chaotic maelstrom of the Dream will find their way into the dreams of a future generation of crafters; as that's an interesting narrative through line for the setting.

Man this vote is pure evil. Yrs has gotten good at waving big shiny shinies in front of our face.

I'm actually hoping the poke ends up with "nope, no bloodlines here" just for the lulz.
And also the statistical improbability.

Edit: I like this option a lot better

[X] It can't hurt to try. The name "Ling" means "zero", but just because you're starting from zero doesn't mean it won't be fun to find out what the negative numbers were! Also, it's literally inconceivable to look at a "poke me and find out a thing" talisman and NOT poke it, damn it.

I guess I am a little leery of votes that seem super obvious. My brain goes "Yes, why wouldn't we want to poke it? .... Okay then, have five theories why not poking it is a reasonable option."
IF YOU POKE IT WITH INTENT, YOUR FINGER WILL DROP OFF YOUR HAND AND THEN EXPLODE!

tbh, I'm not highly interested in this vote on the stated "might be useful" grounds, I just want Ling Qi to poke it, and then depending on the response go "huh" or "neat" and then... just get on with her life.

But neither option frames this in terms of 'idle curiosity', which is unfortunate

To POKE or not to POKE that is the question
