Haha, never thought Qu Quan would get a musical number. What next, Gong Su singing a ballad?

Also maybe it's because I'm super tired today but for the life of me I can't work out what song that is
You can blame the voters. Qu Quan and Ce Xiang were the ones doing the reassure commoners/convince nobles actions, so that's who got to sing.

As for the song, it is "We raise our cups," the curtain call song from Hadestown.

[] Write-in plan 1. Defensive Raids
-[] Make a defensive infantry formation on the main road, cover the refugees. Force the enemy to fight you, and take not one step back.
-[] Split your cavalry and send them on hit and run attacks on the groups of bandits still pillaging. Withdraw to the defensive formation if/when the Bandits regroup.
I think this would nearly completely nullify the use of the plan Zhang Liao proposed. His goal is to disrupt the enemy and then attack them. Essentially creating weak points and then exploiting them. This combination would create weak points and then do nothing to take advantage of it, which would in the end lead to the enemy coming together and then facing our forces. Meaning we would maybe hurt the enemy with some charges and kill some, but the bulk of the enemy forces is not hurt. Therefore, this is actually a really bad idea, because it only exhausts our cavalry and underutilizes them. No advantage to going about it that way.
[] Write-in plan 2. Defensive Fire Attacks
-[] Make a defensive infantry formation on the main road, cover the refugees. Force the enemy to fight you, and take not one step back.
-[] Split your cavalry and send them to set the Villages and Estates ablaze, with the bandits still inside.
--[] Use hit and run attacks on the groups of bandits fleeing the flames. Withdraw to the defensive formation when/if the Bandits regroup.
Fire leads to smoke, which will only harm the coordination of any forces inside any villages. Furthermore, setting fire to villages and estates will not endear us to the owners. Then there is the issue of use of such a measure. It takes time for the flames to get going. While the roof, often made from straw or some combination of wood and straw can be lighted up easily this will not automatically kill people. They will just get out and burning houses or estates are a horrible battlefield. Fire will also alarm other locations to something going on there and if fighting starts they will leave houses by themselves. This just creates more potential chaos, but we take no advantage of it, while the smoke may cut off some of our units or lead to confusion during the fight.
[] Write-in plan 3. Defensive Fire Volleys
-[] Make a defensive infantry formation on the main road, cover the refugees. Force the enemy to fight you, and take not one step back.
-[] Have archers loose volleys of fire arrows, to set the Villages and Estates ablaze, with the bandits still inside.
-[] Split your cavalry and send them on hit and run attacks against groups of bandits fleeing the flames. Withdraw to the defensive formation when/if the Bandits regroup.
Same arguments apply from the second plan. Only difference is you take the moment of surprise away from the cavalry attack. This can go either way. The bandits may flee quicker or reform themselves quicker. Furthermore, getting enough archers quickly to the enemy may lose us the element of surprise simply by the time needed to do it.

@Gaz To reiterate Tatbee's question in a different way can we get a rough estimate of the enemy numbers? Cao Xing just said a big force. The yellow dragon banner implies Huang Long, but not sure if this is an implication of him being there or just the forces being part of his "group".

It's Huang Long's full force. It's currently split into smaller units as the men have gone out to raid the countryside. Altogether, they outnumber you, but their exact numbers are unknown.

We should plan to kill as many as we can, not just defeat them
I don't really need to argue this point since QM confirmed it's the full force here, but all the same.

Realistically, more soldiers* are killed during a rout than the battle preceding it. Aiming for a rout is pretty much always the goal, because then you're free to run them down without contest. Killing 3k bandits with 250 losses is way preferable to killing 3.5k bandits with 1k losses. Always always always target their morale.** And then leave them with a seemingly clear escape route (even if it's false)

* The term soldier being used loosely here, to refer to the broad picture rather than the bandit rabble specific to our situation.
** Unless you have reason to believe they're unbreakable and willing to die to the last man, fanatics or suicide mission type stuff. Even professional armies break pretty easy under the right conditions.

My fear with Zhang Liao's plan is defeat in detail - all it takes is one bandit group to be unexpectant resilient or for our scouts to have missed an enemy reserve for our split cav to be targets of an organized counterattack, in which they are seperated from the infantry. If our Calvary gets mauled here, we can't capitalize on our victory even if we win.

I'd rather go with Zhu Fang's plan and just barrel forwards with all our forces - we wouldn't hit as many of the scattered enemy forces, but the morale shock would be greater and we'll be in a better position for the next phase of the battle - it's not going to be decided here. Instead keep the momentum up, split into two or three columns to smash enemy forces and wait for a response.

Thinking about it picking off enemy units while there scattered is a good idea after all the enemy force is more numerous then us so it's in our best intertest to whittle them down before they reform into one army.

For unit composition I contemplate maybe going with only two cavalry forces and therefore getting one of our top three leaders to serve as the main blow of the main force. It is a ten point difference(Yu Zhong(66) vs Zhu Fang (76), and I am not entirely sure if the split up into three separate units does not take too much away from the punching power of the respective cavalry units.
My initial idea would then be to put Zhu Fang in charge of one of the main forces and have Xu Jian be his sub-commander. Also put Qu Quan under Yu Zhong and leave Gong Su with Fang and Jian. The cavalry units form Fang's former unit would be split between Zhang Liao and Shu, with the former getting a little more than the latter.
Other option is to entrust the main force to Zhang Liao.

Has anyone an opinion on that?

You would give our biggest tactical advantage out of our hands and then still want to end up doing the same thing Zhang Liao proposes right now just slower? That is not sound thinking. First you have to explain to me why cavalry would get easily locked down that they would not be able to disengage or how the bandits can essentially set up an ambush for them. Our most experienced, best equipped and led force will be pinned down and crushed or is in danger of it. If that is your fear, barreling forward would be the most idiotic plan possible. The amount of discipline and tactical foresight you attribute to the enemy is enormous and somehow only relevant for one scenario. Going by this line of thought defensive play or the ambush are the only possible option. Full on charge would be the worst.

If they are able, according to you, to regroup and counterattack when hit by cavalry attacks, why would they not be able to do the same against a far slower and more steady attack? Allowing the enemy to get into formation to withstand cavalry charges or bring their full numbers to bear is one if not the worst plans going forward. According to Cao Xing the enemy is currently vulnerable, because he is not in formation and dispersed. But this will not remain so, which is why speed is of the essence. Infantry is obviously slower than cavalry. There is no indication that an infantry charge will be able to do the same a cavalry charge will be able to do. If that was the case, Zhang Liao would not have proposed a cavalry charge.

This is the full enemy force split into smaller units, if we take our time and give them time to react to us this will turn into a slug fest. We cannot possibly want that. A slug fest will lead to higher casualties on our side and put our more valuable forces into a meat grinder.

I think you are wrong, we could actually decide the battle here depending on the initial results. And even if not, this is no reason to not go for the course of action which would put us into the most advantageous position possible.

For the ones voting for Yu Zhong's plan may I propose such a unit composition it would at least put one into existence:

@Gaz just to check, this is only the enemy Vanguard right?
And the bandit main force is following behind?
It's Huang Long's full force. It's currently split into smaller units as the men have gone out to raid the countryside. Altogether, they outnumber you, but their exact numbers are unknown.
I don't really need to argue this point since QM confirmed it's the full force here, but all the same.
Some confusion here.

I was asking if the Main Heishan Bandit Force is still following behind Huang Long's Force. (they're a few days behind, I guess?)
I think they're also approaching Xinshen from the North.
"Three bands of outlaws are heading towards our position. By all accounts, this is the first wave of invasion, with what can be considered their main host following behind.
Though that answers my own question.

Yeah for clarification, the main body of the Heishan bandits lead by Chu Yan are approaching, but yet to arrive. The bandits are mostly rather loosely aligned with the various chiefs having similar goals, but kinda acting on their own initiatives. The three battles taking place are against the first three bandit chieftains invading Xinshen from the north, with more some distance behind them. Huang Long, the chieftain you are facing, is pillaging the wealthy and fertile farms in the northern plains of the county, with his own force split up into different raiding parties, who have gone out to strip the countryside of wealth, and are in the process of starting to rejoin before they continue their march.
