The Smallest of Dragons, The Loudest of Roars (An ASOIAF Valyrian Adventure Quest)

Do we actually bother to use gold coins as a primary token of currency at this point? It seems like somewhere around where we are we'd start to just handle most of our affairs through letters of credit just because everything else is too ungainly.

We aren't rocking the strip mines from hell yet, but still...

We're rich in land, ariable land where our personal vila is, and lots of buildings are under our ownership in major cities we rent, we are partnered with several lucrative enterprises in a few major cities that we can have a hand in if we wish, and a few captains in the Valyrian merchant class owe the family lots of favors.

hell, dragon eggs are a massive source of income if you want to get rid of the eggs you have for buying uphalf the country if you wish.

we have the ability to become Crassus if we try and really want to be.

Well, Crassus did specialize in real estate improvement. Specifically by showing up at (somewhat suspicious) fires, buying the homes from the owners while they are on fire, and putting them out with his private company of firemen and engineers. Spruce them up a little bit and start collecting rent, sometimes from the old owners.

That seems to be a sentiment both appropriate to the Valyrians and... severely threatening to the rest of the planet.

Well the dudes in charge of Valyria are more interested in buying property with human lives then their money...

because human lives are cheap, while their money is not. And dragons are worth whole god damn nations.

as for enterprises... take your pick whenever you choose what business to take over as your main business when the quest starts.

the opportunities are endless.

I'm tempted to go for engineering, honestly. The art of cut and cast stone, a Freemason of a different coat.

Certainly a growth industry when your civilization is the Tower of Babel writ large, and fitting for a shrewd and cynical introvert.

But there are few poor choices here.

Well, the Problem with the Tower of Babel is that, sooner or later, God Decides to destroy it because of Man's hubris. That being the Doom.

Besides, we can do more fun kinds of economic growth... like fraud, protection rackets, war, dragon racing for the masses (Yes... Really, The Valyrians love Dragon Racing.)

And even just rebuilding the family by just... finding all the hot, sexy, genius women in Valyria and engaging in an orgy every other night until we have a boatload of kids and make them dragon riders...

Be the Walder Frey of Valyria, it would certainly be entertaining.

......Let's do it. With this alone you got me.
I was just offering an idea of what you could become.

I found it intertaining.

There's also the possibility of us just... you know, being Aegon the unworthy... Fucking everyone with a pulse just because we can, and getting the basterds for our line.

Walder did pretty well if we are being honest. Especially with what his dad left him with. Made his house the second strongest in the Riverlands from him just doing politics and a little scheming.

With our character I can totally see a Walder Frey skill set. Good Administration, Intrigue and Diplomacy. Get that Intrigue to Master with our traits we'd be pretty good.

"No... no. You misunderstand. The gods did not send down their wrath because they judge you lacking. They sent it because they love me. Every shattered city, every molten ruin? Its all job security to an engineer."

But, yeah. Just running an exchange would be terrifying. I remember the bullshit the Japanese exchanges got into during their feudal period. There are indeed options.

Chances are that romance will be rather tricky. We are not and will never be a social butterfly, nor are we of a position that would draw envy from the Forty. A daughter from one of the main families would either be one perceived as unsuitable for better prospects for some reason, which may be a negative or a positive from our own skewed perspective, or else there to manipulate us into a pseudo-vassalage arrangement to the house of her birth. The least of the Forty is still a worthy piece on the chessboard. Better propositions might come from the lower Freeholder classes from some metrics though that, or gods forbid marrying a woman who is from outside, would have nasty diplomatic effects when we can nary afford them.

I see nothing remotely immoral about having a mountain of children so long as we ensure they have a place inside our house or out. Since we aren't strictly primogeniture succession, I don't think, we could even weigh their merits as they advance. That may result in some kinslaying but objections to such things is something left to andals and first men, though it would still make us sad.

Except that Walder also controled a very key trade node in the Twins, and could charge whatever the hell he wanted for people when they crossed.

We only have... a few businesses and about a hundred thousand acres of land give or take scattered around the Freehold.

Opening line to our MC's Book: The Secrets to Building, Wealth, and influence.

Yeah, but we don't have a total monopoly of goods, like some of the exchanges did.

They were bullshit.

Perhaps not at the moment, but we are one of the Forty, our name demands respect from them.

Even if they do enjoy the precarious position we have found ourselves in thanks to dads blunder.

While that is one way to look at it, it is alos the perfect way to turn it into our advantage.

A percived infertile woman thrust upon us, only to wind up being pregnant a few months later after getting in bed with us? A Really good way to boost our reputation with the ladies.

Not being a social butterfly: Well fuck that, you have money... and the ability to pay for spies to find you the most perfect Valyrian wife that will both produce you many children, and to help you with running your empire?

Want to play the allience game like the Ck2 master we all are on some days? Just kidnap people and marry them at swordpoint, or kidnap them... or promise them shit and backstab their father or brother because you have blackmail on them for being absolute assholes.

Genetics Game? Well, low borns are surprisingly varried in terms of Genetic traits... esspecially of the none dragonrider veriaty in Valyria... or a best friend who is willing to go through magical hell to turn your children into gods!

The choices are endless, esspcially when you can have a veriable Harem at your beck and call because your religion encourages having multiple wives.

Well, in Valyria, any child can be anything, from the lowest basterd to the Forty Families greatest...

And thankfully, you will have plenty of time to raise the kids...

If you survive the war of course, assuming you wish to partake in it.

I mean we have Legendary Administration. We can get money by basically rubbing our hands together. Increase our Intrigue to master and then we have a lot of possibilities available to us. Especially if we pick the right women to marry. Walder didn't just get what he wanted because of his location. He knew how to get what he wanted through money, schemes and politics. Freys in the past weren't the second strongest house in the Riverlands. That is until Walder started playing the Game.

We're good, but we're not scrooge mcduck level of good... yet.

Well, finding a good woman... or women will help immensely in that small fact of growing our great power an influence.

Well I shall say this.

I am having so much fun writing the update to come.

Because oh boy... It's gonna start (hopefully) strong and it never lets go.

I detest Walder as a waste of human potential but I have a great deal of respect for the Freys as they were and could have been. All it would have taken is for Walder to put aside his pissing contests and settle into some realpolitik.

We don't control a beautiful location like the Twins but there are lots of locations that could become such. Essaria would be a dazzling gemstone if we had it, a figurative port in an infinite sea of grass: The Rhoynar, the Sarnor, the Fisher Queens, the still semi-nomadic Qaathi... with a fairly clear shot to either Mantarys or Slaver's Bay. And the Dothraki are half a continent away at this point.

Honestly, in a setting with polygamous marriage and the ability to take lovers at will... it would scarcely hurt us to take an actually infertile woman. We just need a decent kid to come from somewhere within a couple of decades.

Doable if we are playing off an existing vendetta or if we are taking foreign land and are trying to bind a vassal. In the latter case, that is pretty much what the Andals will do to the first men in future centuries. But we need to limit daggers pointed at our backs.

Genetics Game? Well, low borns are surprisingly varried in terms of Genetic traits... esspecially of the none dragonrider veriaty in Valyria... or a best friend who is willing to go through magical hell to turn your children into gods!
Fleshcrafting is great but I wouldn't count on it breeding true. Blood magic is dangerous, though I'd give it a shot with the daughter of such tinkering.

Now that's a pipdream and a half. Walder was vengeful as fuck and that makes him wonderfully incompetent of his true situation.

Well, there is a chance to win lands and glory in war... in Slavers bay.

No... Well, we'll have plenty of time to raise a family in between our business trips and wars... and just plain old conquests through the great houses of Valyria by bedding all their daughters and taking the basterds when they are born.

Like I said... that's your choice.

Well...

I can say this much.

If it works... it really works.

If it fails... may all the gods help you for the monster you have created.

It's so damn useful having as much freedom as Valyrian culture gives us an opportunity to increase power in so many different area.

Yep. because if it didn't you'd be screwed.

Yeah, but we aren't helpless there either. Our Diplomacy IS at Master after all. If we can get rid of at least Shy and Depressed, we should be able to hold our own in Social Circles at least.
It's going to be very hard to lose the Shy trait.

Just saying.
