The focus here should really be on the characters and developing their dynamic IMO, and that best does that. The military exercise seems like something that could easily lose sight of that, given all the other people and things involved.

Also its phrased as a 'mini-expedition' which might mean that its sort of truer to the kinds of issues we might face, though that is colored by Six and Ling Qi only having a minimal grasp of what is actually involved in an expedition like this mission.

Boosting social cohesion seems good, since we did the combat option earlier and this will have the entire group. Also, GG hype!!!!

this will have longer term benefits, as it' insures stronger social team work can bleed into martial teamwork.

I'm leaning towards the military option on this one, it's an opportunity to train with the white plumes after all. The map locations are usually helpful for cultivation, and unlike the white plumes is always available, which we aren't going to have time for before setting off.
 
Honestly I am not sure this expedition needs more 'material support' beyond what which the duchess has already assigned? This is obviously something she already is totally invested in? 100 White Plume Guards means that 10% of the premium military in the province is already assigned to making this work. Eighty elite third realm cultivators who are probably on par with Inner Sect members, eighteen fourth realm cultivators who are probably WTF terrifying, two fifth realm who... I am not sure. Then the general who is I suspect on par with a sect elder, one of the more killy ones?

So I am very much okay with Cai Renxiang's decision because I do not think her selling her mum more heavily on investing would have been useful. Glorious Oppression Mum has obviously already bought into the expedition in a big way.

"You speak as if I am a madwoman, ready to destroy myself in battling the flow of time, and not one merely engaging in self reflection," Cai Renxiang said with faint exasperation.

"You have corrected your errors in perspective, and reflected quite enough. I merely worry that you will mire yourself in such musing and become your own obstacle," Meizhen shot back.

Ling Qi watched the two girls speak quietly, the dynamic was a little different than she expected. It was strange, her liege seemed a bit more… personable, with Meizhen. Some old ember of jealousy flared in her heart, though for what she wasn't sure. "While I can't speak for my lady. I have found some success in self reflection."

"Grudgingly," Sixiang added in amusement. "And with much prodding."

"And I will not gainsay the value of that," Meizhen replied with a huff. Glittering silver threads had begun to create an intricate geometric pattern on the silk in her hands. "We, the Bai are engaged in such matters ourselves at the moment."

It was Renxiang reflecting on her inflexible mindset regarding laws and rules after rereading her favorite book and Meizhen & LQ prodded her about what it was about during their knitting session.

Maybe the mini expedition will be to the Weilu tomb. I'm sure that the meng boy would love that.

Also with GG coming along our party can probably put up some pretty nasty buff chains between Qi's defensive buffs CRX's offensive buffs and whatever GG specializes in. And that's assuming that our two new friends don't have any buffs which is probably untrue. I'd expect Xia to have some pretty good buffs working with the white plume regiment.

Miniexpedition sounds like a natural answer. Especially considering that we chose combat cohesion last time.

Another highly contentious one, I see.

An expedition is a much more relevant way to appraise everyone's skills and ability to work together, IMHO.
