I think we should not be aggressively friendly. It could create a bad first impression and perhaps even make us look unprofessional in her eyes.
Lets be formal and let her get comfortable. She will have enough time to get to know us better.

can we vote? 2 hr mark

the main reason for me, to not be friendly, is she might be a red shirt leeroy jenkins and gonna die as Cai ablative armor.

also does her cai mom made armor can talk shop with ours and our friends gowns?

Moratorium should be over now.

i am thinking the uniformity of their aura is a cover against social or perception arts from identifying officers during battle or something
By my read it's an extension of the idea of formation arts (as in arts used by a military formation, rather than Formations the spellcasting thing). I would consider such arts to be present in any part of the world that possesses professional soldiery (either as a standing army, or mercenaries), and that any art approved for use by Cai Shenhua for her elite units would be an art that encourages uniformity among practitioners for operational benefits, like a passive shielding of thoughts or syncing of motion.

If that's true, then the benefits would actually allow the soldiers to have much richer internal lives as they don't have to spend any effort to maintain rank and discipline, and thus can devote their entire attention during relatively monotonous times like travel to whatever. I'd expect to see quite a few philosophers come out of the White Plume if the Cai lasts for a couple hundred years.

I don't think people understand how the friendly option may come off. In the context of this situation (we're her superior here, she's been given a lot of responsibility and trust, the pressure is on for her too), in the context of her military background (and Xia Ren likely being family) and her current position, and in the context of this Eastern culture-inspired story, formality is the respectful and expected tone to take. By being formal, we'd be respecting her boundaries, what she's comfortable with and what she knows. That is a better start to friendship in this case because otherwise we'd be throwing her off-balance. She'd see informality as inappropriate, unexpected and would immediately start wondering what we're trying to achieve by acting so informal.
Also being formal doesn't mean being insincere because as has been said before, the Moon has many faces. Ling Qi of course is gonna have to adapt to different political situations in her life and if she starts learning early, so much the better. Just like the Sincere Negotiator skill, LQ can learn how to be true to herself while not showing her full hand.

somewhat dismayed/laughing at the people bending over backwards to discount Ling Qi and Sixiang's observations about the White Plumes

[X] Be friendly, show her around and introduce her to your spirits. They will be members of the party too.

voting to be friendly to see what she does when she is not comfortable. we already know what will happen if she is comfortably ensconced in conventional, acceptable behavior. what will she think when she is confronted with something she does not already like? I feel that knowing information like this is important for the mission ahead, more important than combat familiarity.

So you want to make her off-balance on our first encounter? That's testing her responses and easily be seen as aggressive, instead of just setting the tone as comfortable and in the spirit of cooperation. She's gonna be our bodyguard, we shouldn't be assessing her as a potential threat. If you want to get to know someone and start the relationship on a cordial tone, you meet them where they're at, not purposefully testing them to catch them off balance and deliberately making them uncomfortable.

There's no way that we'll be maintaining professionalism the whole journey. Might as well get it over with.
