Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Sixiang faded, and she was left alone.

Except, that wasn't really true, was it?

Ling Qi reached down and traced her fingers along the folds of her gown. The silk was cool, and the energies infusing it thrummed at her touch. "I'll be back soon, okay?" She said quietly.
My heart. She does recognize the budding spirit and clearly grew attached already.
The tower was empty tonight, there was no gibbous moon hanging above, but only a thin grinning crescent, half hidden behind the clouds. But even if the dusty stones were quiet, the air was thick with moonlight.
You know it makes total sense with the month-long turns that we'd cultivate arts of a given moon under the light of said moon.

As for the rest of the chapter... Wow.

History, lessons, insight into the nature of her patron moon, growing up and making choices about which parts she calls her own.

I like that the way Wind Thief grants flight is by bending the rules; it's not that you reject the Law of gravity, but you become something that doesn't care about it.

Not sure about the vote, I think they're all fairly close in value to me with offensive a bit behind the other 3. Avoid, Speed and Stealth are pretty much the core of the art, and it's clearly about more than just ultimate speed. Especially with an option to reinforce the offensive aspect which is apparently staying, which fits the narrative of it I guess.

Probably gonna wait and see what arguments get brought up in favor of each option before deciding.

ETA: self-assurance at the core of the art does have me leaning toward Avoid or Stealth (can't touch this/can't find me), plus gentle/warm are funnier characterizations for this art than tempestuous or cold. (though being a stormbringer is always cool)

This was an absolutely amazing chapter, @yrsillar.
I loved it and am very happy that leaving the dress behind won.

Regarding the vote - this was a chapter very much reminding us of our roots and a little mouse being able to steal the winds from the gods.

So which wind should greet her first?

Huh... I honestly didn't remember where we'd gotten Wind Thief from, and I think I confused it with Fairy's Lark and just figured we found it in one of the archive dives.
Nah we got it from the EPC capstone Moon quest. When we went on a trip to LQ´s hometown, formed SSC and got a gift in the choice of one of three arts. All of them with very Moon connected myths/stories.

I'd just like to say this update is one of my all time favorites in how it weaves Ling Qi's desire to make the world a better place with the lessons of her moon patrons.
"I've left a lot of your lessons behind," ling Qi said to the empty sky. There were many things from those cruel years that she had put behind her, and though she retained some, others she had rejected, one by one. "Total freedom is a lie," she said softly.

The moon twinkled overhead, silent.
Also the Grinning Moon is at the very least amused by her little sister's ambition, and likely approves of her desire to build upon what the GS of the Moon made in days long past.

I don't know what I want to vote for yet, but I want to say how much I enjoyed this update. The scene descriptions really captured my imagination and made me visualize it in a way I don't usually do when reading. Beautiful.

[] The warm western wind, herald of spring (enhances Avoid effects of art)

I like this one. Ling Qi already has a Winter theme but also an End theme, and when Winter ends it's followed by spring. I think it fits the whole "small endings are also beginnings".

[X] The warm western wind, herald of spring (enhances Avoid effects of art)

I'm leaning towards this as my favorite option, in part due to Xepheria's arguments. In my opinion, this is the most meaningful option. It syncs very well with our FSS insight, which will only become increasingly important to us as we get started on FSS+.

There are endings and Endings, only the very last one is final. Just as winter ends in spring, small endings are new beginnings.

This insight directly adds meaning to the transition between winter and spring. Selecting the western wind here will further develop this concept, which is already core to Ling Qi's character. The western wind is a force of positive change, a new beginning that is worthy of following an old ending. It represents Ling Qi's attitude toward change in general, shown not only by her FSS insight, but her SCS one as well.

There is no peace in emptiness, no content in stillness. Stagnation is death; act, change, move, think, and grow until the very end.

The FSS insight provides Ling Qi's reasoning behind the SCS insight. She values the rapid pace of change in SCS as she views change as a force of good - she views endings as opportunities for something new. The western wind, through the image of spring, further exemplifies the positive sides of new beginnings. As a concept to be added to the successor of SCS, this option seems to fit best.

I think I am going to approval vote for stealth and speed, I think.

his is reminiscent of original foundation of the art, where the girl who stole the wind ran so fast that the gods couldn't catch her.

[] the gentle eastern wind, unnoticed by all (enhances stealth effects of art)

While this one speaks more about Ling Qi's whole temperament and outlook. The little mouse caught in larger events, being all sneaky sneaky, but with enough power that she could thumb her nose at them.

I prefer this one. The cardinal point and season are really fluff description, I think, no need to relate them to any insights from other arts.
And the best way to tank a punch has always been to not be there when it lands, more Avoid is always good.
Not to mention that it is perfectly in line with a Flight Art : what is flying but falling and avoiding the ground? ;)

Shit, I didn't think that Ling Qi was going to take off her armor-dress and then just head back into the Dreaming tower. It seems kinda dumb to not have one of her most useful talismans when wandering off like this.
That's entirely the point. She removed all of her safety blankets and went off to do something crazy because that's exactly what the art is all about.

Yeah Northern wind, Bringer of Storms sounds so cool and in the future, I would love to see the commonalities b/w the girl who stole the Wind itself from the Gods and LQ.

As for Eastern Stealth Wind, it really is a throwback to the old LQ, the clever stealthy mouse who survived through wits alone. Darkness was her friend, it hid her when she needed it. It makes sense that stealth would now make LQ untouchable.

Moratorium over

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THAT UPDATE WAS AMAZING FUCK!

FUCKING YAY!

"You know, I have to ask, what brought this on?" Sixiang asked curiously.

Ling Qi was silent as she stared down at her dress, lying spread out on the bed. The silk seemed to ripple under the light, the intricate patterns stitched along the hems shifting and dancing subtly.

Standing here, wearing mundane silks, Ling Qi felt deeply uncomfortable. Contrary to what some rumors said, she did change out of her clothes at times. She still bathed, she still set the dress aside when going to sleep, though that was rare. Sometimes on particularly lazy days she would even wear her sleeping shift into the meditation room.

This would be the first time she had gone out without it in a long time though.

"I don't think I can cultivate Wind Thief well while wearing this," Ling Qi said, still looking down at the dress. "At least… not at first."

She felt pressure, as if Sixiang was resting their chin on her shoulder and leaning against her back. "I don't think talisman's interfere with cultivation, even ones like that."

"The dress won't interfere, but I think my mindset will," Ling Qi said thoughtfully. "It's too safe."

Sixiang was silent for a moment. "You don't think you'll be able get the full lessons of the art if you're feeling safe?"

"That's why I'm going off alone too," Ling Qi said. "If you could, I'd like you to stay dormant or cultivate internally yourself, while I'm doing this.."

"...Ling Qi, are you planning to do something crazy?" Sixiang asked warily.

"I'm not planning too," Ling Qi said lightly.

They sighed. "...Just stay safe crazy girl, we still have dance lessons to do."

"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Ling Qi laughed.

Sixiang faded, and she was left alone.

Except, that wasn't really true, was it?

Ling Qi reached down and traced her fingers along the folds of her gown. The silk was cool, and the energies infusing it thrummed at her touch. "I'll be back soon, okay?" She said quietly.

And then she was gone, a shadow passing through the door.

She had to go before she could change her mind.
AHHHHHHH

"I've left a lot of your lessons behind," Ling Qi said to the empty sky. There were many things from those cruel years that she had put behind her, and though she retained some, others she had rejected, one by one. "Total freedom is a lie," she said softly.

The moon twinkled overhead, silent.

"Living only for yourself is empty and childish, and only the mighty and the foolish can pretend that it offers anything but misery and destruction," Ling Qi said thoughtfully. "Such a life is the life of a rabid beast."

Ling Qi held out her hand and watched the play of moonlight, filtered by the clouds on her skin. "But it isn't wrong to do things for yourself. Some chains should be broken, some rules are wrong. It isn't wrong to want to fly, as long as you remember your landing."

There was a charge in the air, an attention that she could feel, beating down on her mind. "It isn't wrong to steal the wind from its vault, to let it out into the world."

Beneath her, the ground, the forest and the Sect dropped away. She stood now on a promontory of crumbling stone, over a ravine miles deep, its bottom hidden even to her eyes. It was a fall even she could not survive. Below were the Gods, cruel and greedy, with all the riches and wonders of the world in their vaults.

And she was just one girl, so very small in the end. What madness could possess her, to think that she could defy the gods so?

Ling Qi smiled to herself, and stepped out into the open air.

The wind screamed in her ears as she plunged downward, and Ling Qi's heart pounded with it. The walls of the ravine blurred by, and the cold stone below beckoned. This was a dream, but dreams were real enough in their way.

The Grinning moon was many things, it rejected constraints, all constraints, this she refused. It loved cleverness and tricks, and this she accepted. She recalled vaguely a text she had read last year, claiming that the Grinning Moon was not the patron of criminals, but clever investigators. She had found it odd at the time, but she now knew it was not wrong.

The Grinning Moon did not care about goals, it did not care about motivations. Perhaps it's manifestations and avatars did, but the moon did not. The Grinning Moon was a thing of action and movement. Call it a heist or a sting, a casing or an investigation, the moon cared not. It only cared that you acted, that you sought to live and run and fly, to match your mind against others and come out on top.

As the ground approached, solid and inviolate, Ling Qi came to understand the core virtue of the Grinning Moon. That which underlaid all the rest.

Self Assurance.

Ling Qi looked at the approaching ground, and felt dormant meridians churn to life. The howl of the wind transformed into her laughter, and the shadows of the ravine closed in as a welcoming embrace.

Zephyr's Mocking Escape: B rank
Duration: Long
The user immerses themselves in wind and darkness, becoming nothing more than a flitting shadow in a windy night. Filled with the joy of endless movement, they can only laugh as their foes attempt to grasp at what cannot be touched. Greatly increases Physical and Spiritual Avoid as well as speed and initiative. In addition the user gains G rank damage reduction against physical attacks, and cannot be impeded from reaching a destination by wholly physical barriers so long as they may perceive their destination. While active the user cannot be grappled or rooted by techniques of less than B rank, unless the enemy techniques potency exceeds theirs by at least two. This technique can be reactivated at D rank cost if done immediately upon the activation ending.

Breeze in the Vault: C rank
Duration: Short
Calling upon the mastery shown by the girl in slipping unnoticed through the realms of the gods, the user channels the qi of wind to become silent and trackless, passing through perception as no more than a silent breeze. Greatly increases most stealth derivatives while active. In addition the user may outright ignore the effects of formations and techniques of C rank or less (modified by potency) which would detect, impede or record them, without interacting with any conditional requirements that they might have.

Sable Crescent Step: B rank
A master of this art may bring its lessons together in a single movement, an impeccable step of matchless grace. Having advanced beyond the Sable Crescent Step, it's titular technique has begun to change as well focusing less on harm and more on mobility. The cunning master may find several uses for this movement. A single attack of equal rank or lower may be avoided, no matter how unerring the aim, as the user simply ceases to exist in the material world for a moment, rematerializing with Far range of their current position. If more offensively inclined may strike and rematerialize within Close range of their target, reducing damage or armor reduction by two ranks for the purposes of determining damage. If used defensively, recurring activation of this technique in the same scene have their qi cost reduced to C rank. Using the offensive variation resets the cost for the next activation.
Okay now that I have got my brain to stop screaming in glee here's the Art.

It has three techniques.

One of them is Sable Crescent Step compressed and mastered completely, and is an intangible superlative movement. But it treats offense as secondary explicitly, focusing more on intangibility and movement.

Breeze in the Vault is about silence, tracklessness and superlative stealth such that you can ignore formations and perception techniques of C rank or less. From Ling Qi's perspective, that's the peak of yellow ability. Obviously between this and the focus of the vision, this is a very important component of Laughing Flight of the Wind Thief.

And then Zephyr's Mocking Escape is doing a lot of things at once to achieve one result. It's making her really fast, improving Speed and Initiative greatly as well as Physical and Spiritual Avoid by making her too fast to hit. A portion of intangibility is also provided which grants her passive resistance to physical damage at G rank and cannot be impeded by wholly physical barriers. Trying to hit a fast moving and partially intangible being is really bloody hard. The last bit is about escape from rooting and grapple techniques, you can't catch her which is somewhat superseded by Ling Qi's own domain if she's in a scene with someone of SL 4 or higher, and she has immunity to effects that reduce speed, initiative or avoid bypassed by effects of rank C or higher. Basically one of my points is this has a lot of potential interaction and synergy with her Domain. My other point is that its well, to basically allow for what the Technique is called, a mocking escape. Get caught? Get free and yeet yourself away giggling all the while.

Given the way the art is structured, the offensive aspect is tied up in the mastered bundle of SCS and Laughing Flight of the Wind Thief is not Sable Crescent Step pretty demonstrably and on top of that it's treated as a secondary result by the SCS technique itself so I don't really want to take LFWT in that direction.

[] The cold south wind, which cut to the bone (enhances offensive aspects of art)

So I don't want this, it pokes at a very specific part of the art which is not particularly prominent.

[] the gentle eastern wind, unnoticed by all (enhances stealth effects of art)

This wind is all about poking Breeze in the Vault right in the gob and making it gooder. And I could see a point for that, particularly since a core component of Ling Qi's techniques, history, and Domain are all tied up in being unnoticed. Plus a thought that occurs is that being unnoticed does not necessarily mean being not present, and the way its worded and the way Breeze in the Vault looks I think it also leans into some ideas of "always there, but not necessarily seen or noticed". Like a servant in that vision and I really like a concept of "Always there, but not necessarily seen or noticed" for Ling Qi's Domain, because it fits with how it gives comfort to those she's close to. Pervasive comfort is *chefkiss*.

[] The tempestuous northern wind, bringer of storms (Enhances speed and initiative effects of art)
[] The warm western wind, herald of spring (enhances Avoid effects of art)

Now to highlight the importance of Zephyr's Mocking Escape, it has two vote options linked to it which highlights its importance and prominence and is reflective of how much it's doing at once. One part is about poking the Speed and Initiative and its the most straightforward one. The slightly less straightforward and I think more comprehensive option is one that affects intangibility, because it touches on the G rank physical damage reduction, being able to pass through physical barriers, and the grapple/restraint immunity, as well as the intangibility aspect of Sable Crescent Step that allows it to act as a perfect dodge.

The idea of a comforting presence that cannot be hurt or restrained makes me giggle and as I mentioned before Mocking Escape has a lot of components which are fun for Ling Qi's Domain.

Between the two I really like the West and East Winds, with maybe a slight preference for the East Winds.

Besides the fluff, this was the art we were going to use to replace Sable Crescent Step, yes? Since we used that mostly to avoid hits, increasing avoid for its replacement makes sense, even if I personally like stealth more.
