One aspect of this update that stood out to me is how much Ling Qi acts like a mother to Zhengui. She feels pain at the idea of letting Zhengui fight Wang Chao alone, as any mother would when sending her child off into the unknown. Her reaction to Zhengui's defeat is that he needs more work, an attitude far more typical of parents (especially helicopter parents) than of friends or even siblings. Ling Qi's attitude with respect to Zhengui is natural, as she raised him from an egg, but it likely reinforces and is being reinforced by an attitude of overprotectiveness towards those close to her in general. This attitude is mitigated by her advanced insight while being reinforced by other insights, tying in closely with our domain conflict and promise.
[] Try to arrange weekly training sessions for the next month with just Zhengui, Wang Chao and yourself. (More focused training, higher but more narrow skill bonuses, Zhengui gets better martial training.)
At first glance, this seems like the best option for both improving our cooperation with Zhengui and for helping Zhengui the most. These would be valid reasons for voting for this option, but if our goal is to make Ling Qi grow as a person, it's possible this option doesn't do as much as the other. Ling Qi would be improving her cooperation with Zhengui, but she would be growing through just the input of Wang Chao (and whatever she and her spirits gain from it). Better cooperation between Ling Qi and Zhengui would mean they are on more equal terms with each other, potentially mitigating the overprotectiveness issue. This may cause Ling Qi to see Zhengui as more closely tied to her own strength and cultivation. However, with just Wang Chao's input, which is likely to be mostly strategical, it is uncertain how much of this she would internalize.
[X] You have been trying to improve your social game. Keep pushing it. See if you can arrange something with not only Wang Chao, but also Alingge, Liang He and possibly others. (Social Benefits. Less focused training. Lower but wider skill bonuses. Zhengui gets more experience with other cultivators.)
There are a couple advantages to this option. Zhengui interacting more with others may reduce his dependency on Ling Qi, which would likely be healthy for both him and Ling Qi. As stated by the vote, there would be social benefits, which may have political benefits down the road.
Most importantly, this gives a chance for Ling Qi to interact with others in the context of training with Zhengui. This provides a chance for Ling Qi to more directly explore the issues that led to her heart demon. In particular, Ling Qi's interaction with Alingge in this update provides strong evidence that this would happen.
"That is a strange conclusion," Alingge replied, peering into the rising cloud of smoke and grit that consumed both combatants. "Empowering clan and companions is cultivation."
Exposure to viewpoints like these would help greatly in Ling Qi's character growth. One downside to this option is the lesser direct benefit to Zhengui and Ling Qi's cooperation with him, but that is only a part of the dilemna Ling Qi is facing. This option appears better for addressing Ling Qi's struggles holistically.
Another disadvantage to this option is that these gatherings will almost definitely be off-screened for the most part. However, selecting this option would likely result in more options for on-screen events or arcs with Alingge. This is where much of Ling Qi's character growth would be seen. It would be great if Ling Qi could become friends, if not close friends, with Alingge, and this option best facilitates this.
