He's been nice to us so we should go on a date?
That's terrible reasoning, very transactional, and almost perfect example of what Ling Qi has issues with.
Ling Qi obviously does not want to go, will almost certainly feel miserable, but feels forced to do so. And when Bao Qian notices Ling Qi is feeling miserable, he will also probably feel miserable (and if he does not, it will be a trike against him for me).
Why not go for a spar where we can actually both enjoy ourselves and get to know each other instead?
Because misery builds character, and I do so love the direction this is taking.
Besides that I hold hope that this is good for her, gets her to take steps out of her comfort zone check.
Allows our use of social finagling to see how up to par it is check.
And finally because this amuses me :p check.
Honestly if this really goes pear shaped at this point I'll eat my hat.

This seems like an actually quite important thing to learn about his character. How considerate he is of the feelings of of others when they're outside the norm(he's been doing a decent job so far), how empathetic versus pragmatic about it he is, and ultimately how tolerant of that weirdness is he? What's his outer limit?

I'm not concerned by bumping into it, because it will never not be an issue.

[X] Carefully accepted. She had to begin dialing down her discomfort somewhere. [Potentially, Information and improved relationship with Bao Qian, Ling Qi uncomfortable, potentially negative outcome.]

[x] Blurted out a request to spar instead, that helped cultivators understand each other, right?! [Lesser information and improved relationship with Bao Qian, Ling Qi spared a bad time]

Yes, which is why Ling Qi is such a well adjusted character with no hangups whatsoever. /sarcasm

Like, i can see people wanting to do the date, i can see lot of arguments for it.
There does not even need to be a justification beyond "i want to see this happen".
But "he has been nice" is an utterly abhorrent argument, women (or men) are not wending machines where a date (or sex) comes out if you put in enough "nice" tokens in.
And "misery builds character" is an utter bullshit saying. No, misery does not build character (or everything builds character), and is more likely to leave behind broken people who will spread that misery for others because "well look how well i turned out" leading to a circle of abuse.

Sorry, i know (well, assume) you did not mean anything by the saying, it's one of those sayings people use without really thinking about them, it's just one of my pet peeves (like hard work building character, fuck that).

A date is supposed to be about mutual enjoyment. That is quite literally the whole point of it.
Gotta disagree on this one. Maybe that's the ideal reason for dating, or the Disney reason, but not the only one. Sometimes it's to satisfy obligations to your mom/aunt/granny who wants to matchmake; sometimes it's cuz the matchmaker service is already paid for and you might as well get the money's worth (plus, free food); sometimes its pure social pressure like in some cultures where if you're unwedded after a certain age there's something wrong with you; and then there's the tons of people who go to singles events or meetup after a brief text conversation on match.com... It's perfectly possible to go into a date treating it like a chore or even an interview rather than expecting actual romance. There's nothing wrong with that.

Dating doesn't have to be this... big thing. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't end well. Like, Ling Qi didn't break down or wreck relationships with the Gu after seeing whatshisname Gu Xiulan's cousin a couple of times. I don't see what the big deal with having dinner with Bao Qian is.

I *like* Biao Qian, and I want to give him as much of a shot as I can. I mean, he was lovingly selected for us by a family full of capable cultivators that specialize in things like making deals that are good for all involved. He's a very good fit for what Ling Qi needs in a husband, and that should not be in any way surprising. I admit I liked mudboy... but I like Biao Qian more.

I disagree. Dating is supposed to be about long-term mate selection. As such, it behooves you to be honest (a relationship built on dishonest ground is not as stable), but enjoyment is not the primary purpose. Finding the right person to spend the rest of your life with is quite literally the whole point of it... both in determining if the person you're with is the right one, and in gathering further data about your own needs with which to be able to better make that assessment with others, if they are not.

And yes, I'm being overly assertive and ignoring the subtleties and other sides and whatnot... but as far as what is important in building a good life, my statement is more accurate than yours is. Proper long-term mate selection is critical, and dating is pretty much the place you do it.

Seems like picking the other one would just lead to Ling Qi having a bad time. Making her first dinner thing with someone a bad time is a bad idea long term for her and for him. We want her to change and leave her comfort zone but pushing too far too fast will not work out like everyone hopes.

Not interested in advancing a romantic subplot
