Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Now that was interesting. Loved the description of Ling Qi and Bai Meizhen relationship.
Also an important thing to remember, Sixiang is not human, and Ling Qi is becomming less so by the day. Trying to be a human will only lead to pain, instead they both need to learn how to live as who they are, and that lesson changes as they grow.
And Dreams are not just for the sleeping.

Thinking of voting for slow and contemplative. More group buffs would be good now that we decided to work more with our spirit family.

Damn, now that was interesting, and something which I feel will need time to process.

Especially the Way it seems that the greater spirits kind of seem to not particularly like humans in some ways?
I read that as the Moon respects Mother Earth and as such they want humans to keep Mother Earth's gift rather than discard it. Cultivators instead spend all their times trying to get rid of said gift.

If the the IPF option leads to speeding up our allies and spirits, then I think its worth it. Although narratively I kinda want these two cheer up, let lose and just dance

There's a part of me that wants the Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer, out of sheer thematic 'I want Ling Qi to be less gloomy!'

IPF I think, this arc has been all about Ling Qi trying to figure out how to make her little family unit work, and this breakthrough feels like it's part of her answer. (Not the whole thing obviously, but a piece of it)

"Yes I will," the muse said, and Ling Qi felt their qi pulse and flex experimentally. "I think I understand better now, what it means to be human and not. I'm not, and I never was. You're taking your own steps away from that…. If you don't like the world, then change it huh? I guess I forgot Grandmothers power in the waking world, huh?"

"Dreams aren't just for sleeping," Ling Qi said softly. It was funny, though it seemed childish to consider, at the core of every cultivator was a dream. She might have been approaching some things wrongly. Slowly, she stood. "Sixiang, will you dance with me again?"

I'm getting a real Neil Gaiman Sandman vibe from this one.

Praise be to the Dice Gods for they do bless us!

If only she could say the same for Ling Qi. Whatever arts she was cultivating now, whatever she composed, Ling Qi had no intention of connecting to the people around her even a little bit. they watched their human put on a mask of frost and venom, deflecting those who tried to come near. In some they saw only anger and pricked pride, in others they saw genuine hurt as their effort to reach out was rebuffed, and gradually the colors around them curdled. They saw pride sharpen into sneers and hope fade into dull disinterest and raised guards.

They tried to offer hints and nudges, but too often they were ignored. Perhaps they could have been more forceful, but with the Nightmare still heavy on both of them, they could not find the will to do it.

Fear had taken root in Sixiang. The last thing they wanted to do was make an annoyance of themselves.

This almost hurt to read, beautiful update. Our recent order from Renxiang to make friends may end up being good for us, even if it's uncomfortable.

[Denial. Trial.] Sixiang's whole being shuddered with the power pressed down upon them. Trial. That word encompassed uncounted years of meaning. Their greater selves were as gate and wall to those humans who chose to throw away the gifts of the [Two] and join their number as spirits. It was a kindness to break their mad ambition before they could destroy their humanity, or failing that, to prepare them for its loss. As the Second Born of [She Who Was] that duty overrode all other concerns.

This is interesting. Being the Second Born of She Who Was, I can see two possible interpretations of this.

The first is that the Moon as a whole is the Second Born, but personally the more likely and interesting interpretation is if you look at the phases of the Moon you will see that if you start with the Full Moon (Guiding) then the next phase is Waxing Gibbous, or Dreaming according to Forge Metaphysics, and having the first phase of the Moon be the Full Moon does make some sense (as would New Moon though this wouldn't make sense here with Dreaming being Second). The Full Moon being the Guiding Moon would also make sense with her being the first, 'Guiding' the way for the others.

(Edit: Realises Waxing Gibbous is in fact before the Full Moon. Ah, sometimes I can be a dumbass :p )

So the Eight Daughters of the Mother would be the Eight Phases of the Moon.

Just to point out, this would mean the first Humans and the phases of the Moon would be siblings, so the phases could be viewed as Ancestral Aunts.

So Aunty Xin is now canon is what I'm taking away from this.

On to the next point about this section, Trials and Tribulations. Often in Xianxia there are Tribulations when reaching sufficient realms, and two of the most common are Heavenly Tribulations (divine lightning) and Heart Demons.

If the Daughters of Mother view it almost as a duty to try and prevent Humans from throwing away their Humanity, well looking at the sort of things the phases represent, some correspond pretty well with some of the ideas often found in Heart Demons.

Heart Demons are already a thing in Forge as they were recently introduced, but what if they are in a sense orchestrated by the phases of the Moon however subtly, or at least the phases of the Moon are also incarnations of the causes of Heart Demons.

Heavenly Tribulations could also be a thing if the Father has Sons/Daughters who effectively smack down people when they try to break through in higher realms, something which hasn't come up yet.

These incarnations of Tribulations would also fit in a Yin Mother and Yang Father idea.

All pretty neat, and cool how whereas in most Xianxia such Tribulations are due to Humans going against the will of the heavens, in this case it's the Heavens not wanting humans to give up their humanity, with the Yin Motherly aspects of the Heavens trying to block their path (Moon Phases) and perhaps Yang Fatherly aspects of the Heavens trying to mercy kill them instead of letting them do so? Or maybe actually punishing them for from their point of view throwing away their Fathers gifts.

Just some neat half formed ideas.

However, in that carriage, they were thankful for her. Sixiang was too weak to speak up, but conscious. Watching Ling Qi process the pain that they had felt all through the battle hurt as if they were being wounded all over again.

It was good then, that the girl was able to offer Ling Qi something, a thread to hold onto and pull herself back up. That most precious of things for humans who cultivated. Purpose.

And if, in that moment, they spied a crack in the glass, and peered at the ------- beneath, they would not say a word. Not because of the glower of the abomination the girl wore, or the threatening hiss of steel from the one at her side, but because it would be poor form to repay the one helping her Ling Qi by spilling secrets.

If I understand correctly this means Sixiang's original impression of Renxiang being a puppet was a misunderstanding due to Renxiang's emotions being clouded to her senses, which is neat to see.

This update has been so subtly feelsy in surprisingly many ways.

[] Something fast paced and dramatic. [Empowers Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer, shifts technique focus to movement and personal buffs]
[] Something slow and contemplative [Empowers Illustrious Phantasmal Festival. Shifts technique focus to Area of effect, group buffs and terrain control]

Currently I'm leaning of slow and contemplative, firstly as we already have Wind Thief for movement in the (relatively) near future, but also because it just seems like theme more in respect to this event. Will see some great arguments for both sides soon no doubt.

Great update!

Yeah. One can make reasonable arguments for EDD mechanically, but narratively and character-wise I feel like it would be the wrong decision at this point.

So thoughts:
  1. Dear god those rolls. The meme lives on.
  2. The confusing scene seems to refer to the bloody moon trial, where apparently one of the ancient duties of the moon is to act as a Trial to those humans aspiring to ascend(?), either breaking their ambition or better preparing them for its success.
  3. Wow so Shenhua apparently destroyed something called the Court of Dreams in the big tree, combined with CRX's apparent inscrutability it's clear why Sixiang distrusted her initially.
  4. The dream perspective of Sixiang, such a good scene. How she grew to understand more and more until a seed of fear sprouted, and how this shared mutual understanding let them try once more to help Ling Qi on her Way.
Update was worth the wait.

Now for the mechanical bits; PMR looks fine for levels 1-2 (though we don't really have a basis of comparison), and likely our experience here will help a lot in putting it into practice. As for PLR, I'm definitely for going for the IPF into area/CC/buffs which is a) our core package and b) not competing with Wind Thief for mobility.

@yrsillar quick questions. Why are we at sl 2 with Six? We had SL2 at the end of FoD and got a rank up during the "nature of dreams" updates in ToD. Did we get a downgrade at the start of ToD?

Does anyone else feel like the second fantasy doesn't give much in the way of improvement?

First off, that was beautifully written Yrsillar, and leaves some delicious breadcrumbs for us to ruminate on.

I think that as regards our art upgrade, granting us an art with AoE, group buffs and terrain control, best suits our needs, and is most in keeping with the themes of this arc namely our agreeing to allow Zhengui to be present for combat, and allaying Sixiang's demonstration of our isolation. Given our suite of AoE effects (FVM, FSS, BKSD - likely to be trained next turn), terrain control would be a significant addition to our build and one we do need.

Choosing to focus on movement and self buffs would be a mistake in my view. Sixiang's viewpoint this update showed their concern about our isolation and selfishness - choosing to ignore those concerns would fly in the face of the story progress I believe. Additionally, we already have a top tier movement centric art in the form of LFotWT. While movement is important to Ling Qi, I don't think it is central to her, and doubling down on movement feels like emphasising the wrong parts of her story.

I will be supporting:

Wow do I love the perspective we get here on CRX.

I agree with the sentiment so far on leaning into the AoE aspect of PLR.

Both narratively and in character development.

[] Something fast paced and dramatic. [Empowers Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer, shifts technique focus to movement and personal buffs]

Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer: C

Duration: Short

Having begun to understand the nature of the dreams, the user flits from place to place, shrouded in the phantoms of paths not taken. While active the users speed is increased significantly. Techniques which would still hit the user have a chance(decreasing based on the attackers perception) to simply fail, shattering instead some of the dreamlike phantom images the user is shrouded in. Each use of this technique generates two 'charges' which do not stack with additional uses.

[] Something slow and contemplative [Empowers Illustrious Phantasmal Festival. Shifts technique focus to Area of effect, group buffs and terrain control]

Illustrious Phantasmal Festival: B

Duration: Long

The foundational technique from which all others in the art arise. The user gathers their qi and the memories of their night of revelry and expels them through every available channel in a rush of power and gleaming many colored mist. Within Close range centered on the user, ghostly dancers ever shifting in form coalesce from the midst in a riot of color, laughter, music and movement. Amidst the revel the user is but one figure among many, and in its ever shifting tides, only those of sharp eye can even attempt to reach or strike the user directly. Within it's confines the senses of enemies are confused, penalizing perception. This technique may be renewed as if it were D rank at instant speed at the end of its duration. This technique allows for stealth and is an illusion effect, affecting all senses. The festival counts as an opponent for the purposes of determining multiattacker bonuses.

Damn it, mind says that Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is more practical choice, but heart says that Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer is so much cooler than the other one.
