Renascence: A Homura Quest

For some reason, I could swear I've read/heard ... like, 80-90% of that exchange somewhere before. Weird.

Does the perspective change signify something in particular?
Huh. I may have done a similar interaction at some point, I guess? I'm not sure.

Yes. It symbolizes that I've gotten way too used to writing in the second person.

That first paragraph has both Kyouko and Homura speaking. That leads to a disconnect on the following paragraphs. I thought Kyouko was saying, "Happy hunting, Kyouko.", implying that there were two Kyouko's in the scene. However Kyouko referred to Homura as "Homura" earlier, so it wasn't some strange trippy perspective.

Would probably rewrite as:

Note that I removed the commas connecting the dialog to the narrative, too, as keeping them as separate sentences seemed to fit better.
Thanks for pointing this out. Not sure how I feel about the commas, but I've split it up for clarity.

I made the sword better. Not perfect, but definitely better. Further suggestions for improvement are appreciated, though.

Edit: Sadly, the handle length's not readily fixable--Caladbolg II's handle is weird as hell, and stretching it causes complications with integration.

Handle aside, it looks way better.

The only suggestion I have is inverting the crossguard so the quillons curve towards the tip of the sword instead of towards the pommel, but that's pretty much it.

Okay so someone already blue truth'd one of the ones I was going to ask, and got a gold truth in response, so I won't go over that specifically again. For reference, they were:

"The other fourteen slots are for connections to other people, and we need to fill all fifteen to achieve the golden ending.

You're on the right track."

For brevity's sake, I'll be referring to the revealed phenomenon of a close companion from Homura's past loops being capable of 'stepping in' and replacing Homura when needed or wanted once unlocked as 'Memento Meguca' in part due to the requirement of a personal item from them to effect the transformation to and from one girl to another. Whether that's the terminology Higure wants to use moving forward of if he has one of his own already is TBD of course.

The fourteen slots representing the Memento Meguca are most readily filled via high-stress situations near a location held in great importance to a specific Memento Meguca

Not only does Homura need to recover all fourteen Memento Meguca to in part achieve her Golden Ending, she must also somehow reconcile their existences with that of their present counterparts: method to be discussed when the scenario comes up In Character.

If the above Blue Truth is accurate, handling this reconciliation poorly can result in losing access to the Golden Ending in a given loop.

The various Memento Meguca are aware of each other's existence and their identities, but can only provide hints to Homura as to who they are and how to recover them.

The Memento Meguca will be vital to overcoming Walpurgisnacht in a way that does not require Madoka (or another girl) sacrificing herself with a reality altering wish

It is not possible for magical girls not strictly involved in the canon of the series "Puella Magi Madoka
Magica", example Nanoha Takamachi, to be among the number of the Memento Meguca

Unfortunately legalese I am not 100% proficient in... here's hoping I didn't goof up any of these.

Memento Meguca will work for these, and I'll understand what is meant if it is used in the future.

The fourteen slots representing the Memento Meguca are readily filled via high-stress situations near a location held in great importance to a specific Memento Meguca. Other conditions beyond this must be met, however.

Homura does not necessarily need to reconcile the existences of the Memento Meguca with that of their present counterparts to achieve the Golden Ending.

The various Memonto Meguca are not generally aware of each other's existence and identities.

The Memento Meguca can be highly useful in overcoming Walpurgisnacht in a way that does not require Madoka (or another girl) sacrificing herself with a reality altering wish, but they are not necessarily vital.

It is not possible for magical girls not strictly involved in the canon of the series "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" and its spin-offs, for example Nanoha Takamachi, to be among the number of the Memento Meguca.

Good job. There's probably a loophole or two in there, but these were good blues, and ones I'm happy to see come my way.

Hmm, let me try something, for clarity, if nothing else.

While not necessary to achieve the Golden Ending, reconciling the existences of the Memento Meguca with those of their present counterparts would make doing so significantly easier, such that you, Higure, would consider it unlikely that we, the players, would succeed without doing so.

Trying to Explain

[] Now, give me a minute to cleanse my Soul Gem and figure out what we're doing next.

You're...really not sure what to say to that. The truth would be too incredible to believe, you think, so you'll need to lie. You lie to everyone, after all. Even when you're telling the truth, you're deceiving them, making them trust you when they should not.

"I was nearby, but couldn't actually do much to help. Getting Kyouko out here to help you was all I could do. It's...complicated. Magic issues. Regardless, it's probably best not to bring this up with her later--she probably won't remember it."

Ruki looks at you like you're completely insane, and you take some comfort in the fact that Madoka is not staring over her shoulder, so you're probably not hallucinating all of this. Of course, she's right to think you're insane, and should probably run away from you right now.

"...She won't remember it? What does that even...? Why? Senpai, are you okay?"

Realizing that there's no way in hell she's going to just take something something like that at face value, you decide to run with the insanity angle a bit, "No. I also do not have any idea what we just fought, or why it was targeting me. That has been happening frequently, lately." Really, someone should have killed you a long time ago; it's absurd you've lasted this long.

By her hesitant, understandably fearful expression, you're pretty sure she thinks you've cracked. That is probably better than the alternative...although, honestly, you think it would have been better to let Kyouko handle this, in hindsight. You should probably just let her handle everything, from now on. You're really not--

Catching the patterns of your own thoughts, you raise a hand, "Just," You pause, "Give me a moment..." You pull out Sachiel's Grief Seed and cleanse, making sure she can see your Corruption level as you do so. Manipulation is the only way you--

Cutting off the thought, you relax as the Despair is drawn from you, the world around you seeming to gain color and brighten. Ruki's worried gaze fades into relief as your Soul Gem clears, and give her a small, probably weak-looking smile.

"...That's better. Remember Ruki, Corruption can interfere with your mind, if you let it get high enough. It is not just a limit to your magic usage. As for what just happened...I'm not sure. I remember Kyouko was here, but Kyouko couldn't be here, so..."

Ruki regards you with a furrowed brow, "But she was. I'm not sure how, but she definitely was, so why do you think she wouldn't remember it? What aren't you telling me, Senpai?" She seems very concerned.

You aren't sure what to say to that. You don't have any reasonable explanation, including the truth, so you're not sure what you can tell her. The only thing you can do is...pretend everything's fine and take refuge in audacity, like Kyouko was going to.

"Everything will make sense in time, Ruki. Don't worry about it for now."

She's worrying about it. You can see in her eyes that she's worrying about it. You look around for an excuse to change the topic and, finding nothing, find an excuse, "Where's Nagisa?"

Ruki reluctantly sets the problematic topic aside, but you get the feeling she's not going to leave this alone for long, "She ran off during the fight. I didn't try to stop her, considering the situation."

You sigh heavily, feeling like everything has fallen out of control. Nagisa's roaming Mitakihara in the dead of night, Ruki's growing increasingly suspicious, Nanoha's lying unconscious in the grass, you're dangerously close to losing your mind again, your injuries still haven't healed completely, and you're completely exhausted.

None of that can compare, however, to the fact that you just turned into Kyouko.

'What did you Wish for, Madoka?'

Probably something along the lines of Homura not having to be alone anymore. Not that wording, of course, but something similar.

... Unless Madoka's Wish has already been elaborated on? I think it has, maybe. 🤷

I like the new avatar. I was confused, at first, but I do like it.

Truth is, I just discovered I can transform into my friends for a while and they come complete with their own psyche, so I'll just kick back and let Koko take the wheel for a while. Peace out, my rookie."

It has not. Homura's memories of last loop trail off around the time of Madoka's Wish.

Thanks! Decided it was time for a change, and I'm very fond of Amakusa.

"Nope." You say.

"Nope?" Your adorable Ruki asks.

"Nope."

In a flash of red light, you're Kyouko, and Homura's sitting quietly in the back of your head, trying to rest and regain sanity.

You look at the Rookie, who's regarding you wide-eyed.

"Nope." She says, her voice awed and enlightened.

You nod firmly, patting her on the head, "Nope."

I think switching back to Kyouko might not be a bad idea, regain some trust, and also give the Homubrain time to recuperate a little...

I am convinced.

I think switching back to Kyouko right now is a bad idea. I also think letting Homura do anything as she is right now, stressed, tired and at least two thirds insane, is a bad idea.

But I trust Ruki more than I trust our ability to let Homura rest without finding a new plot hook to pursue.

[x][Switch] Swear Ruki to secrecy and switch back to Kyouko.

Because we need the break from being Homu.

[x][Nagisa] Hunt for Nagisa.

Because best cheese should not be left unattended.

[x][Nanoha] Just take her with you for now, you don't want to leave her behind while you find Nagisa. Afterwards? Eh... Kyouko knows how to stealfind a Hotel Room right?

Nothing's springing to mind for me for other things... Any ideas?

Going with this. It seems like the best of some not great options. If I remember the thresholds correctly we're like 4 SAN away from audio-visual hallucinations.

Also Ruki just got Harvey Dented by Joker Doll's acid tomato. She's earned a bit of trust :V

[x][Switch]Remain as Homura
Let's not open that bag of worms just yet.

[x][Nagisa]Leave Nagisa alone.
Tempted to hunt for her, but my knowledge of human children tells me that's likely to backfire. Nagisa barely knows Homura and Ruki; if they go looking for her, she's likely to hide. If they just leave, she'll head back to the church.

[jk][Nanoha]Stick her in the shield. That's safe, right?
[x][Nanoha]Take her to Sayaka's house.
