Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

My read on this is that it again highlighted the effect of the "Art advantage" that cultivators have over typical spirit beasts.

On paper, the Antlion had comparable stats to us. In practice, we were able to largely counter all its abilities, and GCD allowed us to readily dodge its tech-less flailing.
I would also note that this Antlion is an ambush predator, and most of its techs probably revolve around that. Once we avoided the initial ambush we were in an excellent position to defeat it.

[X] Go along with it. Suyin can protect herself, and you… You're not weak, this isn't like the dream. Who are you to deny Suyin her own bout of good fortune.

As I said in discord, suyin must gain specimens!! And while unlikely it would be funny for her to get a second spirit out of this. One with too many eyes and tentacles.

Truly suyin is a scary girl.

Suyin wants more bugs, lets go get her bugs.
It makes her happy and is no big problem for us.

Let's try this - just binged the whole think and this looks like fun

Yeah, need to respect Suyin's ability to defend herself.

He was obviously moved out by some stronger beast (not enough food for a bunch of them, not normal hunting ground).

Better not go right in the maw of the thing that can make it flee.

[X] Dissuade Li Suyin from following the trail. Surely she already had plans in the region she had already scouted out. Who even knows how far the beasts trail descends.

Surely we need to worry about some Jabberwocky down the rab...ant-lion hole but our Alices are sturdy ones and they both have escape talismans.;)

thank goodness she has an escape rope just in case

We both have escape talismans so we should be fine.

It's nice to see the power balance, for lack of better wording, equalised between Ling Qi and Li Suyin. To see Suyin being capable of being a badass in her own right.

I especially enjoyed that bit at the end where basic field science being done gave Qi the heebie jeebies, so much for us being the creepy thing in the mists when some incidental splatter creeps us.

"Do you think we should follow it's trail?" Li Suyin asked, crouching near the beasts oozing maw. "I had scouted out a path to the third level already, but if this leads back to a nest… There could be so much more to find."

Ling Qi raised an eyebrow. "You want to tangle with a bunch of these?" She asked incredulously.

Li Suyin shook her head, even as she flicked her wrist, drawing a carving knife the length of her forearm from storage. "There isn't enough nutrition in this region to support multiple adults of this size, perhaps a mated pair at most, the upper caverns would be stripped bare if there were more. We might find juveniles, or even eggs though! A sample of the carapace still in development could advance…"

Li Suyin is certainly getting into the whole SCIENCE! mode. Given her tendency towards medicine and skeletal minions, I'm predicting her to travel down the route of melding and meshing organic and inorganic materials to create terrible and powerful monstrosities for defense and utility. Hopefully, she doesn't go the way that the Skaven clan Moulder did in Warhammer Fantasy. We probably don't need living breathing beasts genetically mutated and surgically improved anytime soon.

I do wonder what advancements she can figure out from these monstrosities though. Maybe have her skeleton minions armored in a type of chitin to protect against flame and heat attacks? Perhaps modify a minion to have a gravitational attack to drag people across the battlefield against their will? Figure out a way to have an expanding chitin shell so that a wall can be created to intercept enemy projectile attacks? Improve her minion's senses to underground disturbances?

If Li Suyin does find some eggs, I think that it might push her to develop her organic science side. Figure out why there is this mutual toxicity between the two realms and find a way to leverage that toxicity for powerful cures and poisons. Either way, I'm excited to see what other science Li Suyin pulls out and how this helps her develop. And all of this before her breakthrough to green!

Speaking of not yet breaking through to green, it must have been humiliating if her challenger (who lost to her) was partially, or even fully, green. A late yellow/silver beat you in medicine making. That's pretty depressing.

At first I was going to offer the dissenting opinion from concern that some other Hunter forced this beast to leave it's old hunting grounds. But after a reread and learning that everyone has escape tailsmans it should be safe enough. We just need to prepare to run if something really nasty shows up.

In other news this update offered a lot of information for my GNAWING ONES theories. Super Excited for more!

Secrets and wonders can be found in the most tenebrous corners of this place.

Tentatively. Unless someone has a good reason not to i think this is the better option. Yes, it's high(er) risk, but the reward is also higher and with the escape talismans...
Honestly, Ling Qi does need some more fighting experience.

Gotta keep in mind that the known avenues to danger are likely to be exponentially worse given the fact that the Antlion likely used this as a safer alternative to secure nutrition

That, or he was exploring further away from it's nest because it depleted the close(r) environment(s)...
