Please lets not go down the road that is Kekkei Genkais. Is it really necessary to make Daisuke into such a special snowflake?
It's honestly far more intriguing to come up with something special within the limits of normal shinobi.
The Second Hokage, the Third Hokage and Jiraiya are prime examples of badass shinobis without resorting to asspulls.
Well, Daisuke will soon have two Original Techniques to his name, both of which include swords. Aside from Fuin and Shuriken, his Jutsu schools are at Journeyman plus Shuriken at Adept. Plus he's nearly an Advanced wielder of the Bunshin already, with his high Intelligence & Chakra Control sure to help him derive new techniques from it.
If Daisuke ends up with a Kekkai Genkai, it'll be because he literally made it by himself from hard work. After all, he has Practiced or higher in nearly all his Skills, and all his Attributes (sans Sense) are Above-Average if not higher. There's nothing Daisuke can't achieve if he merely tries hard enough.
Well, I like Orochimaru and he managed to get a ton of bloodlines by transplantation and otherwise despite not being born into them - so I'm still hopeful we'll get a chance to transplant at least one good bloodline.
Orochimaru and Kabuto's biomods were super cool, and I want to see if we can similarly modify our body to become stronger.
Well, remember Moegi*? She uses Wood Release in Boruto (in the trivia section somewhere?). I think they should be okay with us spontaneously developing it if it works for her. I don't remember if they actually bothered to justify her having it somehow, but I don't think they did.
problem is, Moegi could reasonably have a senju ancestor somewhere in her family tree. Daisuke is from a completely different country, so it's much more unlikely (though not completely impossible. Who knows if in the warring states era there were other wood style user after all...)
Buddy, we just invented the technique. Give us some time to work out the kinks to it. Regarding using a bell instead. No. That defeats the entire point of the technique where hitting certain points of the sword produces certain tones that cause different effects (i.e. blindness, vertigo, etc.). A bell doesn't do that. Let us wait and see how it upgrades before we start talking about changing the technique entirely.
Yes, from the last story post Vesvius made the whole genjutsu is based on the sword, so that has to be a part of the jutsu. In that case the only thing that can be switched out is the fan. A ring would therefore be better.
This I agree with, however the prop needs to change. The sooner the better. The prop in use at the moment is pretty useless, and is reducing the efficiency of the technique unnecessarily.
Yes, a ring is not as visible as a fan, and therefore the jutsu is not as easily deciphered or noticed by an enemy ninja.
I'm only mentioning and advocating this so that we can change the prop before we have to use it in a real combat situation. Yes I do understand that we shouldn't change the fundamentals of the technique by using a bell.
Anyway, @Vesvius would it be possible to switch out the fan with a ring? It is after all the different frequencies created along the blade that make and break the jutsu, not the instrument used to tap it?
Anyway, @Vesviuswould it be possible to switch out the fan with a ring? It is after all the different frequencies created along the blade that make and break the jutsu, not the instrument used to tap it?
The fan is part of the character. There is no way that the fan would get destroyed or damaged. Even if it does it can always be repaired. Considering what naruto pulled, I doubt we'd ever let the fan leave our hand at this point. Storing it away would just make it easier to be stolen.
I am looking forwards to more fan based abilities. Having both hands filled means we're more like samurai, barred out from traditional hand seal ninjutsu and throwing weapons.
It feels like if the fan is used for sound based illusions, at what point will it become a tool for charisma based illusions? To make us a lot more attractive and convincing. If the sound of tapping the blade can be used, what of the sound of opening the fan?
The way to mask our skill, we could go the show off ninja route, like the super pervert. Kinda. But a performer or something.
Than again, them knowing we did something. No one but us and our allies is gonna be able to tell what illusion we use or decipher which tone does what. It just has to work once to give us an opening.
Anyway, @Vesvius would it be possible to switch out the fan with a ring? It is after all the different frequencies created along the blade that make and break the jutsu, not the instrument used to tap it?
A Blending of styles
Description: During years of training with both blade and fist, you have at times struggled to meld the two styles in combat. This is a mark of the steps you've taken to correct that.
Effect: Gain a minor bonus in battle when using both kenjutsu and taijutsu.
I'm not entirely sure whether a perk like this is even any use or whether it's already covered by the skills in question, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. General idea is that it better allows him to combine both styles of combat when in a fight, instead of just using one or the other.
Regarding whether our sword is a katana or not. Tokei was a samurai and from what I can gather every samurai from the land of Iron use a katana, just look at Mifune.
There are characters in naruto that use the katana with two hands, Mifune does so on multiple occasions, Tobirama also I believe. When they need extra striking power. Every edge is needed in some battles. However it isn't a huge problem to fight with two weapons or to fight with a one-handed grip.
We do have super strenght, but every little bit helps. Naruto also uses the trope of pushing swords against one another to see who breaks first. In those scenes the combatants often use a two-handed grip.
The question we need to ask our self is what type of swordsman are we? Look at Killer B, he uses 7 swords at the same time, he will never have the pure striking power of Kisame, he forgoes that by giving his opponent 7 points of attack to split his focus. An Uchiha would therefore in theory be his best opponent. Do we want to use one or two swords? One sword and a tessen which gives us handy wind jutsu or have a free hand for one-handed hand seals thereby giving us more versatile ninjutsu and genjutsu..
You pause for a long moment. If you cut class now, you could get so much more work done then if you sat listening to Iruka-sensei give the same lessons for the fifth time. You're on a roll right now! If you keep working at Tone of Discord you might have it combat ready within a few days! And if you go to class, you might lose all the momentum you're building up.
But… well, you're shooting for the top of the class. And while it's never actually been said you're fairly certain attendance is part of your grade. You haven't missed a day yet- and if the days you skip give someone else a window to pass you, you'll be so pissed.
So you nod at Ino, slam your sword into its sheath with slightly more force than necessary, and jog out of the training ground. The road from the training ground to the actual academy is one well traveled and you follow it with sure, familiar footsteps. Fifteen minutes later the two of you make it to the academy gates.
You give Ino a look as you finish the long climb to the third floor and your classroom. Your breathing is even and smooth, the results of years of Taijutsu training from a complete madman. Ino's, by contrast, is rough. She's not bent over and gasping for air like a lot of people would be, but she's still breathing harder than she should be after a brisk jog up some stairs. "You need to work on your endurance," you answer.
Her reply is to stick her tongue out and pull down her eyelid at you. You shake your head. "Mature," you answer dryly as you push open the classroom door. "You sure told me."
You and Ino banter casually as you enter the room and make your way up the stairs to the third row and your usual seats. You drop down in front of your desk and Ino takes her usual seat next to you. "I don't mean anything by it," you continue. "But I think some extra conditioning would truly help you. It would not do to run out of stamina in the middle of a battle."
"If a fight's gone on long enough that I can't handle it then a little hard breathing is the least of my problems," she parries.
"But still a problem, and so still something that could hobble you. You know I'm right."
Ino rolls her eyes. "Sure, yeah, fine. You win. I'll start running laps immediately!"
You sigh, and your hand absently opens and closes your fan. You don't get a chance to say anything before Ino glances around and stops, eyes locking onto something right in front of you. "We'll continue this later," she says, a smile in her voice. "You've got a visitor right now."
Your shoulders slump. She's looking directly in front of you, slightly in front of your desk. That means that someone is currently standing on it. Again. Knowing your class, you have one of two choices. It could be Naruto, glaring at you from inches away. You doubt that however; he's probably going to take some more time after his 'prank' to lick his wounds. Which leaves…
You turn your head slightly and meet the gaze of a single red eye staring blinklessly at you from mere centimeters away. Yep. Just like you thought. You hold in your sigh and nod politely. "Good Morning Kairi."
Ever since you started at the Academy, Shirai Kairi has been a constant presence. The mildly spooky girl with her long white dress and waist-length black hair has just always seemed to be around. At first, she used to creep you out. It's a natural reaction; no one ever seems to hear her move after all, and one of her favorite pastimes is to appear on people's desks and loom. But years of exposure have mostly inured you to her sudden appearances.
Besides, you've probably spent more time with her than most. She likes to loom at you weekly while she spaces everyone else out. And she was also a scriptwriter for Theater Club, despite the fact that she really should have been in her Kunoichi lessons at the time. As such, you've acted out her work a bunch. She has had you killed so many times.
The shaggy head of the spook nods at you slightly, letting her hair brush your desk. "Morning 'suke," she replies, voice low and almost husky.
You wait for a long few moments, managing to keep a straight face despite the snickers you hear from the girl next to you. You reach out and punch Ino in the shoulder, bringing an end to them. But still Kairi stares. "Is there something I can help you with?" you ask.
"No thank you," is the response from the motionless girl. But without Ino laughing, your ears pick up a sound. A small scratching, like a nail being dragged over wood. Or a pencil being dragged over paper. Your stomach sinks and there's no stopping your sigh this time. "Kairi," you ask. "Are you drawing me again?"
Kairi's shoulder slump. "...no."
You meet the only eye you can see with a level look. "Kairi," is all you say.
"...yes."
"What have I said about drawing me without telling me?"
"...that you like it very much. It makes you feel like a model."
"Yep!" Ino cuts in through a gale of laughter. "That's exactly what he said!"
This time, it takes two fingers rapping against Ino's forehead to stop her laughter. "No," you correct. "What I said was that I don't like it at all. And that you should stop."
"...doesn't sound like you…"
Your fingers itch to take the notepad you know she has hidden behind her veil of hair, but you stop yourself. If you take it, that would mean that you would see what's on it. And the last time you looked at one of Kairi's drawings of you you had had to rinse out your eyes and sanitize your hands with a scouring pad.
Seriously. You had never needed to see what she wanted you and Sasuke to do. Never. But you may have to see it again; you can't let her keep drawing it. That'd mean that yet another horrible creation has been birthed into the world! It's your duty to-
Just then, Sakura arrives with Jabari, and Ino loses all interest in your confrontation with Kairi. It takes no time at all for the two to get into yet another shouting match that ends with you and Jabari being used as a wall. By the time you're able to return your attention to Kairi, she's gone, and you hear a few of the girls giggling over something in the back of class. Shit.
You glower at Sakura and Ino. This thing better fix itself soon.
***
This thing does not fix itself soon.
Sakura and Ino continue their fights for days. You, Jabari, and even Yui- when she's not laughing at the childishness of it all- try your best to play peacemaker to no avail. There is no hope for peace. Battle lines are being drawn, and the two are at war. You have to completely give up the games as a bad idea after the third one devolves into a catfight.
But every cloud has a silver lining. And the lining from the split in your friend group is that you have more time to devote to personal training. Since Ino apparently claimed you in the fight- you're pretty sure Sakura didn't even bother to contest it- she's your usual sparring partner and genjutsu dummy, and the two of you put all the time you're not in class into honing your personal abilities.
For her part, Ino makes great strides. After dealing with you nagging her about her cardio, she grudgingly starts working harder at it. But her growth there is minimal compared to how much she works at her ninjutsu. You've been Shintenshin'd so many times that you're scarily starting to get used to it, and she's even starting to make strides at Shinranshin at the same time.
You've been no easier on her. After weeks of constant work, you think you've got Tone of Discord down cold. You can hit the right note every time, and even start mixing up the effects. Vertigo is still your go-to effect, but now you can mix in nausea, some disorientation, and even a little emotional control. A touch of sadness, a bit of euphoria. Nothing extreme, but if you hit different notes in succession, well…
Daisuke used Confuse Ray. It was super effective.
Tone of Discord even makes it's triumphant debut during a class spar where everything is legal. You put down a very game Goro, a very bored Shikamaru, and a very confused Shino in quick succession while barely touching them. If that doesn't boost you up in the rankings, nothing will.
And as a bonus, all that work even gets you a few new fanfares in your ears!
YOU HAVE ATTAINED THE ACHIEVEMENT GENIN LEVEL'! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT!
YOU HAVE ATTAINED THE ACHIEVEMENT 'INDEPENDENT STUDY'! CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT!
The first doesn't seem to get you anything special. Just another title you can equip to no visible effect. Maybe it's one of those achievements where the real reward is the skills you boosted along the way?
Independent Study on the other hand gives you something fun. Nothing as interesting as Shape Manipulation or as spammable as your dummies, but fun nonetheless. You can scribe your techniques now- all it takes is a pot of ink, a blank scroll, and an hour of free time and you can write down a step by step instruction manual on how to use any of your techniques that you have at Intermediate or higher. You don't even have to really think about it; you just think 'I'm going to scribe a technique' and away your hands go. The only downside is that you're not entirely certain what you can use the resulting manuals for. Maybe you can sell them? Or donate them somewhere? Or maybe use them to boost up your allies? Whatever it is, you're sure you'll find it.
But you don't spend all your free time scribing techniques or even on your Genjutsu. It'd be irresponsible to do so- even if using Genjutsu feels right in ways that are only comparable to your sword. No, you have other projects to work on.
The second one you set your mind to is Tree Walking. You figure that between your solid Chakra Control and your frequent examples of people using the skill- Gai likes to stand upside down on things- that it should be a cinch. To your later surprise, it is. You get it down with a minimum of effort. It's nice when things are as easy as you think they should be.
With that taken care of you turn your attention to your math idea. This one takes a little bit more effort. Calculating all those distances and areas, not to mention estimating the effects of various kinds of traps and making certain they won't mess with each other's effects, is a bitch. But still, you get it done, and you make it look good during a survival exercise. Another one down.
It's when you start work on your history project that you start running into walls.
The walls start when Kiba drops down next to you at lunch, interrupting your conversation with Jabari, one of the few you've been able to have since your respective best friends declared war on each other. You turn to him and raise an eyebrow. "Yes?"
"Satomura," he greets you. "This thing's fucking impossible." He instantly turns and bows at Yui before she can strike. "And yes, I'm sorry for my language, Yui-hime. Here, as an apology, I'll let you pet Akamaru."
He pulls his dog out his jacket and hands it to your friend, an act which is met by a coo of, "Doggy!"
With Yui distracted Kiba turns back to you. "Seriously. Dude. Fucking impossible."
You stare back at him nonplussed. "You're going to have to be a little more specific about what's impossible."
"The shit you've got me researching," Kiba answers. "There's just too much stuff! I can't get it all! Besides, some parts of it don't make any sense when you compare it to other parts of it and then when you look at a third thing the first two make even less sense and…"
You hold up your hand to stop him short. You turn to Jabari, who's looking a little bewildered at Kiba's sudden ramble. "Kiba is helping me with a project," you explain. "I've asked him to help me research the Warring States era so that I can put together a presentation for history finals."
"And… why is he helping you exactly?"
You shrug. "He's got a crush on Mother." One she finds hilarious, you don't add. Saying that would probably impact the quality of help you're getting.
Kiba snorts. "I do not! I just… appreciate a good looking woman who-"
"Yes, I understand," you reply, cutting him off before he gets gross. Again. "I do as well. Which is why I'm penning a letter to Hana-chan right after we're done here. Tell me, Kiba, what fruits does your sister enjoy? I'd like to-"
"Okay, okay!" Kiba growls. "I get it!" He growls to himself for a moment and then finally gets back on topic. "Anyway. Dude. There's just too much. The Warring States era went on for like centuries! There's no way you can do a presentation on all of it!"
Huh. Kiba's probably not wrong. Doing a complete presentation on the entire era would be you essentially trying to cram over six hundred years of history into a brief period of time. The information would be so dense and garbled that no one would get anything out of it at all.
Then again, Kiba's not exactly the best helper. Convenient, sure. Booksmart, no. He says he's finding conflicting sources of information when he's looking. Maybe if you had another helper you could winnow the grain from the chaff and get better, more complete information that you could use to give an overview.
No matter what, one thing is clear. Your history project is going to take some work.
What do you do in regards to your history project?
[] Recruit another helper. You just want to do a general overview of the era and for that, you need more help finding better information.
-[] Who do you rope into helping you?
[] Kiba's right. You need to narrow your search. Instead of just researching the era, you'll focus on one specific thing.

Daisuke's first exposure to Lee involved the scratch of notes being taken and the feeling of eyes on him when he was training.
When Daisuke was practicing with Tone of Discord, he found one of the notes completely by accident.
Shirai Kairi is a kunoichi of many talents. She draws, she writes, she acts, but what she's the most proud of is that she's the shadow editor of the student paper.
In the final academy marking period before graduation, each prospective jonin-sensei writes a proposal to the Hokage that informs him what kind of team they would form if given the chance. Ordinarily, there are twenty or so on his desk. This time? Hundreds.
Every Sunday night, Ino's family has their close cousins the Yokota family over for dinner. These used to be pleasant, happy days. But since Ino and Mariko declared war upon each other... less so.
Satomura Manami does not get along well with many people. But to everyone's surprise, she has a best friend and it isn't who you'd think it would be.
Shinsato Ren. Ueda Arata. Takagai Haseo. Alone, their powers are negligible. But together they are the only ones who seek the truth that hides behind lies. They're not sheep! They don't believe all that 'official' story! They know the real secrets- and the truth would shock and horrify you all.
The fan is part of the character. There is no way that the fan would get destroyed or damaged. Even if it does it can always be repaired. Considering what naruto pulled, I doubt we'd ever let the fan leave our hand at this point. Storing it away would just make it easier to be stolen.
This feels hopelessly naive. Suppose we never got the fan back from Naruto, or we attacked him straight off? The fan could be lost or damaged for good. And even if we could repair it, it wouldn't be the same, heirloom fan.
It's a gift from our mother, a family heirloom. It is not a Ninja Tool, nor a weapon of war.
Subjecting it to the rigors of battle is not a good idea if we want to keep it undamaged and whole, the pristine and noble artifact that it is.
Do we want to use one or two swords? One sword and a tessen which gives us handy wind jutsu or have a free hand for one-handed hand seals thereby giving us more versatile ninjutsu and genjutsu..
You still kinda need a hand free to be able to use the seals, so Sword+Fan isn't a great combo. It has already been mentioned how the Tone of DIscord is a tad awkward given we've got to palm both at the same time as forming the seals.
Also, our fan isn't a Ninja Tool designed to handle channeling Wind Chakra. It'd be torn apart. We'd probably need to buy one from a merchant from Suna if we really want to go that route, and need to figure out how to form hand-seals while both our hands are occupied.
Not to mention, the fact that it's far better to use a sword with two-hands, so we probably shouldn't make using the tessen part of our combat style, just an occasional supplement so we can use our sword with two hands, and take one off to fire off hand-seals if need be. And if we do use a tessen in actual combat, it's certainly not going to be the fan our mother gave us.
Well, we should first check if Wood Release is even a possible perk to get. @Vesvius, would getting wood release as a perk be allowed, and if so, what would be the price?
Anyway, @Vesvius would it be possible to switch out the fan with a ring? It is after all the different frequencies created along the blade that make and break the jutsu, not the instrument used to tap it?
Not at this time. Once the technique is mastered, possibly. But right now Dai is training himself to use very specific notes for very specific things. Changing the item he's using to make the note changes the note. Later on he won't be so dependent, but right now he's using the fan.

Most of them use shorter swords since they can expand the edge with chakra.
Anyway the obvious answer in order to keep the sword out of the sound based genjutsu is to get a xylophone chest piece and keep a mallet in his other hand
Regarding the history project:
I think we need to focus on something. Maybe the time period 20 years pre Konoha until founding?
[] Recruit another helper. You just want to do a general overview of the era and for that, you need more help finding better information.
-[] Who do you rope into helping you?
Another clan kid feels like it'd work best. I'm half tempted to rope in Sasuke, or if we want pure book smarts Shino might be a better idea. Though, both hinge on them actually accepting.
EDIT: Front page just updated with the new rankings. Neither Sasuke nor Shino are likely to want to help us.
We are incredibly gifted in all fields so far, so it would make sense to keep this door open.
And it just sounds supremely badass for Daisuke to mix in precise and deadly nin- and gen-jutsu with one-handed seals while holding a badass sword.
Thousand Flying Water Needles of Death
Haku gathers water from the air and surrounding environment to form them into a multitude of long needles. He then directs them to a specific target at high speed
Water Release: Water Severing Wave
After kneading chakra in the stomach and converting it into water, the user spews it out as a high pressure stream that is powerful enough to cut cleanly through the roots of the God Tree with ease.
Water Release: Rising Water Slicer
The user releases a linear wave of water that travels at high speeds to attack the target. It is strong enough to slice clean through rock
Whenever the vote will be, I'm going to vote Water-Release and I'll fight anybody who doesn't.
What do you do in regards to your history project?
[X] Kiba's right. You need to narrow your search. Instead of just researching the era, you'll focus on one specific thing.
-[X] The end of an era; important figures, before and after changes and so on. Mix in some Konoha-propaganda
[x] Recruit another helper. You just want to do a general overview of the era and for that, you need more help finding better information.
-[x] Sakura
If there's anyone else who could help us parse through all this stuff, it'd be the biggest nerd in class. Damn their feud, she's the most effective here.
[X] Kiba's right. You need to narrow your search. Instead of just researching the era, you'll focus on one specific thing.
-[X] Map of clan territories 5-10 years before hidden village establishment and descriptions of their relationships.
I doubt one more person will solve us the problem of going through probably years maybe decades worth of information in less than 3 months.
