It was during the duel, the commander had a pistol.

I remember that, but he didn't really seem phased by it (compared to the hole in his side) so I was a little supirsed why Hawkwoman kept bringing it up.

I guess his head was the only visible part of his body? Though it begs the question of "How Hawkwoman knew what he was shot in the head with"
Unless the weapon left some obvious traces on his face or something, but that ties back to the whole "didn't really seem hurt by it" thing. I'm guessing he doesn't have a hole in his face.

When was it said that he got the heart?

Is Paul the new Orange Entity now, or something? Or maybe they just bonded more evenly, after he accepted all of his desires?
She gave him her heart.

Please tell me that is not literal. I really do not want to find out what carving runes to make finding the heart of avarice harder into it while it pretends to be his soul will do.
You may want to stop reading then.

But are you saying he doesn't have the Ophidian's heart where a soul would be?

We know he has something from the Ophidian stuck there, but if you weren't being literal, I'd appreciate the clarification.
The first set of tattoos allowed him to develop a metaphysique. When the heart got plugged in... The best metaphor I can think of is Pokemon. Imagine that -having completed Pokemon Blue, you bought Pokemon Red so you could get the remaining Pokemon. Imagine that -to speed up the process- you transferred a level 100 Articuno across to the new game. It's not that Bulbasaur isn't there, it's just that you're hardly ever going to notice next to the level 100 Articuno.

Also, every so often the "heartbeat" shows up when he does something especially intense with the Orange Light.

I plot-to-rapid-fly behind Stewart and am immediately forced to reinforce my armour as he surrounds me with a swarm of green construct blades. I try sending a filament at him but it gets severed almost immediately. Right, the stupid way. I form a standard broad construct connection and fire it at him just as hard as I can, wanting

it through as hard as I can. Some sort of grinder construct forms around it, teeth spinning, but I'm able to reinforce it and push it up to his shield while maintaining my own FTL-jammer to prevent him from backing off. He creates clamps around my armour and shoves, spinning us both around the room. The ring keeps my inner ears from disorientating me and I try to keep my eyes on him. I make contact with his bubble shield

and infect the area I touch with orange light. He slams me into the wall as I finally force a filament through his defence and slap a cure-tech wafer onto the left side of his neck. He jerks as it makes contact and fades into his skin, constructs fading around him.

<snip>

Ring, assimilate! An orange beam flashes out from the ring only for Klarion to catch it with his right hand and pull-

Warning! Power drain-

I cut the power and the light in his hand fades away.

-detected.

He grabs at me with his left. I evade, then he turns his left palm towards me. "Remember this?" Grey dust swirls towards me and encrusts on my construct armour

before exploding off and vaporising. With a snarl, Klarion blurs and ooof! Sends me hurtling across the room!
For pretty clear evidence of how much difference it makes, Grayven tried for most of the duration of the mind-controlled JL fight to usurp Stewart's ring, and didn't manage to do so before the fight was over. OL on the other hand:

Aah! Why wasn't Guy allowed to transfer me a copy of his star charts! What did the blood.. dy… I look at Stewart's ring. I could try asking nicely… No, can't afford further delays. My team needs me too much.

baBUM

I grab it with my left hand and press it up against its orange counterpart. Ring, assimilate.

baBUM

Usurpation in progress. Orange light flares from my closed hand. Usurpation complete. Combined charge at one hundred forty seven percent normal maximum. Do you wish to merge databases?

@Mr Zoat, just caught two typos in the new Story Only thread snippets you posted:

I've no way to know whether or not it'll actually do anything, but Mister Nelson did say that not having a soul shouldn't effect my constructs.
"affect", I think.

"empty"

Edit: And another in the next post.

He hold the shaft and points the metal at me.
"holds"

Interesting, though it confuses me even further on how soul works. How can the Ophidian give him her heart what are the exact effects on him and her? At first I thought the orange quotation marks where due to being enlightened in the way of avarice, but after John got some green ones I'm reconsidering. Also does the pokemon comparaison mean he could have more than one?

Wait was it an nth metal blaster that he was shot in the head with?

If so it would certainly explain the strange feeling, the disruption effect likely disrupted whatever weird shit the ring and fatherbox was doing to his brain.

Was it ever stated outright? At the least, I don't think it's true for this story based on what we know of ophidian's history.

Yes.

okay i just read the thing with the muse and I am on page 60. can i just say, as a greek mythology nerd, it is amusing how eloquent everyone is being with their anger at calliope's treatment

Demigod= problem with Ring Based healing as proven with Grayven.

Other options?
He might be able to get past that problem. He has a similar problem with divinely empowered types like Teth Adom; reshaping Adom's new body into one that resembled his old ate most of a ring change according to Mr Zoat, but it was doable. With two fully charged rings and the Ophidian's heart as a supercharger he might be able to power his way past something like that where Grayven couldn't. Especially since one of Greyven's divine specialties is durability; Orpheus was a musician, not a brick.
