Cities need to be fed, mate. And spreading out laterally to do farming to feed the cities, rather than going full vertical farming, is so much cheaper that they'd just end up doing that.

And anyways, all those anarcho-primitivist communes just don't want to admit that the only way to get their charming littlei deas about how to run the world to work would be to kill off humanity until there's about 1.5 to 2 billion left, spread out over the world instead of concentrated.

The really massive environmental damage is a product of the industrial era and onwards.

Of course, the same era is also responsible for what I consider all the good things in life so the anarcho-primitivists can suck it :V
Yes, but the more consolidated the population is, the less food is lost in the proccess of bringing it to the people. The entire human population could fit inside Texas with a population density of LA, and would have plenty of state to spare with a density of Tokyo or New York. Then you'd just need to have farming 'colonies,' which would still have less of an ecological impact than our current methods.

"Thinking like that is why you're living in a primitivist commune rather than doing anything useful with your life."

She turns on me. "This is how people are supposed to live. Working together, knowing each other. In balance with the Earth."

"Yeah. I cleansed the sea of Human refuse. I refroze the North Pole. You did some gardening and smoked some weed." I shake my head. "I'll let you know how it goes. Ring, transition."
"let me know when you get thanked personally by Gaea"

"Ley lines are artificial. Ancient male druids used them to force natural energy into straight lines..."
Huh. Why male druids, I wonder?
It sounded to me suspiciously like she was leading into one of those radical feminist arguments that claim that anything long and thin is a phallic symbol and a tool of the patriarchy. I suspect that she doesn't actually know who did it or why.

Paul has been unusually bitchy today, I wonder why.
These people push his buttons. Plus they aren't villains, so he expresses his disagreement with them by being bitchy rather than with railgun fire.

Modern megafarming is incredibly efficient compared to pre-mechanization farming methods.
Yes, and it's expensive, and requires an enormous logistical trail of machinery and chemicals that, in turn, each cause environmental damage. The interdependence of modern systems, and the waste that accumulates at each of its many steps in the process, is what makes the primitivist go "aaaah poor mother earth ;__;".

And even then, it's not a question of efficiency, but cost - massive vertical farming confined to city areas, if we were to have cities and no rural life, would be a lot more expensive to set up and operate than simply spreadign the same surface area out on the land, which is why we're doing that instead of having massive farming towers.

Thirdly, there's the whole rose-coloured glasses thing that makes them think that yes, ruralization and going back to subsistence farming will somehow work out. Without, you know, killing humanity down to about a 1.5 billion level.

Oh please. 99% of the population don't do anything meaningful with their lives. (Myself included, of course.)

As long as you have a job and put something back into society (or are preparing for the aforesaid job), it is something, it might not be much, but it is something, even if it is working in a fast food restaurant.

Someone has to cook/ serve food, drive buses, collect trash, maintain the sewers, ect. for this world of ours to work.

There are very few non essential positions in our world. They may be replaceable, but they are essential.

I don't doubt that this happened, but I don't remember it. What went on there?
Swamp Thing showed up, grabbed her and depowered her.

EDIT: Here's the scene.

"Oh. Oh, mighty..."

Swamp Thing's head reorientates on Isley immediately and she trails off.

"You."

The tangle of vines making up his head move a little, becoming a bit more face-like. She starts to look a little nervous.

"Y-yes? I am Poison Ivy, and I-"

His right arm raises a little, then shoots down and grabs her before hauling her up to the level of his face. The arm itself is thin and bends in an inverted U shape to do this and I've got no idea how it's got any strength to it.

"Your.. voice. Always.. on the edge of hearing. Whining, screeching, demanding voice! Be.. silenced."

The flowers start to wrap around her.

"No! Wait! What have I done?! I only wanted-"

"The Green is... not your playground. We care not for your causes, your pettiness."

He brings his left arm around and clasps his second flower cluster around the first. Oh heck, he isn't going to kill her, is he?

"By command of the... Parliament of Trees... I cast you out."

He retracts his left arm and lowers his right to the ground, dropping Isley into the mud. Alright, what was that ab-

Oh.

Isley's hair is now brown. Her skin, which had been pale green, is now a more normal Caucasian flesh tone. She lies in the mud, her knees drawn up to her chest with her arms around then. She's shaking, staring blankly in front of her.

She's been cut off.

Swamp Thing acting as a representative of Gaea cut her off. ST was there to meet Paul, who was dealing with... I forget the group of villain's name but, Black Adam and Joker were there.

ST claimed Pamela was whining and screeching in his/Gaia's ears, and de-powered her to shut her up.

Its been a while so I could be wrong.

The injustice league. And I think Ivy actually contacted swamp thing herself after Paul told her where he was.

Heh, ugh now I'm reminded of Insurrection. "Oh no we believe when you use a machine you take something away from the man." Yeah that's why you all look so clean and have machine woven clothes, and irrigation and can somehow fix a positronic brain AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
To be fair, he feels hatred for them, not contempt.

"Potential wasted. Languishing away in a corner of the world. "

Also she said OL wont be able to do it.

OL.

I don't see it that way (Though I appreciate hearing your perspective).

Being a net positive is a rare thing. One could argue that scientific progress (And all the work that goes into maintaining a society where scientific progress can be made) indicates that all the work we do isn't meaningless, but I'd counter that humans still feel roughly as much emotional fulfilment now as we did a hundred years ago.

Personally? I'm a net negative. This isn't because I've done anything overly bad, because I haven't, but because I haven't made up for the resources I've consumed.

Edit: By this I don't mean I'm a slouch. I live a clean life and am successful in school. What I'm saying is that I don't believe my contributions will ever surpass the great amount of limited resources (Metals, natural gases, et cetera) I have consumed as a resident of a first world country.
