Not really. On a tech level, The Culture actually aren't too far ahead of Star Trek and the seen DC universe. The threat difference between the three can mostly be put down to infrastructure. It's an exponential growth curve, and The Culture is way out ahead. In any sort of an even fight, the largest advantage will be a mind's ability to think much faster than Paul.

Huh. Very different vibe between OL and Bierce.
The gulf in sheer power is similar to that between OL and Constantine at the beginning, but you got the vibe that they were peers, even when they weren't yet friends. John is a firm adherent to the Never Let Them See You Sweat doctrine even at the worst of times.
Here, there's a very definite vibe of CEO and contractor. Or possibly more Dark Lord and prospective recruit. And Ambrose certainly feels overwhelmed.
Of course, can't exactly blame the man for being a little initimidated.
OL teleports him to his heavily armed flying ice fortress at the South Pole, namedrops Russian snoopers, summons multiple Praexis demon minions as lookouts, displays dedicated magekilling weapons, and doesn't even quibble at his initial price request; 10k cash is small enough, but a complete set of basic Atlantean magic texts and OL's contact number is worth at least 10x that easily. Each.
Normal recommendation would be to take the money and run, but given how OL found him in the middle of nowhere, he doesn't have many options
He should.....probably take the magic contractor along. Just in case.
