Thinking about orbital defenses, I think we should update the Caltrop to drop the light shield for Improved stealth before we build too many more. The improved stealth will keep the station completely hidden up to Long weapons range, which is the ideal target bracket for the lance. This will let them be caltrops in truth, lurking in the darkness until they can stab into someone's foot / sensor array / etc.

The price for the caltrop would stay the same and the switch over would cost 10 RP.

Edit: This gave me the idea to redesign the Flame into a stealth based Torpedo frigate.

Hm. Yeah, I can see the logic. Sometimes the point is to be seen so that a fight isn't started at all, but we haven't really used caltrops that way so far.

I mean, we kinda tried to when we left Denva in case some more stealth raiders showed up if I remember right? Not sure if that actually did any good, though.

Sometime down the line, perhaps we get that follow-on tech from low emissions systems that lets us hide the source of weapons fire. Fields of caltrops with that tech would be pretty funny imo.

I think we shouldn't build or design Caltrops of any variation. If Denva wants to churn defense platforms they can, but they're a poor use of our resources.

Sneaky defense platforms have a nice sound, but I don't think they're anywhere near cheap enough for what they could do unless the enemy blunders deep into their network before taking fire.
 
I'm holding out hope that we'll be able to retain some degree of control over the Aetherion Industrial Complex after we head out to continue exploring, whether that's just leaving it in the hands of the up and coming Cogitare, building a new Stone Person to run it, or developing good enough warp comms to retain control.

So static defenses could be useful for that, but I agree we're unlikely to be using them much "in the field".

See, that's one of the things I want Warp Comms for, is so we can operate things remotely. We could have that by now if we'd started working on it when I first proposed. Or, if we started working on that now, we could have it in three turns.
 
Hm. Yeah, I just... kinda fundamentally disagree on the conclusions here, because the bots aren't there to be security forces, that's an extra. They're there to be a massive number of mobile sensors, a compromise choice because I couldn't make using drones instead work. For the purpose of counterinsurgency, their utility as combatants is just window dressing.

It's all about having so many sensors on the ground that wherever we will it, not even individual cultists isolated from their cell can escape notice. I only even kept them humanized because I want them to still be useful as combatants in future turns, what with us having a quarter hundred thousand of the things.

But enough about the bots, since I now know that's a side show.

The research and how it forwards longer term and "before we leave denva" goals I've discussed earlier - I see it as taking steps towards a high-prep execution of the demonology (that is, we'll be ready to do it in full safety next turn), getting trade good-ready shields in a hurry so if friendly visitors happen we can build strong and ongoing ties to us and Denva immediately, getting personal psy shields for our crew and staff, and taking a flying leap towards our next generation forces of which the seeker is just a preview.

Something I don't think I've brought up, but factored a good bit into my thinking - I strongly suspect that any unit with both psy shields and machine spirit design modifiers will get the machine spirit controlled psy shields tech.

This is notable because those shields are better in "every way but cost", and "as a sensor" is very definitely a way-that-is-not-cost. This factors into Denva's rebuild choices, in which cases they would design infrastructure with machine spirits embedded to take advantage of that and reap the improved shields.

But by extension, that may also benefit the designs we'll get back - below abstraction and otherwise - which to start with is pretty convenient, but is especially notable for their purpose as trade goods because Machine Spirits do a bang-up job at giving technology tamper resistance.

Suffice to say, the potential to make export goods that will tell the buyer to piss off if they try to fuck with or take apart the psy shield is a very good thing.
I would think getting more of their stuff set up would create more ties than doing a very, very thorough job of helping with one thing. And as for the bots being sensors, they won't provide much coverage over a planet. They won't provide much coverage over a city. Not compared to the total urban area, and not compared to what Denva can do by issuing little shields to their troopers.

What we can do to help is get the techs, design things (like the satelites), launch satelites (they're most likely much more gated on VBP than ground BP), and provide comms, control, and aid.

As for the bots getting MS shields, that seems to me to go against it being "the cheapest shield available".

In terms of Demonology, I don't think any benefit from having the integrated shields tech or even machine spirit resist will be very relevant to Demonology, unless we're rebuilding the Oubliette or the warp lab shields. Especially since delaying a turn will let Bongo charge up.

Funny enough, that was me too, the Planetary Transit System. Mix of vacuum Maglev networks, supersonic civilian flights, robust commuter systems, all divided into Continental Districts for administrative management. Would have been glorious. *Sigh*

If we're planning crazy megastructures, Vothryn has a bunch of rapidly emptying stations that can be converted into discounted Machine Spirit Deep Space Manufactories, and a couple of gas giants no one is using that could be nice spots to stick a couple of Deep Well Industrial Zones, and a star that could host an array to direct Nicoll-Dyson Beams at anyone who comes to mess with us.

It might take a while to get there, but we could point enough energy at anyone with static population centers that the only people who could survive becoming our enemy would be the bloody Eldar.
