VII Queens

The quest will be back in 2020. The beginning of January. Unfortunately I don't have much time right now.

The Story Thus Far

Hello I know it's way past 2020. Sorry about that. I'm here again hoping to finish this quest. It's been awhile so here's a quick recap, before we moved to the tail end of this quest.

Our protagonist, Nys, was on her way home one night and was attacked by a monster. The monster turns out to be a Void. A collection of consciousness that have a hive like structure. Where they came from and how they came to be is unknown.

Fortunately, she is saved by a strange doll named Liri. The doll with rabbit ears tells her she is a queen (magical girl) and that destroying the Voids is her job.

Nys doesn't believe it at first, but eventually transforms into her Noble Armor, while being attacked. The Void escapes and Nys with Liri tracks it down to Lueryn Park. There they meet Hyacinth a student at Nys' university.

Nys takes out the void only to learn there are people inside them. They are prisoners fully aware of the horrifying monsters they've become. How they got there and why is unknown.

Afterwards, Nys befriends Hyacinth and eventually a void attacks the girl. Liri informs Nys that Voids attack people in despair and are after queens and their families.

Nys also learns that the world they live in is fake. Liri doesn't elaborate and Nys doesn't ask.

During this ordeal Hyacinth unlocks her own Noble Armor and joins Nys. This is also where they meet Lei. Lei is a odd void that is not monstrous. She seems to be completely in control of herself.

After a short conversation, where Nys implies she would kill the voids if she had no other choice, Lei proceeds to impale Nys.

After that mistake, Nys is incapacitated. Hyacinth ends up taking out the void and healing Nys.

Sometime later Nys tells Nem, her brother, that she is a queen. Nem tells her he was aware of her and the void then tells her to be careful.

Later, Nys meets up with Cara, Hyacinth's bully. Cara also has two personalities, the other is known as Eone. Cara asked Nys for help finding her friend. They make a deal then the two head to a secret garden in the university. There Nys finds a birdcage with an exact replica of her weapon.

She is unable to learn more about it due to the arrival of Eurytia. Eurytia, also a queen but she is different due to being aware of her past memories. She's not keen on sharing how on why, but definitely decided she'll kill Nys if she tried to harm Ren. Since she never "slept" she suffers from a lack of emotions. Nys currently doesn't know what sleeping means at this point.

Ren is a former student of Luxarc University, who was murdered by Ai. Ai is Hyacinth's older sister, she is also a queen. Her reasoning behind killing Ren is that she felt threatened by him.

Nys uses her Last Gift, an art giving to her by a mysterious woman, and she was able to free Ren. Except the cost to Nys was significant. Losing a piece of herself she panics.

Days later after she is back to a semi-normal stated, Nys visits Eone and meets with Eurytia. During their conversation, Nys learns that Eone's second personality is due to improperly awakening. Eurytia tells her that Liri must be the one who wakes them.

From there she learns that Eurytia broke Cara's memories of the true events to stop her rampage. But Cara still has an intense hate of Ai even without knowing the truth.

Liri later explains he's gathering the queens together for some unknown reason. Leaving Nys with the task of having Cara and Ai join the team.

Nys is now in charge of a team. Let's hope she can hold it together until the end.

That concludes the story so far. Next arc, The Black Tides will being soon if anyone is still interested in this quest. The votes for the scenes and information from the last arc will be added in later.

Character profiles have been updated and now feature some new art for some characters and profiles for Ren and Mine.

Mechanics? Well I got way too into that so now let's just do an interactive story with some affinity points to add a few perks. Stats now are just to show who's stronger in case you need to create teams for future fights. That'll be explained later. The stats will continue to change but don't worry about exp.

Hopefully this quest finds some interest and I can finish it. Sorry for the long wait.

Welcome back.
I was wondering whether you chose a new format when I saw https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/43197/vii-queens.

Thank you. I was going to include it in the Thus Far that it was on RR but then took it out because I didn't think anyone would find it. Guess I was wrong.

I always wanted VIIQ as a story so I posted there with some small differences but I always intended to come back and finish the quest.

I think it got too complicated because I had too many ideas and not enough time in irl. Now I'm going to work at keeping it simple.

I sympathize with that.

The bane of all the creative.
Getting a good idea, adding to that idea and then adding this other really neat idea only to end up with an idea too complex to work.

She's not keen on sharing how on why
or

Still here. I remember this story fondly as a drama with a small circle of interconnected characters who knew each other from their past lives. I also remember it as one where characters knew a lot more than the readers, and weren't shy of having it show, making the plot complicated to follow at times, and not always for good reasons. They are constantly making references to things we can only try to intuit from context, and have a strange penchant for avoiding names and using same pronouns to refer to different people (since they are all queens). :D

Even the summary of the story doesn't avoid confusion as I had to reread the updates to remember what this part refers to:
She's not keen on sharing how on why, but definitely decided she'll kill Nys if she tried to harm Ren. Since she never "slept" she suffers from a lack of emotions. Nys currently doesn't know what sleeping means at this point.

Ren is a former student of Luxarc University, who was murdered by Ai. Ai is Hyacinth's older sister, she is also a queen. Her reasoning behind killing Ren is that she felt threatened by him.

Nys uses her Last Gift, an art giving to her by a mysterious woman, and she was able to free Ren.
Who is Ren, why is he important, why would we ever try to harm him (isn't he dead already?), and what did we free him from?

But despite some frustrations with narration I find myself intrigued about the backstory and the deeper plot going on. What happened back in Vahnaine, what is up with this world, what were we awoken to do, who are our allies and enemies? I have a soft spot for "complicated relationships that persist through different reincarnations", and I like how tight the cast is and what's been done with them so far.

Never cared for the mechanics, though.

I am surprised to hear the quest is about to reach its final arc; we just barely started on the big mysteries.

Thank you. I also like complicated relationships. Sorry about the confusion. I'll be trying to work on that as well.

As for Ren, at the end his core ends up with Eone.

Eone came over and held her hand out. "Let me, he is my knight. I should fix the orb before he loses his true self."

So he is still alive. I'll add to his profile that he's Eone's knight. He was freed from the Void or purified.

There's still a lot to go, but only three queens left to recruit. So kinda of close to the end but not really. Since mechanics are out the window I'll try to focus more on making things less complicated.

Seaside Vacation
Nys opened her eyes, morning had come. With the last month being quiet she found some semblance of balance. Still, something was missing. She couldn't explain, but the feeling was constant. Nagging.

Nem only wanted to know if she was okay after what happened. She put on a brave face and lied. Liri, on the other hand, had become more mysterious and left a week ago.

She didn't necessarily mind his absence. She had been taking on smaller voids for a month. Working with Hyacinth and Eurytia was a breeze, though the silver-haired woman was disconcerting. Nys was surprised at how well Hyacinth and Eurytia got along.

Liri had awakened Cara before he left, so Eone and Cara were no longer split. Yet, Hyacinth was still very wary of Cara. The two walked on eggshells with each other. Nys decided to patrol with Cara and Eurytia or Hyacinth and Eurytia. It was easier that way.

She knew she couldn't force a good relationship between the two of them. So working separately was for the best, at the moment. Sitting up Nys turned her alarm clock off. She'd taken her mid-terms and now it was time for her autumn break.

Which should have been exciting but at this point Nys was just tired. The only silver lining she had was that the smaller Voids didn't take anything from her. Her empty feeling was the same and the voids she purified didn't share their memories with her. So she felt she probably got used to the empty feeling, at least a little.

"Hooray..." she deadpanned as she got up.

Today was the first day of their trip. The school trip to Aquai Town was the most anticipated vacation destination of the year. Nys only hoped it would be quiet. No Voids would be nice.

"Nys are you up?" Nem called as he walked past her door. "Hurry so I can drop you off. Do you have enough money?"

"I'm up. I'm up!" She said grabbing her clothes and tossing them on the bed. She had packed the night before. "Could you loan me a little money? Just until I find another job."

The Sleepless Sheep burned down mysteriously two weeks ago. No one knew what happened. The owner disappeared as well. So everyone thought it was insurance-related. Nys wasn't sure it was.

"You don't have to pay me back just have a good time," Nem said.

"Okay," She said popping out of her room and headed to the bathroom.

Nem wasn't as busy lately. Nys wanted to ask but decided not to pry. She was just happy he was home more often than not.

------

"You're late," Moira said fixing her lipstick using a compact.

"Sorry, I may have overslept," Nys said.

"Call me when you get there," Nem said taking out her luggage. "Be careful driving Moira."

The woman stood up straight from leaning on her car. "I promise."

Nem gave a nod and patted Nys on the head then left.

"He seems different," Moira said staring after the car.

"Really?" Nys asked not seeing a difference at all. "Maybe because you haven't seen him in a while."

Moira turned her attention to Nys and Nys shrugged.

"I'm here, I'm sorry I'm late," Hyacinth said jumping out of the limo that just pulled up. Her butler got out and pulled her bags out to packing them away into Moira's car.

"It's fine, Nys is never on time anyway."

"Hey!" Nys exclaimed.

"Am I wrong?"

Nys rolled her eyes without saying a word and Moira patted her head. Hyacinth looked between the two and smiled.

"We should be off," Moira said getting into the sleek crimson car. Nys got in the back.

"Hyacinth you ride in the front. I'm taking a nap." She said already buckling her seat belt. The younger girl got in.

"Let's go," Moira said pulling off.

As they drove toward Aquai Town, Nys thought about the night Liri left.

--------

"Will it always be like this?" Nys asked the doll. She stared up at the ceiling in her room.

Liri sat on the edge of her pillow staring out the window. The moon was huge and the light was intense. It was an eerie moon.

"You made the choice." Liri's voice was almost inaudible.

"Are you angry with me?" Nys asked turning her attention to the doll.

His huge red eyes rested on her now. In the dark, they glowed a neon red. "Why should I waste my anger on something like you."

"Why are you so mean to me!" She turned over pulling her duvet over her shoulder. She wouldn't talk to him anymore if he continued.

The doll didn't speak for a long time but finally said, "because you do unnecessary things. They should all die. After so long it's better to just die."

Nys sat up abruptly. "Why! They're hurting and I can save them. Why should I let them die? Why should I be the one to kill them? She said they were my subjects. Is that true? You said something about it before."

Liri sighed, "She?"

"The voice. The one that gave me my sacred art." Nys explained.

"..." Liri didn't answer for a long minute before he spoke, "Yes they are."

"Then why would I kill them. I don't understand you. Have you always been this heartless?" She asked.

Have you always been this cruel... heartless?

Nys grabbed her head hearing a echoing voice in her mind. She knew that voice. It was the voice from the throne room.

No... it was different.

Nys said those words before. It was the same back then. She had asked him this question a long time ago. Before Celestria, before sleeping, before everything.

"I don't...I don't understand?" Nys managed to speak through the sharp pain in her head. She was confused and Liri didn't move to even check on her.

"Your determination to save the lost will destroy you and I'm supposed to just watch. You have a greater purpose than this. If you waste your life saving them, what will happen to that purpose?" Liri asked.

The pain ebbed off and Nys ignored what happened in favor of responding to the doll.

"You never explain anything but want me to trust you. That's not how things work Liri. If you can't trust me with the truth then—" before she could finish the sky lit up and for the briefest second Nys could hear the voice of countless Voids.

All speaking the same words. It was a command, "The mirror exists. Find it."

"So soon," Liri whispered. His usual expressionless face now showing concern.

"What's happening?" Nys asked. Her attention on the slowly dying light.

"I have to go. I need to find it. I'll come back soon, just stay out of trouble until then." And with those words, the doll disappeared.

---------

Turning her attention to the road Nys sighed inwardly. Liri bailed out of their conversation so easily without even giving her a proper answer. Still, she had yet to talk with Ai or Hyacinth. Nys felt that if Hyacinth found out her sister was a queen she would feel inferior again.

Plus, Ai had killed Ren. There was no way Hyacinth was going to accept that. If she did then there was no way Eurytia, Cara, or Ren would.

There was a rift in her group and she hadn't even successfully formed it yet. Everything seemed to rest on if she could get everyone to work together, but for what reason. Liri still had yet to explain and avoided doing so.

The ocean was getting closer.

Having fun was her goal for the week. She even felt better than she had since she cleansed Ren and truthfully she didn't want to waste her vacation on Voids.

Nys looked at Moira who was singing whatever song was on the radio. She'd have to keep an eye on her. Moira was the only normal person and the voids would probably try to attack her first.

"Are you okay?" Moira asked glancing at the rearview mirror.

"Yes, just wondering where's the next rest stop." She asked.

"Nys, I'm not stopping this car," Moira said adamant.

"Well say goodbye to these nice leather seats."

---------

The smell of the sea had always been refreshing to her. A home away from home except it wasn't anymore. The dark-haired woman stared at the ocean before her.

The edges of the water were black. No one seemed to notice but she could see it. The black edges sloshing around as the tide came in. The gentle movement was hypnotic. It was luring her closer, yet she was aware of the deceiving calm.

"Detective Tau, the specialist is here." The woman looked over to the blond getting out of his car. He was tall and built strong with violet eyes that bordered on being unnatural.

As he walked over to her she could swear she heard the sea speaking. Incoherent words flowed out full of something...fear?

"Detective Lumilla, I'm Mine Tau your partner for this case." she met up with him and held her hand out. He shook her hand and looked over at the crime scene.

"Nice to meet you, tell me about the victim." He said making his way down to the body not bothering with any more niceties.

Mine followed the man. She had heard a lot about Nem Lumillia. He had solved some very well-known cases in Celestria. It was a serious case for him to be loaned to Aquai.

Mine was sure her chief thought she would need help and she agreed. The case had become too strange even for her.

Taking a deep breath she went over to the victim. "The young man was found today an hour ago. He's the fourth in the past week. We still haven't figured how to move the body. It seems like he's encased in salt. Buried under the sand as well. So far we're unaware how deep it goes, they're still excavating him ."

Nem stared down at the broken form of the young man that was half-buried by sand and half encased in salt. Mine watched, she had always been fascinated by the man. He never took credit for his work on cases but everyone always knew who solved certain cases. It was one of those worst-kept secret scenarios.

"Work on preserving the body as much as possible for the family's sake. We'll speak with the family once we confirm his identity. Try to work faster before the tide comes in further."

Mine nodded and Nem looked back at the body, a pensive look on his face. Nem turned abruptly and headed back to his car. "I'll meet you at the precinct."

Mine watched him go not sure what she thought about the man. She glanced back at the black water and as she turned to leave she noticed Nem had stopped and his gaze was on the ocean. She wondered if he saw it. The strange inky edges of the water.

--------

Nys woke with a start. There was a sound. It had been loud and shrill. She looked over to Moira. The woman was still sound asleep next to her. Hyacinth was on the other bed asleep as well.

She wondered if she imagined the sound. She laid there quietly for what felt like an hour waiting for the sound to happen again.

Nothing.

The hotel room remained quiet but Nys felt suspicious and curious about the sound. She was positive that she had heard something.

-------

Should Nys investigate the sound? Pick One:

[] Yes, it might be something important.

[] No, it was probably her imagination.

[] Wake Moira up and ask her if she heard something.

[] Wake Hyacinth up and ask her if she sensed anything.

[] Write-in

Voting ends Saturday.

Current Circumstances, Moods, etc...
------

*Liri has left the party. Hyacinth and Moira have joined the party.

*Nys is watching over Moira closely. She's the most vulnerable.

*Nem is also in Aquai Town for work-related reasons. Nys is unaware of this.

*Nys can now contact Eurytia or Cara when she needs to. Just add it to any choice you pick. You can ask a question or ask one to join the party. **Sometimes they both might come join the party.

(Ex: [O] Nys should do a dance. (Contact Eurytia and ask a question, or ask her to join the party))

*Mine's character profile is up.

Waking somebody up to ask whether they heard something doesn't seem to be the best the best thing to do. At the same time I would like to wake Moira up, I haven't reread everything yet, but from what I remember she is still in the dark about what is going on.
And I want Nys' start down the road of recruiting Nys' best friend, because she is her best friend.

I'm withholding my vote for now to see if somebody would come with a write-in or if somebody has any better arguments.

Liri, on the other hand, had become more mysterious and a week before her trip left.
See, this is one of the things that make the quest confusing to read. Once my eyes reached that, I searched my memories about a trip, and came up with a blank. Trip, what trip? What was I missing again?

The trip is not mentioned until five paragraphs later. It would probably work better if you said he left a week ago without referring to the trip until it was actually relevant.
The Sleepless Sheep burned down mysteriously two weeks ago. No one knew what happened. The owner disappeared as well. So everyone thought it was insurance-related. Nys wasn't sure it was.
I forgot... was this Ai's workplace? What does Nys suspect?

I like the dynamics between Liri and Nys, and how frustrating it is to the both parties. Liri cares too much about Nys and not enough about what she feels... or is it just the purpose he is devoted to? But then, why does he not tell us anything? Eurytia also knows something we don't, and she also keeps mum. They better have a good reason for this secrecy!

Her empty feeling was the same and the voids she purified didn't they share their memories with her. So she felt she probably got use[d] to the empty feeling, at least a little.
"I'm here, I'm sorry I'm late," Hyacinth said jumping out of the limo and that just pulled up.
To think he was sent to Aquai for this case meant it was serious.
Two parts of the sentence lack a connection. "That he was sent [...] meant [...]", or "to think he was sent [...]; it meant [...]" might be better.
She glanced back at the black water and as she turned to leave she noticed Nem had stopped and his gazed was on the ocean.
Su to this he was consumed by a Void, but was revived instead.
???

Waking somebody up to ask whether they heard something doesn't seem to be the best the best thing to do. At the same time I would like to wake Moira up, I haven't reread everything yet, but from what I remember she is still in the dark about what is going on.
I'd say that one option is to ask if Hyacinth sensed something, which could be different from hearing since she may have "magical" senses. We are "positive" we heard something, but why are we certain it wasn't just a bad dream?

Besides, Hyacinth is our teammate when it comes to supernatural, so if we are investigating this we should be waking her up anyway.

Should we involve Moira? That's a more difficult question. Where would she be safer, with us, or sleeping soundly in a hotel room? Any Void still retaining their intellect would target her to retaliate against us if they knew she was important to us, but we are in a new location, so any Voids we encounter should not have prior knowlede of our Nys identity.

[x] Wake Hyacinth up and ask her if she sensed anything.

They can't talk here without waking Moira up, and if they go out they might as well investigate what it was.

Thank you for pointing out those typos.

As for the trip part, I forgot I hadn't introduced it yet. I'm confusing even when I trying to be clear.

The Sleepless Sheep is the workplace of Nys and Moira. Nys has worked there for a while and knows the owner. She's also always wondering if weird things are happening naturally or being caused by Voids. It's an explorable plot thread.

The line in Ren's profile was supposed to be, He was devoured by a void after his murder and revived. I think I had two thoughts come to mind on how to word it and smashed them together for that terrible sentence.

I think that it would be best to wake Moira up.
What would her think if she wakes up to use the toilet and find her two friends both missing?

The Room Above the Library
Here's the updated for the choice, Learning the History of Elemencia,

The Illustrious Kingdom of Illacrimina
----------------------

Nys couldn't believe how huge the Luxarc Library was. She had been there a few times before, but she had never been to the forbidden area. Hyacinth liked to call it that. The room the girl had spoken of was above the main library.

To get there, Nys had to ascend the black spiral staircase found on the fourth floor. It was normally blocked off by a glass wall on all sides. Students had asked about room for years but the Dean of the school didn't allow anyone up there, nor gave a reason why.

Hyacinth said she had been there once. The girl had gushed about how beautiful it was and how many books there were. Nys became curious about the place, so she ended up going alone one night.

Liri was still wherever, so it wasn't like she could ask him about the "forbidden library".

She snuck in, hopped over the wall, and went up the stairs. She knew transforming just to hop over wall was not what her powers were for, but her curiosity got the better of her. She wondered for days about what was in that room.

Once she reached the top, she was in what reminded her of a forest. There were bookshelves everywhere, with different trees and plants.

Walking around, she inspected the shelves. She didn't find any forbidden books, but found a few first editions of books she didn't care for. The place must have been a dream for Hyacinth, but Nys was never an avid reader. She did what she needed for her schooling and that was the end of that.

"What a surprise," the familiar sound of thousands of voices rolled into one made Nys flinch.

Nys looked behind herself to spot Lei holding a book open. Her bright red eyes wide with excitement.

"We are not fighting," Nys said, quickly backing away.

"Oh," Lei smiled as she sauntered over. The black inky substance that all voids seem to have dripped off her skin. It was like she had stepped out of a pool.

"I don't want to fight you. I only came here because I was curious." Nys said, holding her hands up in a non-threatening manner.

Lei stopped short and tilted her head, a smile still on her face. "Curiosity?"

"What's wrong with that?" Nys asked, walking over the rest of the way to meet Lei.

Lei took a moment to laugh and threw the book she had behind herself. "Curious about what?"

"Why do you even care? You're just here to mock me." Nys spun on her heels going back to looking for anything interesting.

"I'm interested. I thought you'd blindly followed that doll around. You're actually out looking for information."

"I have a brain you know and I can think for myself," Nys said, trying to get away from the void. Lei annoyed her, but she was right. She wanted to know more about everything. Anything to help her get a grip on what was really happening.

"How about this? What if I tell you a fairytale?" Lei said, catching Nys' hand.

Nys turned around to Lei confused, "What?"

"I don't like you. You're ignorant, but you've surprised me. So, I'll tell you a story." Lei pulled Nys in the opposite direction of where she was going at first.

They reached a small area where there was a small glass table and two glass chairs. Nys didn't think they looked sturdy, but Lei perched on one and waited.

Nys sat down warily but the woman wasn't very hostile this time around. She was mocking and teasing her more than anything else.

"Fine, tell me the story." Nys said crossing her arms over her chest.

"Listen well, I will only tell you this once, your highness," Lei's words were softer and the fond look on her face gave Nys the creeps.

-------

Once upon a time there was a small fledgling kingdom known as Illacrimina. Hidden far away in the middle of the Black Ocean, it was created in secret after the demise of the Shadow King. Sitting like a diamond in a sea of darkness, brighter than anything else, was the awe-inspiring city.

The citizens there were quiet people that served their queen happily. Unlike the other six kingdoms, the people had a special bond with their queen. A strange bond to outsiders, but to them it tied them all together as a family or something akin to that.

Eventually Illacrimina was found by outsiders. Those outsiders made contact with the city and found that the people of the kingdom were like every other place. They had music and art. They were also intelligent and had schools. They were peaceful and believed in treating outsiders with the same respect they had for each other.

Aquinnia was the first Kingdom to meet with Illacrimina. They ended up being friendly and traded material. Aquinnia was known for their water crystals that could purify the Black Ocean's water. They also had material that was resistant to erosion.

Illacriminia had many technological advancements that were desired. Their relationship with Aquinnia was fruitful for both sides.

It would have been wonderful if all the kingdoms could get along as well as they did.

Unfortunately, Vahnaine took notice of Illacrimina. Sine, the Vahnaine Queen, was a devout follower of a religion devoted to Escha. Her zeal for that god drove her to annihilate those she deemed unworthy.

The meeting of the two queens only led to disaster.

--------

Lei suddenly stood up. Her smile gone and replaced by anger like she remembered something terrible

"What happened?" Nys asked. She hadn't realized how pulled into the story she had gotten.
"Maybe I'll tell you one day, but for now that's it. See you later." The void disappeared in a blink of an eye.

Nys sighed deeply and rolled her eyes. She hated cliffhangers. Getting up, she left. On her way out she spotted a pure white book. It was the one Lei was holding earlier. The book was small and only had a few pages that were all black. She flipped through the book. The handwriting was beautiful and in white ink. Nys could understand the language, so she read the first page.

--------

3, Aul 00141

Tomorrow I meet with the Queen of Vahnaine. I am feeling nervous for the first time. I have only seen a portrait of her shared with me by Cherrimine. Yet, just from that I am afraid. The woman is like an ever burning fire. Eyes ablaze with passion.

I have not heard many good things about her. And what I have heard leaves me concerned. How can I leave a good impression?

Cherrimine says that this was my best course of action. I trust her judgement as the queen of Aquinnia, but I still have no clue what to do.

Nemone says that I will be fine and Lei is optimistic of the meeting but I find myself growing anxious. Quinn has worked tirelessly to make sure the palace is perfect, but I am still unhappy. My heart is strangely heavy.

Maybe Elirius will help me with making a good impression, but he is very against the meeting. He believes we should remain close with Aquinnia but shuns the idea of making new allies.

I understand, but should we remain separate from everyone forever. Is that wise?

What should I do? Where is the path I should follow for my people? I am unaware of it for now. I hope to find it soon.

-----

Nys closed the book and ran her fingers over the cover. She took the diary with her. If she was correct in her hunch, it belonged to the Queen of Illacrimina. It might hold the answers she desperately needed. She held the book close to her chest and left the room.

--------

*Nys has obtained the Queen of Illacrimina's Diary.
*Diary entries will be added as the quest continues.

I didn't want to do a wall of text on the history of Illacrimina, so I will try to do it as a side story. The history will be revealed in the diary entries.

What I'm getting from this is that there was a diplomatic accident that triggered a centuries long holy war against Illacrimina.

Dispite being isolated at first the other 5 kingdoms joined Illacrimina in an alliance against Vahnaine.
The Twilight queen then sacrificed herself in some way.
And somewhere along the line Sine joined the Alliance? I'm guessing that voids in this war forcing them to become allies.
Then the either the queen of Illacrimina or a eight queen was betrayed and locked away below the world (underground?)

Nem, the prince of darkness and the as of yet unknown 'queen of twilight' are both from the Shadow kingdom Illacrimina.
Nys is the Queen of light. This probably means that she is the queen of Vahnaine?

The Lightbringer Kingdom of Vahnaine

Unfortunately, Vahnaine took notice of Illacrimina. Sine, the Vahnaine Queen, was a devout follower of a religion devoted to Escha. Her zeal for that god drove her to annihilate those she deemed unworthy.

The meeting of the two queens only led to disaster.

But they had some religious differences which led to a holy war.

"The statue was a gift from the Queen of Vahnaine. It was given to the people of Aquine after they were defeated in a century-long war. It is a taunt in the form of a beautiful gift. The queen had a statue modeled after her and called it Mercy." Liri sounded bitter about the story.
Aquinnia joined on thye side of Illacrimina.
They had a Holy war and Vahnaine won. Liri is bitter about this.

"How is it that you are awake? No one has called you back." Liri asked.

"I crawled up myself to this farce of a world. To fall to Vahnaine would be more than a sin. It would be a disregard of her sacrifice," Eurytia didn't lower her weapon.

"You abandoned her with the rest of them! You left us to die and become monsters!" Liri was near a scream and Nys knew he was enraged. The doll was usually very composed. To see him like this was jarring.

Eurytia who has the move 'Escha's Prayer' has this to say about the Vahnaine.
And she wouldn't let Sine control her fate. Unlike the rest of the queens?

Liri's queen did something to stop the war between Vahnaine and the other kingdoms.

She gently tapped the bottom of the bubble-like shield and it began to rise. "The queens that protected that world."

When he reached higher than she was sitting, she stood up. "Those that threw me away."

Her emotions were no longer hidden as her smile became filled with malice. "The very ones that have forsaken me..."

He rose out of the white prison and higher into the sky above the forest. All around the forest he could see nothing but a white void and in the center a false paradise. His queen stood there her eyes wild with too many emotions and it clicked in his mind the strangeness he saw around her. Her name came back to him.

Although he was too far to hear her voice, he knew her words and they echoed loudly in his mind.

The very ones that have forsaken me… the Darkness.

Liri's queen seems to refer to herself as 'the Darkness'. And Liri is loyal to the prince of darkness.

"I don't like you. You're ignorant, but you've surprised me. So, I'll you a story."
"tell"?
On her way out she spotting a pure white book.
"spotted"

And somewhere along the line Sine joined the Alliance? I'm guessing that voids in this war forcing them to become allies.
When did that happen? Eurytia hated Sine to the end:
"I did what the rest of you could not. I did not stand idle as that woman destroyed everything. My heart is nothing compared to repaying that woman for what she has done. I may not feel the rage, but I know what I should do."
I am not sure there was anything to join.
Edit: though apparently...
"What about Hyacinth? She won't be able to accept Cara joining us. That's what we are talking about when we meet again, right?"

"Then make her accept it. It's the only way you'll be able to fight the true enemy of this world." Liri stopped patting her head and she looked up at the doll.

"It's not just the Voids?" Nys asked.

"No, it's not. There is a reason I am gathering you and the other queens together. You don't have to worry over it right now, but it is something you should keep in mind. Rest for now and we'll figure out the rest later." The doll said sitting down beside the woman.

Then which queen is Nys?
Are you forgiving Nys? Are you merciful?

...or should they pay for their sins?
I suppose the very first choice makes sense now. Kinda makes me want to see what would have been if we chose "unforgiving" instead.

"Nys hesitated, "Cara are you okay?"
erroneous quotation mark
Are you should I deserve this, your majesty?
sure

Some interesting tidbits and questions left to answer as I refreshed my memory about the story, now that I have a better idea of what it is about...
Nys will learn only one of the Sacred Palace Arts the others will never be learned. Choose wisely.

[] Light
… Swallowing Hate
[] Image
… Last Gift
[] Life
… Reprieve
[] Title
… Eternal Rest
"Image. I'll give up what makes me who I am. Just as they've lost themselves, I am willing to lose what makes me who I am."

An excellent choice. You have my blessing. You will free the lost ones from their pain, but when the time comes you will lose who you are. You will lose everything that makes you Nys.
"To save a Void you must touch the core with your bare hand, no other queen can do this. Once you do so, you must help them make peace with their past life. If you can, you will set them free. If you cannot then you will be corrupted. What did you give up?"

"Image," Nys said finally not afraid to tell the doll. Liri was finally going to help her the correct way.

"Last Gift, not the best choice but helpful. That art will allow you to steal away their memories, but they must be at peace before you use the art. If you steal away their memories before that moment, they will go berserk and you will be harmed," Liri continued the explanation.
"To make it easier on you," he began quietly. "Purifying them can drive you mad if you chose the wrong path. Even now the method you chose leaves much to be desired. You will suffer for them and I know that you are willing to do that, but I would much rather kill them," he said without remorse.
Okay, now that we know how Image works (erase their memories and lose ours in the process), I wonder what other choices would have done.
Would Light have weakened us through the purification process?
What would happen if we were to give away out Title as the Queen? We seem to have chosen to give away our life as Nys instead.
...and what about Life itself?
"Oh, um… you said I could set them free but what does that really mean. I'm not just mercy killing them in a nicer way, am I?"

"No, you're allowing them to return to where they belong," He said with a tender look on his face.

"Where is that?" she asked.

"To their queen's side. I won't say any more on that"
What is "the queen's side"? Where is it?
"The corruption is the result of something very precious being stolen from its rightful owner. Without it, nothing was left, but the void and from that abyss came the Voids. The corruption can not spread to humans in the way you think. Humans cannot become Voids, but they can be devoured by one. Thus, adding their souls to the Void's collective."
What is the source of the corruption? How does it connect to the "true enemy"?
"Okay woman. I knew you'd be chosen for this role before you were even born. It was mother's wish." Nem said staring at Liri who finally decided to stop acting like a doll.
[...]
"Mom? You said mom knew I'd be doing this?"

"Yes, it quite complicated—"

"You never speak about her, is this why?" Nys asked feeling like she needed to know more about her mother.

"Don't get ahead of yourself Nys. It's not the reason, but it is a part of the reason I don't speak about her. For now, I don't want to talk about it, and you'll be fine without knowing. Just continue doing what you feel is right. If you need my help feel free to ask. I'll support you when you need it." Nem said getting up from the couch.
There was something mentioned about our mother, but dropped almost immediately. How does one become a parent to a prince and a queen of different kingdoms? Come to think of it, same goes to Ai's and Hyacinth's mom.

[...]
"You lost your heart. Your emotions are gone because you refused to sleep. You wouldn't let Sine control your fate. Eurytia what have you done?" Cara said shaking her head.

"I did what the rest of you could not. I did not stand idle as that woman destroyed everything. My heart is nothing compared to repaying that woman for what she has done. I may not feel the rage, but I know what I should do."
Why does Eurytia think that sleeping would "let Sine control her fate"? Isn't Liri the one tasked with awakening them?
Was Sine the one who put them to sleep?
Why would it mean to "fall to Vahnaine"? Is the "false world" Sine's doing?
"They refused us diplomacy, even as we begged. Innocence? You are far too naïve to ever make a difference. It's laughable that you even attempted. You're nothing more than a means to an end."
Lei doesn't like us either. I wonder what transpired.
Nys gave the woman the orb, confused as to what happened. She thought she had to do more but just seeing Ren's memories seem to be enough. Something was off but Nys couldn't place it.
Was this referring to losing part of Nys' soul, or was something different in how the process worked for Ren? He was the only one we tested this technique on, so it's not like we have a lot to go on.

Edit:
I'll just say that Moira is also a queen and Ailan was from Illacrimina.
That's a huge spoiler (though we all suspected it), since there are supposed to be only seven queens. But maybe Crimina doesn't count, since she's been imprisoned/forsaken?

Also, Ailan? Let me dig through the quotes, because I got the impression he was Lux's.
"Finally, after so long. I can rest. I don't have to hurt anyone anymore. I've been in the dark so long, so long I don't remember the light. I want to see the light," he pleaded with her and Nys couldn't say no.

She looked at her blade and held it close to him as tears blurred her vision, "I don't— I don't know how to make it brighter. I-I'm new at this..."

"My silly queen," he laughed weakly at her broken voice, "You are the light."
"Mom, I just want to make sure I look presentable. I'm a Queen's Scholar now." Ailan said fixing his black cap. He studied his entire life to become a scholar and meet the Queen of Twilight. She was the adored queen of Illacrimina. Under her reign, the kingdom had prospered like never before. There had been no wars in decades thanks to her.
"As a human, he should not even be able to thrive after being devoured. As someone that does not belong to her, he will only die."
Ah, I see. I took Liri's quote about going to their queen's side, Eurytia's words about how a Void can (or can not) be saved, and Ailan's last words about wanting to see the light of Lux as connected, but Liri was talking about purification, and Ailan was dying. I expected more animosity from the subjects of Illacrimina, though.

Still, what did Eurytia mean about "as someone that does not belong to her"? At that point she didn't know about the deal we made. Was it possible to save the Voids even without it so long as they belong to the queen doing the cleansing? But Liri said we were the only queen who can do this...

Are all Voids from Illacrimina? Was it the only kingdom affected? It would explain Lei's bitterness towards Nys and Liri's towards Eurytia.

"What about Ai?"

"The Golden Queen, Chryseum."
Hyacinth turned away as the inevitable happened. The girl shattered just like the core. She didn't look back at the scene. She couldn't allow herself to be swayed. She had done what needed to be done. She jumped down to where Liri sat with Nys. The breeze that took her up gently sat her down as well, "Is she okay?"

"She needs healing." Liri said watching as the woman faded in and out of consciousness, "You are the Queen of the Silver Wind,

AI is the golden queen, Chryseum and Hyacinth is the queen of the silver wind.

We know AI's title.

Nys has 'the blessing of the void queen', I'm thinking that this might be the woman who was in Nys' Sacred palace, but I can't seem to pin down when we got it. That might open up the title of Twilight queen up for Moira.

Seaside Vacation II
Sitting up slowly, Nys got out of the bed. She went over to Hyacinth and she shook the girl. "Hyacinth wake up."

The girl groaned and opened her eyes. "Nys, what's wrong?"

"Do you sense anything right now?"

Hyacinth rubbed her eyes and rolled over. Then closing her eyes, she concentrated on her surroundings. Nys watched while still listening intently.

After a few minutes, Hyacinth shook her head. Nys wondered if she was mistaken, but before she could apologize for waking Hyacinth, the sound happened again. It was loud, like ocean waves crashing against her ears.

Hyacinth sat up and got out of the bed and pointed to the door. Nys nodded and followed her out of the room. Outside the room, Nys could hear the sound grow louder.

"I don't sense a void, but that sound," Hyacinth said, closing her eyes and trying again to search out voids.

"Maybe this isn't a Void?" Nys said. She was suspecting there might be other things out there they would have to fight against.

The sound stopped and was then followed by a voice.

Cherrimine? Is that you? Have you come back?

Nys turned to where the voice came from and followed it. Hyacinth called after her.

"What about Moira?"

"We won't go far," Nys said, continuing to follow the sound. It led them to the balcony at the end of the hall. The doors were wide open and a small girl stood there. She was drenched and smelled like saltwater. Her ashen skin had a sickly pallor with black welts that caught Nys' attention. Slate-blue eyes peered at her innocently. Her blue hair flowed out around her to the floor. Though she looked like she was Hyacinth's age, her eyes were blank. Her clothes were tattered. They looked old and foreign.

Their eyes met for a long second before the girl turned away and hopped off the balcony. Nys got to the rail too late. She looked over but didn't see the girl anywhere.

"There!" Hyacinth said, pointing to the blue glow on the beach. Nys didn't waste any time. She wanted to know who and what the girl was. All she knew so far was that she wasn't a Void. She jumped off the balcony and called her noble armor as she did. She landed gracefully on the sand and started after the girl.

Hyacinth followed behind her and doing the same. They both continued to pursue the ghost-like entity until they reached a small shack far away from all the resorts. It was a private area of the beach. Nys went inside the shack.

It was a mess. Old books thrown everywhere and a table overturned. It appeared someone had been searching for something. Hyacinth was behind her and looking around as well.

"What is this place?" Nys asked absentmindedly.

"Did she live here?" Hyacinth took in the shabby shack.

Nys walked around the small shack. There was a thin layer of dust on everything, but no cobwebs. She picked up one book. It was dusty, barely held together by a few threads on the spine, and probably missing a few pages. The language should have been foreign, but Nys could read it.

"Purification Process of Black Water, Deep Sea Restoration. It's some kind of science book." Nys said picking up the over turned table. She sat some of the books on the table.

"You can read that?" Hyacinth asked.

"You can't?" Nys glanced back at the girl. She shook her head and Nys examined the titles of the books that should be unreadable to her, but weren't.

Before they could continue speaking, the girl appeared again speaking once more.

The ocean is tainted again.

The girl stood at the threshold. Her empty eyes on Nys. Nys step forward, wanting to speak but the girl suddenly took off again, running away from them. Hyacinth followed after her, and Nys was left standing there.

She looked at the books all over the shack. Then back to the door.

The ocean is tainted, again?

Aquinnia was the first Kingdom to meet with Illacrimina. They ended up being friendly and traded material. Aquinnia was known for their water crystals that could purify the Black Ocean's water. They also had material that was resistant to erosion.
I thought that this would have been desalination.

The girl isn't dangerous, and she isn't in the mood to talk. Let's see what this "taint" is about... and possibly where do we know the language from.

Forest of Knowledge: Eleni
"Eleni, hurry!"

Eleni's father told her to move faster. She tried her best to keep up with her father. He was anxious, but she didn't really understand what was happening. Her heart was pounding as she followed behind her father.

"We must hurry, or will be caught in the shock wave. She's begging us to escape. We must move swiftly," her father explained, carrying her mother. Her mother had suddenly fainted right after the palace glowed. The light was blinding, but Eleni had found it pretty.

"Eleni, please stay close to me. You are falling behind," her father called back to her again. She sped up and caught up to her father. She grabbed onto his coattail.

He was so panicked that Eleni felt sick to her stomach. He was shielding her from the queen's words. It must have been terrifying if he would not let her hear. She held on tightly and followed.

The Serenity Port was full of people trying to escape the city. They were all fearful but remained as calm as possible so that they could escape efficiently.

"Please hurry, please escape. I can no longer stop her. Leave and never return! Do not come back here. I beg you."

Eleni stopped in her tracks, hearing the queen's voice. Her highness was desperate. Eleni had heard her several times throughout her life. Her voice had always been soft-spoken and soothing, but today she was in tears. She was in pain and she was trying to hold on so that they could escape. Eleni felt helpless. As a royal maid in training, it was her duty to help the queen, but she was useless. Even though she knew she was still learning, she felt guilty for not being able to help.

"Eleni, come—" her father stopped abruptly and looked toward the palace. His expression fell and his eyes fell on to her. "We don't have to run anymore."

"Please forgive me. I can not protect you. I can not give you any more time." The queen choked on her words as she spoke.

Eleni clasped her hands together and sent her thoughts toward the Queen for the very first time. "You have done so much for us. You do not have to fight any longer. We understand."

"Eleni..." her mother called her. "Your first message to Her Majesty was thoughtful and I am sure she appreciates it. My wonderful daughter, you would have been a wonderful royal maid."

The young girl looked at her parents. Both watching her with sad smiles. She knew this was the end. There were too many people at the port. Not everyone could escape, and the queen could no longer hold on. Her father put her mother down and the woman held out her arms for a hug. Eleni knew it was the last one. She ran to her mother, trying not to cry.

The city had become silent as everyone's attention was on the palace. The light was gone and soon the darkness would come to devour them.

Those that could leave the port still could not escape. The Vahnain Crimson Fleet would destroy any ships that left the ports. Any that searched for a place to hide realized that there were no hiding places. All they could do was accept their fate.

The sunlight died as the sky filled with black clouds. Soon it was pitch black and freezing. Even the warmth of her mother's body couldn't stave off the icy dread that sunk into Eleni's bones. Everyone felt the building terror as the light was stolen. The world became silent, and the last sound Eleni heard was their queen's heart-wrenching scream.

We currently have a tie. Hopefully, someone will break it. If not, I'll flip a coin or roll dice. I'll let voting go until Friday. I don't think anyone will break it but just in case.

If the tie isn't broken, I'll change my vote to:

[ ] Follow the girl

Huh, so Vahrain was still at war with Illacrimina when the disaster struck. Or were they trying to prevent the outbreak of whatever that was?

What was the source of the first corruption? Liri described it as "something very precious being stolen from the owner", but who did? And what would be so precious to a queen?

As an aside, did we hear a hymn anywhere around Moira, i.e. does Nys recognize her as a potential queen?

So far Nys has not heard a hymn when in Moira's presence and she does not recognize her as a queen.

This is presumably the last thing that Void_Envy remembered before she became a void.
Did Vahrain do something to the queen that caused their poeple to become voids? or did the queen do something herself in a last bout of desperation.
