"Liri distract it and I'll search for the core," Nys said taking off toward the monster. Liri did as she asked and caught the creature's attention but Nys noticed, unlike last time, the Void wasn't apprehensive. It went after the doll as soon as it saw him approaching.

Nys found that strange. The other Void wouldn't go near Liri unless it had to attack. She shook the musings away and started her search for the core. The Void was made of liquid and though she was stepping in deep puddles her stockings weren't getting wet.
Its monstrous body wobbled back and forth as it slung itself at Liri. The doll gracefully dodged the monster's attack making sure to keep the Void's attention.

Nys tried to remember the feeling she had when she came in contact with the core of the first Void but she wasn't sensing anything but dread. No matter how she looked at the Void she couldn't find the core. The thing wasn't even opaque, but she still couldn't find it.
She circled the monster one more time before she heard a shriek from Hyacinth. The girl was wailing loudly as tears overflowed from her eyes. She was on her knees with her head back and eyes wide in horror.

"Hyacinth stop! Don't give in to the despair!"

"It's not fair…It's not fair!" she began to mimic the Void, "You have everything! I'll never be good enough! Never perfect for her! I hate it, I HATE IT!!!" Both she and Liri's attention went to the girl as started to scream in agony.

"Hyacinth!" Liri went for the girl but the Void wasn't allowing that. The girl was on the brink and it was finally going to get what it desired.

The Void smashed its upper body into the doll. Forcing the doll inside the liquid form. Nys leaped out of the way using all the force she could muster. She shot up into the sky several meters, a glint caught her eyes at the top of the statue before the Void grabbed her ankle and slammed her into the ground. It didn't hurt too bad but Nys still felt like the air was knocked out of her.

She rushed to sit up trying to get its grip off her. Looking up she saw Hyacinth had finally stopped screaming and was now just staring up at the stars not moving, "Hyacinth you have to pull yourself together and run!"

The girl didn't respond and before Nys could say another word she was pulled inside the body of the monster as well. At first, she thought she would be fine. Liri was still struggling inside and it meant she could too.

Yet, as soon as she was inside, she was bombarded by screams and a collective of voices that weren't speaking as one. She also remembered rather quickly that even with magical powers she needed to breathe. She began to struggle violently.

"Nys, you have to stop that girl, or she'll be devoured. If she is submerged in its body, she will die." Liri's voice was in her mind again.

"What about you?"

"I can manage but you can't afford to stay in here too long. Help the girl find her key and destroy the core. Hurry!" the doll said holding it's hand out toward her. Before she knew it, she was falling in complete darkness and then she hit the ground hard near Hyacinth.

She was disoriented but had to gain her bearings quickly so she could save Liri. "Hyacinth, we have to go."

She grabbed the girl and led her further into the small forest. Hyacinth followed as quickly as she could but Nys was almost dragging her, "I can't keep up like this."

Nys looked back and saw what she was doing to the girl. She yanked her forward turned her around and picked her up over her shoulder without losing her momentum. "Liri's in danger and if he dies, we're both screwed. I don't know how to do anything and he's our guide."
Nys was bordering on panic but had to shove it deep down so she could stay in control.

"Our?"

"Yes!" Nys said as she heard the distinct sound of rushing water. She jumped for the trees barely escaping the arm-like appendage. She kept climbing until she was higher in the trees. She sat Hyacinth down on a sturdy branch, "You're like me a queen of something and we have to fight these things so they won't devour people and I don't want you to have to do this but I don't have a choice because if you don't it will attack you regardless—"

"Slow down you're saying everything too fast. What do you mean by queen?"

"You have a mark, right?" Nys was scanning her surrounding nonstop hoping she had enough time to explain.

"Mark?" Hyacinth looked down at her wrist. Nys grabbed the girl's wrist and turned it up so she could see the mark.

"That's it! You're a queen. We have to find the key, but Liri gave me mine." Nys sighed deeply frustrated over her situation.

"Lux, I can't help you. I'm just a schoolgirl. Not even good enough to make my mother happy. I'd just mess up. You should try to save Liri by yourself."

"I can't!" Nys lost her temper, "You're making it stronger! I can't save him if I can't even take a hit from it."

Hyacinth eyes swelled with water, "It's all my fault…everything is. It's not fair how great she is. She never messes up. I'm always making things worse."

"No, you're not!" Nys tried to refute her but her words fell on deaf ears.

"Yes, I am! You just said it! It's not fair. Why me! Why can't I be the one? She doesn't even deserve praise. She never had to work to achieve anything. Everything comes naturally to her. Everything! I hate her. I HATE her so much and she hates me too!"

Nys couldn't take it anymore. She felt her power leave her and she used that moment to slapped Hyacinth with all her might. The girl didn't even cry out, she just looked at her with sad gray eyes.

"I'm sorry Hyacinth," Nys said looking down at her hand. She had lost her focus and reverted unconsciously. She had never acted so harshly before. She was shocked, "I'm panicking…"

Hyacinth didn't say anything at first but grabbed Nys hand gently as if she had a moment of clarity, "I'm not a selfish person…Nys. Something is wrong with me. I don't' hate Ai, even if she hates me."

Nys might not actually be aware of that conversation but frankly I don't feel like trying to play the 'in-character' game anymore.

Nys did overhear that conversation, so we would still be in-character.

"Where are you?" came the voice on the other end. Nys was surprised by how clear she could hear the woman on the other end but then she could hear Hyacinth's heartbeat last night.

"Liri distracted it and I'll search for the core,"
Not sure what tense was meant to be used here, but it probably wasn't Past Simple.

I am not certain how that would make Hyacinth feel better. Yes, it's her mother that is pushing her, but she does have an inferiority complex due to how great Ai seemingly is at everything she puts her mind to.

Perhaps our goal would be better served by conveying that Ai's didn't choose her lifestyle, and doesn't want it forced on Hyacinth at the expense of her happiness and sanity.
"I don't know how she lives in that house with you. I should have taken her when I left, but you would have thrown a fit. Stop forcing her to be me. She will never be me and she doesn't have to be me. We aren't the same person. She deserves to make her path and you know no matter what you do Father won't take you b—"
[...]
"You forced me into a mold I didn't want! And for what, so you could have bragging rights? For your pride? Now, father knows what kind of woman you are, and you want to make it up to him by making Hyacinth another overachiever!"
It's Envy that affects her, right? We should tackle it from this angle, show her that it is misplaced.

-----

"Hyacinth, I overheard your sister arguing with your mother," Nys began.

"Ai? Why would she argue with mother, isn't she the favorite?" Hyacinth wondered to herself.

"That doesn't matter. Long story short, your Mom is angry at her striking out on her own and she's trying to show up your sister by forcing you to overtake her."

"That doesn't sound right, Mom loves Ai. Ai's her prized child, why would she be angry with her. She brings in so much money?" Hyacinth didn't seem able to comprehend what Nys was telling her.

"I'm guessing you really don't know all the deep stuff that goes on in your family. From what I gather, your sister doesn't want you to suffer chasing the life she herself didn't wish for. Both of you are pawns for your mother's game. But Ai really does love you." Nys said remembering how angry the woman was over the call, "She wants you to make a path of your own instead of being pushed onto one."

"Did she really say that? She doesn't hate me." Hyacinth was hesitant to believe her and Nys could tell that the girl really wanted to, but some doubts lingered. Her mother probably drilled it into her that Ai hated her and that she had to be better, but all along she was berating and comparing her to Ai. It was abusive and cruel.

"No, she doesn't. Your envy of her is understandable but you don't have to feel that way. Your mother made you that way. You can choose to love your sister. No one can stop you from doing that."

"I can?"

"You can." Nys said smiling brightly, "Ai might be great at many things, but I bet she isn't as good as you are at gardening."

For the first time in Hyacinth's life, she took an objective look at her feelings for her sister. Her true feelings that weren't influenced by her mother. The truth was that she didn't know Ai that well, so how could she hate her. She always drew her opinion of Ai from her mother. The perfect daughter that she was supposed to live up to. She was supposed to be a mirror image of Ai and that made her bitter. She was never allowed to be anything but perfect.

It was silly how long it took her to have such a simple epiphany. She didn't hate Ai and maybe she was a little jealous, but she didn't think Ai didn't deserve the success she had. She only felt those terrible feelings because her mother wanted her to feel inferior. Her mother had driven her into a corner with fear and through berating her. Hyacinth wanted to be free of her mother's manipulations. She was her own person with her own path to follow and even Ai believed that.

The moment she realized she wasn't beneath her sister or even equal to, but completely different caused Hyacinth's key shape spot on her left wrist to become an actual keyhole. In her right hand, a bright white light shined brilliantly. She opened her hand and a silver key appeared floating above her palm.

"It's your key," Nys said wondering why hers was given to her rather than just appearing.

"Somehow I know it belongs to me. Like I've been missing it for a long time and now I finally have it." Hyacinth looked up at Nys. She smiled before taking the key and unlocking her wrist.

-----

"It looks as though the girl has conquered her sadness. How wonderful," The woman spoke as she sat up from laying down, "you are quite something to return to this world from exile."

Liri ignored the woman. He had to escape the Void soon. His strength was waning quicker than he expected.

"She killed Beg didn't she?"

Liri turned his attention to the woman, "What of it?"

"How far are you willing to go?" she asked curiously.

"I will guide them to their destiny, no matter the cost," Liri said struggling inside of the Void's body. The woman raised an eyebrow at his reply but didn't question him more.

"May your efforts be blessed," she said tapping the surface of the water with her index finger, "May the queens of this world take their rightful places."

------

Nys couldn't believe how different Hyacinth looked in her Noble Armor. Like her, the girl had a small crown on her head but it sat perfectly straight on her head. Her suit was a soft pastel yellow with silver accents. Unlike her armor, Hyacinth had on shorts. She had a silver breastplate, but her chainmail was completely visible. She had on boots rather than high heels. Nys felt jealous of Hyacinth's suit. It looked practical and comfortable. Not that her suit wasn't comfortable it just didn't look comfortable.

Hyacinth looked at her armor and with a girlish giggle she spoke, "This is weird."

"I know but this is real, so we have to go fight that Void and save Liri," Nys said unlocking her lock and changing into her armor. She called her weapon and looked to Hyacinth wondering how she was going to explain how to go about calling a weapon. Liri taught her that too.

Hyacinth seemed to be intently watching her and without hesitation, she held out her hand and a wand appeared in her hand. The wand was silver with a large floating orb at the top. Inside the orb, it looked like the image of a hurricane from outer space. It was strange but so was everything else. Nys didn't bother overthinking it, "How did you call it?"

"I'm not sure. There were words in my mind and I just repeated them, and it appeared." Hyacinth said testing the weight of the wand.

"Okay, maybe it's a prodigy thing. Can you attack with that?" Nys asked wondering how smart Hyacinth was to figure out everything she had to be told.

"I think," she said holding out the wand toward a tree. "Split."

The tree she was aiming for suddenly split into two and both fell separate ways. Nys was surprised, "What was that?"

"I think it was wind," Hyacinth said looking at the orb on top of the wand. "Pretty sure it was wind. Oh, so I'm wind attuned or have an affinity for the wind?"

"Probably, Liri said I was the Queen of Light maybe you're the Queen of Wind?" Nys said wondering when she'd get cool powers.

"We should go," Hyacinth said looking toward the fountain. Nys nodded and both took off. Hyacinth fell in step with Nys easily like she was always a magical girl and just forgot.

They made it to the fountain where the Void still had Liri and the woman was still waiting. Nys rolled her shoulders and looked at Hyacinth, "This isn't a game. We have to be careful or we'll die."

Hyacinth nodded, remembering the night before and how dangerous it was, "What do we do?"

Void_??? is clearly different though, and Dahne already confirmed we can save some of the Voids. Given how Void_??? disapproved of Beg's death, she might actually tell us things unlike Liri.

Nys doesn't know that Voids have names (Liri's hasn't said anything). Nor would she know about ??? disapproving of Beg's death since she wasn't near them during the conversation. Of course you could make the argument that she has super hearing but would she be paying attention to their conversation while trying to deal with Hyacinth. If everyone wants to still go with this choice I'll accept, just something to think about.

And this is probably all my fault since I forgot the scene break

@Dahne: Eh, we could always go with the logic of "Void Beg" being an educated guess or attempted naming, given all the begging he did. Though even without hearing ??? and Liri's conversation, asking the unusually intelligent Void how to save her kind makes sense for Nys.

@Kkutlord I agree it's a smart choice, I don't want to interfere with the vote. I just want to make sure what the players know is kept separate from what Nys knows. Although I think I blurred that line a bit with introducing Ai. I'll do better.

("I didn't want to kill Void… I couldn't see it at all on them.) (Try to free Liri… Actively harming someone makes diplomacy a lot harder)
-------
As soon as they arrived in the park Hyacinth went for Liri. Her wand pointed at the creature, she spoke her command, "Sever!"

The Void was cut in half twice. Once above Liri's head then below his feet. Nys hurried over as the liquid melted off unable to keep a hold due to losing contact with the main body. Before she could reach Liri, the Void grabbed his limp body again dragging him further from Nys. "Let him go, please. We don't have to fight."

The larger void didn't respond so Hyacinth stepped forward to the female void that was staring at something in the distance.

"I'm not really sure what's happening here, but could you please have your friend release Liri? Actively harming someone makes diplomacy a lot harder." Hyacinth said to the Void still seated.

Nys put her broadsword away and the female void turned her attention to Nys with an unreadable expression passing over her face.

"You can help, right? You're not like this one." Nys said motioning to the Void that was holding Liri but not attacking them. It was waiting for some reason.

"Of course, I'm not like them. It's barely keeping itself together."

Nys hoped that speaking to the woman would be helpful, "Earlier I had to… to kill a void. I didn't want to kill him, but I didn't know what else to do. So... how can I save the other Voids? If I can't… then it's fine, but I don't want anyone else to die if I can avoid it."

"You want to save them? How noble of you, yet you're ready to kill them without hesitation if there isn't an easy way. If I can't save them, then it's fine. That's what you're saying, right?"

"I didn't mean it that way. I just meant—"

"What did you mean then? You don't want to get blood on your hands? Are they animals? If you can save them good, but if not put them down?" the woman accused her.

"What else can I do if they're hurting people. If I can't save them, I surely can't allow them to run rampant hurting innocent people like Hyacinth!" Nys was becoming angry with the Void. She wasn't listening to her at all.

"You're so full of yourself. As if you have the right to decide who is innocent. You really asked me if they can be saved but callously finished with, it's fine if you can't."

"Nys I don't think she's willing to help us. She doesn't want diplomacy," Hyacinth moved closer to the other queen, ready to defend if she needed to.

"Diplomacy? The chance at diplomacy ended ages ago!" the void stood up and the large creature started crushing Liri. The doll came awoke with a cry of pain,

"If you won't help us then we have no choice." Nys called the weapon back to her hand and readied herself, "You must have the other Void's core, right? I couldn't see it at all on them and if that's the case I will have to take it from you."

"What Void would trust another with its soul. You are such an ignorant queen. You know nothing about this world. You know nothing about yourself!"

Nys felt like she was getting nowhere and the longer she tried to talk to the woman the more she felt her words would be twisted. She didn't want to listen to the Void any longer, so she attacked, "Hyacinth work on freeing Liri!"

"Nys, don't!" Liri barely managed, but it was too late for the woman. She didn't listen and attacked the void with a downward slash. The Void stopped the blade with her bare hand, and it was covered in the black ink now. The light of the sword was burning through the inky darkness, but it wasn't fast enough. Nys's eyes widened in shock.

The Void yanked Nys forward with the blade and before she could react, the woman put her other hand through Nys' stomach. Nys dropped her blade and grabbed the woman's arm unable to think clearly. Only knowing that she had to remove the foreign object from her body.

Hyacinth finally cut through the other Void and freed Liri. She caught the doll turning to see Nys impaled by the stronger Void. "Nys!"

"Damn it, Nys, I told you… I told you not to attack her." Liri tried to get out of Hyacinth's arms.

"Wait, the other one will attack you again," Hyacinth said keeping the doll's movement's restricted.

"Aaaaa…. Aaaah!" Nys started to scream as she struggled with the woman.

"What did you learn?" she asked pulling her hand out of Nys' stomach and shaking the blood off.

Nys collapsed on the ground panting as blood rushed from the gaping hole in her stomach. "haa…haa"

Leaning down to Nys the woman stroked her blonde hair gently even though rage was swirling in her crimson eyes, "They refused us diplomacy, even as we begged. Innocence? You are far too naïve to ever make a difference. It's laughable that you even attempted. You're nothing more than a means to an end."

"Lei, stop!" Liri called the woman by her name, "…please."

The Void turned her attention to Liri, her red eyes softening, "Just this once, but Envy is your problem. I won't stop her."

Liri nodded and Lei walked back to the fountain and stepped in slowly sinking with her back to them. Liri sighed almost in relief and turned his attention to Hyacinth, "You have to stop Envy."

Hyacinth paid no attention to Liri as she ran to Nys' side. The girl panicked unsure of what to do as the woman shook from shock. "What do I do? What should I do!"

"You have to find the core and destroy it… Nys must have seen it without knowing it. Hurry, I'll tend to Nys. If you don't do anything Envy will attack us and I can't protect Nys right now only you can."

That went... super worry, and in hindsight it was dumb saying "if I can't then fine". Guess my reasoning was, since Liri said they "couldn't" be saved then acknowledging that would be better. I did not think Nys would resort to violence though, kind of... proves Lei right?
