"First, when we were at the fountain why did you say that the statue had another name?" Nys said remembering how the doll looked at the statue.
"A millennium ago-"
"W-wait a minute how old are you?" she cut in.
"It does not matter. Listen or I won't continue," he warned her as she nodded in agreement to remain quiet.
"The statue was a gift from the Queen of Vahnaine. It was given to the people of Aquine after they were defeated in a century-long war. It is a taunt in the form of a beautiful gift. The queen had a statue modeled after her and called it Mercy." Liri sounded bitter about the story.
"This isn't in the history books," Nys said remembering the statue's history well.
"Why would it be. Elemencia's history has been rewritten. It has been destroyed by falsehoods," Liri said getting up but quickly fell back down, "In the end, none of it matters. If you knew the truth nothing would change. The statue will remain a lie. A display of superiority over people long dead."
Nys felt like there was much more to the story but Liri was getting angrier the longer he talked about it. He also seemed weak and his condition worsened by the minute. She didn't think she could continue to ignore it.
"Are you injured? You looked like you're hurt. Is there something I can do?" she wanted to assist the doll where she could.
The doll sighed before grimacing, "Yes, I am. Your incompetence forced me to do something I physically can not."
Nys's eyes widened at his response. "What did I do? You seem to be fine during the fight."
"Since you blindly attacked the Void, I was forced to use an art to save that girl."
"I'm sorry that wasn't my intention, I thought you wanted me to attack. You said now and I just reacted, also what's an art?" she was curious.
"An art is an ability or skill. It requires the manipulation of Kren. I can not use Kren any longer. To save that girl from being devoured I had to move fast. Faster than this form allows me." he explained lying down fully now.
"So it's a special move?"
"This isn't a game Nys. Sacred arts is something only a few can perform. It requires a lot more than a button input. I guess even you will have to open your sacred palace one day." he said thoughtfully.
"I'm sorry. I should think more rather than attacking without thought." she admitted solemnly, "I won't make the mistake again but is there some way I can help you?"
"No, you lack the type of knowledge and Kren manipulation to help me. I'll be fine once my blessing returns," he said closing his eyes.
"Blessing?"
"It does not concern you," Liri said with finality.
"Okay, okay moving on to the other question. Why did you say the girl was bait?"
"The Void devours those that are in despair. The ones that are bullied or ones with broken hearts. People who are unhappy or depressed," Liri informed her.
"How did you know it would attack her of all people?" Nys asked becoming wary of this so-called guide.
"I can sense those who have the greatest emotional distress. Those are the people that the Void will try to consume. The more the stress the more desirable to the Void."
"And I'm supposed to stop them?" She asked laying back down on the bed beside the doll.
"As one of the seven queens, it is your duty to stop them. If not this world is doomed to be devoured," the doll opened its eyes and stared at her. His red eyes showed no emotion but Nys felt like she was being judged.
"Seven, there are more like me?" Nys didn't know if that was relieving or disconcerting that someone else would have to experience what she had to last night.
"Yes, the six remaining queens must be awakened. You can not win this war alone against the Void," Liri started turning his attention to the comforter he was lying on.
"Does the Void have people inside all of them?" She asked afraid of the answer.
"Yes."
"How did they get inside those things?"
"They were forced into the darkness against their will. It happened a long time ago. The story is not important to your mission," he said pointedly.
Nys knew Liri was hiding the rest of the story just like with the statue. It was obvious, but she didn't think she could force an answer out of him.
"Will you continue to fight?" He asked. Again the cute voice should sound sweet but remained emotionless.
"Do I have a choice?"
"Yes, I can not make you fight or become a queen. It is not within my power to do so but know this. Since you have awakened, the Void will come after you, as you are a light to them. They will come after your family and your friends."
"Why! If they are attracted to distress and depressed people, why come after my family. Nem isn't depressed or distressed," Nys said sitting up abruptly. She didn't understand the doll or the things happening around her but her brother was not about to be dragged into this.
"As queen, those around you are your subjects. The Void will try to devour your subjects if you do not stop them. They do this to lure you to them… to bring you into the same distressed state they desire," Liri explained calmly.
"So I did this to myself?"
"No, fate did this to you. That is something you have no control over," he corrected her. She looked down wondering again if all this was real.
"I don't want to bring anyone else into this. I can defeat them myself. I won't make anyone suffer this kind of pain!" Nys said desperately. Liri sat up slowly with a disdainful look.
"Your heart is too pure and you're naive to believe you can end this with your power alone. Sparing those queens will never be allowed as they must end this." Liri said with displeasure in his voice.
"Waking the other queens. That is not something you can stop. They will be attacked by the Void. Isn't it better that they are prepared for what will inevitably happen? Even if they are not awakened, the Void will attack them because they are drawn to their power."
Nys flopped back on her bed with a loud sigh, "I don't want anyone else to have to feel like I did."
"That is not something you can prevent. You can not save them from that reality. They will have to face these terrible things just as you do. You can only offer them your support, so they do not succumb to their emotions, but that is all you can do," Liri was so precise with how he talked to her. Everything was so clearly stated that Nys felt like she knew what was expected of her even if he never said it out loud.
"I'll do my best," she said getting up, "I will go to my morning class so stay out of trouble or whatever."
"You are the one most likely to get into trouble," Liri gave her an eye roll before laying back down.
She went to take a shower and get ready. As she prepared for class, she had a nagging thought that would not leave her. One she knew she would not get an answer to any time soon.
Who created the Void?
-------
Class ended uneventfully for Nys, which was a good thing since she had enough adventure the night before. A few more test and she would be done with the school year.
Luxarc University was a grueling school to attend, but she was doing pretty well. Well, if you didn't count that she still didn't have a major.
"Nys!" Moira called after her. She stopped to see her best friend running to catch up with her.
Moira Adrielynn was everything Nys wish she could become. Moira was pretty and sophisticated. Standing at 192 cm with a pear shape body and a sharp bob haircut, Moira was a force to be reckoned with.
"Why were you late for class? I thought you wouldn't make it," she said finally getting over to her.
"I had a long night. I lost my phone," Nys said squeezing the bridge of her nose. She was still shaken up over last night. Her phone had been forgotten in the fight the night before.
"Hmm," the taller woman said with a disbelieving tone, "Is that it. You're never late to class."
"That's it, Moira. Just a lost phone." Nys tried to convince her.
"Okay, but if you want to talk about it, let me know," she knowingly. Everyone always knew when she was lying.
Nys looked up at her friend that was staring down at her with concern. "I'm fine, don't worry so much."
"So are you working tonight?"
"Nope. It's my day off," Nys smiled happily.
"Alright then we should have dinner tonight and hang out," Moira said pulling her gold purse strap farther up on her shoulder. She always had an expensive taste and since her family was well off she could indulge in it.
"Okay, but Nem probably wants to have dinner with me too, so come over to my place," she loved the face Moira made, just mentioning her brother.
"Nem will be there?" Moira said, a blush filling her cheeks.
Her best friend had the biggest crush on her older brother. It was so adorable, but Moira never tried to talk to Nem. It was frustrating for her since she thought the two of them would make a cute couple.
"Yeah, come so you can drool all over him," Moira pushed Nys' shoulder some as embarrassment took over.
"Will you stop? Nem doesn't like me. He probably doesn't even notice me," she said running her fingers through her bangs. The usually straight-laced woman just melted at the thought of her older brother.
"Oh Moira, you haven't even tried," Nys said laughing.
"Fine. I'll come over but don't make this into some match-making session,"
"That's fine. It's just dinner with the three of us and a movie. Nothing more, okay," she reassured her friend.
Moira nodded and fixed her red uniform tie. Luxarc was a college but still had a uniform policy since it was so prestigious. Nys didn't particularly care for it since black and red were such dark colors, but it worked for Moira. It was like the uniform was specifically for her. The high waist pencil skirt accentuated her perfectly.
"Hey, walk me to the restroom," Moira said pulling on Nys' arm, "Then let's go have lunch."
"Alright," Nys said following Moira.
----
While Moira fixed her lipstick Nys leaned on the sink. Her thoughts on last night's events. With everything happening so quickly Nys was feeling overwhelmed. She wanted to tell Moira but that would put her in danger.
"What's wrong?" Moira asked before pressing her lips together to spread the lipstick evenly.
"Nothing. I think I'm just tired," she said turning to look at herself in the mirror. She looked like she had lost a night's worth of sleep. Her blue eyes had dark circles around them.
"Why don't we reschedule. If you're tired, you need to rest."
"No rescheduling, you're coming over," Nys said fixing her hair. She glanced over to Moira that was brushing her black hair and checking out her red underlights.
Nys looked back at the mirror at her blonde hair. She had cut it recently and was regretting losing the length.
"Okay, but at least take a nap before I come over. You're dull when you're sleepy," Moira suggested.
"All right," once they both were done priming, mostly Moira, they headed for the door. Before Nys got to the door Moira grabbed her around her waist and yanked her back just at the door flew opened. She would have been hit if Moira hadn't pulled her back.
The taller woman always had a sixth sense about danger.
Cara Tarin walked into the restroom with a sour look on her face pretty face. Her two minions following her and another girl who looked far too young to be at the university.
"So you will explain why you told the professor I didn't do a thing in our project!" Cara yelled at the young girl.
"I-I d-didn't l-lie…" the girl said grasping at her skirt.
"Yes, the hell you did! Did I not delegate everything to you?" Cara asked.
"T-that's n-not-" the girl was cut off by Cara with a loud slap. Nys was stunned.
"That's not what!"
Nys knew this was a volatile situation, especially since Moira was standing right behind her.
Moira despised bullies. So much so that in grade school she was constantly in trouble for getting into fights with them. The woman behind her was still the same except a little wiser in picking fights, so Nys hung back and let Moira handle the situation since she knew Cara. If the two minions decided to be stupid Nys would come to Moira's aid.
Cara was nineteen but that would not stop Moira from speaking her mind. The tall woman pushed Nys to the side gently. Nys moved over and let her friend get past her.
"Cara," Moira said looking down at her. Her voice was full of authority like a mother talking to her child.
The redhead looked up at Moira taking in her height as everyone did when they met her, "M-Moira."
"Cara, I haven't seen you in a while," Moira said cornering the smaller woman against the wall. A mischievous grin overtook her lips.
Cara and Moira had one class together, which taught Cara an invaluable lesson about Moira. That lesson was that Moira could be a terrifying person when angered.
"What are you d-doing here?" Cara asked with a slight stutter.
"It's the restroom. What do you think I was doing? What are you doing, hmm?"
"I-I was, I was just talking to a friend," Cara looked over to the young girl that had moved herself to the corner of the bathroom away from everyone. Her head down and eyes to the floor. She was shaking.
"Friend? Doesn't look like that Cara," Moira invaded Cara's personal space even more and not even Cara's so-called friends tried to stop her. The two girls were just as afraid of Moira as Cara. Not because Moira could tear them in two, which she could, but because Moira's uncle owned the university.
"L-look, you don't have to do anything rash. I'll just go, okay?" Cara said trying to move away from Moira though she was already on the wall.
"That's fine," Moira threatening aura abated. She stepped away from the young woman, "Go ahead. Leave."
Cara didn't waste any time. She turned and left with the two other girls. Nys turned her attention to the last girl. She was crying and Nys felt bad for her.
She remembered how upset Moira was when she was picked on. It's hard to believe this was the same woman now. She could run off anyone with just her height and some choice words versus the little girl that always jumped into a fight head first.
"Hey, are you okay?" Nys asked the girl as she inspected her.
She nodded and looked up and Nys was taken aback. It was the girl from yesterday. The girl with the pale gray eyes and brown hair. She was dressed in the university's standard black and red uniform. Her brown hair pulled up into a tight bun.
"Yes," looking over to Moira next, "Thank you."
Moira smiled at the girl. A beaming smile of accomplishment, "No problem. I can't stand people that think they can push others around."
The gray-eyed girl smiled hesitantly and Nys couldn't help her smile blooming. "So you're a student here?"
The girl nodded to Nys' question, "My name is Hyacinth Ashbridge. I'm one of the five Stars of Luxarc University."
"Really!" Nys and Moira said in unison. The girl in front of them was a prodigy. She smiled and nodded sheepishly.
