7 Days 8 Years Snow Carol, on the subject of non-rayshift time travel:
Below is a series of excerpts from Christmas 2023, relating to the subject of time travel outside the context of rayshifting, and Nemo's use of it in this event.
For further details on time travel by use of rayshifting, please refer to
this post.
As specifically pertains to the discussion below, some background information on what was established regarding thaumaturgical time travel prior to this event:
- Per Extella Material and other sources, approximately once a century, the World creates a Quantum Time-Lock / Human Order Foundation based on an average of the apprehension of notable events within the relevant period by "humans alive in the era." The action of establishing a QTL locks these notable events from alteration by the influence of time travelers and similar intervention, but events that aren't subject to the lock were supposedly changeable in some capacity.
- The factor that gradually realigns a timeline to the average pattern of events recorded per a QTL is referred to as 修復力, which has appeared in translations as "the Restorative Force" or "the Corrective Force." This is apparently something like a narrower subset of 抑止力 — variously, "the Deterrent Force" or "the Counter Force."
- Aside from realigning altered timelines, the Restorative Force was prior to Christmas 2023 non-explicitly implied to be the factor responsible for purging time travelers projected into the past via rayshifting, in the circumstance that observation from "the present day" doesn't anchor their existence to confirmation. A time traveler successfully purged is presumed to be lost beyond reclamation.
- Whereas living humans that time travel via rayshifting are effectively "projected" into a target era in a manner vaguely comparable to Gradation Air, primarily spiritual existences such as Grails and Einzbern homunculi can make use of rayshift for one-way teleportation, along the lines of a "Star Trek style" transporter. The in-bound rayshifting of existences not primarily spiritual to Chaldea (for example, food supplies) apparently requires something a little extra, per da Vinci's mysterious bag in Karna's interlude.
- The Restorative Force is apparently incapable of independently purging Grails in excess of a certain scale. Outward transport of Grails via rayshift unsummoning is per QSH's interlude apparently capable of functionally altering the course of history.
- In LB6, the Saint Graph of the Morgan who rayshifted her personality / memories into her local analogue was annihilated. The Morgan native to LB6 was thereafter able to change the course of history, but it isn't entirely clear that a system that periodically imposed QTLs was functional within the context of LB6.
- Prior the completion of rayshifting technology, Lord Animusphere committed a fair amount of resources to the development of the Shadow Border as a "conventional" time machine, capable of "physically driving" to other time periods. The acquisition of the Paper Moon was in some capacity related to this, as absent of it, the Shadow Border would be entirely incapable of coherent navigation within the Imaginary Sea. Eventually, the development of the Shadow Border was for various reasons abandoned in favor of rayshift technology.
That being said, excerpts from this event, with summaries of key points, and a bit of commentary toward the end:

On the 5th day of the event, as of descent to Imaginary Submersion, Depth 5, BB appears to obstruct Nemo.
Reading her intentions as an offering of warning, he comments that on descending to Depth 6, he'll be contending against something he refers to as
冠位の壁 — the Boundary of the Grand. Presumably, this would be the point at which he anticipates interference from a Grand Servant.
On the following day, prior to departure, he has a conversation with Guda:

Santa Claus is here described as "a fantasy capable of delivering good fortune to anyone in any location."
Nemo's stated objective in assuming the aspect of Santa Claus was to take advantage of this quality, perhaps to establish Nidana / a tie of En to "the designated recipients of presents" for purposes of thaumaturgical instrumentality; as a way of boosting the probability of arrival at a target.

Um, Old Man of the Mountain. Actually,
@ Old Man of the Mountain
I see. Offer forth thy head.
@ Nemo Santa
But I haven't yet explained anything!?
@ Old Man of the Mountain
As of thy arrival at this location mine by 『such an itinerary』, I grasped thy intent.
Asking forgiveness is unnecessary.
If there be error, thou shalt vanish.
By such [consequence] does thy [trespass] come to correction.
I be of the Station of the Crown no longer, and shall not interfere.
The others of the Station would likewise stay their hand, excepting one.
@ Nemo Santa
... do you think I'll succeed?
@ Old Man of the Mountain
Thou asketh a curious thing. 『Whatever the case, the World changes not at all.』
If thy strength be insufficient, thou shalt come to annihilation, leaving behind not even a name, let alone a [set of] bones.
But thou wert to begin with 『one who was nobody at all』.
A squaring away of [loose ends] would in outcome be as unnecessary, perhaps.
— but hast thou the leeway to concern thyself with [probability] of success?
@ Nemo Santa
I see. Thank you.
The final doubts that [remained within] my heart have cleared away.
@ Old Man of the Mountain
But take heed.
Long lingering at the boundary of life and death did the boundary itself I become.
And in so touching death did I death become.
[Therefore], as he who lingers in an impossible World becomes as an existence [likewise] impossible —
that which brings to occur phenomena what cannot arise
becomes [itself] an existence that cannot arise.
In the context of the metaphysical World, it is faith alone what binds to preservation existences rendered absent of meaning.
— meaning is a matter what ought not be forgotten, Captain —
in order that we meet again, at the terminus of a distant causality.
---
@ Nemo Nurse
Welcome back, Leader.
Were you able to give your salutations to the Old Man of the Mountain?
@ Nemo Santa
Aah. He was a Heroic Spirit more frightening than I imagined.
It would seem that [from his perspective], the [mission] we're about to undertake is something on the order of a morning prayer.
Though I approached to inquire whether our endeavor was permissible, he brushed aside our doubts and misgivings altogether.
In summary, 『It doesn't matter, so do as you will.』
@ Nemo Nurse
Maa. Quite strict [of him].
In that case, shall we proceed as planned?
@ Nemo Santa
Aah. Marine. Please communicate to the Master that 『we won't be returning home today』.
All hands, to your stations!
Imaginary Submersion Depth 7. Destination, AD 2015!
This ship hereforth commences the prosecution of temporal travel, setting course to 『the promised hour』!
Nemo survives an encounter with the Old Man of the Mountain, acknowledging in dialogue the use of Guts.
The Old Man of the Mountain attributes his sparing of Nemo to something he names as
救世の加護 — "the Blessing of Salvation." The nature of this is unclear.
Nemo doesn't recognize this as a known attribute or Skill associated with his Saint Graph as a Santa Claus, and wonders if Santa possessed such an attribute.
After some conversation relating to the Christmas gift Tiamat wanted Nemo to deliver to the Old Man of the Mountain, the subject switches to the matter of Nemo's mission.
Simply by the way in which Nemo arrived at his location, the Old Man was able to guess that Nemo was making use of the Imaginary Sea for purposes of time travel.
He warns Nemo that if there's some "error" in the way he's going about this business, he'll as a "correction" (
清算, "settlement" as an outcome of a legal dispute; often, "liquidation") face the consequence of vanishing.
Being as the Old Man is no longer a Grand, he won't interfere, but he notes that one amongst the current Grands may.
When Nemo asks the Old Man his opinion on whether he'll succeed, the Old Man replies that even if he does, "the World changes not at all."
There's a bit of clarification on conditions for failure, where the Old Man gives that if Nemo's strength isn't equal to the task, he'll face annihilation, and vanish without leaving behind even a name.
However, acknowledging that as Nemo was to begin with "one who was nobody at all" — referencing
the probable origin of Nemo's name in the legend of Odysseus — he speculates that perhaps "a settling of affairs in the aftermath would be unnecessary."
As a final warning before Nemo departs, the Old Man gives that in lingering at the boundary between life and death, he became the boundary itself; and in long being in contact with death, he became death itself.
Perhaps referencing the Imaginary Sea, he gives that things that dwell in an impossible World become impossible, and that things that give rise to phenomena that are invisible or "cannot arise" may themselves become things that are invisible or "cannot arise."
Saying that in a metaphysical context, only faith can bind to preservation things rendered absent of meaning, he warns Nemo that meaning is something "that ought not to be forgotten."
Returning to the Nautilus, Nemo sets course to his final destination.

fortunately, this problem can be cleared. It's nothing to worry about.
Thus concludes the overview of the operation. Does anyone have any questions?
— Very good. Hereforth, this ship shall initiate a special mission.
The operation name — 『8 years Snow Carol』
I'll be in your care, everyone.
In the name of Santa Claus, let that this package be delivered!
Nemo provides an overview of the operation that he's so far conducted in this event.
Restating what he explained to Guda earlier on, he gives that "Santa Claus is merely by virtue of being Santa Claus empowered to deliver miracles unto the people."
In his capacity as Triton — "a Child of the Sea who promises the safety of a ocean voyage" — Nemo endeavors to deliver a blessing / charm to the Guda that existed prior to the Incineration of the Human Order.
Such a delivery can only be made by "one who was nobody at all." More specifically, by virtue of possessing such a trait, the Phantom Nemo is implied to be afforded a degree of resistance to having his Saint Graph compromised by direct exposure to the Imaginary Sea, allowing that he can independently conduct Imaginary Submersion.
This places him amongst the handful of Servants capable of enduring the Imaginary Sea, where most others bear a direct immunity to the Hollow / Imaginary Numbers Element, or have the capacity to assert control over the Element, as is the case the case with the Foreigners that appeared during Imaginary Scramble.
Navigation to the past subjects the Nautilus to incredible pressures, which necessitates time for the hull of the ship to regenerate between trips. This limits travel to the depth of a single
年層 — "annual / year stratum" — in a given day, in excess of which the ship risks critical structural failure. The Imaginary Sea also assails the Nautilus with obstructions that vary per the annual stratum, assuming the forms of enemies Chaldea encountered in the year that the stratum represents.
The Paper Moon is used to log the coordinates arrived upon at the end of each day of the journey, allowing that the Nautilus immediately starts from said coordinate the following day.
Nemo gives that in performing an intervention unto the past, the Restorative Force of History will purge parties that alter events, rendering them as entities non-extant.
More accurately, absent of the necessary Operational Resilience (
活動強度;
活動, lit. "activity") to act within an Adjacent World, an effort to alter the past will instead result in the purging of the time traveler performing the intervention.
Even supposing that a time traveler of high Operational Resilience were to prevent the bombing of Chaldea, it would invalidate the timeline of the current Chaldea.
Even an act as simple as saying "thank you" can snowball into a major deviation.
Thus, Nemo Professor summarizes the rule the operation needs to abide by as: "Nothing can change, and nothing can be appended."
Any encounters engaged within at destination must fall within the bounds of "things that are a matter of course, given the time and location." As the destination is Chaldea in the year 2015, on the day of the Incineration, and the Nemos have obtained a detailed schedule of the locations of Chaldea staff present within the facility, they plot out a predefined infiltration route to the objective, complete with disguises in case staff members are encountered.
Further, the operative with the highest Saint Graph Resilience (
霊基強度) will be the one performing the infiltration — presumably as a measure of maximizing survivability within the Imaginary Sea? Being as Nemo's crew are implied to have Resilience inferior to his own, he's the only realistic selection for the operation.
The plan is to stop the Nautilus a distance away from the specified date, and have Nemo independently swim a depth of "several hours" per Zero-Sail, to surface from the Imaginary Sea within Chaldea Base shortly before the Incineration. There, he'll perform a solo infiltration, assuming a disguise to reach his delivery target.

If it happens that on the other end, you run across [that guy], give him my regards.
[Do me a favor] and pass along the words, 『Are you an idiot?』
Because I imagine the two of you are likely to hit it off.
Possibly the first time we've seen Merlin "properly" (?) acting in the capacity of a Grand.
Deeming "the miracle of Santa Claus" as something too excessively unreliable for Nemo to stake his life on, Merlin takes his mission as nothing short of recklessness.
Merlin explains from his perspective certain details of Nemo's operation not clarified in the previous excerpt.
Specifically, the "delivery" entails a replacement of the Chaldea uniform Guda put on on the day of the Incineration, exchanging it with an exact replica that Nemo ordered from Habetrot — incorporating within its weave a blessing described as "a dream-catcher; a ward against the foulest of luck, that in the battles hereforth, misfortune isn't encountered."
However, as talismans (
護符) express their maximum potency upon the faith of their bearer, a talisman unknown to its bearer is largely void of effect. By virtue of the delivery being conducted in secret, without being detected by anyone, Merlin gives, regarding the scale of the effect, "if hypothetically a certain individual suffers nightmares every day, the 'luck' you bestow would exert an effect on the order of permitting that they awaken a second earlier than they otherwise might."
Ergo, changing history is averted because the impact of the talisman amounts to something on the order of a rounding error — but precisely given the lack of returns on a risky investment, Merlin feels that the act of attempting something so potentially suicidal is pointless.
Acknowledging that the "rounding error" was slight enough that even SHEBA wouldn't be capable of discerning it, Nemo gives that he understood that the impact would be negligible from the start, but that performing the act was important to him in any case — comparing it to the sort of risk-taking that Guda's engaged in to survive thus far.
He explicitly mirrors Sion's sentiments during Ordeal Call 1, couching his efforts here and now as his answer to a parallel insecurity within his heart, that he wasn't properly a "companion" to Guda and the others, being an outsider to Chaldea.
Hearing this, Merlin changes his stance, and allows Nemo to advance.

Day 8 said:
Coming to a remaining distance of about eight hours, he exited the hatch of the Nautilus, independently [taking] to the Imaginary Sea.
Here on out, it wouldn't do to approach [aboard] the Nautilus.
Were the submarine to surface in the Antarctic, [it would enter unto] SHEBA's observation.
It would have to be he himself — minimally equipped — that alone surfaced to Chaldea Base.
Per his retrogression along the time axis, the space [about him] surged alike to fierce current, assailing his flesh as he advanced [in the heading] of its source.
Making his lower body as that of a merman, he swam [against] a spatial flow alike to a mixer.
@ Nemo Santa
ーーー、ーーーーーー。
To the whole of his flesh, there clung a negative cold, and an extreme stress [what threatened his] annihilation if he should even slightly deviate from the [predefined] route.
He was accustomed to diving in Imaginary Numbers Space, but appending [the element] of temporal travel [turned it into] something else altogether.
An ordinary Saint Graph wouldn't be capable of enduring.
[To speak nothing of] moving against the flow, the mere [act of] holding position [courted a progressive] attrition.
The Active Time allotted to him was sixty seconds.
In the ocean, a single second had never felt so long.
@ Nemo Santa
ーーー、ーーーーーー。
Vertigo compromised his field of vision.
Fear [threatened to] divest him of consciousness.
Clenching his teeth, he forcibly dragged his frayed senses back to their normative values.
It was necessary to clear the seven hours of distance unto the destination coordinates.
Would he make it within the remaining Active Time?
In the first, would his Saint Graph [actually] endure for [the entirety of] the time remaining?
The operation permitted [nothing so much as] a margin [for error].
The upper threshold of his Saint Graph's endurance was sixty seconds, and the minimum time required to arrive at the destination was likewise sixty seconds.
Not even a single miss was permissible.
Not even a single instance of deceleration was permissible.
If he breached the bounds of the current flowing forth from 2015 by a single finger, the operation would fail, and his flesh would disperse.
Literally, it was [an action premised in a conviction unto death].
Neither sanity nor insanity what would such an operation endorse.
There awaited not a reward that corresponded to the challenge of the navigation, nor anything what could be deemed a return [on the investment].
That being the case, what? What exactly would be gained of the operation?

『Aah. By such a method, the problem of time paradox isn't of issue.
However, simultaneously, 「the effect [of the charm] is likewise mostly voided」.』

Apparently, Nemo is reasonably well-acquainted with swimming in the Imaginary Sea, but the added dimension of time travel transforms the endeavor into something else altogether.
To avoid detection by SHEBA, the Nautilus stops at a distance of about eight hours away from the surfacing point, and Nemo independently disembarks — transforming his lower body into that of a merman, and swimming the remaining distance.
The upper threshold of his resilience to the Imaginary Sea is about a minute of exposure, and a depth of eight hours requires about sixty seconds to traverse at minimum.
The mere act of holding position within the spatial flow compromises his Saint Graph at a progressive attrition, but constantly maintaining a steady advance is necessary to clear the distance in the allotted time.
Ergo, there is no leeway for error, and he has to bear with the spatial current the entire way, even as it threatens to tear apart his body.
As he advances, his mind shifts to thoughts on why it is that he's pursuing this course of action; but he's abruptly assailed by visions of Guda's memories — her experiences in the Garden of Lost Will, among other things.
Witnessing these memories, he's reminded of what Merlin stated, regarding the potency of his gift amounting to reducing a second's worth of nightmares.
Even if that's the extent to which his gift can render aid to Guda, he concludes that it's worthwhile.
At Chaldea Base in 2015, we hear the "announcement" that greeted Guda in the prologue of the game — except that the speaker is now tagged as CHALDEAS.
As a matter of summary —
Modes of thaumaturgical time travel to the past, and the response they provoke from the Restorative Force:
- Rayshift (Living Human):
The time traveler is purged by Restorative Force unless anchored to confirmation by observation from the present day per use of some equivalent of Clairvoyance / Thousand-League Eyes, such as CHALDEAS and SHEBA.
Even in the event that anchoring to confirmation prevents the time traveler from being purged, deviations introduced are corrected toward QTL by the Restorative Force.
Requires rayshift compatibility, which is tied in some unspecified capacity to Unmeiryoku.
Example: conventional outbound Chaldean rayshift
- Rayshift (Servant):
Requires anchorage to Master, who would themselves be anchored to confirmation via observation from the present day.
In the circumstance that the destination is a Singularity, explicitly requires compatibility with the Singularity.
Fundamentally, Servants absent of Independent Manifestation require anchorage / yorishiro even without the context of rayshifting; and so, independent persistence as a time traveler absent of a Master is unlikely to last for long periods.
Example: outbound rayshifting of Servants from Chaldea during events
- Rayshift (Primarily Spiritual Entity):
If a transported entity that isn't inherently dependent on anchorage exceeds a certain scale, the Restorative Force is incapable of enacting a purge.
Example: inbound transport of Grails and Einzbern homunculi to Chaldea; QSH's proposed backup plan, for outbound deployment of Grails to establish Singularities in the circumstance that Chaldea is destroyed
- Rayshift (Overwriting of Lostbelt Analogue by Servant):
A Servant with the capacity to rayshift can overwrite an extant analogue within the simulated history of a Lostbelt.
Anchorage unnecessary, as the Servant's Saint Graph is annihilated.
Future of origin is eliminated, supplanted by an altered course of events.
Example: Ruler Morgan's actions in LB6
- Imaginary Submersion (Low Operational Resilience):
The time traveler is purged by the Restorative Force as of introducing deviations that are not "a matter of course" in the context of the time and location they've surfaced to.
So long as purging is avoided, the time traveler's future of origin is generally unaltered, save for miniscule changes on the order of rounding errors.
Example: 7 Days 8 Years Snow Carol
- Imaginary Submersion (High Operational Resilience):
The time traveler — said to bear sufficient Operational Resilience "to act within an Adjacent World" — is apparently capable to denying the purge of the Restorative Force and functionally changing the past.
Future of origin is eliminated, supplanted by an altered course of events. Other details unknown.
Example: ???
I would propose, based on the categories of thaumaturgical time travel I've here listed, that there's a systematic scheme that emerges from the explanations we've so far received.
Some idle speculations:
- When not explicitly specified, purging presumably occurs in the circumstance that deviations are not "a matter of course" in the context of the time and location. That is to say, in the case that rayshift is conducted without anchorage by confirmation, the purging of the Restorative Force does not initiate until a substantial deviation is introduced.
- Even outside the context of rayshifting, some manner of anchorage or confirmation may permit a resistance to the purging of the Restorative Force. Ergo, a time traveler that arrives in the past by use of Imaginary Submersion could potentially attain resistance to purging by anchorage to confirmation.
- The mechanism that permits "entities possessed of sufficient Operational Resilience" to resist the purging of the Restorative Force may be entirely identical to whatever factor of scale that permits primarily spiritual entities to do the same. That is to say, the Grails that QSH intended to rayshift into the past in the event of Chaldea's defeat would hypothetically bear the capacity to resist the purging of the Restorative Force on account that they're possessed of "sufficient Operational Resilience."
- To an observer unaware of the underlying circumstances, bearing "sufficient Operational Resilience to resist the purging of the Restorative Force" and "anchorage to confirmation via observation" may appear functionally indistinguishable.
- "Sufficient Operational Resilience to act within an Adjacent World" is perhaps so described because the entity that induces a branching of history would naturally come to subsist within an Adjacent World at the outcome of their intervention into the past.
- Even in the circumstance that a time traveler does in fact bear sufficient scale or Operational Resilience to alter history, corrections toward the pattern of events within the relevant Quantum Time-Lock should occur. This presumably accounts for the manifestation of stray Servants in Singularities that come about by the overturning of a QTL per a Grail's instantiation.
- We're told that actions resulting in deviations from established history invalidate the future of a time traveler's origin, and provokes a purging of the responsible time traveler. Perhaps this in fact applies as well to time travelers of low Operational Resilience. That is to say, it's not that time travelers of low Operational Resilience cannot change the past, but that they're incapable surviving the resulting purge. Their future of origin may be invalidated regardless, barring corrections unto QTL.
- Assuming that Restorative Force and related mechanisms apply in LB6, it's possible that the Ruler Morgan summoned by Beryl Gut was eliminated not because "the action of conveying information to her local analogue destroyed her Saint Graph," but on account that she changed the past.
With regards to the implementation of Imaginary Submersion specific to the Nautilus, a bit of a summary:
- The Nautilus encases the Landship Carolinus, which has per the adoption of Nemo's Santa Saint Graph been modified into the Terrestrial Armored Vehicle Penguin-Porter (PP) — a possible revision of the Shadow Border? As such, the control room of the Shadow Border appears to exist within the Penguin-Porter, and the Penguin-Porter seems to inherit most of the features of the Shadow Border — including the capacity for time travel.
In outward appearance, the Penguin-Porter is a visual reference to the Cicada MC 2000 from Death Stranding.
- Use of Imaginary Submersion outside the context of time travel presumably takes place at Depth 0 or Depth 1, and certainly not in excess of Depth 5, given that the Boundary of the Grand lies after this point — supposing that it's in fact an actual thing, and not just a turn of phrase to signify that Nemo believes that a Grand is likely to turn up.
- Each full-number Depth corresponds to an annual stratum (年層, lit. "year layer"), to which the manifestation of obstructions vary in manifestation. In the current event, Nemo had to defeat enemies that appeared to draw from the history of opponents Chaldea encountered in the year associated with the stratum.
- It doesn't appear that the CHALDEAS / SHEBA that existed in 2015 was capable of observing existences within the Imaginary Sea. Furthermore, Nemo's independent surfacing within the Antarctic Base Base likewise escaped notice. Note that SHEBA was previously given to substitute security cameras within the facility.
- In the current event, making use of the Paper Moon to log coordinates arrived upon in the outcome of a day's journey, the Nautilus was able to save-state its progress, and resume travel on the following day by Submerging directly to the coordinate recorded. This was necessitated by the immense pressures the Nautilus was subjected to in its navigation of the annual strata, which would threaten structural compromise absent of recovery time at the end of a day of operation. Consequently, the rate of advance was restricted to a year a day.
- Nemo's Saint Graph Resilience (霊基強度) is greater than that of his crew members. Alongside his nature as "one who was nobody at all," this affords him a bit of resistance against compromise to the Imaginary Sea, which would normally require immunity to the Hollow / Imaginary Numbers Element, or control of such, as acquired by BB and the Foreigners. More specifically, his Saint Graph is capable of enduring 60 seconds of direct exposure to the sort of spatial turbulence come of attempting to time travel via the Imaginary Sea. Independently implementing Zero-Sail, Nemo can manage the traversal of roughly 8 years of depth in the time allotted.
- As an aside, it doesn't appear that Saint Graph Resilience is directly compared within the scenario to the Operational Resilience required to survive the purging of the Restorative Force. However, perhaps they vary proportionally, or otherwise share some correlation?
- Though the annual strata correspond to numerical "Depth," it isn't entirely clear that greater Depths correspond to an escalation of pressure, as would occur in oceans of actual water.
TL;DR — You thought that Nemo Porter was a Death Stranding reference, but in fact, the story concluded with him
performing a solo infiltration of a military base from a submarine.
