So my theory here, since all Pokémon seem to have a capacity for receptive language, is that most Pokémon can't speak human languages because they don't have the vocal structures for it. Psychics can communicate fine, because they directly communicate with their brains rather than making sounds. Ditzy can speak by mimicking a human voice box with her transformation powers. Virgilia can speak by creating an auditory illusion of her speaking no I'm not letting this go she's a chicken, I tell you, a chicken!
As far as we know, it takes a lot of work but is doable on par with learning a Move if they don't natively have the capacity. Meowth suggests most of them can learn it, its just not worth the trouble most of the time.

I don't have good artwork of what this might be referring to on hand and I'm not scrubbing manga panels in case it's there, but this is probably a uniform from a previous conflict Leaf was involved in as a Ranger.
I pictured it as being similar to the Ranger look in the XY games

I have several questions about the move Self Destruct.
Can operate on varying levels of strength and lethality. Some Selfdestructs can basically just be a strong attack with large recoil, others can live up to the moves name and potential. Depends on what the Pokemon using it wants.

Boy yeah having a healer for the team would be really handy wouldn't it.
I know that this is saltposting rhetoric here but God it must have SUCKED to be a trainer before Ditto cells, having to actually wait and heal from injuries with stuff like physical therapy for Pokemon must have been rough

Look, I may be on team Erika, but this is definitely thematic fuel for team Elise, ngl.
She definitely thinks she looks good in the uniform.
"Welcome to your first day as a Ranger, how are you feeling?" Elise asks you while doing her morning stretches, her Honedge in a sheath attached to her belt. The uniform is kinda itchy but you're not telling her that. It feels awkward on you, while Elise pulls off the red and black shorts and jumpsuit a little too well

If all my crossover theories line up, Elise owes Theodora a pony, so it works for them too.

That said, tachi were in use during the Mongol invasion of Japan, which isn't really related to the topic but now I want to play Ghost of Tsushima.

She definitely thinks she looks good in the uniform.
Mariana's narration has complimented Elise's looks a few times (notably her festival fit), in addition to the general greater attention she pays to describing other women, so I think the takeaway is that we're not immune to Protag Swag just because we have our own version.

I've seen one shiny in all of Paldea so far, and it was a god damned Hoppip. (I blame this thread).

I found a shiny Hoppip before I even made it to the first town, it was great.

Jenkins...okay no you know what shooting cans or whatever is a perfectly respectable pasttime when you live on the literal open range. Mariana's just got a surprisingly eclectic number of weapon and fighting skills for a walking anxiety attack.

Mariana shooting at range, Elise taking the frontliner role. It's going to happen, mark my words.

Though it's probably going to be pretty interesting to see how people react to Mariana, noted cutie and anxious mess, suddenly being way more competent at violence than anything they've seen would suggest her to be capable of. Not to the extent of someone who's trained at this, like Elise, but way more than the average trainer might expect. If we're lucky, it would be something like being a Big Damn Hero in defense of Erika, because it might flip even more lesbian switches in the poor girl's brain that Mariana hasn't already been pushing at. If we're unlucky, there's going to be a lot of blood involved.

Though I guess either scenario kinda depends on exactly how the psychic brain trauma interacts with violence/death in progress? I imagine we'll get a few clues by the end of the week.

Also I don't understand why Braixen, a Fire/Psychic-type, needs a wand that's specifically Grass-aligned. I suppose it uses it as a torch, and Grass means it's both flammable and resilient?

I would say it's pretty straightforward of an explanation - it's not that the stick has to be strongly Grass-aligned, but rather that to evolve, a Fennekin needs a stick that is able to channel their energy properly. The grass-type alignment here is Theodora's specific interest, as I expect it'll allow Braixen (later Delphox) to use Grass-type moves they might not be able to otherwise. A "Wand of Seed Bomb" or similar.

Or I could be way off! Hard to say.

Elise, meanwhile, is getting attached to Rin, who is probably draining her life force. Girl.

Calming yourself down and clearing your mind right before combat helps when your sword can literally drain those things away.

...I probably should hope that's not something that's going on here.

We have one. It's called Mariana with a bunch of potions.

The Final Fantasy Tactics player in me insists that Chemist is totally a valid healer job. And you need to level it a bit to unlock White Mage anyhow.

First of all, it establishes a parallel with the initial relationship-defining meet-cute of Crow and Rean, with the former hustling the latter out of a 50 mira coin with a magic trick, which confirms to my conspiracy-addled mind an entire world of speculation on Theodora's character that I'll get into later, perhaps after Arvis narrates her saving our ass in the woods. Again.
If Theodora is a combination of Crow and Alisa, there really is no hope of her losing the Elisebowl. It's over. TeraProtagonistShipping is dead.

Erika must be so happy.

(looks it up)

Yeah, okay. That's a pretty good look.
Yeah, the non-Ranger game Rangers have a much nicer look than the Ranger game versions. The Orange/Red and Black just works much better than the Red, Yellow, White and Black/Blue.

Could do without the wilderness focused trainer class having some amount of bare legs on all of the women. But hey, at least the guys are sensible enough to wear full pants outside of the Ranger games.

I found a shiny Hoppip before I even made it to the first town, it was great.
Mine showed up after the main plot while I was going back into the zen state of EV training. Fairly certain it heard me talking shit about Jumpluff a month ago.

As someone on Team Elisadora even if I'm still ambivalent on Mariana's relationships, I do have to point out that we're not completely out of the running as someone with traits from Towa (personality) and Laura (physically), and while nothing is touching CrowRean in popularity, they ARE up there as far as the het ships go.

Side note but while we're talking about Cold Steel counterparts, I do like that the thread decided they like Erika. Falcom has spent a decade trying to convince fans to care about Emma as much as the rest of the OG Class VII girls to mixed results. Of course Erika has an entirely different personality and is simply probably playing the same plot role, which probably helps.

We've also get a little bit of Alisa, since Mariana is a decent archer according to herself. (And if Mariana is saying something good about herself, you know she's amazing.)

We've still got time for the fumble of the century when it's finally time for Erika to shine as the person who knows all the mysterious truths and her Carbink steals the job right out from under her.

What do people have against Emma? I quite liked her.

As long as it doesn't have a Pokégirl form, it's okay.

Since we're talking counterparts: Are there any for Alfin, Cedric and Olivier? Because the princess is apparently around 40, which doesn't really track.
Also, hopefully that means she's not in the Elisebowl, because no way Alfin could have resisted a combination of both Elise and Rean.

I like Emma also, but I also like a nice plain bagel with cream cheese on occasion. Her only real issue as a character is that in comparison to the other party members and really, Trails leads in general she's just kinda there. She's a nice girl who's involved in vaguely sinister subplots but doesn't really act much on them herself (and they end up being not terribly sinister by comparison to others). Even in her own personal subplot, the NPCs are more interesting in their gimmicks and personalities and what they actually contribute to the stories.

Tbh it's not just her, Gaius has the same problem on the guys' side. There's like one twist in his personal story that doesn't come until like CS3 and other than that he's just there being the cool supportive bro. He doesn't even have any major angst other than being a bit of a fish out of water, hence him being probably the least remembered dude of the CS1 cast outside of "talks about the wind a lot".

Both 10/10 people, just not really messy enough to be fandom attention-getters in a field as packed as Trails, you know?

"eccentric Prince Carlos" got namedropped very early on as the patron who brought Arc-en-Ciel in as a performance at the school auditorium some time in the past, and I'd bet a fair amount of money that that's our Olivert.

Meanwhile, Crown Princess Arcadia is closer to Eugen III in age than the elderly Emperor Eugene is, and I don't know if she's going to be playing Eugen's role, Cedric's, or if Arvis is cooking something completely different with the imperial family here. If there's an Alfin counterpart, I don't think we've met her yet.

On the subject of Trails Girls that are lacking, my issue was never Emma.

It was Alisa that was always just nothing to me. Everything about her arc is just stale and boring to me.

Sharon is literally the only worthwhile part of her inclusion in the series for me.

I like Alisa because I like it when tsundere archetypes have a reason to be Like That. Admittedly, I'm not the least bit a fan of her implementation in the first game, hence my complaining about the prologue and chapter 1 every chance I get, but she grew on me a lot.

My issue was never disliking her because she's tsundere.

I just think she, and everything surrounding her, is generally just boring and 1 dimensional, with Sharon being literally the only bright spot.

Could be worse. Could be Elie.

Girl couldn't even make her best friend turning out to be an evil mastermind interesting.

Not sure if being able to intimidate a 1000-year-old vampire to eat their vegetables can be considered 'plain'.:V
I hope it doesn't take three games for Erika to start threatening her Diancie grandma into eating the nutritious rocks.

Or whatever the heck Diancie and Carbink would eat.

See, that's the thing: her competition for attention in her own area of plot relevance is a thousand year old vampire.

Emma would have made a great main character tbh, in that she works best as a contrast to other people's craziness (notably two of the three pre-Cold Steel Trails protagonists, while definitely having their own inner issues and struggles and personality spice, were definitely "the normal ones" of their respective casts, as opposed to Rean, Van, or Kevin, who are...not). I'd be sad that we didn't pick Fede except we DID pick Andosin, and like I said, Gaius had similar issues. Possibly more so in that the Nord Highlands barely HAD a subplot, unlike Eryn.

This isn't the space to argue about this, so I'll just say I disagree subjectively. Her role getting split in this AU between a Pokémon rival so good we adopted her as our own rival and an homage to possibly the most interesting character in all of fiction means we don't really need to worry about it either.

It's also not the space for me to leap to Elie's defense and I'd have to separate what I like about her character from my personal gender goals first anyway.

Long have I said that Emma is basically an Otome Protagonist. She's the smart girl with special powers from a tiny village who gets into the most prestigious academy in the land where she meets the ice prince, the hotheaded academic rival, the artistic foreigner, the shy musician, and the pile of issues precision engineered to activate the "I can fix him" receptors in as many nearby women as possible.

Pity Aidios got the genre settings wrong and she was stuck in a JRPG with Mecha.

*Looks at the thread devolving into Trails girls talks and quirks, remmebers that the only experience with trails girls are the Sky gang* yup, thats a lot of words alright.

Don't worry, warriors of the Elisebowl, as soon as we start hinting at our tragic backstory or show weakness within hearing range of Elise she'll come running (to get those Social Links) to comfort us. Right now we're just got some gap moe and an older sister vibe to us. We need that angst before the players get interested.
