Field Exercise I: Friday II "Badajoz Ruins"
CW: Mention and Depiction of Blood, Death (Human and Pokemon) and Gore. Reader discretion is advised

"This has gotten rather complicated, hasn't it?" Theodora asks, looking at your entourage. Your only response is to hum in agreement.

After convincing Miss Leaf to join your group, you rendezvoused with the other half of Group 1. They'd bought the Potions, Balms, Bandages, Rope and all other sorts of items that Leaf was insistent you bring.

Your class was about to head for the ruins when a new person joined at their and Poppy's insistence.

"C'mon, why don't you tell me more about yourself?" First-Lieutenant Cassandra teases your instructor. The latter has the most forced-on smile you've ever seen.

You're not really used to Miss Leaf not being her energetic self, though it seems only you and Theodora can tell that Miss Leaf's expression is fake.

Elise is at the front of your group's little procession. She has all of her Pokemon out, even Murkrow who's flying up above keeping an eye out. Rin is at her side as ever, and the Charcadet is leading her and thus the rest of you to where the poacher's hideout is.

It's a similar path to one you traversed a few days ago. The difference this time is that it's quiet. The typical noise of wild Pokemon that you've grown accustomed to is significantly lessened, likely due to the ongoing Wild Hunt.

The kids were in the middle, both of them in conversation with one another over their respective Steel-type Pokemon. Argy seems to like Poppy's attention while Pinky was squirming uncomfortably in Ostia's grasp.

"You're carrying her wrong. C'mon, I'll show you," you say to Ostia, before briefly adjusting the bag you're carrying so you can help your friend carry the Tinkatink. You adjust their posture, pointing out where they should place their arms to carry a Pokemon the size of Tinkatink. Ostia thanks you as the Fairy-type now looks more comfortable being carried.

Looking back behind towards the adults once again, Miss Leaf seems to be doing her best to ignore the RMP officer, who's trying to pry a response from your Instructor. Sharing one last look with Theodora, who rolls her eyes, you go on ahead to catch up with Elise, wanting to speak with her.

"How're you doing, Elise?" you ask her, still slightly worried for your friend after earlier.

"Oh, I'll be fine. Thea already double-checked my injury earlier," Elise brushes you off while looking at her hand, the one she cut and used to shake hands with the Charcadet. It's been bandaged now and from what Theodora told you, it was instantly cauterized. Still, you can't help but be worried for your friend, not just physically but also mentally.

You briefly try to look for Murkrow but he's up above in the sky on the lookout, occasionally squawking to provide directions and intel to Elise.

"How are you and Murkrow?" you pry, catching the brief grimace that flashes on Elise's face.

"It's…not great. I don't think he'll respect me as his trainer at this point and I don't blame him." Yeesh, it's that bad? "I told him about Charcadet's plight, and he's willing to help at least."

"So what're you planning to do?" you ask Elise.

"I…don't know. Thea says she has an idea, but—" Elise is interrupted by the sounds of Murkrows caws as he circles above in the air, agitated at something to the north of you.

Charcadet comes to a stop as they turn around to face Elise, pantomiming something at her. Elise's face tightens.

"The Wild Hunt is near, we'll have to divert our path if we want to avoid them." Before you can say anything, Instructor Leaf moves past you towards the head of the group, before turning around to face all of you.

"That's good work, Elise. I'll take it from here. Everyone, pay attention! Wild Hunts are volatile things. They only crop up when things have gotten to the point where local Pokemon have no choice but to fight." Miss Leaf glares at Miss Cassandra as she says that last part. "As such, the Pokemon involved are tense and are on an absolute hair trigger. We're going to be skirting the edges to avoid getting into an unnecessary fight while still reaching our destination." As she finishes she grabs a Pokeball off of her belt. She sends out Wiggly just as Missy floats out of Elise's shadow.

"I suggest sending out the Pokemon you want to use now, while you still have the time."

As you grab your own Pokeballs, you hear the others release their own Pokemon. Aside from the familiar faces of the Pokemon of your classmates, Miss Cassandra has sent out an Orbeetle and a Numel

You send out your own team, having already briefed all of them on the situation. Each of them quickly takes their place; Roland wraps himself around your neck, Renne holds up her paws for you to lift her up and Ruby digs into the ground, only her head being visible.

"Um, Miss Poppy?" Cassandra says to Poppy, who is busy gushing over how shiny Leo is.

"Oh, right. Skaro~!" Poppy calls out. Faster than you could see an indistinct shape descends from on high, landing next to the girl without a sound. You've seen a handful of Skarmory before, both wild and trainer-owned, but this Skarmory is one of the largest you've seen. Easily towering over every other person here.

Poppy approaches the Steel-type, who leans down to nuzzle her affectionately.

"If everyone is done, let's get a move-on," Miss Leaf looks completely unphased by the Skarmory's arrival.

Continuing on your trek towards the ruins, your new path takes you through the cliffs and edges of the heights, Renne and Cass' Orbeetle using their telekinesis to make sure no one falls down and gets hurt. From this high up you can see the vast forest that surrounds the Heights and goes up to the hills that make up the ruins of Badajoz.

It also lets you see the faraway shapes of the Wild Hunt on the move. Even from afar you can see the numerous Pokemon that made up the horde, from the familiar Bug-Types your class has been dealing with, to the odd Ursaring carrying Pinecos and Foongus on their backs. Groups of Deerlings led by Sawsbuck with some Pawniards even riding on the back of some of them. There were also a number of flying type Pokemon overhead, a couple dozen or so, all of them carrying a Pokemon like Tandemaus on their backs.

"Wow…" Ostia looks utterly amazed at the sight they're seeing. That's probably the first time they're seeing so many Pokemon in one place.

"Majestic sight, isn't it? It's a shame you rarely ever get to see them without something going wrong," Leaf says, a shadow of a smile on her lips. All of you just take a moment to stop and admire the veritable legion of Pokemon before moving on. A splotch of color and noise in a near endless canvas of green.

As your group makes your way closer towards the ruins, led by Charcadet, you all begin to hear a strange noise. It's faint, but it seems to be a long droning sound.

'This noise…It's…!' Renne's fear and panic is palpable. You hug her tighter to try and comfort the Espurr.

"Oh shit," Leaf suddenly swears.

What looks like a black cloud begins to emerge from the ruins of Badajoz. It flies into the air, a great formless mass surrounding the ruins like a miasma.

"What is that?" Theodora asks the question on everyone's mind. Instructor Leaf pulls out a pair of binoculars from her pack to get a clearer look of the cloud.

"Woobats. So that's what the Gigaremo's were for." You look on in shock. If those are all Woobats then they have to number in the hundreds. But, sure enough, as the swarm begins to approach the Wild Hunt you're able to see the blue fur of the Woobats.

The black cloud descends on the Wild Hunt's position in a cacophony of cries and shrieks. A near deafening scream that reaches even to your group.

A battle ensues as the Woobats attack with fang and wing the numerous Pokemon assembled down in the forest below. The sheer weight in numbers overwhelms the Wild Hunt's much smaller cadre of flying Pokemon. The various Bug Pokemon fight back against the assault, webs and rocks shooting off into the air, small detonations from Pineco's being tossed at the larger concentrations, thick vines and roots emerging from the ground to swat away the Woobats.

At the head of the swarm is a Swoobat, flying across the battlefield, its shrieks crushing and knocking Pokemon left and right, slamming its wings and itself against anyone that got close. Then; a familiar black chitinous form emerges from the masses of Pokemon and slams into the Swoobat, engaging them.

"Something's off, the Woobats are usually more coordinated than this. Here, they're just randomly throwing themselves against the other Pokemon," Lieutenant Cassandra observes as she looks at the ongoing battle with her own set of small binoculars.

"That's how Gigaremo's work. Mass Pokemon mind-control. A lot of the ones swirling around in the black market were made after Dim Sun went under. Most of them are just Miniremos but there were some of the larger variants. They're much weaker than the originals, only capable of giving out simple commands. Look." Instructor Leaf hands you her binoculars and then points at a pair of Woobats fighting a squadron of Tarountula.

Even from afar it's clear just how much more coordinated the Bug-types are in comparison to their opponent. The two Woobats are constantly on the attack, but are easily being outmaneuvered by the smaller Tarountulas, led around and away from each and towards either web traps or onto the path of larger Pokemon. You wince as a Woobat is led into the path of an Ursaring's swing, the strike knocking them onto the dirt with a heavy thud.

But despite their reckless assault, the sheer weight of numbers that the Woobats brought are taking its toll on the Wild Hunt. Of the aerial contingent only a few remain, clustered together defending Spidops, who's using its webs to entangle Woobats together and retrieve its fallen allies.

The forest floor is littered with the unconscious and…dead bodies of Woobats and other Pokemon in various states of injury and mutilation. You hand Instructor Leaf her binoculars back, feeling queasy just looking. Roland rubs his head against yours, trying to comfort you.

"...Can't we do something to help?" Theodora speaks up, looking at the battle using Cassandra's binoculars.

"I have an idea, Skaro!" Poppy all but yells, and once more with barely any sound the Skarmory descends right next to her. There's a look on Skarmory's face, like they're questioning Poppy's decision.

"C'mon, ple~ase! Will you help them?" Poppy pleads with her Pokemon. Skarmory sighs before taking off.

Near instantly, the Steel-type grabs the Swoobat still embroiled in battle with Lokix with its talons. With a powerful beat of its wings, Skarmory lifts the Psychic-type further up into the air, uncaring and unaffected by its struggles and efforts to dislodge itself from Skarmory's grasp. Then, it dives.

Skamory slams the Swoobat onto the ground with an impact that causes the other Pokemon around to stagger, then pulls them back up with talons, and begins repeatedly slamming them down onto the dirt again. All around the Steel-type the Woobats try to attack them, but their efforts are to no avail. Skarmory is simply too strong for their attacks to have any effect.

The Wild Hunt quickly recovers from Skarmory's intervention. The various Pokemon seize the chance to retrieve their fallen and wounded, carrying them to the back of the procession away from the fighting. Some even use the opportunity to strike at the distracted Woobats.

Finally, Swoobat ceases struggling and shrieking, its wings going slack as Skarmory finally releases them. With the head of the swarm gone, what little coordination that remained with the Woobats disintegrate, and without rhyme or reason they begin to attack anything and everything that approaches them, even other Woobats.

Lokix stares at Skarmory, its stance cautious but signifying that it's ready to battle if need be. Skarmory scoffs before returning towards your group.

Instructor Leaf sighs before speaking. "Well, so much for them not expecting us. If the poachers could sic the Woobats at the Wild Hunt, they must have some way to keep an eye on things." She picks up her pack, which she'd laid down to watch the battle, before motioning for the rest of your group to follow.

"You've a good heart, kid. But come on, we'll have to hurry," Instructor Leaf says to Poppy's delight. Looking at the Wild Hunt one last time, you see the Pokemon still standing begin to attend to their wounded, shuffling around to fill now emptied formations and slowly but surely, continue their march towards the ruins.

Following your initial incursion to its ruins, you'd done a little bit of research on Badajoz. It wasn't much, just enough to start a conversation with Erika and Theodora, but you still remember a little of what you read. Badajoz was one of the oldest real settlements in Paldea. Archeological records claim that some parts of it go back as far as before the Neolithic Collapse, also known as the Cataclysm if you're religious.

During a discussion with Theodora, she said that the oldest inhabitants of Badajoz made their homes within the caves of the hills and plateau that it was situated upon. Eventually Badajoz proper began to be established and those old caves and alcoves were abandoned, until in time Pokemon came to inhabit them.

Charcadet led your group to an abandoned mine shaft, partially collapsed, that according to her leads to the wider network of tunnels and caves that the poachers use as a base. Said entrance is found in an out of the way clearing, difficult to spot from above, or so Murkrow claims.

Right now, you're preparing yourself, physically and mentally, for the challenge ahead. Instructor Leaf told Theodora to buy all of you a number of hardhats with flashlights attached to them, alongside other sorts of spelunking gear. While the rest of you were getting ready, Instructor Lead sent Missy ahead to scout and check if the path was safe.

You put and then strap a little helmet on Renne, who wordlessly complains about it messing up her fur. Her barriers are gonna be important for your group, cause while Orbeetle can set up screens it's better to be safe than sorry according to Miss Cassandra. Roland snickers as you finish putting the helmet on Renne. It's a little large for her, making it so that her eyes are barely visible from beneath the helmet. It's kind of cute.

"Sorry we don't have any smaller sizes," you say, causing Renne to shake her head.

'It's a bother but little can be done. I can sense Ruby returning soon, she doesn't seem worried.' Right; while the entrance is partially collapsed, it does have an opening that's small enough for Ruby to go through. So with the adults' approval, you sent her to check on the stability of the tunnel itself and see if Miss Cassandra's Numel can widen the path without causing a cave in.

'But nevermind me human, are you going to be okay?' Renne suddenly asks, causing you to blink. What brought this about? 'My senses say you are nervous, even more so than usual.'

"Of course I'm nervous, why wouldn't I be?" You don't mention the growing sense of unease you've had for the whole day since it's not really relevant.

At that Renne stares first at you then at Roland who looks back at her. The two Pokemon share a wordless conversation that you're not privy to. It's Renne that breaks eye-contact first as the Espurr looks away and turns to face elsewhere. Following her gaze leads you towards Instructor Leaf, who's in a conversation with Elise. Suddenly she looks around before snapping her head towards you and Renne.

'Maybe you'll listen to her.' Renne says before wandering away. Roland disentangles himself from your neck as well, floating off to follow Renne. What!?

You're left in shock as the realization that your Pokemon has colluded to get you into a conversation with Miss Leaf. As she finally draws near, there's an expectant and almost worried expression on her face as she looks at you.

"Right, I don't want to assume, but you know what's coming, don't you?" Instructor Leaf leans to face you, as you look down at your hands.

"We're gonna fight the poachers, aren't we?" you say in a low voice, nervous of where the conversation is going.

"This isn't going to be a regular fight between Pokemon. They can and will target you, and they'll likely be targeted in return and they'll fight like it. Are you okay with seeing people get hurt, even if you think they deserve it? This isn't an intellectual question but an emotional one." You just listen, unable to respond. "You don't have to tell me your answer, but I need you to ask yourself that, alright?"

As Miss Leaf steps away to give you some space, you ask yourself that question. Will I be okay seeing people get hurt, potentially even trying to hurt others, both humans and Pokemon? There's a difference between this and the regulated battling that you're used to. A force that can crack stone and shatter earth can do the same to flesh and bone just as easily.

You look over to Elise, who has a serious look on her face. She has Rin held outstretched, ribbon wrapped around her arm, and she's practicing what looks to be a breathing exercise. Murkrow is perched on a tree, grooming himself. The Charcadet that she's bonded with is copying the stances of your friend, the Pokemon's nervousness clear even to you.

You look over to Theodora who seems deep in thought, even as she's brushing Sharon's tail. The Braixen is in conversation with Leo, who's sharpening their blade with a whetstone. She has a far-off look, whispering something under her breath like she's calculating or thinking of something.

Finally you look at Ostia, who looks almost sullen. There's nervousness in them, yes, but there's something more, something you can't understand. Argy and Poly stand close to them, as if shielding your friend from the rest of the group. You've tried asking them what's wrong but they're evasive, only responding that they're just nervous. You can tell it's more than that, but you don't wanna push the issue, not yet at least.

You have your answer.

For now, you'll have to just not dwell on it. The poachers have made their choices. With them are who knows how many Pokemon that would be subject to a who-know's what fate if they aren't rescued. Just thinking of that makes the cold pit of anger return. You're not sure if you're ready to see real violence again, but you can't tolerate the alternative.

"Thank you, Miss Leaf. I understand," you finally say in response to your instructor, who only nods in return.

Looking around, you spot your Pokemon together. Ruby's returned, and is in a conversation with both Roland and Renne. At least they're getting along now. Ruby spots you as you approach, the two other Pokemon turning to face you.

'I hope the conversation was fruitful?' Renne asks while Roland chirps at you in a way that you've learned tells you he's worried.

"It was. Thanks, you two." Renne looks away embarrassed as Roland wraps himself back around your neck. The Espurr yelps in surprise as Ruby pushes her towards you; you pick Renne up in your arms, giggling all the while.

"How were the tunnels, Ruby?" you ask the Drilbur, with Renne translating between the two of you.

'According to her, the cave-ins are induced in nature. The tunnels are structurally sound and…Mr. Numy could make them traversable with ease.' Renne's stoic facade cracked as exasperation briefly flashed on her face before disappearing. From how Ruby is snickering, it seems intentional.

"Thank you, Ruby. I'll tell the others." The Drilbur yips in delight and follows after you as you head towards Miss Leaf and Cassandra to tell them the news.

The two women were arguing over something, each of their respective Pokemon (and Poppy) standing awkwardly beside them letting the both of them just go at it. It's Poppy who first notices your approach. The sheer relief in her face is palpable.

"...Look, I'm their teacher and I'm the stronger trainer. Missy's already scouted out the tunnels closest to this entrance and Wiggly can handle whatever Bragg and his minions can at her." You catch Miss Leaf's side of the conversation as you get near enough to hear her. Her irritation is clear just from her voice and tone.

Wiggly waves at you from behind your instructor and you send a small wave back. You spot Missy's head poking out of Leaf's shadow, the ghost looking positively bored.

"Poppy's involvement in this means it's official League business, and Lady Rika assigned me to make sure it goes well." In contrast to Miss Leaf, Cassandra is stern, and you can almost sense a hint of condescension in her voice as she's speaking. Her own Pokemon are the very model of stoic calmness, with the exception of Numel who's being pestered by Ruby.

A cute little scene plays out where the Numel blows soot in Ruby's face, covering them almost entirely. Ruby takes it in stride and pokes her tongue out at the Fire-type, who, if your eyes aren't deceiving you, almost seems like they're chuckling.

"You keep calling her Lady. I thought the only noble in the Elite Four was Lord Hassel? Was she made a peer recently?" Theodora interrupts as she approaches the two women with the other two members of Group 1 and their Pokemon in tow. Cassandra's face looks like it just bit into something sour as Theodora finishes her question.

"I…am merely addressing L—Rika with the respect she deserves." Cassandra stutters out in response as a pitying look forms on Instructor Leaf's, Theodora's and surprisingly Poppy's faces. "F-fine! You're in charge, Ranger!" Cassandra grumbles out, her face flush in embarrassment. The RMP officer walks over to a tree next to Poppy to sulk, the small child patting them on the shoulder all the while.

Instructor Leaf looks like she's actively trying to hold herself back from laughing, a snicker almost making it through before her self control finally asserts itself once more. Looking much more serious, Leaf faces you and your class, giving all of you a once over. "Mariana, report."

You tell her and the rest of the group what Ruby said, the Drilbur taking a moment from playing with Cassandra's Numel to wave at you as she's mentioned.

"That's good news for you, First-Lieutenant." Cassandra grumbles a bit before standing and calling her Pokemon towards her.

"I'll get started on clearing the way then. Wrap up your end soon, Ranger." As if her little episode never happened, Cassandra nods to you and the rest of your group and goes with her Pokemon to open the tunnels for all of you.

"I'm getting too old for this," Leaf mutters under her breath, to which you and your class politely ignore. "Aside from one last equipment check, I'm gonna remind you kids what you're here for."

"You're not here to fight and hunt the poachers, I can do that on my own. Leave that to me and the First-Lieutenant. You kids are here to rescue the Wild Pokemon held captive by former Trainer Associate Bragg and his co-conspirators. The safety and well-being of any Pokemon you find is your first priority. If you have to make a choice between chasing after someone and keeping yourself and a Pokemon safe, I trust that the choice is clear in that situation." Miss Leaf finishes saying.

"Yes, Ma'am," you almost shout, your voice joined by Elise and Ostia. Theodora meanwhile settles for an 'Of course.'

"Yea! Let's go!" Poppy yells, raising her fist in excitement.
Your instructor looks at all of you, a tired yet affectionate smile on her face.

As the last poacher of this group collapses onto the floor, unconscious, you take a look around the cave your group have found yourselves in. The faint but unmistakable sounds of battle further in can just barely be heard from here. Before you went in, a last minute report from Poppy's Skarmory revealed that the Wild Hunt was already besieging the ruins up above, though they were facing some difficulty apparently.

It took a decent bit for all of you to find the part of the ruins where the poachers are operating, even with Charcadet's guidance and Missy scouting ahead. When you finally did find one of the poachers on a patrol, they could barely even respond before Instructor Leaf ordered Wiggly to use Sing. A shadowy tendril from Missy destroys the walkie-talkie one of them was carrying.

This batch is the second set of poachers that's been encountered and quickly dispatched, a handful tasked with overseeing supplies and inventory from the brief glance you got at the clipboard full of documents one of them had before the whole group went down

"Class VII, detain them. I'll have one of Missy's shade's pull them out of the cave." You and your class secure the incapacitated poachers as per Leaf's instructions. Using one of the zipties Leaf had Theodora buy, you go and restrain the unconscious poacher, taking the Pokeballs attached to their belt and handing them over to Miss Cassandra.

There are a large number of crates and boxes in the cavern, some empty cages indicating the former presence of now absent prisoners, likely Pokemon. Illuminating the small cavern are a few store-bought orbal lights and electronic lanterns. Each of the poachers had a head lamp like yours with them, too.

Your Instructor picks up the clipboard, leafing through its contents before passing it over to Cassandra who reads it with a grimace.

"Yeesh, good thing we came when we did. From the looks of it they're trying to pull off an evac, and with the barriers up it'll have to be via the Tajo," Cassandra notes as she flips through the clipboard's contents.

The Tajo- a river network stretching from the southern parts of Cascaraffa Province all the way to the Eastern Paldean Sea. Its entire northern half is patrolled by the Ducal Riverine Fleet, so you have no idea how the poachers think they are gonna get away through there.

"Any hints as to where the other Pokemon are being kept?" Elise asks as Cassandra opens and empties another crate onto the floor. It's mostly canned foods and other potions. No Pokeballs yet.

"No map, but there's a checklist of other parts of the cave they were supposed to go to." The RMP Officer passes the clipboard over for your class to see. Surprisingly bureaucratic and organized for a poaching ring.

"We'll have to hurry then. Missy." Leaf's Mismagius emerges from her trainer's shadow. The Ghost-Type splits off into two, one heads deeper into the caverns while the other grabs the unconscious poachers and carries them off back the way you came.

Heading deeper, the scenery changes from rocky floors haphazardly cleared by Ground-Types typical of such caves to old paved stone, cracked and in pieces but still recognizable as explicitly manmade.

The sounds of yelling and screams further down leads your group into another large cavern, this time with more poachers. Some have their Pokemon out, desperately trying to fight off Missy. The Ghost-Type is half submerged into the floor, inky black tendrils flailing everywhere, grabbing human and Pokemon alike. Most importantly, dropped on the floor are crates of Pokeballs, and there are even some unconscious Pokemon in cages.

Another Sing takes out the humans but some of the poacher's Pokemon are able to rally and shake off the attempted status move. Nothing the rest of you couldn't handle. Cassandra's Araquanid knocks out a Graveler with a single Bubblebeam before it could even attempt to use a Rollout. Elise, using Rin as a sword, incapacitates a flagging Carkol already doozy from Wiggly's Sing. Theodora's Braixen melts the locks on a number of cages freeing the Pokemon inside, who tentatively peek out, fear clear in their expressions.

For your part, you and Ostia work together to take out a Nido pair. Both of your Psychic-Types pin the two into place, allowing Roland and Poly to assault the two Poison-Types with near impunity despite the poacher's Pokemon being stronger. The Nidorino attempts to break out of Argy's psychic grip but is beaten down by Pinky, Poppy right behind her cheering them on. The Tinkatink only ceases their beating once the Nidorino is no longer moving.

Missy approaches Leaf to whisper something to her. Whatever it is it causes your Instructor to grimace. "They were able to radio over before Missy could take out their comms. We're likely going to be expected the further we go in. Mariana and Ostia, grab the poachers' Pokeballs so you can recall their Pokemon back for safekeeping. Elise and Theodora, have Charcadet and Pawniard communicate with them." Leaf points to the clearly terrified wild Pokemon still in their cages despite being freed. There were a number of them, a few Teddiursas, a couple Budews, a handful of Fomantis and even a Treecko. "Use the potions to heal any injuries they have."

All of the wild Pokemon seemed frail and malnourished, with a variety of injuries among them. Of the Pokemon, only the lone Treecko had an expression that wasn't utterly terrified. The Wood Gecko made a trilling noise at Charcadet, the Fire-type responding through gestures and sounds of her own.

"Do you know each other?" Elise asks Charcadet, to which the Pokemon nods in response. "Could you convince them to help us? The other Pokemon are too scared to come out of their cages." As if on cue, Theodora opens one of the aforementioned cages, but rather than leave the pair of Budews shrink away from the exit, crying out in fear.

As Treecko and Charcadet continue their conversation, you and Ostia continue to recall the fainted Pokemon of the poachers, grabbing their Pokeballs and pointing them and clicking the button at each of the unconscious Pokemon to see who is stored in which. By the time you and Ostia have finished, the other two members of Group 1, through Treecko, have convinced some of the Pokemon to leave their cages and get healed with potions by Sharon and Theodora.

"I don't get it. Why keep them in cages if they have Pokeballs?" Ostia asks as they put all of the poacher's Pokeballs in a bag that Miss Casandra brought. According to her, the Pokemon will be taken into League custody.

"It's not unheard of for some clientele to specifically request abused Pokemon. The reasons vary, but a common one is to have a ready made victim to cling onto the affection their precious child will unknowingly shower them in. That and it's cheaper," Theodora explains while applying a potion to a nasty welt on a Teddiursa.

There's venom in her voice as she says those words, as well as another emotion, one you can't parse. You do catch Theodora's gaze briefly flickering to Sharon during her explanation. The Braixen returns her looks with a wistful and yet determined one of her own.

"That's psychotic!" you shout in response, to which Theodora hums in what you assume is agreement.

"Not much to be done about it. Paldea's rather decentralized nature means issues such as these are common and exploited." Theodora continues to explain. There's that unreadable emotion again, it's like something bubbling under the surface.

"Surprising sentiment coming from a Medali, but you're not wrong," The First-Lieutenant interjects, having finished a conversation with Leaf. "Poaching is a rampant issue across the region. They usually don't get as bad as this, but as a result stamping them out is hard. Most poachers are two-bit criminals moonlighting in between their day jobs."

"Yes, suppression of such things is within the duties of the RMP after the Rangers…fell out of grace," Theodora has a thin smile on her lips as she looks up at Cassandra from where she's kneeling. Next to her Elise tenses up while bandaging Treecko, her gaze briefly flickering to Theodora. A nasty frown makes its way to the officer's face, but before she could say something, she's interrupted.

"Enough," Leaf grunts, putting an end to the conversation. Cassandra rolls her eyes and goes towards Poppy, who's counting and separating the Pokeballs containing poached Pokemon. They're going to be carried and released once all of you are out safely.

"Finish up there and we can head further in. The wild Pokemon will have to come with us. They'll have to stay at the back though, with you kids watching over them. Cassandra, Poppy and I will take the lead." Leaf explains as Missy reappears next to her, having scouted further ahead. "According to Missy, there's a massive main hub cavern up ahead and she heard someone shouting orders in there, so get ready for a fight."

The mention of that brings a glimmer to Cassandra's eye and it's accompanied by an expression that promises violence. Poppy's excitement continues to grow even more if it was possible, the young girl sending out her Skarmory inside, the Steel-type immediately squawking, which Renne helpfully translates as him complaining that it's cramped.

Sharing a look between yourselves, you members of Group 1 gather together as the trio take the front. You turn to face the small crowd of Pokemon, having Renne ready to translate. While no longer as terrified as before, uncertainty and fear still run rampant through them. An explanation will go a long way to alleviating their worries.

"There's fighting up ahead, a Wild Hunt is fighting the poachers that took you from your homes. We're gonna help all of you get out of here and back to the other Pokemon above." The mention of a Wild Hunt brings a murmur of trepidation and excitement to the crowd of Pokemon, their mood slightly lifted. Of them, Treecko has emerged as some sort of impromptu leader.

With that dealt with, your now rather massive group continues further in, Cassandra's Numel reinforcing the walls and tunnels the further in you go. Just like before, shouts and screams erupted ahead, Missy going forth and spreading chaos ahead of the rest of you. The two adults in the group rush on ahead, Miss Leaf telling you and the others to maintain your pace.

Cassandra meanwhile tells Numel to stay behind to make sure a cave-in doesn't occur. The Fire-type huffs in response, but obeys his trainer. Ruby, standing on her tippy toes to reach higher, pats her Numel friend on the back to comfort them.

Charcadet makes a noise, low-pitched and hissing and spitting like a fire about to fade to embers. 'She exclaims disappointment that she has yet to encounter her family. There are a lot less cages now than when she first infiltrated,' Renne translates for you and Elise.

Treecko speaks up, the Grass-type making a noise halfway between a croak and a hiss. Whatever it is they said, it causes Charcadet to look even more crestfallen and despondent. 'That one claims that they overheard poachers talking of prioritizing certain Pokemon and leaving in the night.' You thank Renne for the translation as Elise's face scrunches up in contemplation.

"They're here somewhere, and if they're not, I'll help you find them no matter what and no matter where." Elise says to the Fire–type, who responds by pointing at your classmate's hand. Right at the bandages containing her self-inflicted injury from earlier. You sigh. Theodora really has her work cut out for her.

Finally reaching the main hub cavern, you're treated to the sight of ancient stonework, homes and buildings carved into the very walls that made up the vast cave system. Besides the orbal lamps that served as illumination for the caves, there are a series of small openings to the outside world, letting natural sunlight in.

Strewn about the cavern floor are the remnants of the poacher's operation, from crates and boxes containing supplies, to the indents on the ground where some unknown heavy machinery used to reside. Then, finally the centerpiece; the smoking wreckage of a Gigaremo, a Volcarona perched atop it spewing flames at the backs of the fleeing and panicking poachers.

The two adults and Elite Four that had gone ahead of your group are mopping up the shattered remnants of the poachers and their Pokemon. Skaro flies overhead toying with an enemy Vibrava, while down on the ground, Wiggly is piling up unconscious and asleep poachers together to be tied and arrested by your class. Finally, right by the destroyed Gigaremo, Leaf and Cassandra are standing over a stocky middle-aged man sprawled out on the cavern floor. The First-Lieutenant's Araquanid looms over him with an unconscious Breloom beneath the Bug-Type.

"Where's Bragg?" The RMP Officer all but shouts, stomping a foot down on the man's back, stopping him from crawling away. Right next to her is her Orbeetle, its eyes glowing pink, a clear threat if he was uncooperative.

"H-he's at the front of the base! He went there to fight off the Wild Hunt with some handpicked trainers!" The man's eyes are wide, moving from left to right, like he's trying to look for something.

Miss Leaf follows his gaze, leading her (and you) to look at the various tunnels leading out of the cavern. You find nothing out of the ordinary, which just worries you more, and Instructor Leaf agrees as her eyes narrow and a hand goes down to the last Pokeball on her belt.

"Where are the other Pokemon?!" Poppy asks. There's an edge to her tone incongruent with her tiny frame.

"Most of them are still around here in the side caves. But the contact had us pull out the really good ones last night because a Pokemon broke in!" Elise's grip on her tachi tightens until her knuckles are white. Theodora puts a hand on her shoulder, worry clear in her face.

"Are there any Charcadets remaining!?" Elise yells from afar, bringing everyone's attention to her from all across the cavern. The man looks at her in confusion, hesitating to respond.

"Answer her." Leaf demands while stepping closer to where the man was sprawled, her shadow a writhing mass of inky darkness.

"T-there!" The man points to one of the tunnels to the right of the cavern. "The contact wanted them and the…other contraband out, but Bragg wanted to prioritize securing an escape for us." Elise was already marching towards the tunnel by the time he finished, her Pokemon and a good chunk of the freed Wild Pokemon following after her. Looking towards Instructor Leaf, she gestures her head for all of you to follow after your classmate.

Looking back towards the interrogated poacher, Leaf's eyes narrow. "What's the other contraband and who's this contact you're talking about?"

Before the man could respond, a deafening thunderclap interrupts him. A massive lightning bolt strikes Araquanid with such intensity that it blinds and for a brief moment the only thing you could see is the Bug-Types blackened outline against an overwhelming blue light.

The light subsides, as you blink away the remaining parts from your vision, revealing in its wake the charred remnants of both Araquanid and Breloom. It's a credit to her training that Miss Cassandra manages to recall her Pokemon almost immediately; emotions of shock, horror and anger are warring on her face. The man makes a strangled and pained noise at the sight of Breloom.

You grow still, still in shock at what just transpired. The smell of flash cooked flesh wafts over the air. You resist the urge to puke, forcing the bile back down your throat.

In that silence where none could speak, the sounds of heavy footsteps are deafening, something so mundane somehow utterly terrifying to you.

"The contact would be me." A grizzled yet smug voice came from one of the stonework homes up above in the cavern.

Emerging from its shadows is a man with graying spiky blonde hair, wearing military fatigues with an overcoat on top. On the man's right and left shoulders are a Plusle and Minun respectively, both Electric-Types crackling with energy. Surrounding him are two Raichus, each a different variant, one is floating right behind him while the other is on all fours at the newcomers feet. He has more than six Pokeballs on his belt.

A barrier flashes in front of the newcomer as shadowy tendrils lash out from the ground right towards him. The psychic shield holds, the eyes of the floating Raichu behind him glowing a light blue. "Well hello to you too, Leaf. A reunion after Rime, already?" The man's tone is mocking but there is almost a hint of nostalgia in his voice.

"Surge." Instructor Leaf all but snarls, the sheer hate in her voice giving you pause. Her shadows lash out all around her, Missy half emerging from the ground, hate mirrored on her face. Wiggly leaps over to her trainer's side, the Wigglytuff's usual cheery demeanor replaced by a grim expression.

Grabbing the Pokeball on her belt, she releases the Pokemon in a beam of light onto the air. Out comes a metallic circular shell, with a head poking out from a hole on its side. Two deep green eyes and with two long antennas connected to a purple body. A Sliggoo, or something similar. Is it a variant form?

Contemplation on its nature will have to come later. Liquid metal surrounds the Pokemon, pouring out of tiny holes in its shell. With a gurgle from its mouth, the metal surrounds the Pokemon, shielding it from a massive thunderbolt coming from Surge's Raichu.

The attack hits the liquid barrier, disturbing its calm surface, and the Sliggoo retaliates by launching spikes of the metallic substance at Surge and his Pokemon. It's accompanied by a bevy of Shadow Balls and Fire Blasts from Missy and Volcarona respectively. The barrage is intercepted by the duo of Pokemon on his shoulders who leap from their perch towards the attacks. A simultaneous Discharge from both Plusle and Minun dispel the attacks—but not without cost for both Pokemon, as some of the Shadow Balls connect.

Skaro attempts to swoop down and grab one of the two Pokemon before something big, yellow and furry slams into him, knocking him away from the electric duo. It's an Electrivire, which scoops the Plusle and Minun up in a smooth motion as it comes to rest on the ground, the little Pokemon sitting up on its shoulders. With all three Pokemon together, they gather and unleash another massive lighting bolt, this one aimed towards Poppy and the adults.

Before you can yell or say anything, the earth shakes and soil flies into the air. Emerging from the ground is a massive teal fist, catching the attack and protecting Poppy and the adults. Fully rising from the ground and shadows around Poppy is a Golurk, large enough that it stood over everyone in the cavern, massive enough to easily carry a person in its hands.

A silence falls onto the battlefield as each party's opening salvos have been spent. The entire exchange from surprise attack till the end lasted less than twenty seconds.

Leaf's face is contorted in an ugly rictus of hate. Her Sliggoo lands beside her, still mostly enveloped in a case of liquid metal; using it like protruding legs to move around.

The First-Lieutenant's Pokemon have closed in around her, even Numel who leaped towards his trainer using the ground to catapult himself forward when the conflagration started. There are tears in her eyes, her hand clutched around Araquanid's Pokeball. But her gaze remains affixed on Surge.

Poppy's face was serious, any trace of the happy go-lucky child vanished as Skaro circles above and Golurk looms overhead.

"Didn't catch a good look at your new Pokemon while in Rime. Not bad at all from the looks of it. Surprised you're only adding a new member now, must still be smarting over Birth Island, huh?" Surge, with a massive grin on his face, is openly mocking your Instructor, using shared history only they were privy to. Leaf maintains her hateful stare at the man, not budging for even a moment. "Eh, what do I know, glass houses and all." Surge flexes his right arm in front of him and now that you could see it better, is it made of metal? A prosthetic?

"What are you doing here?" Venom drips from Leaf's every syllable, which only seems to make Surge's smile even wider.

"C'mon, I taught you better than this." Leaf growls at Surge's words. "Only ask questions important to the mission! Guesswork can find out why I'm here, or you can ask squealers like Moreau over there." He points at the bespectacled man the adults were interrogating earlier. Said man shrinks away from the attention brought back towards him.

'Strangling Flower—Leaf's ghost orders you to head towards the tunnel the sniveling human pointed at. She says to find the other Pokemon and leave. She and the other two will cover you from Lightning War's attention.' Renne says to you telepathically, at such speed that it almost gives you a headache.

"Guys, Missy says to head to where that person said where the other Pokemon are kept. Instructor Leaf and the others will hold him off," you whisper urgently to the other members of Class VII.

"We can't just leave them! And what about the Wild Pokemon with us?" Elise whispers next to you, gesturing towards the crowd behind your group. Morale amongst the freed Pokemon has cratered to rock bottom. Many of them are seconds from fleeing, only Treecko is able to maintain a semblance of order.

"We can have them double back towards the path we came from, either hide back in the cavern prior or go fully outside, but a lot of them aren't in any condition for such a trek." Theodora's gaze occasionally flits towards the confrontation in the main hub. Both parties there circle one another, waiting to see who makes the next move.

Treecko makes a croaking noise, which according to Renne is one agreeing with doubling back towards the prior cavern. 'Better there than being trampled underfoot, he says.' Renne translates.

Your gaze falls on Ostia, the terror clear in your friend's face. "You should go with them, Ostia. It'll be safe—"

"NO! I don't wanna be left behind! I wanna keep you safe Miss Mary, no matter what!" Ostia shouts, clear desperation in their tone. It's enough to make you falter and hesitate. "Please, Miss Mary." Unable to look at them while they're outright pleading with you, you relent.

"Okay, but stay behind me at all times, alright?" you say to them. Ostia nods in response, a small smile of relief on their face. The stress of the situation is starting to make your head hurt. You do your best to ignore it as the four of you get ready to run, even recalling some of your slower Pokemon. Roland croons around your neck, his worry clear to you.

As Treecko leads the mass of freed Pokemon back the way they came, Class VII sprints into action. The movement draws Surge's eye, interrupting his monologue, but his attention is preoccupied by a renewed assault from Miss Leaf and the others. An attempt by Electrivire to leap towards you and your friends is intercepted by Skaro slamming into them, the Steel-type having been thrown by Poppy's Golurk.

"Tsk, I hate micromanaging shit. Bragg can handle it. If that idiot can't, then I'm leaving him." You barely catch Surge's words as a wall of earth and liquid metal separates you from the ongoing battle. All sound from behind ceases, the wall thick enough to prevent any sound—and, hopefully, attacks—from making it in.

No choice but forwards then.

A slash from Rin nearly bisects the poacher's Noctowl, the strike still strong enough to knock the Pokemon out. Next to Elise, a Hypnosis from Sharon puts the poacher herself to sleep. It's a lot weaker than Wiggly's, so they'll wake up in a minute or so. You and Ostia hurry over to secure them with the last few zip ties you still have and any other makeshift restraints you can get your hands on.

Your group, having been separated from the adults, has made your way deeper into the tunnels of the poacher's hideout. Thankfully, Moreau wasn't lying and within another cavern are more Pokemon held in crates of Pokeballs and in cages, guarded by a handful of poachers. Curiously, the poachers, human and Pokemon alike, are already sporting battle injuries.

Theodora finishes spraying a bottle of potion on some of the now freed Wild Pokemon. The Wild Charcadet, now that it's healed, waddles over to the Charcadet that led your class here in the first place. There were seven remaining Charcadets in the cavern. According to Renne, it's not all of them, but finding some of her family has lifted the Pokemon's mood at the least. Relief and joy are clear in its expression, and its fire is burning once more at a full blaze.

As Elise and Theodora look over the scene with a smile on their faces, the faraway sounds of battle, the one you've learned to identify with the Wild Hunt grows louder, drawing Theodora's attention.

"By my estimate, we should be closer to that 'front' Moreau mentioned. It would explain the already injured state we had found the poachers in." Theodora points at one of the three tunnels in the cavern.

"They might have arrived at around the same time we did. We should be ready just in case more show up," Elise pulls Rin out of his sheath, the Pokemon eye is slightly glowing, his ribbon wound tightly around his trainer's arm.

'Someone is approaching. Human.' Renne warns to your group telepathically, causing all of you to prepare for battle. The Charcadets and other wild Pokemon are in no physical condition to fight. Everyone has already sent their Pokemon back out in preparation.

Elise wields Rin like a blade in her hand, with Murkrow floating over her, with some distance between them. Charcadet runs up to her, copying her stance with a makeshift sword made of flame.

Theodora watches the tunnel like a hawk, Sharon on her left and Leo on her right. The latter has been slightly despondent with no trace of their father amongst the poached Pokemon.

Ostia finishes dragging the restrained poachers to a corner of the cavern with your and Argy's help. There's a nervous but determined look on them. Your friend is sticking close by you, both of their Pokemon floating overhead. It seems the situation is serious enough that Argy hasn't even tried to start a fight with Roland.

And finally Ruby's at your feet ready to pounce, Renne is in your arms, eyes aglow with psychic energy having already set up some barriers to protect you and your class, and Roland remains wrapped around your neck, ready to pounce at any time.

Emerging from the tunnel entrance is a man that seemed to be in his mid-thirties. He's thin and ready with a clean-shaven face, hazelnut hair and dark brown eyes. He sports some cuts and bruises and on his back is a Pokemon. Slung over him, missing its tail and one arm is a Gliscor, its eyes narrowed at your group. It looks to be in severe pain.

There are a number of cracked and broken Pokeballs on the man's belt. None of them look functional- with the exception of one, clipped at the far end of his belt, separate from the rest. You've never seen a Pokeball like it before. It looks strange and metallic, covered with a black sheen.

"Bartholomew Bragg, I presume?" Theodora asks, disdain clear in her voice. The sounds of the approaching Wild Hunt are growing louder and louder behind him.

"You're under arrest, please do not resist," Elise warns the man, who narrows his and spits on the ground in response.

"Fuck it. Gliscor, cover me. I'm sending it out." Before any of you could respond, the severely wounded Ground-Type clicks its remaining good pincer as a wall of earth separates your group from the man.

Your Pokemon let loose a barrage of attacks from flames hot enough to melt stone to powerful psychic blasts. Argy and Rin burst through the crumbling stone wall as Bragg runs towards the tunnel closest to the one he came out of, the still unexplored one.
With his free hand he grabs the strange black Pokeball and throws it into the air behind him, a black beam releasing its contents into the middle of the cavern.

A burst of energy displaces the air, almost knocking you back. You reach out and grab Ostia to keep them steady. Behind you, the restrained poachers and the Wild Pokemon are pushed back to the wall. Elise jabs Rin into the floor while Sharon's telekinetic grip keeps Theodora safe. What just…

At the center of the room, standing utterly still and wreathed in dark energy, is a Vigoroth. Its eyes are wide and bloodshot red. Anger- no, hate- seems to flood the cavern, causing you to sweat and step back involuntarily.

"Is that a Shadow Pokemon—" Whatever Theodora was gonna say is interrupted by the Vigoroth leaping into the air, straight at you, its claws outstretched and ready to tear your head off. You and Ostia are pulled down onto the ground by Renne and Ruby, causing the Pokemon's attack to barely miss. All of your Pokemon prepare to fight, positioning themselves between you and the Vigoroth, but rather than turn around and attack again, the Vigoroth proceeds onwards in a straight line, flailing its arms in heavy swings.

Right towards the restrained poachers. They're all awake now and are screaming in terror right as the Vigoroth descends, tearing into them. One of them manages to scoot out of the way enough, one of the Charcadets even pulling him away from the carnage. The other two aren't as lucky.

Blood and viscera is sent flying everywhere, limbs and bones rolling across the ground as the Vigoroth continues striking down, utterly relentless in its onslaught. Jab, slash, jab, slash. A splatter of blood hits you in the face.

You can't stop yourself anymore. Your stomach heaves, and you puke the contents of your breakfast and lunch onto the cavern floor. The rest of Class VII look on, utterly horrified.

When you can puke no more, you look back up to see the Vigoroth facing you again, its lanky arms hanging limp at its side, stained red with blood. Your own blood runs cold at the sight. Jenkin's old stories about Shadow Pokemon sit at the forefront of your mind. The sounds of the oncoming Wild Hunt might as well be a world away.

VS. SHADOW VIGOROTH
VICTORY CONDITION: DECREASE VIGOROTH TO 75% HP FOR A-RANK. 50% FOR S-RANK

"Shadow Pokemon are fucking terrifying. Don't know how those Cipher fuckers made em and I don't wanna know. Things are relentless and vicious. Their guts could be sprawled out onto the dirt and missing two limbs and they'd still try to crawl towards you and bite your face off. The boys claimed they're mindless, but I know better, they fuckin love targetting humans. Prolly why Cipher likes siccing them on civvies. Saving grace is they're kinda stupid, brains too addled on whatever shit Cipher did too them to think straight. Still fuckin hit hard though."
  • Lance Corporal Jenkin Jochi (3rd Andosin Mobile Cavalry Division) on Shadow Pokemon

Welcome to your first Boss Battle.

Shadow Vigoroth is at the Fifth Badge Level and thus will receive a +75% bonus to damage dealt and -75% bonus to damage received due to the average Group 1 Strength being 2-Badge. They will also receive a +5 Initiative and Effect Rolls due to that. Since they have no Trainer they will not receive a SKLL bonus.

Due to being a Shadow Pokemon, they will receive additional HP (bringing their health to 1200) and take +25% more damage received. Due to their nature of being a Shadow Pokemon they will target the last Pokemon that dealt damage to them. Effects are additive so in summation, Vigoroth will do 75% More Damage and Take 50% Less Damage at base.

As a Shadow Pokemon, defensively Vigoroth takes Neutral from everything except Fairy, which deals Super-Effective Damage.

As a Boss Vigoroth will be able to attack/take action twice in a turn. One under Initiative rules and another attack at the turn end.

To balance this every single available Pokemon of Group 1 will be able to take an action during a turn to either attack or support their allies. Battling Pokemon are split into three: Frontline, Backline and Support.

Frontline Pokemon will be the ones in the thick of it and will be the ones primarily targeted by the Boss. If their Initiative is higher than the Boss they'll be able to intercept any attacks directed towards Backline or Support Pokemon.

Backline Pokemon will be the ones that attack the Boss from afar and such receive a bonus to Effect Rolls and a Malus to Initiative Rolls. They will also be able to do more damage to Bosses, as they focus more of their attention towards their attacks. In this instance, damage from their attacks are only decreased by 30% rather than 50%

Finally, Support Pokemon are those that can change the Battlefield or State of the Battle beyond simple attacks. From inflicting Status Ailments, to healing, and even applying a constant malus towards the Bosses Effect and Initiative Rolls. In exchange they'll only be able to attack every other turn or in some cases not at all.

Pokemon that faint during this Battle will receive 3 Wounds if they're a Frontline Pokemon and 2 Wounds if they're Backline or Support

These Roles are not solid and Pokemon can flow between them depending on the needs of the battle and of their allies.

The Current Roles of the Pokemon of Class VII
Frontline: Rin (Honedge), Argy (Beldum), Leo (Pawniard), Elise's Charcadet
Backline: Elise's Charcadet, Poly (Staryu), Elise's Murkrow, Sharon (Braixen)
Support: Sharon (Braixen), Poly (Staryu), Argy (Beldum), Elise's Murkrow

What Roles will Mariana's team take? PICK TWO FOR EACH POKEMON

[] Roland (Veil of Shadows): Roland leaps into action, fighting the Vigoroth in the very thick of it. Using his speed and ability to dive into the shadows, he'll try to outmaneuver and distract the Shadow Pokemon as best he can, closing in to land attacks at opportune moments.
  • Roland's Role will be Frontline
  • +2 to Roland's Initiative Rolls
  • Roland will prioritize Physical Attacks like Shadow Sneak, Crunch and Quick Attack
  • Roland might learn a New Move (Dragon Tail)

[] Roland (Death from Above): Roland keeps his distance, using his nascent ranged attacks to harass and pepper the much stronger Pokemon from afar. He'll do his absolute damndest to make sure that Shadow Vigoroth's attention is on him at all times, in order to give the other Pokemon some breathing room.
  • Roland's Role will be Backline
  • + 2 to Roland's Effect Rolls, No Malus to Initiative Rolls
  • Roland will prioritize Moves like Agility, Struggle Bug and Infestation
  • Roland might learn a New Move (Dragonbreath)

[] Roland (Speedy Support): Beyond just playing keep away, Roland has an arsenal of attacks that would let them support his allies in battle. From weakening Vigoroth via Will-o-Wisp, unleashing Infestations on them, and even running interference such as pushing Pokemon out of the way of attacks or helping them dodge.
  • Roland's Role will be Support
  • Roland will only be able to attack every other turn.
  • +2 to Initiative Rolls of all Frontline Pokemon Other than Roland
  • Roland will prioritize Moves like Agility, Will-o-Wisp and Infestation
  • Roland will learn and use Curse mid battle

[] Renne (Mind over Matter): Aside from the blade, Renne is probably the strongest Pokemon amongst those present in terms of raw power. She has access to a large variety of moves that can do heavy amounts of damage to the Shadow Pokemon. The situation is dire enough for it, and she has no complaints.
  • Renne's Role will be Backline
  • Renne only takes 50% More Damage and deals 5% Less Damage due to being 3rd-Badge. This is combined with the Backline bonus.
  • +2 to Effect Rolls. -2 to Initiative Rolls
  • Renne will prioritize Moves like Extrasensory, Psyshock, and Others

[] Renne (Cat Got Your Tongue): Renne is a skilled psychic, and while she isn't strong enough to simply lift Vigoroth and crush them like a bug, she is capable enough to do the next best thing. Bend bone, break limbs, cause spasms and otherwise make it as difficult as possible for the Vigoroth to fight.
  • Renne's Role will be Support
  • Renne will only be able to attack every other turn
  • Vigoroth will receive -2 to both Effect and Initiative Rolls
  • Renne only takes 50% More Damage and deals 25% Less Damage due to being 3rd-Badge.
  • Renne will prioritize Moves like Psybeam, Draining Kiss, and Others
  • Increases Bond with Renne

[] Renne (Feel No Evil): Pokemon are extremely durable and can take damage that would be lethal to a human. Mariana and the other humans on the other hand are extremely squishy in comparison. Beyond just protecting them with her barriers, Renne will make sure that in between each of Vigoroth's attacks on the Class Pokemon, there's a psychic shield interrupting it.
  • Renne's role will be Support
  • Renne will only be able to attack every other turn.
  • Renne only takes 50% More Damage and deals 25% Less Damage due to being 3rd-Badge.
  • Lose no AP next week even if Victory Conditions are not met.
  • Vigoroth will receive -3 to Effect Rolls
  • Renne will prioritize Moves like Barrier, Reflect, and Light Screen
  • Increase Bond with Renne

[] Ruby (Ironheart): Ruby is a brave girl and even if she's sad because of Mr. Numy's friend, she's going to fight. Even if she's also really scared of what's happening she's not gonna let her new crew get hurt under her watch! She'll take as much punishment as she needs to keep everyone safe, she'll just dish it back twice as hard just like Mama does!
  • Ruby's role with be Frontline
  • Ruby only takes 50% More Damage instead of 75%. Only deal 40% Less Damage instead of 50% once Ruby reaches half HP
  • -2 to Vigoroth's Effect Rolls. Gain +2 to Effect Rolls at 50% HP
  • Ruby will Prioritize Moves like Curse, Metal Claw and Spark
  • Ruby will get an idea for a custom move.

[] Ruby (Seismic Strike): Ruby is really good at digging, and with her new friends she'll get even better! And while she'll have to be careful to make sure the cave doesn't collapse, it's more important that this jerk stops trying to hurt her new crew no matter what! She'll be dizzy for a while but she has an awesome idea to stop him. If she does it right though, Mama will be so proud!
  • Ruby's role with be Frontline
  • Ruby only deals 30% Less Damage instead of 50%
  • -2 to Vigoroth's Initiative Rolls. +1 to Ruby's Initiative Rolls
  • Ruby will Prioritize Moves like Curse, Dig and Rapid Spin
  • Ruby will get an idea for a custom move

[] Ruby (A Certain Terastal Railgun): Ruby's fur is still static-y from all the power and lightning thrown around earlier. If she wanted to, she can really show this meanie a world of hurt. It's the least they deserve for scaring everyone!
  • Ruby's role will be Backline
  • Ruby only deals 30% Less Damage instead of 50%
  • +2 to Ruby's Effect Rolls. -2 to Ruby's Initiative Rolls
  • Ruby will Prioritize moves like Curse, Rock Throw, Spark
  • Ruby will get an idea for a custom move.

Alright so I'm on board for double Renne support - taking both options neutralises the bonus to effect rolls that vigoroth gets from being a 5 badge pokemon, and it means we're getting Screens Support to deal with that terrifying damage bonus.

I think at least one role for Roland should be support, given that Will-o-Wisp could get us to reduce said attack early and also allow us to get some Damage Over Time Stacked up. Percentage damage is going to be useful against this thing. Not sure what the other one should be though.

Man, if we can get Roland's Shadow Sneak effect to go off reliably, I think that'd help quite a bit. Dunno if that's going to be possible while being massively outleveled and the boss having a big bonus to initiative and effect rolls but it would be nice.

... Also does Rin being purely Frontline mean Elise is in melee with this thing?? Someone stop this madwoman

[X] Running interference
- [X] Roland (Death from Above)
- [X] Roland (Speedy Support)
- [X] Renne (Cat Got Your Tongue)
- [X] Renne (Feel No Evil)
- [X] Ruby (Ironheart)
- [X] Ruby (A Certain Terastal Railgun)

A preliminary plan focusing on status effects and annoyance from Roland, weakening body and running interference with Renne and Ruby serving as a high damage tank.

Happy Father's Day to Leaf and Surge
This is such a cruel thing to just throw in at the end aha.
What Roles will Mariana's team take? PICK TWO FOR EACH POKEMON
Two for each Pokémon was not what I was expecting but will certainly take.

I can't speak on all 6 actions but at the very least I would like:
[] Roland (Speedy Support):
[] Renne (Feel No Evil):
[] Ruby (Ironheart):

Death by 1000 status effects feels prudent and Roland can supply as much with stacking Infestation and Will-o-Wisp, Making Renne barrier is a pretty obvious choice as it reduces the negatives if we fail but also just generally supports the team, and I just really like Ironheart.

And to a lesser degree:
[] Renne (Mind over Matter):

Renne is an artillery canon, it's been joked about a couple times already. Even if it doesn't provide a Bond Point it's still setting up the pokemon who can do the most damage here, but I wont be upset with double support Renne because... I mean it's 2 bond points aha.

Oh shit, Surge being here and E4 level certainly explains why we have to deal with this shit.

And 5th Level Shadow Vigeroth is Nasty in a way that makes this a true boss battle. I'm going spend some time working through the mechanics properly but my first instinct is we need bodies in the Frontline otherwise Vigeroth will rip it to shreads.

Is there a way to take advantage of the fact the boss will attack whoever targeted them last?

Have the boss target Roland at which point he dives underground?

ILl probably vote once moratorium is over but i have a general idea of what im gonna vote for. Only thing i will say is this. DEAR ARCEUS, YVELTAL, XERNEAS, GIRATINA OR WHATEVER LEGEND WILL LISTEN! PLEASE MAY THIS VIGOROTH NOT KNOW FACADE! (Mind you it will weaken all his other moves but facade is nasty)

Holy damn. It's so much and it's all terrifying (beautiful)

As a point of order, one of Vigoroth's strongest levelup moves is Facade. I'm worried about trying to stack Status on this thing. LMAO beaten to it while I was gathering music links.

Ok, so I think we should definitely take the screen option with Renne. Maybe even diuble down on support with her. Something like... Roland Backline+Support, Renne Double Support, Ruby Frontline and Backline?

Ah fuck yeah, in that case a Will-o-wisp might not be the best idea. Infestation would still be good though - its just percentage damage, not a stat effect.

So Roland might be better going front and backline.

Yes but this is a trainer pokemon, who has been around since they were a slakoth. It's plausible that it might know the move regardless.
Yeah but it's still important to point out, because if it was a level up move on a 5th badge pokemon it'd be "Ok this pokemon 100% has Facade" but since it's a TM it's only a chance that it has Facade.

Plus... Well apparently being a shadow pokemon influences its... action making. Maybe even if it does have Facade it wont know how to use it optimally.
