I guess it's a good thing the plan with a Nemona bond action won - it combos nicely with actually winning against her for the first time! (Though Mary's complex will probably focus on the loss to Monferno lol)

Now I'm wondering if working towards a Knighthood might be a way for Mariana to find validation in a way that doesn't put her directly in competition with Nemona which wouldn't feel like giving up? We should still be trying to match her in gyms (though I'm not sure how long we'll be able to keep that up), but it could be an good option to pivot to.

A Knighthood and organisational structure probably gets in the way of going back to the Highlands to help Jenkins and our Clan tbh. Also just because we fangirled over them doesn't make it a career path.

Nemona may have the Skill, but we have the Prowess! We'll show her who the better fighter is!

Granted, "We could beat that likely somewhat disabled girl in a fight" (what with the arm brace) isn't all that great of a boast. But Mary has to take what she can get.

As far as actually being employed goes, I feel like Knighthood is probably second place to being a Ranger in terms of how much freedom you have to go off somewhere else and do some important good.

I mean, what kind of Knights would interfere with a good Quest? Why, the moment they learn we have a Quest we'd have to fight a dozen Tinkaton just so we could go forth Questing alone.

Because we may not know much about them yet. But I can say with the utmost confidence: Knights love Quests.

They'd probably be worth speaking to if Mariana gets a tinkatink. Just for advice and stuff on raising them. Maybe renting out a forge there as needed? That might be a way the order makes money to pay for their infrastructure actually, the forges can't all be in use by the order all the time.

It's probably not a great way to pay back those student loans, especially with the Paldean government undermining them, but becoming a Ranger seems like it'd be a solid fit for what we've seen of Mariana so far? Going around solving pokemon related problems and taking care of every poor little mewmew she finds would be a solid fit, plus her personal PROW would help keep her safe along the way.

Ok new end-game career, straight down the Fixer Bracer Ranger path and get Mariana a Colour rank. Fool proof nothing will stand in our way.

Ah true trails protag fashion, even when we're not a bracer we kinda nd up just doing what they do anyway.

Would a Tinkatink need a forge? I figured they just weaponsmith through sheer force of will.

They're Steel types. They speak the metals language.

No can do. Trails rules are very clear, only one Protagonist per career path.

You want the job, you'll have to go through Katerin Hitomi.

You know what none of the previous protagonists are? Knights.

I wouldn't be surprised if they can but even if that's the case I imagine having access to a forge would help a lot. Maybe without a consistent workspace that they can take their time in is part of why wild Tinkaton mostly have hammers?

I support just going down the Ranger path, I quite like them and remember playing some of those games. Unless it was a game on the 3ds in which case never played it due to not having that system.

Also neat, this has reached the 100 pages mark.

Honestly I like to think of what we're doing now is exploring options. We've been at school less than a month and we've dabbled in hardcore training for the Pokémon League, basic Ranger work, gotten a bug in our ear about the Orden de Verde, and have adopted two children. Teenage years really are the time to try all your passions and see which one sticks.

I like that honestly. Isn't that an ideal school experience (one certain type of ideal at least) in the end?

As for careers, I've currently got three on the mind, three and "go back to the Highlands and just rest" at least, but that's just a Plan Z.

1. Champion, that's just the dream of every child everywhere isn't it? Fighting to the top of the world. It would be interesting to see what kind of politicking we'd have to do in that position. Although, I'd worry about what kind of mental health crisis it would leave Mariana in in the end. Because if the stress of keeping up with Nemona doesn't do Mariana in, the real knockout blow will be when we pull what experts call "A Blue and Red scenario". In which we become Champion for approximately 10 minutes and then be defeated and dethroned by our much stronger rival. Maybe Jenkins will come in like Oak and say the reason we lost is because we suck and didn't love our pokemon enough, a classic.

2. Ranger. It's just being a Bracer, Professional JRPG people. It's something to do if we focus more on helping people rather than personal strength. Although the Paldean Ranger's may be a bit crippled right now and for the foreseeable future, that doesn't mean it can't work out, or that we can't change that ourselves. worst comes to worst we can also just leave and be a Ranger in like, Unova or something.

3. Knight. Similar to being a Ranger. Sort of a balanced option between the previous two options. It'll let us gain personal strength and also still let us help people. It's organizational structure and ideals would let Mariana pivot away from her unhealthy obsession with Nemona and gain a sense of validation. As they said up above, we already have a Quest and knights love Quests, we'd probably have volunteers to help us seal the Four for the rest of our life and then for generations after if we chose to let them in on that secret. If we gain influence over them we could sway them too our side in the inevitable civil war and future conflicts. I just think knights our cool and honestly the more I think about this the more I want to do it.

4. Anything. As said earlier, we are still young and still learning. Perhaps these are all passing fads and we'd rather do something else. Bodyguard to someone important, traveling trainer like Alder or Ash Ketchum, Gym Leader, Battle Frontier Brain, saleswoman, instructor at the academy, saleswoman, priest, whatever takes our fancy.

Sounds like a bunch of omake material to me if we ever decide to lock in a certain path.

Speaking of omakes, has anyone wanted to write one of the potential home and background combinations? Because I'm curious of what those versions of Mary would be like.

Field Exercise Informational
It was around Wednesday night that you finally got the file that Leaf was talking about. You were starting to worry about her so you asked if she was okay. She responded with a heart emoji and chibi Pikachu gif giving a thumbs up. Probably the best you're gonna get out of her, huh?

Field Exercises Mechanical Explanation:

Field Exercises take place over the course of 4 Days. You'll be spending a week starting Monday up till Saturday in the location of that Month's Field Exercise.

For Field Exercise 1: Cortondo, you'll be heading to the province on Monday and the field Exercise proper starts on Tuesday. Since Cortondo is a pretty short distance train ride away from Mesagoza you will get 2 AP to be spent on Actions during the First Day. You'll even be able to buy items, though be aware that the items available to Cortondo, a rural settlement, will be much more limited compared to Mesagoza, the largest City in the world. Each Day will operate on a similar AP System.

Groupings and Locations: Provinces are big places and a single group isn't expected to take it all on their lonesome. Classes are typically divided into two to handle different parts of the province. Since this is your first FE, you will not be able to choose who you are grouped with (I will choose for you) but you will be able to choose which of the two parts of the province you will be assigned to.

This will dictate the Tasks made available to you as well as your Pokemon Encounters. Types and species available will be dependent on the biomes available. So do not take the official Scarlet and Violet encounter lists too seriously. In Tera Steel, you can encounter wild Tepigs and Snivys in Paldea. With the latter being native to here and Kalos.

You will gain free Bond Points with the people you're grouped with, do be handed out as the Field Exercise progresses. You can still hang out with Class VII members who aren't part of your Group, it will just cost AP.

Mandatory and Optional Tasks: Every Day during the FE proper you will be given Mandatory Tasks to complete. They can range in complexity from changing light bulbs to something as complex as hunting a loose Trainer Pokemon. They will serve to further your understanding of that FE's location as well progressing the plot. Completing Mandatory Tasks will provide rewards during the Field Exercise Proper and League Points once the Field Exercise is over. They will also be the basis for your grades.

Do not worry they will not cost AP outside of specific circumstances.

Optional Task on the other hand does cost AP. Do you want that S-Rank? That high Field Exercise grade? Optional Tasks are harder but give more rewards than regular Mandatory Tasks.

Example:
[-] Day One Mandatory Tasks: Taking you from the sleepy homes of the settlement itself all the way to the edges of the provinces routes, this day's Tasks is meant to get you acquainted with the Great Imperial Breadbasket.
  • Weed Whacker: Harvest Season is still a month away, but the duty of keeping Bug and certain Grass Types away from the crops is a year long duty. All of Group 1 will do a 1d20+SKLL Roll. DC 24. Failing Roll will apply Wound but still accomplish Task
  • Crafting Cholesterol: A cavalcade of errors across the bakeries and restaurants of the town has led to multiple orders ending up in the wrong places or customers. All of Group 1 will do a 1d20+CHRM and 1d20+PROW Roll. DC 20
  • Rewards: Cash, Pokemon Materials, Poke and STAT XP

[-] How Many Students to Change a Lightbulb?: Route Lamps are a big part of human infrastructure out in the routes. Something about how certain light frequencies only achievable via orbal technology, can keep away most Wild Pokemon. While they do nothing to actually deter a truly dedicated Pokemon or a ranged attack, they still dot the paths and rails of the region. MAJOR BATTLE. Group 1 will battle multiple Pokemon that have set up near the Route Lamp. -1 AP

Other Activities:
From Challenging Gyms, to trying to catch Wild Pokemon and in Mariana's case, checking up on the Stakes, there are a number of Other Activities that can take up AP during a Day in a Field Exercise. It can even include Social Events involving Class VII members belonging to the other Group.

Example:
[-] Yo! Champ in the Makin': One of the big draws and privileges of Academy Students over regular trainers (aside from the connections and resources made available to them), is essentially getting to cut in line for Gyms during Field Exercises. And what a line it is. With Gyms opening up in August, trainers have begun to flock towards the nearest Gyms to register early and get the chance to fight the Gym Leader. (1/3) -1 AP
  • As a Mesagoza Student your application to fight a gym will be fast tracked.
  • (1/3) While you do get to schedule your Gym fight much earlier and much quicker than regular trainers. You still have to schedule it, which means getting in a line, in the first place. Will reserve 1 AP tomorrow for Gym Trainer Fight and 1 AP the day after that for Gym Leader Fight.
  • (2/3) Since this is your first Gym, you will fight a Gym Trainer to gauge your competence. 1d20+SKLL Roll. DC 18
  • (3/3) Winner of the 2018 Paldean League Conference. Managed to beat Rika and Poppy's predecessor, Old Man Tenma. Lost to Elite Four member Larry Laureano. The second youngest currently reigning Gym Leader. A proud supporter of La Primera's reformist agenda and a Bug/Normal dual Type Trainer. Katie Aracelli would like to battle. vs. GYM LEADER KATIE ARACELI. MAJOR BATTLE 2V2

[-] Going into Tall Grass: Field Exercises are an opportunity for Academy Students to go out and catch new Pokemon. With the Six Pokemon limit on all Trainers with less than 8 Badges. Your choice for your third member will be a major one and shouldn't be taken likely.
  • Will look for your third Pokemon in the part of the Province assigned to you
  • Available Pokemon species will based off of Biomes accessible to your Group

Wounds and Exhaustion: A Field Exercise is a Marathon, and while healing up in a Center is an option, that takes time. And the more banged up a Pokemon is the longer they'll be stuck in a center. Healing items are key to removing status ailments, healing Pokemon of Wounds in the field and just combatting general exhaustion from multiple fights in a row.
While HP goes back to full between Major Battles, if a Pokemon's HP goes to 25% or below. A Wound will be applied to them after battle. Representing lasting injuries and exhaustion, they go on a scale of 0-5, affecting a Pokemon's performance in battle the higher it is.
How long does a Pokemon have to stay at a Pokemon Center depending on their Wounds?
  • 1-2 Wounds: Overnight
  • 3 Wounds: One Day
  • 4 Wounds: Three Days
  • 5 Wounds: One Week

Well, Paldea is interesting here because Champion is a rank in the Paldean League, not a singular position. There's only one "Top Champion", but that's the one with an actual job, and you don't get it just by beating her. Also the Top Champion is Geeta, who is standing in for the Trails of Cold Steel character who is the normal-ending final boss of the whole quadrilogy. So I don't think we have to worry about this. In the games, Juliana and Nemona both get to be Champion, and then have an unofficial match in the square to celebrate, no position on the line, just two equals going all-out.

Fake Edit: oh shit it's an infopost. Per diem AP budget is the biggest thing here, and especially notable is that the gym process takes 3 days, and 1 of our AP for each of those days. We're probably going to want to go look for a partner the first day, then get the gym ball rolling.

Would it be correct to assume that a situation like "roll very poorly on this" is a case where Espurr would actually be willing to contribute before hitting bond 3 (which would certainly have major side effects, such as the rest of the class learning that she exists)?

She'll make sure you and your Groupmates don't get hurt, but Roland getting juggled is objectively funny in her eyes.

So the latest we can do the gym is Thursday, time before that to get healing items and search for a third member, hopefully rng is good on the encounter, maybe enough time to train/bond with the hypothetical member?

I'm thinking catch a pokemon day 1, then do the gym. Then use whatever AP we have left on either visiting Ostia if they're elsewhere or doing the Optional Tasks.

Tinkatink resides in various ruins across Paldea.
Tinkatuff lives in homes made from piles of scrap metal.
Well, there are many potential pokemon we can find, but for those TinkaCHADS out there, East Cortondo might be the place to be.

I think, I'm not a fan of becoming Top Champion. Unless we do something drastic and silly like giving the Nobles a big slap first. The idea of Andosin Native leaving home and taking charge of the Paldean Pokemon League feels like it'd be a mental strain on Mary, even excluding the strain of keeping up with Nemona. I'll have to see more of what the Top Champion role would entail first I suppose.

Well, I don't care if we go for S-Rank or not, we have to repair the Route Lamp. It's a right of passage for trails protagonists!
