ah yes, my favorite little bit of SV lore. despite the pokedex saying
This intelligent Pokémon has a very daring disposition. It knocks rocks into the sky with its hammer, aiming for flying Corviknight.
there's nothing that actually says they're successful at taking out Corviknight, with Corv's dex entry being the closest thing to confirmation and even that's a bit unclear
Corviknight can't serve as a taxi service in Paldea because the Pokémon's natural predators will attack it while it flies, endangering the customer.
though 'Natural Predators' is rather vague as to what mon it's talking about, and the reason they aren't used as taxis in Paldea is clearly the danger to the customer and not the Corviknight itself.
Here's what we know about Corviknight:

It's based on a knight from Pokémon England.

Here's what we know about Tinkaton:

It attacks Corviknight on sight
It's based on Celtic myths about fairy blacksmiths
It tries to fight Corviknight by hitting things at it golf-style

Conclusion:

Tinkaton is a (Scottish) Highlander. It's gonna on-sight the English. It's not necessarily going to win.

Also man I stayed up way too late actually beating Trails from Zero instead of just osmosing its bruh moments. I am now even happier about our rescue kitty. Slightly confusing name aside.

On the topic of "what combat style would we train a non-existent Tinkatuff" in, there's this.

new day, a new week. It just so happens today that today is the start of Naadam, the summer festival of the Andosin people. Throughout the Highlands celebrations and games are held during the midsummer. Those games are Andosin Wrestling, Pokemon riding and archery. You were a pretty decent archer if you say so yourself, sometimes even winning local competitions.

We're a decent archer and could teach our pokemon how to be. And we've got no issues hunting Steel types for the required metal...

I know the chances are incredibly low but it would be so cool if we found some leftover Dialga metal skin sheddings and turn that into a weapon that screws with time.
A Tinkaton being able to forge a weapon out of Dialga metal seems more "hero from an age of myth" level.

The absolute peak that's probably possible now is being bestowed a bit of Registeel or Heatran metal.

Listen, the only way we're getting weapon material THAT good is if we trade someone an entire 14‐part novel series that we've probably already missed two of by not talking to the entire population of Mesagoza every week.

Elise might be more on the ball but unless she's using a strategy guide I wouldn't count on it.

Yeah getting a part of the God of Time would be protagonst stuff, and that's Elise not us. We could actually have a decent chance at one of the metal Ultra Beasts since we know Ostia has one, a Kartana Katana would go hard.

She's trying OK, she's already maneuvered to start the Theodora romance early by triggering the right Arrival event, and the Festival Date rolling the Mariana+Erika encounter is fairly common and not really harmful to the route if you juggle actions around, but getting the "Mariana becomes ranger candidate" event aswell has been very unlucky and cut the money and Bond Points gain from the action in half.

Technically, we know a location of a legendary sword, but I imagine Chien-Pao would rip us to shreds. :V

We're just lucky shes going for the Route finisher Achievement for Marianna becoming Class president, would have been real bad if she just kept reloading that save till she won for mx AP

Getting a Tinkatink doesn't have to mean we become a knight. Personally I'd be fine with just the former, I think it'd go well with our family weapon.
Yeah, obviously it's not an automatic follow up to getting a tinkatink, but the impression I got was that for several voters it's the first of the two steps that are meant to follow each other.

I doubt they'd uphold the Empire. At least, not after a point.
I know nothing about the trails side of the mashup, but from what's been presented so far the knightly orders are at least meant to uphold the empire and by extension the nobility that explicitly hates us for being of the wrong ethnicity. Maybe it is likely to go another way when the plot happens, but for me at least it's not particularly attractive to join the pro establishment side of things, considering that the empire is at this very moment among other things engaged in a military occupation.

I doubt becoming an actual Knight is reasonably on the table for us, for several reasons, but it's a nice ideal regardless.
Probably not a full knight as long as we do weekly turns, since that'd take quite a while, but the option to pledge to join them in some capacity and have that be a major commitment absolutely exists:
Unlock at 4/10: You need to find the Orden de Verde's Mesagoza Chapter House. You're not obsessed, you're just really interested in the history and traditions of the Knightly Order. If you get some more merch and maybe catch a glimpse of the Knights out of it, then all the better. (Unlock the Mesagoza Chapter House as a location. There might even be a way to join them as a student. Though that will be a long-term commitment…)

I don't currently plan on having Mariana become a knight, getting the Tinkatink is absolutely mainly because Tinkaton is one of the best pokenon designs ever, with a great typing, and fills a physical niche we currently don't have.

But hey, since we're going to stumble across the chapter house anyways while exploring the city and getting those positive pokemon dens, and if we're lucky we'll have a Tinkaton on our team eventually, I wouldn't not leave becoming a knight off the table. It's a perfectly valid secondary career choice if it turns out we're not quite cut out to be Champion.

Would it be our first career choice if the Champion thing falls through? Maybe. Maybe not. But I doubt there's an issue with leaving the possibility open no?

(Not to mention if we become a knight and they do end up serving evil that's just a bonus to me tbh, that's some juicy story opportunity right there. No matter what we do if that's the case it'll be fun.)

Pale face set in a scowl. Dark blue eyes with her long blue hair styled into pigtails. A worried looking Carbink trailing after her. She's wearing a white and pink cardigan, pink skirt and black leggings seemingly stained by an unknown drink. Your attempt at saying hello is met with an irritated snarl.
So, Erika.

Erika is weird.

She's based on Plan: A Moonlit World from character creation:
[] Fede: Quaint village houses, homey cottages and the rare manor, all of them old. The newest building in the town being the one you just exited, which also doubles as the local Pokemon Center. Located on a watershed separated from the rest of Paldea by the Glaseado Mountain Range and the ever dangerous Casseroya Lake, Fede is a sleepy isolated town. Despite its small size, it is one of the oldest settlements in Paldea. Its number one export, aside from rare Fairy types to the Paldean League, is Silk and Tea of astonishing quality. Outsiders visiting often say that there is something…off about the town, a place out of step with the rest of Paldea. (-2 CharGen Points)
  • Your hometown will be Fede. It is on the spot where the Ruchbach Squadron Base is located in regular Scarlet and Violet
  • Starter choices will be Fairy, Dark and Bug Types
  • You definitely know what a Domain is…
  • You are vaguely aware of the more mysterious side of Paldea…
  • Wild and Trainer Pokemon roam freely in the town, so communicating with a Pokemon is much easier for you (+1 SKLL, Grain Trait: Poke-Whisperer: You can kinda understand Pokemon, not to the level of speech but more than most people.)
  • You have little experience with the outside world and are kinda naive, having been homeschooled for most of your life (-1 KNOW, -1 CHRM)
  • Fede is not connected by rail to the rest of Paldea, its only link to the rest of the Region is via a ship to Porto Marinada. To reach Mesagoza by the start of the School Year, you'll have to leave much earlier than you would otherwise. (There won't be a Last Minute action next update, you'll receive your starter and immediately make your way to Mesagoza.)
[] You'll Make It Far Kid: Your Sponsor? Backer? Guy who you owe your future to is calling to check up on you. You update them on what's happened and they sound proud, which is good. They say that this is just the first step if you wanna make it far. Meet up with them later for dinner with your parents. Your starter should arrive tomorrow from one of the better daycares in the province. They then go on a tangent reminiscing like all old (read: 30+) people do. You don't mind much, they sometimes drop genuinely good advice and nuggets of what you think might be government secrets. (-2 CharGen Points)
  • Starter Choices will be Rare
  • Starter Choice will have a decent Egg Move
  • You will not receive a monthly allowance. You will instead receive PokeDollars the more Badges you earn.
  • Starting funds will be in a Bank Account. Starting funds will be P 100,000
  • Big Expectations. Someone Genuinely Important either saw potential in you or owed you or your parents a huge favor. So they're pulling strings to get you enrolled. They'll handle tuition—you just have to do your best and not fuck up.
  • Access to free decent-quality Vitamins and Pokemon food regimen from the get-go
  • Allowed to increase Pokemon catch limit to 8 by the 6th Badge rather than the typical 8th Badge requirement
  • Eyes are on you due to how Genuinely Important your backer is. Being from a commoner background certainly doesn't help.
(Albeit not quite exactly, unless she's lying about her history with Cornelia, which I doubt. We also haven't heard anything about her Backer, which makes me think she's closer to the below description than a strict read of this plan).

This overall puts her background in parallel to Emma Millstein from Trails of Cold Steel, perhaps the most underappreciated ToCS1 character, if only because "busty librarian type who's secretly a spy" gets upstaged by the plethora of other people who are secretly spies in Class VII (there's so many). Emma is, put succinctly, a witch, which is one of those supernatural things that does exist in the Trails verse but most people think they're fictional, and are deeply tied into the ancient history that forms the basis for ToCS's overarching plot. She's also Usagi-tier bad at hiding it and most of the actual spy shit is done by her familiar, black cat and boomer-who-gets-mad-at-pronouns-in-bio Celine. She's also the class brain genius and is mostly characterized as being very smart and kind and, despite everything, is quite sincere about that.

Erika seems to have inherited, at the very least, a maxed KNOW stat and an origin in an isolated town with deep ties to mysticism and the hidden history of the region. Whatever's going on with the metaplot, someone in Fede knows about it even if Erika herself doesn't. Her personality, though, is very different, with her name, her face, and fragments of said personality being based on a blorbo from mine and Arvis's shows, specifically Erika Furudo from Umineko: When They Cry - Answer Arcs (they don't answer shit). Barring the......extremely complicated meta situation of Erika's backstory, she is an archetypal Mystery Novel Detective, introduced into a story that can't decide whether it's a mystery novel or not, because its actual protagonist is kinda terrible at being a detective. She is also, and I might fall out of oomfie status with Arvis for this, a fucking psychopath whose only objective is to make the other characters suffer, and without getting into too much deal is effectively the main villain of about a quarter of the overall Umineko experience. If you thought Poirot or BBC Sherlock was an asshole, wait till you see that kind of guy written as a villain on purpose.

Erika Furuwada is, needless to say, not this, instead taking a much, much more sympathetic look at someone with a great deal of genius and insight and minimal social skills who does, nonetheless, want to do right by other people even when she falls short. It's a combination that isn't "just" any one character reference, but a confluence of ideas that's only possible by mixing together two very, very different sources. (Possibly more than that, I can think of a couple of ToCS Class VII characters with foot-in-mouth syndrome). You can see the level of anxiety this combination causes her, though, and we, as Mariana, are doing a hell of a lot for her just by our combination of acknowledging her skills and forgiving her constant social faux pas, something she's barely willing to give herself. I think that's neat, and also a pretty reasonable reason for her unlucky crush on our protagonist.

The combination is also funny because, despite being a detective representing the "anti-fantasy" side of Umineko, Erika Furudo does claim the title of "Witch" - specifically "the Witch of Truth" - when she "defeats" Beatrice and Battler and...I need to stop myself before I get into a tangent. I'm the only being on Earth who thinks Episode 6 is the best part of Umineko, besides possibly unironic Erika stans.
"Yup. Erika Furuwada from Fede. Comes from a family of Kitakami refugees during the Indigo Civil War. Got the highest scores on the written entrance exams of all the first years. She's on the sponsorship program." She's the top scorer? Maybe you could convince her to tutor you for a bit tomorrow.
Aha, found Kitakami; I'd forgotten this earlier when trying to figure out Ogerpon's deal. It seems to be a sub-region or neighbor of Johto-Kanto (reasonable), although Erika being a second or third generation immigrant also means she doesn't have the whole same ancient bloodline deal as Emma. Unless she's Kieran and Carmine's cousin or something. Still a witch though, I bet. She does have the same class valedictorian deal as Emma.

"...I'm fine. Just had a bad dream." You almost don't hear her from how quietly she muttered it.
We do know (now) that she was super stressed out from critical failure at befriending/catching a Pokémon. Also given that a Fede PC could have talked to Pokémon, it's also possible that that Wingull was just a dick. I do wonder whether this was all she was stressed out about that first night, though.

"I have no idea what you mean. I wrote an essay on Tera Energy, not Type Energy, after all." Erika tersely replies. Leaf's grin gets even bigger, if it's somehow possible. Erika stares her straight in the eye and continues. "Type Energy is an outdated term from when our understanding of both Terrastalization as a phenomena and the energy that Pokemon used was incomplete. It wasn't until recently that we actually found out they were one and the same, merely in different states—"

"So are you calling Samuel Oak wrong?" Leaf cheekily replies.

"Yes." Wow. Zero hesitation.

"Terrastalization was not his field of expertise and he was operating with what he knew at the time. So yes, despite his genius, Professor Oak was wrong."

"You'd have gotten along great with the old man. Daisy would probably strangle you, though."
Wow, two Daisy Oak mentions in the same thread.

Also I gushed over Fantasy Science Nerding a bit when this came out, and I think everyone who'd be willing to read this thread has got the basic osmotic knowledge of Pokémon that I don't really have to explain this, but I just want to point out that the development here really is a kind of parallel to how historical sciences work in real life. Modern physics, for example, has come about through the parallel development of Relativity and Quantum Theory, with the major theoretical goal right now being the harmonization of those two different ways of looking at the same mechanisms at different scales. We're not quite there yet, though...
"Hmm. I'll grade it a 8/10, since the old man would've argued your ear off for not bringing up how it affects human personalities." Leaf stands up from her chair, walking over to where Erika is seated and ruffling her hair.

"Stop that! And that's overstated, Tera Energy cannot influence something if it wasn't already in a person's personality!" A~nd you're lost again.
I took this as a nod to either works where humans have Types that actually are expressions of their personality (Tempera's absolutely incredible In A World We Must Defend being one that forefronts it) or to the existence of Type specialists that tend to conform to a personality type in the game (your Hex Maniacs, Psychics, and whatnot, which likely inspired the former interpretation). It could be foreshadowing though.

Regardless, I agree with Erika in that normally, a Type is descriptive, not prescriptive, of personality. Unless someone is doing a fucky wucky with people's brains/bodies/souls, I mean. I do have Trails from Zero on the mind here.

"Come in, please take a seat. This is Cornelia. Cornelia, go practice later. We have a guest." Erika invites you in, bringing out a book from her bag and sitting on her bed. "We'll do this according to the seven main subjects of the academy; Natural Sciences, Math, History, Pokemon Studies, Battle Studies, Arts and Languages. So, let's begin."
So Erika has a Pokémon named for one of her counterpart's associates in Umineko. But Theodora has a Pokémon named for one of her counterpart's associates in ToCS. But the part of that actual character is being played by a human (or a very skilled Zoroark). With the name of one of her counterpart's associates from Umineko. I feel like a computer who's stumbled into a logic trap meant to make me explode so I'm just gonna ignore this.

Anyway, mentioned earlier but collating here: Cornelia is a secondary character from Umineko, one of Erika Furudo's assistants, a member of the Eiserne Jungfrau (an Erebonia-ass name for an organization despite most of the rest of Umineko being themed on the Italian Renaissance) and effectively a rookie angel, here to enforce DA RULEZ of mystery stories in contrast to the demons Beatrice employs to make the story more fantastical. She also may more may not be a gijinka for a roll of duct tape. Please do not ask me to explain Umineko. In any case, she's fond of magic barriers, as is Carbink, the tanky motherfucker of the Fairy type. Notably, she's the least senior of Erika's trio of named heavenly genre enforcers, which makes me think that her potential Scyther partner might represent Cornelia's overall boss, the sword-swinging reaper girl of all time...but I'll wait and see if that pans out. For all I know we'll drift into a Higurashi reference there instead.

While you feel yourself getting sucked into the sheer passion of her explanations, you also notice that she has a slight accent if she talks for too long or too passionately. It's one you've never heard of before. She seems a lot more animated during this, her body constantly on the move or making gestures, her face contorting and shifting into all sorts of expressions. You can't look away.
I'm laughing my ass off re-reading this. I'd show you why but it's mega spoilers. Arvis knows, though.

(Also it's probably a Shinwa/Kitakami accent, if she speaks it at home.)

The Terastal/Type energy as a long-going thing that Pokémon, and things made from Pokémon, could use exclusively up until the recent technological evolution is a very interesting thing we're likely to here more about. It parallels Trails in that ""magic"", that is, harnessing the elemental energy of Septium, was a known thing for over a millennium between the collapse of the Ancient Zemurian civilization and the Orbal Revolution, but it was all "hey these rocks can make fire" or "alchemy is a real thing we can do here" or "hey the Church just stole my ancient magic doohickey I don't understand because I was using it to enslave people". Industry and science making the stuff more understood and democratizing it is what gives Trails its modern feel on top of the normal fantasy tropes.

"I mean, I did, but they always just said it was 'Orre and Kanto-Johto being assholes.' Like, what even is a Cipherist?"

"I mean, that's not untrue. Cipherism is, well, it's a far-ri—wait, no, I don't want to have to explain the left-right dichotomy. It's a militaristic ideology that took over Orre around the 1960s. Their primary tenets were the denial of the personhood of Pokemon, the conquest of both Holon and Unova, the usage of Shadow Pokemon, and Orrite Supremacism. They were all-around assholes. Meanwhile, Kanto-Johto were…"

Erika trails off, seemingly lost in thought. She even stops spinning the pen in her fingers, which she does whenever she explains something.

"…they wanted to conquer all of Shinwa, their home continent. Which meant taking over Hoenn, Sinnoh and Northern Almia. Paldea and Kalos got dragged in via their alliances with Unova and Hoenn respectively, while Alola and Galar stayed neutral. The war ended when—"
This is the most deal we've gotten on the Great War.

First of all, Shinwa as the name of the continent for Pokésia. Or...just Very Large Japan, possibly. The way scaling works in Pokémon, what would be the Japanese archipelago in real life would equate to most of Western Europe at a minimum, in political significance if not actual physical area. I asked Arvis about the name and he told me he just got it from a different fic, although the "wa" part means "harmony".

Cipher (called "Shadow" in Japanese) are the villains of Pokémon Colloseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, an evil team that is much viler than normal for the franchise, focusing on Shadow Pokémon which are, effectively, Pokémon emotionally abused until they are powerful and potentially berserk. In this setting, they're even worse, being an althist Nazi movement, and were clearly trying to use Shadow Pokémon as an edge to start a campaign of continental conquest a la Nazi Germany, which paralleled World War II thanks to the involvement of allies around the world.

Kanto-Johto (which I've called "the Indigo States" in my sidestory stuff) is clearly a stand-in for Hirohito's Japan here, but Erika doesn't go into detail on it - based on other clues in this update, probably because her family is still suffering the effects of this war and the ensuing Indigo Civil War generations later.

This doesn't have a direct parallel to Trails, of course, but it does serve to create the tone and political tensions of the present world in much the same way that the real world is still heavily influenced by the results of World War II (give or take 30 years and an existential cold war between competing economic systems in between). We've seen multiple instances since in worldbuilding posts that Kanto-Johto imperialism, metastatized into ultranationalism and becoming the rallying cry of Team Rocket, is still being carried forward into the 21st century, and other budding crypto-Cipherists like Ghetsis and Actual Closeted Fascists like Lysandre are in positions of power throughout the world. In this respect, it's probably the most important worldbuilding in the thread.

Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Almia all represent parts of the Japanese archipelago. Orre is a region based on the US state of Arizona, while Unova is based loosely on the New York City metropolitan area. Very loosely. If I had to guess, for the purposes of this fic, they represent the western and easten halves of the North American continent, with the smaller region of Holon (from the Trading Card Game which I know zilch about) as a neighbor. Notably, we know that Unova is a Presidential democracy, as opposed to Paldea and Galar's confirmed monarchies, and all three of the above are in power-sharing arrangements with their respective Pokémon Leagues, whereas other regions, including the Indigo States don't have any mention of a government outside the League yet.

Also somewhat interesting is that eternal rivals Paldea and Kalos both fought on the same side of this war thanks to each of their allies getting invaded. Fun little parallel to the Allies and Comintern, I suppose, and also the only reason Jenkins could have been conceivably deployed overseas given that he lives on the Kalos-Paldea border.

It only lasted for 3 hours before Lugia arrived and pulled Shadow Lugia back to sea, putting them down. Meanwhile, Ho-oh flew over Orre, burning and scorching everything in its wake. Jenkins always talked about that part with an edge of vindictiveness.
Oh hey, "vindictive" was used in the update, that's where I got my analysis of Jenkins's tone: it's canon.

Anyway the Orrans used Shadow Lugia as a nuke, then the Gen 2 legendary birds save the day for themselves and Pokémon everywhere. The fact that this ends the war for humanity as well is probably coincidental, as far as they're concerned.

Also I'm not sure if it's canon that Lugia is a species with multiple members in the games (continuity and Legendary Pokémon are very very weird for a lot of practical reasons), but, nota bene for the Quest's setting, I suppose.

So it's you, Wiggly and Theodora's maid who actually cook. The maid doesn't seem to get along with any of the Pokemon except for Wiggly.
Fun fact that even before cooking club we were the only Class VII with cooking experience, with the possible exceptions of Elise, Atticus, and...I'm pretty sure it's established later that Ostia is a total newbie.

Anyway did you know that you can use complete omnipotent control over causality to cook a perfect pasta carbonara?

It's the next day, and apparently Leaf still isn't back. You're starting to worry, but Wiggly reassures you that she's fine and will be back within the day. You also meet Nemona and Jacinto that morning, joining you, Erika, Theodora and Manuel for breakfast.

Jacinto rushes through his meal and promptly excuses himself, saying he was going to be staying in his room and glaring at the two nobles on his way out. Nemona then invites the two nobles to battle, seemingly unaware of what just happened. Theodora declines while Manuel accepts, and so the two head off to fight at the Academy Town's Battle Arena.
I explained the deal here in Jacinto's section last time, but it's good to see his sneering contempt for the landlord class on principle is still there.

(We should hang out with him and get details).

You're also keeping an eye on Cornelia and Roland, occasionally giving instructions on their playspar. You're using this as an opportunity for Roland to practice Quick Attack by trying to hit and get past Cornelia's defenses, while Erika is having the latter gain experience in quickly raising her crystal shields or shells in order to defend herself. Erika insists that when it comes to training Pokemon, theory, while useful, is insufficient, and that nothing can replace good practice.
Roland will later lose to Cornelia in a 1v1, I assume because Erika was paying more attention to this practice bout than Mariana was.

This continues on up until lunch, when Leaf finally comes back. She looks haggard and exhausted, her hair and clothes a mess. She does, however, have a new Pokeball on her belt.
Leaf caught a new Pokémon on our first night. I don't think we know who this is actually.

"I literally don't think it's ever going to be relevant to know what a trompe-l'œil ceiling is," Erika desperately pleads with you.

Shot.

One wonders why a military academy has an entire section dedicated to Languages. According to Erika, as a department, it's closer to Foreign Studies than anything else, that its current designation is a relic of the post-Industrial Revolution opening Paldea to Shinwan traders and the need for a dedicated Diplomatic Corps. Eventually, the department grew to encompass the study of foreign cultures, not just their languages.

With this being the last topic, you both decided to take it easy. Both of you are seated on your bed, back to back with each other while reading your own books. It makes for a funny image, considering you're a head taller than her. You're currently reciting a Paldean translation of a Kantonian poem, while Erika points out where the translation differs.
It's worth noting that a lot of nobles, royals, future government workers, and aspiring engineers attend Thors, not just would-be military cadets, and the same is surely true of Mesagoza. It's a catch-all for the country's elite these days more than an army training program.

Anyway after this is a large section of Erika, noted child of immigrants, being casually racist because she has no social skills, and us working through that in a homoromantic manner. That was the emotional heart of this update and the thread swooned well enough, so I'm not gonna elaborate on it except to say that in ToCS canon, this would have taken at least a month to resolve. Good on Mariana for being socially assertive, at least when she's not stuck in a self-abnegation loop with Elise.

"So Rika wasn't kidding when she said foot-in-mouth syndrome…" Leaf says something under her breath that you don't catch. "So how do you feel about it?" She suddenly asks.
Hang on. Is Leaf nicknaming a very self-aware nerd here or is Erika's mom named Rika? Because either way it's hilarious.

I'm also extremely fucking terrified of how Trails and When They Cry references are going to harmonize if "Rika" is her older female relative.

As you go through your morning routine, barely noticing a few new unfamiliar faces during breakfast, your mind wanders. Your journey to get here, what you've done the past few days, and the people you've met. You idly return conservations with a dark-skinned girl with dark blue hair during breakfast. Apparently, she's the latest arrival for Class VII; you really didn't catch her name.
Elise was the last Class VII member we met, and the last one we learned the name of. Appropriate, for the heroine. I bet she sits second from the back next to the window, or would if Leaf let her get away with not being the center of attention. It also took me an embarassingly long time to connect this description to the option in the previous update, maybe she just has one of those faces.

Also after having been informed that hereditary appearance traits actually exist here, unlike in most anime...hoo boy we're in trouble.

Predominantly red and white, with black and gold outlines, the Academy's sigil of the Imperial Pyroar and Rapidash on the shoulders. For your bottom half, a black skirt that nearly goes to your knees, thigh highs that hug your legs and the same pair of running shoes you use everyday. A part of you still doubts that you deserve to be here, especially with how painfully obvious your academic deficiencies are. But nevertheless, here you are.
Incidentally, in Trails of Cold Steel the symbol of the Erebonian nation is the horse (in honor of their historical knights and cavalry) and one of the symbols of their royal family is the lion (for Emperor Dreichels the Lionhearted). Rapidash and Pyroar represent the same animals, but Fire-type. I wonder if Galar's is a Corviknight and Kalos's is some Grass-type, actually, given Liberl and Calvard's national symbols of a falcon and some kind of flower...wait Kalos's is obviously Floette.

They introduce themselves as Giacomo, a 2nd Year and the current Student Council President. You nod at their instructions, having already known where to go. With that done, you leave the poor guy to his task and head to Felipe Hall.
Again someone I already covered: Team Star Boss, much better DJ than he is student council president, almost assuredly not very popular in his position. Obviously this is before his fall from grace (and learning to loosen up and embrace the EDM).

Felipe Hall was constructed in the centuries after Emperor Rodrigo reunified Paldea in the aftermath of the Dark Ages. Established by academy alumni under the leadership of then Emperor Felipe Agustin Arnor around the 17th Century, it was meant to expand the Academy's curriculum into the humanities and sciences. Thus, it was built in the Rimean Baroque style that was popular during that era.
More timeline details (and establishing the Baroque movement as originating from Rime, which is geographically southeastern France here). My guess of Emperor Felipe as Philip II almost lines up with the timeline here; historical Philip II ruled Spain over the latter half of the 16th century. I might have just read too much into the name, though.

As you enter the Hall, you are met with beautifully sculpted spiraling columns that draw the eye upwards to the various religious frescoes on the ceiling, depicting scenes from the Geomantic Testaments, art of Fairy Pokemon considered near divine during that time and trompe-l'œil paintings of what people believed Xerneas' garden was supposed to look like.

Chaser.

Also: arguably the greatest density of worldbuilding in this update that's already like 60% worldbuilding by wordcount. The vast religious baroque paintings popular in 17th century architecture here depict the Generation VI Legendary Pokémon Xerneas, who is revered as a granter of eternal life and appropriately standing in for God as the creator of the Garden of Eden here. Also Fairy-types are considered semidivine here, which is probably a parallel to how Fairy is the most recent "newly added" type in Pokémon - rather than being a new thing in-universe, it's a question of recognizing something "supernatural" as in fact following the same laws as the rest of the world, like lightning or disease.

The Geomantic Church is, as stated by my previously, a parallel to the Trails series's Septian Chuch. There's no mention of an overarching deity like Zemuria's Aidios, and presumably various Legendary Pokémon are revered as deities in different parts of the world or as a whole. Although the fact that Xerneas's antlers glow many different colors, much like Aidios's holy magical phlebotinum Septium, is vaguely interesting. Also, Xerneas (life) and its balancing partners Yveltal (death) and Zygarde (balance) are the nearest "God-like" legendaries to us physically, being associated with neighboring Kalos, and likely figure greatly into the local legends and Testaments.

The Auditorium proper is massive and extravagant, intricately covered in gold filings and a trompe-l'œil ceiling. It's been host to a large number of famed opera performances, orchestras and musicians throughout the years, recent among them the world famous Portomédio Opera Company and its lead singer Dorothea Casagandra. Recently, it also hosted a performance by the Rimean Theatre Group Arc en Ciel under invite from the eccentric Prince Carlos.
Kind of a scattershot of namechecks here that I understand better now that we're farther in the quest:

Portomédio Opera Company and its lead singer Dorothea Casagandra: Probably a Trails Reference to the Heimdallr Opera and its star, the Azure Diva Vita Clotilde, who's.......very important. We'll see what the witches are up to here before I speculate. Interestingly, Porto Medio is a place in real life Portugal, which is vaguely represented by Porto Marinada in this setting. No idea if this means anything yet.

Rimean Theatre Group Arc en Ciel: Arc En Ciel is a Trails-canon stage dancing group from Crossbell, which has been translated to Rime City in this quest. Possibly the greatest dance troupe in Zemuria, led by local bisexual lunatic Ilya Platiere and notably seconded by recent recruit Rixia Mao, a girl Ilya pulled randomly out of the audience either because Ilya has an insane eye for talent or because Rixia manages to have jiggle physics in a chibi-style PSP game and Ilya has a type. I expect we'll see these guys's counterparts eventually, either in their capacity as performers or not.

eccentric Prince Carlos: This can only be additional local bisexual lunatic Prince Olivert Reise Arnor, who's kind of the thread connecting all the early arcs of Trails. He's got a complicated life story that I'll wait until we meet Carlos properly to exposit on, I'm just noticing that this one-off namedrop is probably going to be incredibly relevant later.

"Hi, Miss Mariana!" Ostia nearly shouts, causing a teacher to shush and glare at them. You glare back at the teacher. "How are you doing…" whispers Ostia to avoid getting scolded again.
We've known Ostia for five minutes and we'd throw hands with a teacher for them if at all provoked, I swear.

"Good day to all who are about to attend our august institution…"

You can not for the life of you pay attention. The topic itself has already been covered by your handbook, but there is something in how the speaker, who is apparently Deputy Director Henry Ayala, talks that just lulls you into boredom. And you're not alone in this; Ostia's dozing off and Erika spends most of the speech staring at you, likely trying to apologize again.
Vice Principal Heinrich is such a complete non-entity of a character and such a thin archetype of Asshole Vice Principal from an 80's school comedy I had to wikidive to even get this reference. There's not much to speculated here besides "classist prick".

Ayala is another Basque name, though, after the town of Ayala. Glad to see all the representation here.

"Look, it's fine, I should've expected it to happen sooner or later. I got too comfortable." Erika looks incredulous.

"Expected?! Comfortable!? That's absurd, what I did was wrong and you shouldn't just accept that as a part of life. You deserve respect! And I'd rather you never talk to me again than accept that should happen to you!" She nearly raises her voice to talking levels, getting you two glares from a teacher. The way she said that seems weird; her family is from Kitakami, aren't they?

"You say that like you're speaking from experience." She looks away before replying with a quiet voice.

"...maybe." You sigh. It's not even your first day yet, and things are already so complicated.

"Let's start over, then. My name is Mariana Ganzorig." You hold out your right hand for her to shake. It's a rather awkward position.

She takes it with her own right hand, and shakes it. "My name is Erika Furuwada." There's still an awkwardness in the air, but you could say that this is behind you two.
Your honor, even if I didn't immediately clamber aboard the first available shipping train...I still have to admit they're cute.

"…now, if I may, I'd like to say a few words in closing about this academy's illustrious history." You're snapped back to attention by the sound of a new voice speaking. You turn your gaze back towards the stage, and see a tall, thin, reedy man. He has a well-groomed mustache and wears a military uniform denoting his rank as a General of the Army.

"Mesagoza Academy was founded almost a millennia ago. Its founder was none other than the great Emperor Rodrigo, the First Champion who ended the chaos of the Dark Ages and returned prosperity to Paldea." Whereas the earlier orientation made listening difficult, there's a presence to the current speaker. One that demands attention. Even Ostia and Erika are paying attention again.

"In the last years of his reign, he opened the doors of this institution. It was to be a place where young people like yourselves could learn the Art of War and Pokemon Battle."

At the sound of the word battle, Nemona perks up and elbows Manuel to pay attention again. Manuel himself is still exhausted, having slept past midnight due to being dragged by Nemona to battle all day yesterday.

"Today, this Academy exists in a changed and continuously changing world. Paldea herself is in a position that would've been unimaginable a mere century ago. Her advances in the fields of science and war have brought new innovations and conquests for the Empire. Her leaders now guide her through uncharted waters as one of the foremost powers across the globe."

Jacinto straightens his back, pride in his country swelling in his heart. Theodora, outwardly calm, internally seethes and clenches her fist until her knuckles are white. Atticus and Elise notice, and look at their classmates with worry.

"Our mission, however, remains the same: to prepare our students to fulfill Emperor Rodrigo's famous mandate…"

Elise buries the doubt and trepidation in her heart. There is no turning back now.
Just noticed the perspective swapping here - briefly to Nemona and Manuel, and briefly to Elise, before Mariana even knows her name.

Also, as mentioned, this is probably a skinny version of Principal General Vandyck (pronounced Van Dike) of Thors Military Academy, giving quite the similar speech, and being in general the sane authority figure in Trails of Cold Steel. We can hpefully trust him. Also one of the few characters in the setting with only one name who's not using an alias. His first name is probably Principal, tbh.

"Arise , O youth, and become the foundation of the world."
I love having a logo.

Jesus fuck this was long. Maybe I'll try picking apart action descriptions on a later update but I'm going to stop at the title drop this time.

So the parallels are difficult to draw. Notably, the Stahlritter were never an order recognized by a nation. They were more of an unofficial successor to a group that was. The Eisenritter. And the Orden de Verde seem to be a mix of the two. Both were led by the same immortal badass warrior saintess whose moral framework amounts to "Generally opposed to evil, but willing to tolerate it for a greater good". Being part of an evil conspiracy, but specifically so she can try to deal with a terrible curse plaguing her nation which was worse in the long run.

The problem is that the immortal badass warrior saintess in question, Arianrhod, has seemingly been split into at least two. Ogerpon has her mask with its own healthbar and historical role. Francesca's Tinkaton has her Lance. And there's an unnamed Grandmaster of the Order. Who may or may not also be Ogerpon. So heck knows what influence she has.

As far as upholding the systems that hate us, I wouldn't assume. One member of the Stahlritter joined because her previous organisation (The Bracer Guild, which has been turned into the Rangers in this fusion) was too politically hamstrung to deal with certain well-connected criminals and Arianrhod gave zero fucks and killed one of them and Ines swooned at this vigilante stuff. Upholding the cruelties of the well connected isn't something I'd just assume they'd do.

Odds are, we won't be able to make a judgement until we learn more and we won't be asked to commit until we know enough. So really, speculation right now doesn't matter that much anyhow.

I assume the Geomantic Church has Xerneas as an overarching deity because Xerneas's signature move is Geomancy.

Dorothea Casagranda is 100% a Fire Emblem: Three Houses reference. Mixing Dorothea, young opera singer, and Manuela Casagranda, "Divine Songstress" of the Mittelfrank Opera Company.

I should really actually play XY but just...it's literally too easy to hold my attention. I hate to sound like a Geewun grognard but I just can't engage with something that holds my hand that hard.

Also I'm so used to people making Arceus God that I didn't think that someone would try monotheism with a different Pokémon. That's definitely on me though.

Ah, right, that came up before and slipped my mind in the middle of all that text. I didn't play Three Houses either, I only know Edelgard Did Nothing Wrong.

I wonder if Xerneas' "Garden of Eden" is an actual place here? More specifically, as the Lental Region?
I'm pretty certain that literally the only thing in Trails that's presented as fictional or mythical and isn't secretly real is ghosts, and as far as I know everything is secretly real in Pokémon, so you may be onto something here.

Fair. I have a crapload of time in Y, but the actual plot was mostly a chore. It was just a good game to train up some Pokémon and battle online. The difficulty can work if you turn off the Exp. Share, but I can't forgive the friend group interrupting things all the time. They hadn't quite figured out making likeable casts yet.

Never actually played X or had a Xerneas myself. So I assume I mainly remember Geomancy from online battles. Whether in the game itself or via Showdown. When the deer eats a Power Herb and instantly does Nasty Plot, Amnesia and Agility all rolled into one you remember it.

Also I'm so used to people making Arceus God that I didn't think that someone would try monotheism with a different Pokémon. That's definitely on me though.
Pokémon religion always seemed fairly regional. So I do appreciate dropping the "Everyone suddenly worships Arceus specifically" thing you see in a lot of Pokémon fics.

Most Legendary Pokémon are just that. Legendary. Cynthia can name Dialga and Palkia because she's a god-damn nerd. She has a specific, known interest in Sinnoh mythology and even she has to hit the books over the course of Platinum to learn about Giratina. And to her, Arceus isn't a known name. Arceus isn't even a myth. As of Platinum Arceus was speculation. It was just a possible interpretation Cynthia has of a mural in Celestic town and the words on an old Plate. She doesn't even learn the name until some time between D/P/P and HG/SS.

So, with that taken into account, odds are if there's a deity to worship it's going to be a local one because the Legendary Pokémon being present in a region is the most likely way to build a follower-base. And since Paldea is kind of lacking in things to worship (The box Legends aren't really Legendary Pokémon since they're just past/future Cyclizar and the Treasures of Ruin are less gods and more cursed artifacts) if they were to worship anything, they'd go to the nearest region we know. Kalos.

None of them did anything wrong ever. They are all my children. Except Lorenz. He's a dick.

Could also be Rakua. Which, from what Horizons has revealed so far, is a hidden paradise found by an ancient adventurer and his team of unreasonably powerful Pokémon.

Heck, back in Legends Arceus, the Diamond and Pearl clans were feuding because they didn't even know Dialga and Palkia were separate pokemon.

Man, Paldea really doesn't have its own set of gods huh. If it weren't for Xerneas we'd be some real godless heathens.

Koraidon and Miraidon have the power of a small god, but aren't actually gods. Just extremely powerful creatures who might not have ever existed until they suddenly did.

Ogerpon is on the same boat as the previous two, and just as cute if not cuter than Koraidon. She's a knight among knights here apparently.

Pecharunt is just a malevolent spirit, with powerful minions in the Loyal Three.

And while the Treasures of Ruin are the most god-like beings in Paldea, we also aren't worshipping them and in fact sealed them away. So it's more like we have 4 Satan's we don't want anyone knowing about.

Also I'm so used to people making Arceus God that I didn't think that someone would try monotheism with a different Pokémon. That's definitely on me though.
Yeah it's interesting, it'd either nobody knowing about Arceus at all like in canon, or he's God in PokeChristianity.

Honestly, it seems like Sinnoh has the least known legendaries in-universe in the entire series. Nobody knows about the Lake Trio, Dialga and Palkia are thought to be the same being in the modern day and used to be called Almighty Sinnoh, Giratina is a total unknown, and Arceus is even more hidden than that.

Also. Wow, way to steal my thunder LunaticPanda and NMS.

Edit: Forgot to talk about Terapogos. According to the games (which seem to be the canon since I don't see Ash or Liko running around) it should be hibernating right now, but as gods go it is definitely one of them. Like, actual divinity.

Truth be told, I'd bet Poké-Europe is fairly united in venerating Xerneas. Galar doesn't really have "godly" Legendaries either, at least not of the type you'd actually worship. The Z-dogs are remembered as legendary hero(es), and Eternatus...well, he's not really evil, but tends to cause more problems than he solves, historically.

Weren't the existence of the Z-dogs covered up by a government conspiracy?

Yeah, Terapagos is up there with Arceus in terms of "this is a fundamental facet of existence embodied in a magical animal", but like Arceus, it's a complete unknown in the modern era and it takes obsessive research (or access to plot device jewelry) to have ever heard of the thing.

Weren't the existence of the Z-dogs covered up by a government conspiracy?
I'm just gonna admit straight up that I didn't play Sword and Shield either, but the fact remains that they're another unknown in history, just another "3000 years ago some shit happened and Something stopped it", with various people having various ideas on what "Something" was.
