So, looking at the gyms again to figure out who we should hit next for our second, and then further considering this point made in the latest chapter...
According to Erika it also helps build a trainer's brand image or something. Contest and tournament prizes are the main way for first-badgers to make cash until they get their second badge, which is where companies and sponsors usually start scouting for upcoming talents.
...that the second badge is usually when sponsors start looking at the talent, I think we should go for Iono instead of anyone else.
Putting aside the fact that putting Mariana in front of an audience of thousands (its only a second badge challenge after all, let's not get too crazy about viewer numbers) will always be comedy, I think hitting Iono would give us the most bang for our very literal monetary buck.
Picture this, you are a company looking to pick up a new batch of trainers to sponsor: you want someone you can rely on to have a certain level of charisma so they don't fuck up in front of a camera, a level of skill so they don't fuck up on the battlefield, a certain spice to them to attract attention beyond the usual, or ideally, all three.
We are Mariana, with the best CHRM in the class (unless Atticus is higher, which considering how pretty he is, maybe), and the second best SKLL, with our only equal being the child soldier prodigy, and the only one that's better is a future champion of Paldea who got that rank in a single year, who already has corporate ties. We're currently planning to 2v3 a Gym Leader again, less than a month after our first one, and this Gym Leader is unusually capable of giving coverage to challengers.
We're good at battling, we're probably going to be visually fine on camera, we're going to have people intrigued about the way we're handling gyms, we're class president, we have a rare pseudo-legendary as our starter, we don't (knowingly) have any ties to any large political movement or brand at the moment, we probably count for a diversity quota, and we'd get the inherent boost of being on an Iono Zone Challenge Stream.
We should be beating off sponsors with sticks. Just have to worry about fucky legal things to try and trap us with a shifty sponsor and we have people around us we can ask for help on that front.
Although this level of fame would be dampened a bit if we failed, of course.
