Also based on her background Erika should be an Emma expy of some kind but I have absolutely no clue if shes paired with anyone, she certainly doesn't act like Emma.
Crying is a sign of sadness in this instance, you know what would make me cry? Losing a family member and being pseudo adopted by a teacher into joining a school.
What's that you say? There's no implication that Leaf (who is already the Sara Expy) has pseudo adopted Erika? Objection! There is a possibility! If we look at the vote that inspired Erika...
[] You'll Make It Far Kid: Your Sponsor? Backer? Guy who you owe your future to is calling to check up on you. You update them on what's happened and they sound proud, which is good. They say that this is just the first step if you wanna make it far. Meet up with them later for dinner with your parents. Your starter should arrive tomorrow from one of the better daycares in the province. They then go on a tangent reminiscing like all old (read: 30+) people do. You don't mind much, they sometimes drop genuinely good advice and nuggets of what you think might be government secrets. (-2 CharGen Points)
Big Expectations. Someone Genuinely Important either saw potential in you or owed you or your parents a huge favor. So they're pulling strings to get you enrolled. They'll handle tuition—you just have to do your best and not fuck up.
Y'know what that sounds like? Sounds kind of like the relationship between Sara and Fie. We know in this instance that Leaf is a Sara Expy, which by proxy might make Erika the Fie Expy.
I haven't thought of any more reasons past this point, likely because we haven't actually seen much of Erika yet. But the points do line up that a "Powerful Backer/Sponsor" would probably include Leaf, Ex-Protagonist and new teacher of Class 7, and that Erika has something to be sad about, and I'm sure it's not just spilling liquid on her leggings. Also there's a comment about how both Emma and Fie lost family in a way but I wasn't really sure how to throw that in.
Pale face set in a scowl. Dark blue eyes with her long blue hair styled into pigtails. A worried looking Carbink trailing after her. She's wearing a white and pink cardigan, pink skirt and black leggings seemingly stained by an unknown drink. Your attempt at saying hello is met with an irritated snarl.
"Bathroom. Where."
Leaf rolls her eyes. "The women's bath is on the second floor."
As she finishes speaking, the new person stomps up the stairs while the Carbink stays behind, putting down the luggage she's been carrying via telekinesis. She seems to be giving you her best apologetic look.
"Is she…a student in Class VII?" You ask Leaf. She nods, bringing something up on her laptop before turning it to you.
"Yup. Erika Furuwada from Fede. Comes from a family of Kitakami refugees during the Indigo Civil War. Got the highest scores on the written entrance exams of all the first years. She's on the sponsorship program." She's the top scorer? Maybe you could convince her to tutor you for a bit tomorrow.
With no one else seemingly arriving soon, both you and Leaf turn in for the night after having the dinner that Wiggly cooked. Seems that after her bath, Erika immediately went to her room. Your own room is right next to hers, a plaque with your name on the door itself. Finding it unlocked, you head inside and spot dorm keys on the bed alongside folded bedsheets and a blanket. On the keyring are two keys, one for your room and one for the dorm itself.
Now that you're finally near a bed, the day's exhaustion hits you all at once, so you put down your luggage and let yourself fall onto the bed. From it, you take a good look around your room. It seems pretty spacious, with a desk, a study table, and a cabinet. From the corner of your eye, you see Roland looking tired as well. After asking if they wanna sleep with you or in their ball, they curl up around your pillow.
With that, you force yourself up in order to make and arrange your bed for night, putting the keys in your bag. Not even gonna bother with a bath. After that's done, you go to bed, give Roland their own pillow, and then go to sleep.
You sleep a dreamless sleep, which only lasts for a few hours before you wake up. Checking your phone, it's around 2 AM. You probably slept for about five hours. It feels uncomfortable, in a way; it's your first time sleeping so far away from home. Not even the times you slept at the inn at Tauros Fort felt similar. You blankly stare at the ceiling for a bit before deciding to try and go back to sleep, and that's when you hear it: a faint noise coming from the wall to the right of your bed.
Is someone crying? You put your ear to the wall, moving carefully to avoid making sound and waking up Roland. It seems to be coming from Erika's room.
You weigh your options. She did seem miserable earlier, and you might've just gotten off on the wrong foot.
You carefully make your way out of your room to knock on Erika's door.
"Hello? Are you alright? I heard crying from your room." Slowly, the sound of crying stops. You hear some shuffling inside before the door opens. If it's possible, Erika looks even worse. Her eyes are red and puffy from what you assume was crying, her hair's a mess, and she has a blanket draped over her.
"...I'm fine. Just had a bad dream." You almost don't hear her from how quietly she muttered it.
You can also tell an obvious lie when you hear one.
"Sorry for waking you. Good night." With that, she closes the door before you can reply or get a word in. You distinctly hear the sound of the door being locked.
Sighing, you go back to your room to sleep, and decide to try and check up on her tomorrow instead.
You wake up a few hours later at your usual time of 5 AM. Roland is still asleep, and you don't have it in you to wake them up. You go through your morning stretches and then head downstairs. You could probably take a bath before breakfast, and you'll have to find out where you could do laundry in the dorms.
After your morning exercise, followed by a bath, you find yourself downstairs eating breakfast with Leaf. The meal was prepared by Wiggly, who you thank for the bacon and eggs. Eventually, your attention is drawn from your meal by Leaf speaking up.
"Well, good morning, my little Ducklett. Anything you wanna say?" Leaf seems to be talking to someone. Your eyes move to the doorway, where you see Erika, who seems to have just woken up. She's wearing something similar to what she wore yesterday, and is holding her folded-up dirty clothes in her hands.
The Carbink that was with her yesterday is behind her, nudging her forward into the dining hall. She has a reluctant look on her face.
"I must apologize for my rudeness yesterday, and for any disturbance I may have caused others." Her eyes briefly turn to you before looking away. Her voice has neither the genuine irritation of yesterday nor the shakiness of last night.
Both you and Leaf accept her apology, and Erika seems to relax. She gets breakfast from Wiggly and sits down at the table. Leaf smirks, which you're quickly learning means she's plotting something.
"So, I heard that during enrollment you wrote a pretty good essay on Type Energy that has the Academy all riled up." Erika's eye twitches, and her fist clenches at the mention of Type Energy.
"I have no idea what you mean. I wrote an essay on Tera Energy, not Type Energy, after all." Erika tersely replies. Leaf's grin gets even bigger, if it's somehow possible. Erika stares her straight in the eye and continues. "Type Energy is an outdated term from when our understanding of both Terrastalization as a phenomena and the energy that Pokemon used was incomplete. It wasn't until recently that we actually found out they were one and the same, merely in different states—"
"So are you calling Samuel Oak wrong?" Leaf cheekily replies.
"Yes." Wow. Zero hesitation.
"Terrastalization was not his field of expertise and he was operating with what he knew at the time. So yes, despite his genius, Professor Oak was wrong."
"You'd have gotten along great with the old man. Daisy would probably strangle you, though."
"What even is Type or Tera Energy or whatever?" You interrupt, because you've constantly heard the term casually thrown around and you're tired of not knowing what it means. Both of them turn towards you, but Leaf still has that grin on her face.
"Tera Energy, or Type Energy as it is wrongly called, is an unseen energy found in the environment and Pokemon. Its manipulation by Pokemon into specific actions are the basis of what we call moves. The different kinds of Tera Energy correspond with the different Types, likely because our conception of Types are arbitrary and based on an incomplete understanding of the former."
"Tera Crystals are a purer crystalized form of Tera Energy, and its refinement and processing creates Orbal Energy. Orbal Energy is a form of Tera Energy that humans can proactively use for nearly everything. Power generation, industry, medicine, combat, the list goes on and on. Does that explanation work for you?" Actually, you just barely understood that. Shit, now you wish you wrote it down.
"Yes! Thank you so much, you have no idea how irritating it's been." Now it's Erika's turn to smirk.
"Oh, you have no idea." You raise an eyebrow at that.
"What do you mean by that?" You ask. Erika looks away, evidently not expecting you to follow her up on that.
"Hmm. I'll grade it a 8/10, since the old man would've argued your ear off for not bringing up how it affects human personalities." Leaf stands up from her chair, walking over to where Erika is seated and ruffling her hair.
"Stop that! And that's overstated, Tera Energy cannot influence something if it wasn't already in a person's personality!" A~nd you're lost again.
"Anyways, kids, gotta go out for a chore. Wiggly, you're in charge." Wigglytuff affirmatively responds to Leaf, and the both of you wave Leaf goodbye while Erika just grumbles a farewell as she fixes her hair.
With Leaf gone, it's now just the two of you and Wiggly, who's doing the dishes. An awkward silence fills the air before Erika excuses herself, saying she'll go study in her room. Before Erika goes upstairs, she asks Wiggly where the laundry should go, who points to a door to the right of the entrance.
Erika leaves her dirty clothes in a wastebasket inside the laundry room before heading to her room. After thinking on it for a bit, you follow after her, intent on asking her to tutor you. But before that, you head to your room to check if Roland is still asleep.
You're answered by them rushing at you once you open your door. Aaww, was he worried that you weren't there? You give them some berries that you got from Wiggly. You remember to charge your phone for the day and grab some books and notebooks from your bag. At Erika's room, you knock on her door while calling her name. The door opens slightly, and Erika's deep blue eyes can be seen through the gap.
"What is it?" Right, hopefully she doesn't say no.
"I was wondering if you could help tutor me for a bit. I struggle a lot with school work and you seem pretty smart…" You trail off at the end there, feeling bizarrely nervous about asking what is essentially a tutoring session. Erika stares at you, gears turning in her head.
"I have a question first," she responds. "Why'd you check up on me last night?"
"I heard you crying and I got worried. You seemed like you had a horrible day." It was honestly the least that you could do. At that, you hear the chain being removed and the door fully swings open.
Her room is similar to yours. Expected, since you're in the same dorm, afterall. The only unique touch she has seems to be a small vanity mirror studded with crystals on her study desk. The Carbink that was with her is on the side of the bed, seemingly practicing levitating and controlling crystals and other rocks around her.
"Come in, please take a seat. This is Cornelia. Cornelia, go practice later. We have a guest." Erika invites you in, bringing out a book from her bag and sitting on her bed. "We'll do this according to the seven main subjects of the academy; Natural Sciences, Math, History, Pokemon Studies, Battle Studies, Arts and Languages. So, let's begin."
9:00 AM
"Let's use Tera Energy as a jumping off point. Prior to Orbal Refinement, one of the only ways humans could use or manipulate TE, which is what I'll be calling the former from here on out because I don't want to say all of it out loud, was through the usage of Pokemon Materials. Weapons from Steel Types, crops grown and tended by Grass and Bug Types, Martial Arts based off of Fighting Types, etcetera etcetera etcetera. A lot of people still use them today, like that heirloom you mentioned and my mirror made from Gran-nevermind. Let's move on."
While you feel yourself getting sucked into the sheer passion of her explanations, you also notice that she has a slight accent if she talks for too long or too passionately. It's one you've never heard of before. She seems a lot more animated during this, her body constantly on the move or making gestures, her face contorting and shifting into all sorts of expressions. You can't look away.
1:00 PM
"Hmm. You're really bad at this." You grimace as Erika checks your work on your notebook. According to her, the best way to learn Practical Math is, well, with practice. So she gave you a brief overview and a number of math problems to solve. You take a bite out of the lunch Wiggly prepared for the two of you to avoid speaking, slightly embarrassed.
Erika got it from downstairs while you were busy solving problems. Apparently, two other people have arrived, a girl and a boy, but they immediately left, the girl, apparently, having dragged the latter to the Battle Arenas to fight.
"How'd you even pass the entrance exam with this?" Erika incredulously remarks at your work.
You sheepishly shrug. "I genuinely don't remember. I feel like I got dumber in the weeks after I took it."
6:00 PM
"You could regularly talk with a Great War veteran but you never asked them why the war started?" It's just you and Erika in her room now. Both Cornelia and Roland got bored and are now sparring in your room. You hope they don't make too much of a mess.
"I mean, I did, but they always just said it was 'Orre and Kanto-Johto being assholes.' Like, what even is a Cipherist?"
"I mean, that's not untrue. Cipherism is, well, it's a far-ri—wait, no, I don't want to have to explain the left-right dichotomy. It's a militaristic ideology that took over Orre around the 1960s. Their primary tenets were the denial of the personhood of Pokemon, the conquest of both Holon and Unova, the usage of Shadow Pokemon, and Orrite Supremacism. They were all-around assholes. Meanwhile, Kanto-Johto were…"
Erika trails off, seemingly lost in thought. She even stops spinning the pen in her fingers, which she does whenever she explains something.
"…they wanted to conquer all of Shinwa, their home continent. Which meant taking over Hoenn, Sinnoh and Northern Almia. Paldea and Kalos got dragged in via their alliances with Unova and Hoenn respectively, while Alola and Galar stayed neutral. The war ended when—"
"Ho-oh and Lugia intervened in the war after Orre unleashed Shadow Lugia onto Eastern Unova," you interrupt her. This part you know well. Jenkins was recuperating in a hospital in Nacrene City when Shadow Lugia made landfall.
His description of it was haunting, calm weather one moment and then a raging storm suddenly appearing. Floods which caused titanic, brackish waves reaching as far inland as Straiton. Countless humans and Pokemon desperately tried to reach higher ground, but it didn't matter as the waves kept coming, growing bigger and bigger as the floods kept getting higher and higher.
It only lasted for 3 hours before Lugia arrived and pulled Shadow Lugia back to sea, putting them down. Meanwhile, Ho-oh flew over Orre, burning and scorching everything in its wake. Jenkins always talked about that part with an edge of vindictiveness.
"You, uh, wanna take a break?" You're snapped out of your thoughts by a pale-faced Erika. Well, paler than usual. Were you thinking out loud?
"Sorry, didn't mean to drag down the mood," you apologize, which has Erika shaking their head.
"It's fine. Let's go make sure those two haven't destroyed your room already."
9:00 PM
"You're spoiling them, you know that, right? They'll be a menace once they evolve." You and Erika found your Pokemon utterly exhausted, your Dreepy not strong enough to pierce a Carbink's defenses and the latter being unable to keep up with their sheer tenacity and speed. Thankfully, they held themselves back so they didn't break anything. Which is a good thing, because you think Wiggly might've murdered you if they did.
"It'll be fine, I think I can handle it. Thanks for worrying, though," you reply while feeding Roland a berry.
During your break, you two decide to get some dinner downstairs, where you meet your classmates Theodora and Manuel. Two bigshot nobles, according to Erika.
It seems Leaf still isn't back, so you get the very weird scene of Wiggly using a small whiteboard to introduce themselves to the newcomers and to give orders to you two to help her cook. Well, she gave orders to you to help her cook. Erika doesn't know how to and neither did the newcomers.
So it's you, Wiggly and Theodora's maid who actually cook. The maid doesn't seem to get along with any of the Pokemon except for Wiggly.
After dinner, the two nobles excuse themselves for the night, and you and Erika go back to her room to finish up studying as well.
"The battlemania is cute now, but Dragons and Dragon-like Pokemon are infamous for refusing to fight battles that they think are beneath them or fighting in ways they don't like." You frown. That would be a problem in the future. Roland is already kind of a brat now; you should ask Jenkins how he trained a dragon at some point.
"What about you, Miss Fairy Type Starter?" Just as notorious to train and raise are fairy types. While Dragons can be temperamental and egotistic, Fairies are infamous for being mercurial and holding grudges. Out of any Pokemon type, Fairies are the ones who despise being captured against their will the most.
"I'm not worried. Cornelia is basically my sister; we were raised together." At that, Cornelia floats towards Erika and settles themselves on her lap. Right, fairies are also some of the most unflinchingly loyal Pokemon if they do like their trainer. Same with dragons, though they still maintain their ego issues.
""Y~aaawn.""
Suddenly, both of you yawn and stretch your arms at the exact same time. Noticing what happened, you both fall into a giggling fit, and devolve into laughing at and with each other. After agreeing to continue the tutoring tomorrow, you head back to your room and go to bed.
It's the next day, and apparently Leaf still isn't back. You're starting to worry, but Wiggly reassures you that she's fine and will be back within the day. You also meet Nemona and Jacinto that morning, joining you, Erika, Theodora and Manuel for breakfast.
Jacinto rushes through his meal and promptly excuses himself, saying he was going to be staying in his room and glaring at the two nobles on his way out. Nemona then invites the two nobles to battle, seemingly unaware of what just happened. Theodora declines while Manuel accepts, and so the two head off to fight at the Academy Town's Battle Arena.
With breakfast done, you and Erika go to your room for today's tutoring session.
9:00 AM
"So is mastering TE how people make new moves?"
"Yes. What separates mere custom moves, which are pretty common in the higher levels of trainers, with moves that could truly be mass produced via Technical Machines are applicability. Moves that, say, only the Ninetales line can use are unlikely to be made TMs, while a custom move that a quarter of all water types can use is viable for mass production. In Paldea, it's the League that handles mass producing and turning moves into TMs; I believe they pay a hefty sum for new ones."
Your ears perk up at the words 'hefty sum.' That's one way to get some cash. Currently, you're both sitting on your bed close together, as between the two of you, there was only one copy of the Battle Studies Primer, so you decided to share.
You're also keeping an eye on Cornelia and Roland, occasionally giving instructions on their playspar. You're using this as an opportunity for Roland to practice Quick Attack by trying to hit and get past Cornelia's defenses, while Erika is having the latter gain experience in quickly raising her crystal shields or shells in order to defend herself. Erika insists that when it comes to training Pokemon, theory, while useful, is insufficient, and that nothing can replace good practice.
1:00 PM
This continues on up until lunch, when Leaf finally comes back. She looks haggard and exhausted, her hair and clothes a mess. She does, however, have a new Pokeball on her belt.
"How were my little Duckletts, did you miss me!? Save your question for, I don't know, maybe next week. Momma feels like she's gonna pass out. Wiggly, you're still in charge. Missy, you stay with Wiggly and keep them company."
As Leaf goes upstairs, the Mismagius that was in her shadow emerges and floats over to the kitchen with Wigglytuff, wherein they immediately start bickering over the latter's cooking.
After cleaning up, you and Erika leave the two to their arguing to return to your room to slam your collective heads back against the Arts primer. It's just the two of you, now. You both returned your Pokemon to their balls to rest, having exhausted themselves earlier.
"I literally don't think it's ever going to be relevant to know what a trompe-l'œil ceiling is," Erika desperately pleads with you.
"We're so close, please let's just get through this and we'll be done with it for the day. If you want, we could relax and watch a movie or something on your laptop," You bargain with her. For some reason, Erika looks away, her face red, and says it's not necessary. Is she tired? If she's sick, she could just tell you.
7:00 PM
One wonders why a military academy has an entire section dedicated to Languages. According to Erika, as a department, it's closer to Foreign Studies than anything else, that its current designation is a relic of the post-Industrial Revolution opening Paldea to Shinwan traders and the need for a dedicated Diplomatic Corps. Eventually, the department grew to encompass the study of foreign cultures, not just their languages.
With this being the last topic, you both decided to take it easy. Both of you are seated on your bed, back to back with each other while reading your own books. It makes for a funny image, considering you're a head taller than her. You're currently reciting a Paldean translation of a Kantonian poem, while Erika points out where the translation differs.
"For an Andosin, you're surprisingly articulate," Erika says, almost absentmindedly.
You stop reading.
Irritation, maybe even a feeling of betrayal flashes through you. You pull away and turn to where she's seated on your bed. Erika turns her head to you in confusion.
"What do you mean for an Andosin? What's surprising about it?" You innocently ask.
Erika finally realizes, and regret flashes through her face. "I am so sorry! I didn't mean it like that—I mean I didn't intend to insult—" She's babbling, and you stop her.
"It's fine." You unintentionally put a bit too much emphasis on 'fine,' causing Erika to flinch back. "Let's… just keep going…" She mutters another apology before the two of you go back to reading.
Despite the sincere apology, there's an awkwardness in the air now. The study session itself slows to a crawl as Erika thinks on and deliberates what she said. Her diction is stiff and stilted, almost second-guessing everything that comes out of her mouth. Eventually, both of you finish the primer, and she awkwardly excuses herself from your room.
Sighing in exhaustion, you head down to get dinner. You vaguely hear the sound of muffled screaming coming from her room, as if someone was yelling into their pillow.
While downstairs, you're treated to the strange sight of a young man who introduces himself as Atticus, sewing Wiggly and Missy a sweater with thread from his Spinarak. It also seems that Leaf is awake again.
"Oh? Where's your friend?" You roll her eyes at her teasing and explain the situation to her.
"So Rika wasn't kidding when she said foot-in-mouth syndrome…" Leaf says something under her breath that you don't catch. "So how do you feel about it?" She suddenly asks.
"Well, I didn't like it and I told her that. It made things awkward, we kinda ended on a not great note. Well, she apologized, but I mean…" It's not your first time getting told that or something similar. Maybe your experiences so far out of the Highlands have colored your expectations a bit. You spent half a day with Ostia and went to a restaurant with them without something like this happening. You enjoyed nearly two whole days with Erika before this. Maybe you'd gotten too comfortable, and this was just a splash of cold water to remind you of reality.
"Do what you think is best." Leaf looks at you with utmost seriousness in her eyes. "If you're still okay with being friends, tell her. If you're not, you should still tell her. But it's up to you."
You nod, and decide to get two meals from Wiggly. Leaf mutters something about teenagers while you go up the stairs.
Knocking on Erika's door, you leave the plate on the floor. "Erika, if you're hungry I left some food by your door."
You head back to your room and finish your own meal, giving Roland a berry for dinner. You head out of your room one last time to return your plate to Wiggly, and you see that the meal you left by Erika's door is gone.
Going back to your room, you decide to go to sleep. You don't hear any crying that night.
You wake up bright and early the next day. Checking your clock, you have a little over an hour before 7:00 AM.
Today's the day. Orientation Day. From here on out, you're going to be spending your next few years in one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the world.
As you go through your morning routine, barely noticing a few new unfamiliar faces during breakfast, your mind wanders. Your journey to get here, what you've done the past few days, and the people you've met. You idly return conservations with a dark-skinned girl with dark blue hair during breakfast. Apparently, she's the latest arrival for Class VII; you really didn't catch her name.
You wait for Roland to finish their breakfast and then thank Wiggly for the meal. You head back to your room to prepare for the day, grabbing your bag, some notebook and pens and Roland's Pokeball. Wearing the Academy dress uniform, you survey yourself and what you're wearing in the mirror.
Predominantly red and white, with black and gold outlines, the Academy's sigil of the Imperial Pyroar and Rapidash on the shoulders. For your bottom half, a black skirt that nearly goes to your knees, thigh highs that hug your legs and the same pair of running shoes you use everyday. A part of you still doubts that you deserve to be here, especially with how painfully obvious your academic deficiencies are. But nevertheless, here you are.
A thought occurs to you that you hadn't seen Erika at breakfast. Last night ended on a pretty awkward note, and by how desperately she apologized to you she probably didn't want it to turn out that way. Going to her door, you knock on it to check up on her.
"Erika? It's morning, are you okay? Class starts in under an hour." You hear the sounds of movement and someone falling from their bed.
"What the hell Cornelia! I was still—what time is it? OH SHIT!" You hear Erika's voice repeatedly swear, accompanied by the noise of panicked rushing. So she slept in, huh?
"Do you need me to come in and help, Erika, or…?"
"PLEASE D-DON'T COME IN! I-I can handle it! T-thanks for offering, y-you go on ahead to school. I'll catch up!" Erika stammers out from behind the door. A brief silence follows, only broken by Erika speaking up again.
"Also, about last night…thanks for bringing me dinner…again, I am so sor-"
"It's fine. Water under the bridge. Just…don't do it again alright?" You interrupt her before she can get going.
"...thank you." You barely catch her words having already headed downstairs.
Heading out of the dorms with Roland wrapped around your neck as always, you two make your way towards the academy grounds. You see students going to and from both of the regular dorms, friends with shoulders slung over one another, young nobles attended to and escorted by the academy staff, and even a number of latecomer students who are just now arriving.
This early on in the day the air is still rather cool, resulting in a relaxing breeze that calms your nerves. As you approach the gates, you spot a few banners with the words "Orientation Day for Freshmen, Head to Felipe Hall on the Left!" Along the entrance are a number of what seem to be upperclassmen instructing new students where to go. At the head of them is a very serious looking young man who seems to already be suffering from a receding hairline.
They introduce themselves as Giacomo, a 2nd Year and the current Student Council President. You nod at their instructions, having already known where to go. With that done, you leave the poor guy to his task and head to Felipe Hall.
Felipe Hall was constructed in the centuries after Emperor Rodrigo reunified Paldea in the aftermath of the Dark Ages. Established by academy alumni under the leadership of then Emperor Felipe Agustin Arnor around the 17th Century, it was meant to expand the Academy's curriculum into the humanities and sciences. Thus, it was built in the Rimean Baroque style that was popular during that era.
As you enter the Hall, you are met with beautifully sculpted spiraling columns that draw the eye upwards to the various religious frescoes on the ceiling, depicting scenes from the Geomantic Testaments, art of Fairy Pokemon considered near divine during that time and trompe-l'œil paintings of what people believed Xerneas' garden was supposed to look like.
You are so focused staring up that you almost bump into a few students a couple of times. Sightsee later, Mariana, focus on the orientation before the Butterfrees in your stomach come back. You make your way to the Hall's Auditorium, wading through crowds of students as best you can. Before you could enter, you're told to return your Pokemon to their ball at least for the time being. Roland seems so mesmerized by his surroundings that he doesn't notice you recalling them.
The Auditorium proper is massive and extravagant, intricately covered in gold filings and a trompe-l'œil ceiling. It's been host to a large number of famed opera performances, orchestras and musicians throughout the years, recent among them the world famous Portomédio Opera Company and its lead singer Dorothea Casagandra. Recently, it also hosted a performance by the Rimean Theatre Group Arc en Ciel under invite from the eccentric Prince Carlos.
Around the theater, a number of older students stand around and guide incoming freshmen to their seating arrangements. Students are seated according to classes, so you'll be seeing your classmates sooner than later. As you look for where Class VII should be seated, an upperclassman points it to you, and there you see it. Or rather, them.
That same distinctive mop of purple hair that you'd subconsciously been worrying about for the past two days: Ostia. You nearly trip over yourself as you push past people and rush to check up on them. Both relief and worry fill your chest at how they're doing. Eventually, Ostia notices you, and with a big smile waves towards you, patting the seat to their right. You take their invitation and sit next to them, ignoring the nasty looks you're getting from the commotion you caused.
"Hi, Miss Mariana!" Ostia nearly shouts, causing a teacher to shush and glare at them. You glare back at the teacher. "How are you doing…" whispers Ostia to avoid getting scolded again.
"I'm okay, how about you?" You wish Argy was here; this would be so much easier since they could just tell you if Raifort did anything.
"I'm alright. I did some…training. I need it for the future." You catch the hesitation there. From the corner of your eye, you also see Ostia's hands stiffly open and close like they're trying to destress. You need to calm them down.
"How's Argy doing?" You switch subjects. From your brief time with the kid, they genuinely love talking about Pokemon. Immediately, Ostia's face lights up as they gush about Argy's progress and how they hope they evolve soon.
"Argy promised to let me ride on their back and go wherever I want once they evolve. They have to do it by getting smarter and bulkier, though, since other Argy said they liked being a jerk to other Beldums to fuse with any." Right, there are multiple known ways for Beldums to evolve into a Metang. They can either reach a Consensus with another Beldum, creating a pseudo mind meld, or they can become strong enough to essentially replicate their personality to substitute the need for another Beldum.
As the two of you talk about Pokemon, you notice more and more students arrive and sit down. A few faces you saw yesterday at the Class VII dorms also start to show up. Finally, you see Leaf, who has a haggard looking Erika and the girl you talked to during breakfast with her. As Erika sits next to you, the fact that she didn't have time to fix her hair becomes noticeable. Rather than her typical pigtails, her blue hair is straightened and flat. She gives you a look all but begging you to ignore it, which you gracefully comply with.
"A~lright my Class VII Duckletts, can I have a moment of your time, please?" Leaf calls your class to attention with a clap of her hands. Now that you can take a good look at them, you take a headcount of who's going to be in your class.
On the furthest end of your row seats sits a Nemona, who is fidgeting impatiently. Next to her is Manuel, who seems to be fastidiously ignoring an unhappy looking Jacinto. Next to them was Atticus, after him was Ostia, then you and Erika. After her was Theodora. She was, prior to being called to attention by your homeroom teacher, in a conversation with that dark-skinned girl from earlier. You should really try and remember their name.
"You may mingle amongst yourselves in your own time, Orientation is about to start and I don't want Henry getting on my case because this class didn't pay attention." With that, Leaf leaves your class and heads towards the part of the theater where the other teachers were seated.
Slowly but surely, the crowd quiets down as the anticipation of the Opening Speech and Orientation begins to set in. Walking onto the center of the stage is a bespectacled man dressed in finery that essentially screams he is nobility.
"Good day to all who are about to attend our august institution…"
You can not for the life of you pay attention. The topic itself has already been covered by your handbook, but there is something in how the speaker, who is apparently Deputy Director Henry Ayala, talks that just lulls you into boredom. And you're not alone in this; Ostia's dozing off and Erika spends most of the speech staring at you, likely trying to apologize again.
"I apologize about what I said and I understand if you aren't inclined to be near me anymore…" Erika's voice is a whisper, likely to avoid getting scolded for talking during the speech.
"Look, it's fine, I should've expected it to happen sooner or later. I got too comfortable." Erika looks incredulous.
"Expected?! Comfortable!? That's absurd, what I did was wrong and you shouldn't just accept that as a part of life. You deserve respect! And I'd rather you never talk to me again than accept that should happen to you!" She nearly raises her voice to talking levels, getting you two glares from a teacher. The way she said that seems weird; her family is from Kitakami, aren't they?
"You say that like you're speaking from experience." She looks away before replying with a quiet voice.
"...maybe." You sigh. It's not even your first day yet, and things are already so complicated.
"Let's start over, then. My name is Mariana Ganzorig." You hold out your right hand for her to shake. It's a rather awkward position.
She takes it with her own right hand, and shakes it. "My name is Erika Furuwada." There's still an awkwardness in the air, but you could say that this is behind you two.
"…now, if I may, I'd like to say a few words in closing about this academy's illustrious history." You're snapped back to attention by the sound of a new voice speaking. You turn your gaze back towards the stage, and see a tall, thin, reedy man. He has a well-groomed mustache and wears a military uniform denoting his rank as a General of the Army.
"Mesagoza Academy was founded almost a millennia ago. Its founder was none other than the great Emperor Rodrigo, the First Champion who ended the chaos of the Dark Ages and returned prosperity to Paldea." Whereas the earlier orientation made listening difficult, there's a presence to the current speaker. One that demands attention. Even Ostia and Erika are paying attention again. "In the last years of his reign, he opened the doors of this institution. It was to be a place where young people like yourselves could learn the Art of War and Pokemon Battle."
At the sound of the word battle, Nemona perks up and elbows Manuel to pay attention again. Manuel himself is still exhausted, having slept past midnight due to being dragged by Nemona to battle all day yesterday. "Today, this Academy exists in a changed and continuously changing world. Paldea herself is in a position that would've been unimaginable a mere century ago. Her advances in the fields of science and war have brought new innovations and conquests for the Empire. Her leaders now guide her through uncharted waters as one of the foremost powers across the globe."
Jacinto straightens his back, pride in his country swelling in his heart. Theodora, outwardly calm, internally seethes and clenches her fist until her knuckles are white. Atticus and Elise notice, and look at their classmates with worry. "Our mission, however, remains the same: to prepare our students to fulfill Emperor Rodrigo's famous mandate…"
Elise buries the doubt and trepidation in her heart. There is no turning back now.
"Arise , O youth, and become the foundation of the world."

You have 3 AP Available
Current Cash: 10,000 Pokedollars
League Points: 1,000

Potential Social Encounters: Erika, ??? , Jacinto
Gain 300 KNOW XP (Increases to 660 KNOW XP with traits)
[] Pokemon and Me: The Academy has a vast collection of Pokemon under its care and employ. Not even counting student and trainer Pokemon. Such a large menagerie necessitates a small army just to take care of them and their needs. Time to check out the enlistment center. -1 AP
Potential Social Encounters: ???, Ostia, Atticus
Gain 300 PROW XP.
Gain 500 League Points
Gain random Pokemon Material
[] You Can't Run from a Trainer Battle: The battling Arenas at Rodrigo Hall are both numerous and massive. Since it's still early in the school year, the gap between the various students in the same year isn't quite big yet. Get your and your Pokemon's blood pumping with a good battle. -1 AP
Potential Social Encounters: Nemona, Jacinto, Elise

At this stage early on it's still safe to use the Training Fields of the Academy. But as you get stronger you'll have to look for more isolated places. You can't let people find out what you're cooking after all. That and something about collateral damage from moves getting worse. -1 AP

[] Advanced BATTLE: A Pokemon Journey is a multi year long process. Most Trainers get one badge and then struggle for years getting a second. Half of all Paldean Trainers quit around the third Gym. Only a tenth make it to the seventh Gym. There are no shortages of Trainers with only one Badge hanging around in Mesagoza. Many of them go to Battle Arenas in Mesagoza proper to prepare themselves for the League Circuit opening up in August. You can challenge them, you're absolutely going to lose but there's no better way to reveal your weakness than having them ruthlessly exploited. -1 AP
Potential Social Encounters: Nemona, Manuel, Erika
Gain 400-600 SKLL XP
Gain 300-500 Pokemon XP
All Pokemon Moves Gain 1 MXP
Lose Money no matter what
[] The World in a City (1/10): Mesagoza is huge. Obscenely so. It's so massive and sprawling that you could spend days traveling through every inch of it and still miss some nooks and crannies. But you're going to be spending the better part of three years in this city. Maybe even more in the future. Better get wandering. -1 AP
This is a Multi-Action Choice. Each AP spent on it unlocks more options and choices in the future. -1 AP
Roll a 1d100 Random Event Roll
Unlock at 1/10: Where can a Girl get some TM's? (Will give a random Simple TM. Unlocks TM purchases)
Unlock at 2/10: The Ranger Station here is still operational apparently. They're severely understaffed so they're open to any help they can get (Unlock Ranger Bulletin Boards. Spend AP to do odd jobs too below the notice of the League for some cash)
[] Purchasing Power: One of the Advantages of being a student in Mesagoza Academy (aside from the student discount) is that unlike regular Trainers on their journey, You don't have to trudge through the routes to get from settlement to settlement. This does mean that there isn't a need for healing items and traveling gear outside of Field Exercises. But it doesn't hurt to be prepared. You never know when that potion is the difference between victory or defeat. -1 AP
Start a Mini Turn buying items
Current Cash: Pokedollars 10,000
Available items depend on locations in Mesagoza unlocked
[CANNOT BE TAKEN] The First Step (1/2): Yo! Champ In the making! Gyms serve as testing grounds in a Journey. Places where a Trainer's strengths and weaknesses are laid bare in a safe environment. Some regions prefer purely combat Gyms, others prefer to test a Trainer's relationship with their Pokemon and some challenge a person's relation to the wild and the world around them. Paldea operates on a hybrid system, the vast wilds of the region necessitating Trainers that know their lefts from their rights, but also Trainers that know how to fight.
Normally taking on Gyms during Field Exercises let you skip the Gym Challenge part and go straight to the Leader. But for one reason or another you're taking on your first Gym now, so Gym Challenge it is. -1AP
Will feature a sub vote next update on which Gym you will be tackling
-2000 League Points. Will be returned after a successful Gym Battle.
Taking this option will lock you into a Gym Leader fight next week. Gym Challenge will depend on which settlement's Gym was challenged
Since it's your first Gym, it will feature a Major Battle against a Gym Trainer. If you can't beat them, don't even think about beating the Gym Leader (2v2 Major Battle)
CANNOT BE TAKEN (Need more than 1 Pokemon) (Gyms open in August)
Bonding Event: A week's available bonding events are decided either by the narrative or by who you hung out with last week as seen in the Potential Social Encounters. For this week, Bonding Events are decided by your Prologue Votes. Bonding Events with your Pokemon are always Available. (Choose 2)
[] Roland: He isn;t satisfied with the usual routine of you just throwing them as far as you could. He wants more. From what you could gleam it seems to involve being thrown from really high up? It should mostly be fine since he's a Ghost-Type but you're not confident about throwing them off of the higher floors of Mesagoza Academy just yet. Improved Bond with Roland. 0/5 to Bond 3
[] Ostia and Argy: They seem to be doing better now than when you last saw them during your first day together. They're inviting you to go out and eat with them in Mesagoza. They seem really enthusiastic about all the restaurants and eateries in the city. Their treat of course. Next to them Argy stares at you like they always do. Improve Bond with Ostia and Argy. 0/3 to Bond 2
[] Erika: She has cordially invited you to join her in perusing the older sections of the Academy's libraries with her. She seems interested in myths, histories and legends from around the period of the Paldean Dark Ages. She even managed to find a couple manuscripts written in Old Andosin. Any reason to practice your Andosin is a good reason in your eyes. Improve Bond with Erika. 0/3 to Bond 2
We are finally through the Prologue. From here on we'll be going through weekly turns until the first Field Exercise during the first week of August.
Bonds with Human characters and Class operate similarly to Bonds with your Pokemon, though benefits are primarily story and character beats with some occasional benefits. (ie. At Bond 2 Erika will automatically join you during Library Studies increasing KNOW gain. At Bond 2 Ostia will join you in exploring Mesagoza giving +20 to random event rolls)
Bonds will also automatically raise during Field Exercises and Major Story beats.
+600 CHRM XP for three passed CHRM rolls in the Prologue
Massive thanks to Casmii for proofreading this update
We need a second pokemon to challenge a gym, and no obvious way to acquire one is open yet. Exploring the city might help.
Challenging 1st badge trainers is better for Roland's growth, but we're too poor to waste money on it. I reckon two training actions - one at the battle arenas, one on training Dreepys moves. We should hot KNOW 6 this turn from passive gain.
If you want, we could relax and watch a movie or something on your laptop," You bargain with her. For some reason, Erika looks away, her face red, and says it's not necessary. Is she tired? If she's sick, she could just tell you.
"I apologize about what I said and I understand if you aren't inclined to be near me anymore…" Erika's voice is a whisper, likely to avoid getting scolded for talking during the speech.
Oh yeah I remember my math (vaguely) that's more then enough to get to KNOW 8 before midterms! Especially since we're partway through KNOW 6 thanks to Erika, which I 100% did not account for in my math. (Wait are we not at KNOW 6? Hm, my math may have been wrong, but in a way where it doesn't really matter, the passive XP should give more then enough to get us KNOW 8 by midterms still.)

Getting more options from the City is pretty important, and may lead us to finding a place to catch a Pokémon, but we can't ignore the Pokémon we already have because he is very important, so Train Them Is Our Cause. Then Ostia and Erika because Roland is already at Bond 3 and getting to know our classmates is a lil important, especially if we're playing part-time parent to both of them aha.
I would explore only once and do academy trainer battles with the second action. Both because I want to meet Nemona and we need more PKMN XP for Dreepy if we want to hit 1st badge level by the first Field Exercise - we only have 12 actions and need 800 XP, and training only averages 150 XP so we need to do more than one training action per week to get there in time.
Hanging out with Ostia and Erika sounds good though.

[] Grade 9 Trainer Work: Now that you're a trainer, there are a variety of odd jobs that typically people need doing. A lot of them are too minor for rangers to do, clearing out lost wild Pokémon in nooks and crannies, babysitting Pokémon, going to isolated hamlet's and villages too small to be on most maps for favors and such. All the grunt work the Ranger's are too busy or are too minor to handle. It's not much, but it's honest work.
Roll a d6 for a Pokemon encounter. Catching Possible, if not added to party will be turned over to Rangers
Directly tied to doing Ranger work was the chance at getting a Pokémon too. (Or, not Ranger work but "Too easy to be Ranger work" really)
And the way I see it, we need to train Roland a little bit, to be able to take care of whatever wild Pokémon we find, but we shouldn't train TOO hard or the Pokémon we catch might be too behind in theory.
Point is, a little training so Roland can fight, catch a second Pokémon so we can take on the Gym, and then TRIPLE DOWN ON TRAINING so both Roland and Theoretical Pokémon 2 are well trained for the gym!
My indecisive ass who wants all of the options will probably just wait until someone else comes up with a good plan
Really liked this update! So now we have our first friend (or close enough at least) and we get to see our surrogate sibling again, missed them. Really looking forward to how this is gonna go
It'll primarily be through bonding events and major story beats that you'll be able to get to know your Pokemon, their issues and what makes them tick, better.
So even if we do unlock ranger tasks next week, it will probably take two of them to find another pokemon, who we may or may not want, because from the catching rolls in Jacinto's social catching a pokemon requires some good rolls. It'll take 2-3 actions to get a pokemon, and by that point we only have 7ish actions to train both pokemon and do everything else. We start further behind than most our classmates in pokemon and wealth - it makes no sense to try and match them at the beginning by getting our first badge early. Focus on our core skills of being a good trainer, get our pokemon as they come, and match them all later
Also, I want to meet and battle Nemona this week, and we can't do that if we don't go battling. So here's a plan with that.

I like it! it makes our first week a little low on EXP but I think opening up possibilities we'd want later is good, would be really annoying later on if we wanted to do ranger work and we still hadn't unlocked it! definitely agree on the bonding with friends part though, love Roland but he and we need more friends, he can have fun throwing himself at a fairy type that always goes well for dragons!

And hey! Even though it's a slow start to EXP, Ranger Work might be dealing with Pokémon, which would mean more EXP anyway! A slow start for a faster future!

Am very interested in this as well, I don't think week one it nearly as important as everything else, but I DO want to bet up nobles at some point, I think ass-kicking is an important part of a growing Marianna's lifestyle
Added Erika's profile to the Class 7 thus far Informational
Also added Ostia's stats
Edit: Added Rudimentary profile's for the rest of Class 7 since you technically met all of them now.
Side note: I don't know why Erika Furudo had Danganronpa fanart of her but I am thankful for it
..thank god we're here to shore up their weaknesses, and vice versa. Erika handles the KNOW, we handle the CHRM, and Ostia handles SKLL. It's a perfect system.
