We need to get that schoolwork up to snuff sooner rather than later - simply teaching the sealing spell is going to require us to hit 12 KNOW, and we're starting at 5. In some dire need of remediation here.
Obviously we'll need to wait to see the actual turn options before we decide on specifics, but I think 3 good actions to start off with are one for dedicated studying,
And remember, because we're so stupid low on KNOW we get Passive KNOW Gain until we hit KNOW 8, so depending on how much XP that Passive Gain is, it might genuinely be wiser to ignore Study actions until it hits KNOW 8. Even if it's only 200XP each Week though, with our two bonuses right now 200XP is 440XP (If I mathed good) for the first month and 400XP until we reach that KNOW 8.

Point is, it may be more cost efficient to let the Passive KNOW Gain to do the work for us, and use the extra action on something else if we can?

And you know what we can use that extra time on? Training! Let's get that Dreepy tough! Let's get to 14 in SKILL! I want that Veteran ranking.

Of course, there's also the argument that pushing through on KNOW as fast as possible will also be more efficient.

We've got until November for midterms. By then, I'd want to be at KNOW 8 - the standard on acceptance - just so we don't bomb horribly. And Paladean isn't our first language, so some KNOW training early is good just to pick up the language faster even if immersion will do some work. But this is a pokemon school at the end of the day.

Going on my previous guess about getting 200 XP a week while we're under KNOW 8, and then multiplying that by two to get 400 XP. We have 14 free weeks where the Passive XP could proc. Which is vaguely 5600 XP.

Which is to say, if we assume its 200XPx2 every week and didn't touch any study actions, we would hit KNOW 8 by the middle of October and be somewhat safe for Midterms. We can even move it a little lower as say 150XP x2 each week and still make it on the week before the FE that happens before the Midterms. (and none of this math included that we just got 400XP for KNOW last chapter either.)

Kind of a big assumption on my part though. And more is better, so we probably should throw in a couple of study actions, I'm just saying depending on how generous the passive XP is we should be goodish.

EDIT: It'll be real funny if ArvisPresley see's my math here and decides to make it 100XP per week because of it.

Prologue "Ostia and Argy"
[X] Nickname: Roland
[X] Ostia

From what you've read, the trains in the Zara-Zapapico-Levincia line are some of the oldest and still-operating ones in all of Paldea. Since it's your first time riding one, you have no prior experience to compare it to. Alongside your uniforms, you were provided with some train tickets to help get you to Mesagoza. When you showed it to the station staff, they were even surprisingly accommodating to you.

So here you are: petting Roland (you finally decided on a nickname for Dreepy) while watching Tagtree Thicket pass you by, in what you're told is a first class cabin in the train. You've spent your entire life in the Highlands, so you've only really known about the Thicket from secondhand accounts and stories. They told of a vast ancient forest, a near endless sea of green, where underneath lies trunks marked and graffitied by Pokemon in all sorts of colors. Meant to denote the constantly shifting territories, habitats and homes of the Pokemon that called it home. A sometimes misty valley nestled between Glaseado, the Highlands and the Aragon.

The route you're taking hugs the Aragon cliff face, meant to avoid the depths of the forests. Looking out the window of your cabin, you only see that endless verdant sea, the train high up, overlooking the Thicket. You wonder if those colored—

You're disturbed out of your thoughts by Roland squirming in your grasp. Looks like he's no longer sleepy.

"What up, little guy? How're you feeling?" They respond by miming an eating motion and looking up to you with those eyes whenever he wants something. Oh he's hungry. Hmm, you remember that one of the train attendants said that your ticket offered free meals as long as they were marked under the red menu.

You did pack some food with you and berries for Roland. But if the train is offering free food, who are you to deny their hospitality? After deciding to get the breakfast platter for yourself and an Oran Berry Pie for your Pokemon, you did consider buying the Deluxe Banana Sundae dessert but it cost nearly half of the Pokedollars you had with you and wasn't covered by your ticket plan.

The train ride will take around six hours to get to Levincia and two hours on a high speed passenger rail to get from there to Mesagoza. Not counting changing stations, you should arrive in Mesagoza right before the sun sets. Should give you some time to get your dorm situation handled. Especially with the whole red uniform thing.

Speaking of uniforms, you decided to wear the polo shirt one for your train ride. With the Academy's sigil sewn onto your breast pocket and the decently comfy red pants, it's not a bad fit all things considered. You folded and stored your deel in your luggage for future use. Getting some more Paldean-style casual clothes while you're in Mesagoza should probably be a priority once you get the cash.

A knock on the door tells you that your order is here. Taking the food and thanking the staff for their service, you and your Pokemon dig in. After making sure that Roland doesn't make a mess, you enjoy your meal. Idly looking out the window, you see glimpses of uniformed men and women on top of flying Pokemon patrolling the route.

Must be the Railway Military Police you hear so much about. Took over the Ranger duties of guarding human infrastructure in the routes from wild Pokemon after Ranger presence in Paldea began to decline. You wonder what their pay is like, that's a career option for you if you can make it to 6th Badge before Graduation.

With both your meals finished and Roland no longer fidgeting, you decide to try and teach them more words and get them used to their nickname. He seems to like it. You briefly switch stations at Zapapico to board a train for Levincia, making sure to not leave any luggage behind. The remaining part of the trip to Levincia you spend just doting and fussing over Roland. Who seems to like being fussed over.

As you neared the city itself you looked out the window into the landscape beyond. The Aragon Plateau is one of the most minerally rich places in the world, Tera Crystals, Iron, Copper, Gold, Aluminum, Silver and much much more. It has long been exploited and harvested, initially to feed the vast trade networks of Levincia as a Port City and now to feed Levincia's appetite as a center of Industry.

Rocky hills, mines, quarries and the rare poisonous pit lake compose the makeup of the Aragon. Despite that Pokemon thrive and live in these conditions and habitats, Steel and Poison type in particular are extremely common. The plateau is one of the few places in the world where Revavroom and its line are found.

For the city of Levincia itself, its outline in the distance is daunting. A massive sprawling cityscape that stretches across three rivers.Vast industrial complexes juxtaposed with towering skyscrapers and high-rises. Just off the coast, is an artificial island made to house its ever expanding population. It is said that the view over the city at night is one of the ten Great Sights of the region. The second largest city in all of Paldea, only beaten out by Mesagoza herself.

Even from a distance it feels overwhelming, more people in a single city than in most of the Highlands. You feel dizzy just thinking how much larger Mesagoza must be. You try to calm yourself down before the train reaches the station and you'll have to ride another thing you've never ridden in your life before, in a place you've never been in before, to go to another place you've never been in before but even larger. You're starting to breathe rapidly, finally realizing just how out of your depth you really are. Ughhh… it's not even a day yet and you're already homesi—

You're snapped out of your spiraling thoughts by Roland hitting you in the face with his tail, intoning that he's hungry. Already? Fine, you'll order another meal before the train arrives but he's not eating on the ride to Mesagoza. While you're busy placing your order on the train's telephone, Roland cuddles up to you and wraps themselves around your neck. You're already ordering his food so you're not sure what this display is for.

You finally arrive in Levincia, panic attack mostly subsided, tupperware of Oran Berry Pie in hand since you ordered a bit too close to arrival. According to the directions given to you by the nice conductors, you should be able to reach your new line in a few crossings. Shouldn't take more than half an hour which still puts you on schedule.

Traversing through the streets and stations of Levincia, putting on your best tourist voice asking for directions. Thankfully, your uniform did most of the convincing for you as most of them actually helped you once they saw its university sigil. Most of the way to your destination you saw something weird.

Sitting on a bench was a kid looking utterly miserable on the verge of tears, they had purple hair and were wearing a uniform just like yours. Obviously much smaller to account for their size but the sigil that's gotten you this far is right there on it. You couldn't tell if they were a boy or a girl, their hairstyle being long enough to make it ambiguous. Next to them was a white Beldum that looked worried and who's glaring at anyone who even looked like they were getting close to the kid, resulting in the crowd giving the bench a wide berth.

Feeling sorry for the poor kid and unable to stop your older sibling instincts, you decide to help them. Waking Roland up who fell asleep around your neck, you ask him to tell Beldum that you want to help. Getting close enough that the Beldum could see you but not too close to agitate it, you let Roland make some chirping noises at them hoping your intentions could get across.

Beldum stared at you. Its sole blood red eye gazing at you for ten long seconds, you feel like that the Beldum in those knew more about you than you knew yourself. Finally, Beldum looked and gestured for you to get closer to the kid.

"Hey… you feeling alright? Are you lost?" Stupid question Mariana, they're clearly not alright. You can already feel Beldum next to you regretting letting you near.

The kid nodded, still sniffing with tears in their eyes. Your heart broke looking at them. Where the hell are their parents!? Right, one question at a time.

"Are you alone?" They shake their head but before you could sigh in relief they point a finger at Beldum.

"I have Argy with me.. And all my other friends" they open their bag to reveal three regular pokeballs and a singular bizarre dark blue one. It had yellow protrusions that made it so that it doesn't resemble any kind of Pokeball you've seen before and parts of it glowed a cyan light. They quickly close their bag afterwards.

"Sorry… you're not supposed to see that one…" Weird, but not your concern right now.

"No one else?" They shake their head at that.

"Where do you wanna go if you're lost?" You could slum it out without a roof for a day if it meant helping the kid.

"...I have to go to Mesagoza. But I got lost here. Ms. Raifort usually helps but she's busy." Well you have a destination (and a name to yell at for child abandonment) and it just so happens to be where you're also going.

You tell them you're a student going to Mesagoza and you could help them board the train to get there. Their expression brightens, although their eyes still have tears on them. Damn, you wish you had a handkerchief.

"Really, miss? You're gonna help me?" They say, bright eyed and hopeful. You physically cannot say no even if you wanted to.

"C'mon, I know which station we have to go to." Out of the corner of your eye, you see Beldum giving you a grateful look. The barrier you didn't notice they had set up over the two of you dissipated. You hurry up with the kid before passersby start glaring at you two. As your group made their way through the metro near where the station was, you asked them their name.

"Ostia." You asked them if they had a last name "Nope. Just Ostia." You're starting to feel a headache. What the hell is wrong with their parents? You introduce yourself and Roland in return.

"Oh this here is Argy, say hello, Argy!" The Beldum briefly looks at them before turning back to you, why does it look apologetic—

'G̴͎͆̑ŕ̸̠̏e̵̖̐e̴͈̻̍t̶̠͚̀í̴̍ͅn̸̰̩̊̅g̷̯̱͑̕s̸̻̠̀̉'

A lance of liquid hot pain tore through your mind. For a few brief seconds, nothing existed other than you and a sea of agony. You barely hear Ostia and Roland panicking at you collapsing to your knees. So this is what first-time telepathy feels like. No wonder mom always said no to you trying it with Chimu. Even recalling who you are is difficult. You're… Mariana, that is who you are.

"I'msorryI'msorryI'msorryIdidn'tknowPleaseforgivemeI'shouldn'thavetoldthemto—" The kid's rambling tears in their eyes trying to help you up. Roland is chirping at you asking if you're okay. You.. should be fine, you think.

"It's fine, you didn't know I'm not used to telepathy. No harm done…" if you didn't have a headache before, you definitely have one now.

Ostia and Argy share a look. Are they having a conversation telepathically? Don't tell me someone let this kid go through that. Your pain morphs into a seething anger at the thought of them going through what you just did at a much younger age.

You pet Roland who's still wrapped around your neck to reassure them you're okay. Briefly giving Argy a stink eye, you tell Ostia that you don't need to rest but it'll be better if you could lay down on the train. With that, you two finally hurry and make it to your station. Your pairs tickets are for the Thunderbolt Line, and yeah all of the Levincia HSR lines are named after Electric-Type moves. You checked.

"So you're also a student at Mesagoza?" You ask them to take both your minds off of what just happened. Ostia nods enthusiastically. They show you their Trainer Card and there it is, right below their name. 'Registered Student at Mesagoza University.' Your Trainer Card also has it.

Both of you will apparently be traveling First Class; the Academy really shelled out for your tickets. As the two of you are led to a private cabin near the front of the train you can feel your headache finally start to go away. The room you're led to is a pretty luxurious one. You're pretty sure every single object in that room is worth more than everything you own. Above the seats are some compartments for your luggage (yours only, Ostia only has their backpack with them). You ready yourself to heft your bags up when a light blue glow takes them from your grasp.

"That's really nice of you, Argy!'' Says Ostia as Beldum telekinetically lifts your luggage to the compartments. Argy turns to you after doing so. Fine, apology accepted.

As you sit down and sink to the extremely comfy chairs in the room, Roland finally leaves your neck and floats towards Ostia.

"Don't you even dare, Roland." The Dreepy chirps a complaint in response. You are not letting your Pokemon fight a stranger, much less on a moving train. Argy narrows their sole eye at Roland, daring them to try. Ostia for their part looks excitedly at your Pokemon.

"Is this your first time seeing a Dreepy?" Man these chairs are really nice, you feel like you could fall asleep on them.

"Yea, his eyes are so big! I hear they like getting thrown around!" You nod in response. A lot of your spare time with Roland just involves you throwing them at a wall or at a distance, then your Pokemon stopping before they hit something or until their momentum stops. The little guy really enjoys it.

"Where are you from, Ms. Mariana?" They suddenly ask while playing with Roland. Ignoring the creaking in your bones at being called Miss, you say that you're from the Andosin Highlands. You spend the rest of the trip just regaling them with tales and stories about your home. Ostia listens enthusiastically, occasionally asking questions about the Pokemon that live there.

You carefully tiptoe around the topic of family and relatives, which Roland and Argy definitely notice from the looks they gave you. At least the latter seems grateful that you did so. You were so busy just storytelling that you didn't even get to sightsee from the window. Seeing the little kid happy and laughing whenever you made jokes made it okay, though.

Eventually the train's speakers announced that you've arrived at Mesagoza Uva, the primary station for the east of the city. It's where arrivals from Eastern Paldea board and depart. Hosting a number of high-speed rails, commuter trains and other regional services for that part of Paldea. You and Ostia hurry out of the train and into the station. You of course make sure to not forget your luggage on the train.

It was a couple minutes before Five PM which meant you arrived on schedule, you should have a few more hours or so to head to the Academy and find out where your dorm is going to be. At least from what the school's email told you.

As Ostia drags you out of the station and into the city proper you finally get to see Mesagoza for the first time.

And it's breathtaking.

Mesagoza is often believed to be the largest city in the world. Lumiose, Rime and Castelia often put that into contention. But being here amongst the endless thronging masses of humans and Pokemon, you could see why most people agree it's Mesagoza. Streets paved in ancient marble, older brick and younger concrete leading to rows upon rows of buildings of all shapes and sizes. Off in the distance overlooking the metropolis you can see the Imperial Palace, Home of the Arnor family and seat of the Paldean civilian government. It is a city where a person at first sight can feel its age.

But it is a city of the future as well. The noises and sounds caused by the hustle and bustle of cafes, restaurants, apartments and all the other hallmarks of a modern city. Blaring lights from jumbotrons advertising Mendoza Groups' latest Porygon Phones. The scents and smells of the world coming from concessionaires and stands selling all kinds of foods and knick knacks. The distant plume of smoke from factories and orbal workshops further down the mountainside the city is built upon. It's overwhelming…

You're starting to feel that panic attack coming back—

You feel yourself dragged by the arm and your luggage carried away by Argy's telekinesis. "C'mon, Ms. Mariana! I know a really good food place we can eat at!" Ostia excitedly drags you across and down the street from the station. You're so numb from the shock of the city that you're just letting the ten (eleven? You really can't tell) year old drag you wherever they want.

They eventually take you to a fancy looking restaurant called Kofu's Dojo. The exterior is reminiscent of Johto architecture and there's even an exterior dining area separated from the street by waist high hedges. Elaborate statues of Gyrados and Milotic frame the entrance to the exterior of the restaurant, from which a very long line is waiting to get in. It's also very blue.

Before you could say anything or express doubts, Ostia marches the both of you up to the guards and pulls out a card from their bag. And the guards just let you in smiles and all, the people waiting in the line obviously complained but were quieted down by the security. Stunned, you're led in by Ostia into the building. It's the smell that strikes you first, rich and flavorful, you're immediately hungry just by walking in.

"Little Ostia! Who's the friend!" A large well built man with graying hair behind the counter greets your companion and gestures at you.

"Hello, Mr. Algaro! She's Ms. Mariana, I met her on the train and she helped me when I was lost!" Ostia quickly turns to you in a quiet voice and asks if the two of you are friends.

"Of course we are, you little rascal." You respond while ruffling their hair. Ostia squirms while laughing and complaining that they're not little. Your group is led to a private dining area, sitting down, you make sure to keep an eye on Roland who's starting to fidget again. You pull out an oran berry for them to chew while a waiter hands you two menus. Huh, it seems they have a specific menu for Pokemon. You open the one for humans and your eyes bulge out of your head due to how expensive the meals are. One meal alone is worth all of the cash you have on you right now!

"Don't worry Ms. Mariana, Argy says you're worried about the price. I'll pay for the meal as thanks for helping me and because we're friends. Ms. Raifort gave me a big allowance, although Argy is the one who counts them." Ostia, attempting to reassure you, pulls an envelope from their bag and opens it in front of you. Inside were multiple 5000 Pokedollar bills, so much so that the envelope was filled to the brim with them.

Both of you order the Seadra set, which includes a Rice Meal, noodles, soup and a dessert. All at the customer's choice. You get Roland a Sitrus Cake and according to Ostia, Argy doesn't like eating non-metals. You feel stuffed. You let the kid have your dessert as well, it's mango cheesecake bingsu. Hopefully they don't get a brain freeze.

As Ostia pays for the bill of the meal that costs more than you own, they ask you a question as you head out of the restaurant.

"Did you have fun, Miss?" You nod in response and Ostia's face beams in delight and they turn to face Argy. Both of you are heading down the street following directions to head to the Academy. You're back to carrying your luggage yourself.

"Today was great, Argy! We made a friend!" Friend is a strong word to describe your feelings about Argy, but you can't stop yourself from smiling at their earnest joy.

Then a phone rings in Ostia's bag.

If you hadn't just spent the past few hours getting acquainted with the kid and the Beldum, and thus both their tells, you'd have almost missed it. But ever so slightly their smile strained, an involuntary flinch and Argy's sole red flashing in quickly suppressed anger.

Your smile vanishes as well, putting on your best poker face as you consider the implications. You do not like them.

"Oh Miss Raifort is calling." A perfectly neutral tone, at odds with the barely concealed whimsy that Ostia has had since the train ride.

A cold anger settles in your stomach as—

'D̷o̷ ̷n̵o̶t̴ ̸f̴i̶g̷h̶t̷ ̶h̸e̶r̸.̸ ̶D̸o̸ ̸n̷o̶t̸ ̴t̵r̴u̸s̴t̷ ̸h̴e̸r̸.̵ ̴S̴h̸e̸ ̸h̴a̴s̵ ̶p̵o̸w̶e̷r̷.̶ ̶O̶s̷t̸i̷a̶ ̵w̶i̸l̸l̷ ̴b̸e̷ ̶s̶a̶d̴.̶'

A sharp pain cuts through your mind disturbing your thoughts. You grimace and seize up in pain but you remain standing. It's painful but not as painful as it was earlier. So telepathy does get easier. But more importantly…

You stare at Argy, the Beldum, and they stare back. You actually understood what they said unlike the first time. Roland is glaring at the Beldum, angry at them for what they just did. Fine. You'll wait and see this Raifort.

Ostia did not notice your interaction with Argy, too engrossed in speaking to Raifort over the phone. Their smile is completely gone, replaced by a placid neutral mask. You exhale and repeatedly open and close your hands, which have been shaking in rage.

"...you'll pick me up now? …Okay." Ostia's voice trailed off at the end as their call ceased. Turning to you they say that Miss Raifort will be picking them up soon. And that today has been fun. All in that same neutral emotionless tone.

"I hope we're classmates, Miss Mariana—"

"I'm here, Ostia, c'mon let's go."

You snap your head around at the sound of that voice. A decent distance behind you on the street is a woman with dark-skin and light purple hair. She had glasses on her face alongside an amused expression. Wearing designer jeans and polo draped by a lab coat and wearing what looks to be expensive jewelry in the shape of Pokemon. Next to her is a Grumpig looking absolutely bored.

"C̶a̴l̸m̴ ̴d̶o̵w̷n̴.̴ ̵S̸h̵e̵ ̷m̸u̷s̷t̴ ̵n̷o̴t̴ ̷n̴o̷t̸i̸c̷e̴.̷"

Another warning from Argy. Ignoring the throbbing pain in your head you carefully smoothe your expression from the surprise of someone abruptly showing up behind. Putting on your best poker face and keeping your thoughts to yourself. Roland is quiet, likely having received the same warning from Argy.

"Miss Raifort. This is my friend Mariana." Ostia gives a deep bow at the hip towards the older woman. Raifort briefly looks at you before dismissing you.

"C'mon, Ostia, let's go, say goodbye to your friend." Ostia's face has fully deflated into something bordering exhaustion. They and Argy walk up next to the older woman. You hate this.

"Goodbye, Miss Mariana. May I see you at the Academy." At that, Ostia turns to you and bows. Argy's eye gleams at you one last time. With a look from Raifort, the Grumpig snaps to attention and they are gone. Not even a pop or a sound. Only empty air where the four of them stood. Teleport.

You and Roland release the breaths that you've both been holding. You have no idea what to do now. How can you just go on to the Academy after seeing that. Sighing and looking at the time, you at least owe it to the kid to meet them at the Academy. You hope they'll be okay.

Sensing your emotions, Roland curls up to you and tries to comfort you. You weakly smile at them. Time to get a move on.

Further directions brought you closer and closer to the Academy as the sun started to set and and the orbal streetlights of the city turned on. There's something ethereal about Mesagaza at night that you can't put your words on. The chirps of Pidoves and Pidgeys on the roofs have been replaced by hoots and squawks of Hoothoots and Murkrows further into the night you went in. Just basking in the city is distracting you from what happened earlier. One you sorely need.

You eventually make it to the front gate of the Mesagoza Academy itself, one of the largest buildings in the city. Outside the front gate, an entire portion of the upper echelons of the city has been reserved for the use of the institution. Described by the people you asked for directions as a mini-town, it has its own Pokemon Center, Battle Arena independent of the school facility ones and general store for purchasing needs. There were two dorms on both sides of the academy town. One for the nobility and the other for the commoners, and from the architecture it was pretty obvious which was which.

Within the front gate were the Academy grounds proper, there was the main building, the Rodrigo Hall, massive and resembles the old gothic style popular in the Post Dark Ages. Built in the decades after Emperor Rodrigo took Mesagoza and made it his capital. The original purpose of the Academy was to train the next generation of the Empire, Noble and Commoner, in the arts of war and Pokemon combat.

Over the centuries the curriculum began to expand to include the natural sciences and the arts, which eventually blossomed into the second building, the Felipe Hall. Slightly smaller than the Rodrigo Hall, it's built in the Baroque style originating from Rime. Operates as a center of arts and the less martially inclined fields that the Academy teaches. It also acts as the school's Auditorium, and where the First Day Orientation is going to be held.

Finally the third and fourth buildings were constructed at roughly the same time a little over a century ago. The Anna and Maria Halls serve as a Student Lounge and a dedicated Library respectively. This also coincided with the full establishment of the Academy Town and the largest expansion the Institution has seen yet. Both buildings were named after the late Emperor Maximillian's twin daughters. Who had both attended the Academy and would later champion the institution's cause in the Imperial Court.

You head on over to the Rodrigo Hall to receive your Dorm Assignment, your Student Handbook and the topic you've been forcibly avoiding for the past weeks. Your Student Loans Statement.

Every School Year, the Academy provides tests to the youth of Paldea to identify commoner-born applicants with aptitude and skill. If some are found and they pass both the written and practical entrance exams, the Academy offers a Student Loan Program for applicants unable to afford the pretty sizable tuition fee.

To summarize a lot of mathematical and economic concepts you don't understand, you owe the Paldean Government a nice tidy sum of 1,000,000 Pokedollars for the three years of your enrollment in the Academy. There are multiple ways to see it waived of course. Becoming a Champion Rank Trainer (lol) sees around 90% of it waived. Joining the Paldean League at around the 6-8 Badge Level sees half of it waived. There's also something about "valourous or meritorious service to the Empire" that would see the full debt cleared, but you highly doubt that will ever be relevant for you.

Your Student Handbook seems pretty normal, average "break the rules, get expelled" schtick. A reminder not to tarnish the proud reputation of the Academy, etc etc. Most important to you is your schedule for the First School Year of 2022-2023. Giving it a quick glance, you get a bitter reminder of how you won't be there for this year's Naadam, the summer festival of the Andosin people.

Most curious however…

"Is there an issue with my dorms?" you ask the lady at the counter who's been confirming your identity in the school database.

"Oh no, I'm just confirming that you're going to be part of Class VII, dear." Class What?

"A~and there you go, the dorms for Class VII should be the three story brown building by the exit of the academy-town. There'll be a Wigglytuff waiting outside the building so you can't miss it. Have a nice day, I hope you enjoy your time at the Academy!" You nod and thank them for their time as they hand you back your Trainer ID and your brand new School ID.

What's this about a Class VII dorm? Shouldn't you be assigned to the commoner dorms? Attempts to get a clarification got you something about your results during the practical exam getting you assigned to this class.

Utterly exhausted from your trip and the day itself, you decide to just comply and follow their directions. Eventually you do see that brown building the lady at the front desk mentioned, alongside that Wigglytuff. Having spotted you, the Wigglytuff cheerfully waved and beckoned you over.

Now much nearer to the dorms you're going to be staying at, you can get a better look at it. It seems pretty old but there's some tells that makes it obvious that it was refurbished recently. You're pretty sure buildings this old typically don't have satellite dishes.

As you enter, you find that the main lobby is actually pretty spacious but devoid of people. The lobby has two doors to its right, a set of stairs heading up straight ahead and an open area leading to what look's to be a Dining Hall to the left. You hear a voice coming from there calling you over.

The source of the voice was a woman that seemed to be in her late 30's. She wore a light blue top that showed off a visible discoloration on her skin around the neck, likely a fading scar. The top had off-shoulder sleeves that hugged slim muscle along her biceps. From what you tell from your angle, she was wearing red bell-bottom pants that clashed with the soft blue of her top. Her shadow occasionally writhed on the floor, suggesting the presence of a Ghost-Type.

Her messy long brown hair went down to her waist. Three Pokeballs hung from the belt she wore, with little markings and grooves, both from age and manmade, to differentiate them from one another. Her right leg was crossed over her left one and on her feet were worn trainer shoes. You're dealing with a professional.

Concentrated on the orbal laptop and paperwork on the table, she looked up at you as you approached. Sharp and focused eyes that relaxed at seeing you. Wearing a well practiced smile, she greated you and introduced herself.

"My name is Leaf Midorikawa, I'll be your homeroom teacher." She relaxed onto the back of the chair she was sitting on.

Taking that as your cue, you introduce yourself as Mariana Ganzorig from the Andosin Highlands. You also ask her what exactly does being in Class 7 mean. If there's anyone who should know what Class 7 is, it should be the homeroom teacher for it, of all people. She gives you a little smile.

"Oh it's not much, consider it a little social experiment." She pantomimed air quotes with her hands as she said experiment. "Normally classes are divided between Nobility and Commoners with Classes I, II, and III being for Nobles. And IV, V, VI being for the rest of masses. So Class VII is going to be a mixed Class, Noble and Commoner alike. Hence the separate dorms as well, that was going to be your next question, wasn't it?"

"It was..." you grumble. If her smile could get any wider, it just did.

"Oh, you Duckletts are just so cute, don't worry you're in good hands." Somehow, you doubt that.

While you two were having your conversation, Roland had left his perch on your shoulders to try and approach Ms. Midorikawa's shadow. Once he reached it, he tried to touch it when it lashed out at him, sending him running back behind you.

"Missy! Don't bully the kids!" At that scolding from Ms. Midorikawa, a Mismagius emerged from her shadow looking both irritated and apologetic.

"It's fine, he's a bit nosy is all" You take the opportunity to check up on Roland, there doesn't seem to be any damage. Little guy just got spooked.

"Oh, if you're hungry, Wiggly cooked some meals earlier. They're in tupperwares in the fridge so you'll have to reheat one, and only one, if you want some." You don't feel hungry, having just eaten. And with the ...events earlier still on your mind.

Actually...

"Hey Ms. Midorikawa, I have a question." Maybe your new homeroom teacher can help.

"Oh, I'm gonna have to get used to kids calling me that, huh." she said, grimacing. "Shoot, what is it?"

"Do we have a class member named Ostia? Will they also be going to the Dorms?" You hope they do, anything to get the kid time away from her.

Raising an eyebrow at you, Leaf clicked away at her orbal laptop. After a few minutes of silence they spoke up.

"Huh, you do but they won't be staying at the dorms" Fuck.

"It says they'll be staying with their legal guardian. A Professor Raifort. Some sort of scientist working for Mesagoza Labs." It seems whatever emotional turmoil you're under got noticed because Leaf is staring at you.

"You're shaking, are you alright?" How are you gonna approach this.

Carefully.

"Hypothetically, if a student was under an... unhealthy household, would you or the academy be able to do anything." You think about Ostia going from how full of life they were hanging out with you to... an emotional husk the moment Raifort showed up and you start getting angry again.

Leaf stared with eyes that looked like they could see right through you. You refuse to flinch or look away. You're serious about this. Eventually, your teacher blinks and starts typing on their laptop.

"I'll look into it. You should get some rest, kid. You seem exhausted." That's the best you're getting, isn't it. Petting Roland, who seems distressed at your state, you decide to turn in for the night. Two days before you could check on Ostia. Hopefully, Argy could catch you up to speed, they warned you about Raifort after all. You're an idiot, why didn't you get their phone number.

Before you could head up the stairs though, there seems to have been a commotion at the front door. It swings wide open and someone walks through.

Who is it?

[] Erika Furuwada: Pale face set in a scowl. Dark blue eyes with her long blue hair styled into pigtails. A worried looking Carbink trailing after her. Her white and pink cardigan, pink skirt and black leggings seem to be stained by an unknown drink. Your attempt at saying hello was met with an irritated snarl.

"Bathroom. Where."

Leaf rolls her eyes and says the women's bath is on the second floor. Erika stomps off up the stairs while the Carbink stays behind putting down the luggage it's been carrying via telekinesis. It seems to be doing its best apologetic look at you.
  • You'll mostly be interacting with Erika Furuwada for the next two days
  • Your attempt to approach the day after resulted in her snarling at you again.
  • Seems to be a surprisingly intelligent person from what you saw once Leaf coaxed them into a conversation
  • Can tutor you if you pass a DC 24 CHRM roll (Gives +250 KNOW XP if passed) (Increases to +550 KNOW XP due to traits) (Only gain a flat +100 KNOW XP that cannot be changed by traits if not passed)
  • Her room is next to yours and you think you heard muffled crying that night

[] Theodora de Medali: Ginger blonde hair tied into an elaborate bun. Piercing blue eyes that could stare at your soul. With an easy smile on her face, she greets you and Leaf as a maid around your age eagerly follows her and carries her luggage up the stairs. According to Leaf, she's a scion of the De Medali family. One of the Three Great Houses, de jure Lords of Medali and now Governor Generals of Porto Marinada.
  • You can interact with Theodora de Medali. Once her always silent maid stops glaring at you at least.
  • Knew exactly who Leaf is, to the latter's chagrin
  • Multilingual. Spoke to you in Andosin with no hint of an accent.
  • The maid technically doesn't stay at the dorms. She just goes out every night and is already there in the lobby early in the morning. Roland seems suspicious of her, specifically.

[] Nemona Mendoza: She walks in already wearing the school uniform just like you. She had brown skin, black hair with a singular green streak, and orange eyes that immediately locked on to you and Roland. A Chimchar was clinging onto her back. Before you could greet her, the words had already left her grinning mouth.

"Wanna Battle?"
  • You will be battling with Nemona Mendoza for the next two days
  • Three Minor Battles (Will Roll 3 1d20+SKLL for outcome. DC 24 to win a Battle against Nemona.)
  • Gain SKLL XP, Pokemon XP and Move XP depending on outcome. Lose or Gain Pokedollars on outcome
  • She just earnestly loves Battling.

[] Manuel de Cascaraffa: There seems to be an argument in the front of the dorm. Taking a peak you see a young man with light green hair arguing with what looks to be their butler.

"You are not following me into my dorm! I will call you if needed! Now please go!"

"But Sir! The Lord was—"

The young man slams the door shut before the butler could finish their sentence. He deflates in exhaustion and puts his head in his hands, not even noticing your presence.

The Horsea that was wrapped around his arm sees you and nudges at their trainer. Finally noticing you, he straightens up and glares at you with deep lilac eyes.

"State your business to the Heir of House Cascaraffa."
  • You'll mostly be interacting with Manuel de Cascaraffa for the next two days
  • Heir of the De Cascaraffa family. Masters of their namesake city. Foremost of the Three Great Houses.
  • A quiet desperation to get stronger
  • Can be battled in Two Minor Battles (Will Roll 2d20+SKLL for Outcome. DC 18 to Win against Manuel)
  • Gain Pokemon XP and Move XP depending on outcome. Gain some SKLL XP depending on outcome. Gain or Lose Pokedollars on outcome
  • His Butler won't leave you alone

[] Jacinto Laureano: The young man at the door introduced himself to you and Leaf as Jacinto. Well-groomed, formal and polite; the only thing that really stood out about him was the birds. A Pidove on his left shoulder, a Pidgey on his right, a Fletchling snuggled up in the pockets of the jacket he wore over his uniform, a group of Murkrow lounging on top of his luggage behind him and finally a snoozing Swablu nearly covering his mop of gray and black hair.

"Um…" you pointed at the birds.

Sighing and in a pleading tone. "Nimbus, could you please do something, we're already at the dorms. My arms are getting tired."

The Swablu chirped once and all the other bird Pokemon flew away. Jacinto exhaled in relief.

"Apologies for the untoward display. I hope I didn't give the wrong impression about me." You didn't have the heart to tell him that the Fletchling was still in his pocket.
  • You'll mostly be interacting with Jacinto Laureano for the next two days
  • Can catch a single random Common or Uncommon Flying type (requires a DC 22 CHRM roll and a DC 16 SKLL roll)
  • A very smart and diligent young man. You can request them to tutor you for a day (+150 KNOW XP) (Doubles to +300 KNOW XP with traits)
  • An uncharacteristic sneer appeared on his face once the topic of the nobility came up

So this chapter and the next one were supposed to be a single chapter, but uh. It kinda got out of hand for me so I decided to split it. Do or die, next chapter is going to be you hanging out with the winner of this vote and then Orientation day and the Week Activity vote

Minor Battles are going to be determined by a simple 1d20+SKLL. Major Battles will be restricted entirely to Gym Battles, Boss Fights, and Major Story or Rival Battles.

Slight retcon but I'm reducing Paldea's population to only around 20 Million give or take. This also extends to the World Population.

Massive thanks to Nemastraea for proofreading this update

Some very nice Charm highrolls...

A chance at a flying type, and extra KNOW without even needing a roll? Super worth it, gives Roland a friend while we're doing stuff if the rolls go well, gives us another 'mon for situations where we can't just 1vX everything with Roland, and gets us pretty close to the benchmarks Sakamander mentioned.

There are multiple ways to see it waived of course.
Let's see here...
Becoming a Champion Rank Trainer (lol) sees around 90% of it waived
Sounds easy enough, I think we can do it especially if go hard down the SKILL route.
Joining the Paldean League at around the 6-8 Badge Level sees half of it waived.
Even easier, but I'm not entirely sure about joining them unless the benefits are good enough.
There's also something about "valourous or meritorious service to the Empire" that would see the full debt cleared, but you highly doubt that will ever be relevant for you.
Just take down a rampaging god or terrorist cell, it'll probably happen no matter what.
There's our best KNOW tutor, but besides that not much else too draw me to her.
[] Theodora de Medali
Enter a nobles circle, but not so high up we're in danger immediately, except from maybe that maid.
OUR GREATEST RIVAL. Here we can train as hard as possible to grow as strong as possible as fast as possible. We'll have to if we want to keep up with her, this way lies the most likely route to Champion Rank within the first year.
[] Manuel de Cascaraffa
Still a bonus to our battling skills, and a potential in with a major Noble, with a capital N. Also likely a dive into the deep end of the pool that is politics.
Free attempt at a second pokemon and some bonus tutoring at the start, potential draw in to the class war, and I don't mean Academics.

Really, this is the option I'm most excited by.

[X] Nemona Mendoza

Putting aside the fact that she's rich, because that's honestly not important. She's probably one of the few people in our group better than us at the moment, if we train with her we'll skyrocket up the rankings just to keep up. But KnownParadox! I here you ask. Don't we need to raise KNOW as quickly as possible? That's true! But the passive KNOW gain strategy someone made has merits, and if we allow that to stack up in the background we can dedicate that extra time not spent learning to train to become the very best, then once we get up there we can spend some time later learning for KNOW.

But, as a backup vote...

[X] Manuel de Cascaraffa: There seems to be an argument in the front of the dorm. Taking a peak you see a young man with light green hair arguing with what looks to be their butler.

I also want to see what's up with Mr. Noblesse Oblige over here.

You're snapped out of your spiraling thoughts by Roland hitting you in the face with his tail, intoning that he's hungry. Already? Fine, you'll order another meal before the train arrives but he's not eating on the ride to Mesagoza.
Yes, hungry, that's totally what Roland is in this instance and he isn't helping you out, no way.
"I have Argy with me.. And all my other friends" they open their bag to reveal three regular pokeballs and a singular bizarre dark blue one. It had yellow protrusions that made it so that it doesn't resemble any kind of Pokeball you've seen before and parts of it glowed a cyan light.
Dark Blue, Yellow Protrusions, Glows Cyan.
Yeah so, Beast Ball just shot up to the top of the possibilities list.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Arvis. Really nice (lol) to see there.

Great news guys, we're going to see our full debt cleared. Murphy said so.
The source of the voice was a woman that seemed to be in her late 30's. She wore a light blue top
she was wearing red bell-bottom pants that clashed with the soft blue of her top.
Her messy long brown hair went down to her waist. Three Pokeballs hung from the belt she wore, with little markings and grooves, both from age and manmade, to differentiate them from one another. Her right leg was crossed over her left one and on her feet were worn trainer shoes. You're dealing with a professional.
"My name is Leaf Midorikawa, I'll be your homeroom teacher." She relaxed onto the back of the chair she was sitting on.
Leaf, as in Leaf Green? Our teacher was a theoretical ex-protagonist huh?
"Do we have a class member named Ostia? Will they also be going to the Dorms?" You hope they do, anything to get the kid time away from *her*.

Raising an eyebrow at you, Leaf clicked away at her orbal laptop. After a few minutes of silence they spoke up.

"Huh, you do but they won't staying at the dorms" Fuck.
Fuck. No at home bonding with Ostia. Raifort is good at her job at being the hidden BBEG by segregating Ostia from the rest of us. Makes them getting too attached to us harder.
You'll mostly be interacting with Erika Fede for the next two days
Arvis has once again missed a name in the consequences section, which has provided us a clear clue to where Ms Furuwada is from aha.

Nemona running a Chimchar on her original team feels entirely in character.

Hello Machias great to meet you.

Anyway, I should vote for Jacinto because objectively it is a really good choice. We don't need a Flying type for actual flying, given that when Roland evolves he'll go faster then most fliers anyway, but a Flying type for combat might be decent, ESPECIALLY a Fletchling. However, I am bias.

[X] Manuel de Cascaraffa: There seems to be an argument in the front of the dorm. Taking a peak you see a young man with light green hair arguing with what looks to be their butler.

My name is Leaf Midorikawa
Wait we have a maybe-ex-protagonist as our Sara?! That's unexpected.

Jusis?

Ah. Was wondering if she would be in this given the setting.

We have already picked Ostia, so let's keep following that trend.

Actually I'll also throw in a vote for Nemona, either one is fine by me

Fixed but im gonna scream
It was supposed to be a placeholder till i could find a decent last name
I am so sorry but It is my civil duty to point out mistakes and leaving the placeholder name there is a mistake I have to acknowledge, after already doing so last update aha.

Thank you for the accidental free info :)

EDIT: Maybe you should start getting your proofreader to read the vote choices too aha.

I'd love to vote for the Erika expy, but this guy seems really funny.

Both of those seem good, and I'd rather learn more about how training our baby dragon will go before committing to a second pokemon.

On top of Nemona being the best battling partner we'll get, she's also likely to be an eventual connection to Geeta, who seems to be popular with the general populace according to the Noblesse Oblige option a few prologue chapters back. If that influences anything.

But much like I'm not voting Nemona for her money, I'm not voting Nemona for a connection to the Top Champion (or whatever role she has here). I'm voting Nemona to see how strong we can get within a year. Champion Rank within a year as a challenge, Champion Rank in two as an inevitability.

As opposed to the Osgiliath Basin, lol.

Well isn't this curious? Recognizing the teacher on sight, and speaking a foreign language almost natively, that's pretty unusual.

Probably not the best option mechanically, but I kind of feel like the shared language can be a big help, and makes a fair bit of sense for Marianna to gravitate towards.

Theodora might also have problems that require punching.

Either of these sound fun. Getting to be actual friends will be tough, but having the resident smart person or suspicious scheming noblelady on our side eventually is worth it.

First of all, excellent worldbuilding and characters this chapter. I've just met Ostia and if anything happens to them I'll kill everyone in Mesagoza and then myself.

Also I've decided to be a fucking dweeb and try to ID all the characters in this update

I've decided to be a fucking dweeb and try to ID all the characters.

Kofu is the Cascarrafa Gym Leader in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, as well as being a gourmet chef. It's not explicitly clear if "Mr. Algaro" is the man himself, but the description fits, and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to franchise. Wonder what he's doing in Mesagoza, besides possibly being terrorized by an epicurean imperial prince. The internet tells me that "Algaro" is Portugese slang for "lit/crazy". Not sure how relevant that is.

Raifort is the Pokémon Scarlet/Violet history professor at the academy. Bizarrely, she's just as sus in the game, although ultimately completely benign - constantly muttering to herself, suspiciously well-informed about legends and Legendaries...honestly feels like the understudy to the real villains of the game, who never got called up and is thus just a normal teacher.

Obviously, being a professor with glasses in a Trails game, she's now probably worse than Hitler.

Also, while I'm on the subject, it's quite clear that Ostia was the first of many "alternate player characters", specifically:

[X] Plan: Sympathetic Villain
-[X] Levincia
-[X] Stranger of Paradise

"My name is Leaf Midorikawa, I'll be your homeroom teacher." She relaxed onto the back of the chair she was sitting on.

This is one interpretation or another of the female protagonist option from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the remakes of the original games from after women were invented in late 2000. She's also playing the role of Sara Valestein, the homeroom teacher from Trails of Cold Steel and a retired Bracer (which for those unfamiliar, can be summarized as "Professional JRPG Protagonist")...as well as being a conflicted former mercenary. If you were wondering why she's got such a lengthy description of "obvious badass" when she normally looks like this, that's probably Sara's influence.

Her white and pink cardigan, pink skirt and black leggings seem to be stained by an unknown drink. Your attempt at saying hello was met with an irritated snarl.

[X] Plan: A Moonlit World
-[X] Fede
-[X] You'll Make It Far Kid
Also shares a forename and appearance with Arvis's PFP. I'm.......very worried about this. Let's keep her away from the duct tape, huh?

Her awkward introduction and equally high intelligence and emotional passion put me in mind of Alisa Reinford, a Trails of Cold Steel main character, though I couldn't tell you for sure if they're related without more details. Background's totally different if nothing else.

[X] Plan: Political Powderkeg
-[X] Porto Marinada
-[X] Noblesse Oblige
I think this one's mine. She picked up one of Trails's needlessly terrifying maids along the way, it seems.

Scarlet/Violet's canonical Rival, Best Girl (besides Penny), and what's known in professional wrestling circles as a "genetic freak". Canonically the youngest person to ever achieve champion rank in Paldea and also the student council president (who knows and does absolutely nothing student council-related), but I have no idea what the crossover's done to the timeline, especially since she's got a Gen 4 starter instead of a Gen 9 one.

Honestly could probably put her in a room with Roland and create an infinite energy source of pure ¿Combate?

[] Manuel de Cascaraffa: There seems to be an argument in the front of the dorm. Taking a peak you see a young man with light green hair arguing with what looks to be their butler.

"You are not following me into my dorm! I will call you if needed! Now please go!"

"State your business to the Heir of House Cascaraffa."
[X] Plan: Heavy Lies The Crown
-[X] Cascarrafa
-[X] Noblesse Oblige

And this one picked up one of the needlessly suffering butlers.

Theodora and Manuel together remind me a bit of the two more nobbish members of Trails of Cold Steel's Class VII, Laura (the knight in shining armor) and Jusis (the snob with a heart of gold and probably the inspiration for the Noblesse Oblige background given his somewhat fucked family circumstances). I'm more confident in this association than Erika and Alisa, but not 100%.

Sighing and in a pleading tone. "Nimbus, could you please do something, we're already at the dorms. My arms are getting tired."

"Apologies for the untoward display. I hope I didn't give the wrong impression about me." You didn't have the heart to tell him that the Fletchling was still in his pocket.
Honestly my only clue on this guy (other than him having an excellent taste in Type gimmick) is the chip on the shoulder about nobles, which as stated can fit well with ToCS character Machias Regnitz.

Anyway, all that said.

[X] Erika Furuwada: Pale face set in a scowl. Dark blue eyes with her long blue hair styled into pigtails. A worried looking Carbink trailing after her. Her white and pink cardigan, pink skirt and black leggings seem to be stained by an unknown drink. Your attempt at saying hello was met with an irritated snarl.

I am not letting this woman out of my sight until Arvis confirms in red that there is no usable duct tape anywhere in the city of Mesagoza.
