Father's expression was blank once again. "Tomorrow Xiulan, I have cleared time for us in the Cloudflame spire. You will show me what you can do, and after…" He closed his eyes for a moment. "Soon I will embark on the annual perimeter march of our lands. You will attend as well. It is past time that I teach one of my children to campaign."

"Mother always said that sort of thing was not suited to a young lady," Gu Xiulan said slowly, but she didn't object.

"And your Mother and I have already had this argument," Father said, observing her again. "You will continue to do dangerous things, seek trials and challenges to feed the fire in your blood. Am I wrong? Should I forbid it, will you obey?"

Gu Xiulan looked away, unable to meet his piercing eyes. "...No Father."

Yet he seemed satisfied with the admission. "Then, training. Training in war. Training to harness your reckless nature, such that you might only burn yourself when you choose to. If I must treat you as a son to maximize your chances of survival, so be it. I am willing to endure your Mother's wrath for that."

"I-Father," Gu Xiulan stumbled on her words a little. There were a hundred things she could say, but none of them seemed right. Except one.

"Thank you."
Nice father-daughter bonding moment! :)
At least she will be properly guided with her danger seeking from now on.

The daughters in the family are supposed to follow the mothers path. That explains why the dad seemed absent. His mere personal presence in their lives could have influenced the daughters ways come to think of it!

She would have to make arrangements for Linhuo to visit the Subterranean Sun's nest. The ancient sun crow's energies were as invaluable to the cultivation of spirits and spirit beasts as they were to powering the Palace's defenses and purifying the surroundings of creeping taint.
The Subterranean Sun, a sun crow bonded to the Gu line. Probably the spirit beast of the Gu's founder, or bonded to whoever survived the death of the Purifying Sun. Likely to be Indigo tier, or Violet, at best; any higher, the Gu should have pulled up by now by simply following their ancestor's path. (I'd put them at Violet, since that'll fit with the Gu's struggle to elevate themselves. The threat of a Grade 8 White Tiger of the Han is part of the Han's struggle with the Guo, after all.)

Yanmei's counter-affinity to the Shishigui's corruption also has an additional factor: her lineage is the Sun beneath the earth! Which, naturally, has an affinity for destroying impurities of the deep earth.

Also, I notice the spirit beast is powering the Palace's formations, much like how Zhengui's father is powering the Outer Sect mountain's formations. A possibility for Zhengui's role in the future re: the Ling clan's home base.

We had agreed that she would raise our daughters in accordance with her ways, and until now I had no reason to think wrongly of that."
So that's why he wanted a son so badly: his marriage agreements had his children being divided, by sex, in who inherits the traditions of each parent. All his daughters will follow the culture of the Celestial Peaks, and his non-existent sons will follow the native Golden Fields traditions.

The sister that's like a second sun in the battlefield burns cold.

The hell is the standard for hot in Gun lands?!
Yanmei seems to be extremely good at self-control, and that might be reflected in her Way. Remember, she was the one advising Xiulan to pick up another element for her repertoire that would serve as a moderating influence. Yanmei comes off as a Tranquil Fury type (which matches their mother, who is a great example of discipline and poise), whereas Xiulan burns much more like her father's side apparently does: extremely powerfully and, often, out of control.
"But Xiulan, the men of the Gu burn bright, but so many of us burn quickly."
If that doesn't describe what our Mean Girl friend was like in the first year, nothing does.

Nice bait with the whole "shadowy figure behind a curtain of fire" thing. That was clearly meant to reference Avatar, make us uncomfortable and wonder whether Xiulans father would treat her like Ozai would.

We know of four effects that could conceivably act in this way. MSS's screen isn't perfect and thus a C-ranked comms technique would be perfectly capable of contesting it. PMR's screen auto-fails if the speaker wants it to. HDW's screen is easy enough to escape and also requires that they be "allies". Finally our domain's isolation would be just as effective against B-ranked comms as C-ranked and could plausibly contest A-ranked comms. Purely perception based comms might actually be more resilient given how our domain screws with group buffs, though that is purely supposition.

The only time our side's comms have been disrupted has been by a peak Green and even that required a degree of compliance from us. When we were being chased down by an Y'lith'kai army they found it easier to disrupt our higher-realm escape talisman than our comms.
MSS's screen tech doesn't need to be perfect, it's B rank and thus has a huge advantage against any C rank tech, and HDW being G3 means it will forever be at disadvantage in addition to that. Ling Qi actually has had her perception be disrupted all the time by G2/G3 in Cai parties, so there is no reason the same cannot apply with C rank tech in combat.

Our domain effect actually only auto-wins against D rank right now, though that will get better.

i think xiulan just needs to improve body cultivation first before spirit, dunno why had to go spirit first and literally be in pain.

well, she gonna be on campaign now so i am expecting a billion pushups and laps forever more.

Surprised at the dad's humility in accepting he was wrong in his detachment and resolving to change his parental strategy. Also interested to hear it was a joint parental decision. Really wasn't expecting him to win me over so easily. Gu family's looking interesting, I hope this won't be the last we hear form them.

im gonna laugh if next time ling qi see xiulan, xiulan is wearing cultivator equivalent of military fatigues and hair cut close to fit helmet. while nonchalantly smoking a cigarette.

Her body cultivation always lagged behind her soul. She brokethrough to Yellow before Silver, she was at Mid Silver body when her soul was Peak Yellow iirc. So she would need to favor her body cultivation a fair bit more to get Iron Body, which was what she needed for her arm to heal iirc.

A very low bar to pass in this story, but yes, he just set that much higher, surpassing Meizhen's dad as best dad quite handily.

Villain inspired characters being heroic is nothing new in this story, We have CRX, Gan Guangli, Xiulan, and maaaaaaybe Shenhua depending on whether she is indeed lacking in certain mental faculties due to her ascension, as yrsillar has implied (if she has calculated everything like CRX claims, she is villainous though and though though.)

On another note... I think Xiulan is closer to Zuko than Azula tbh. Maybe Yanmei is the Azula, we should be careful around her. (not a serious suggestion, Yrs characters, even when they are clearly expies, are unique and distinct characters very different from their stylistic inspirations)

"Now that's just mean," Zheng Nan mused. "It's not like we don't want to fight you know? We just won so hard that there's no one left, and our vassals are a bunch of sissies."

Gu Xiulan huffed. Only the Zheng would be disappointed that their vassals held no pretensions of rebellion. As if they had not stamped out dissenters with savage glee in the past. "Barbarian."
So the answer to vassal problems are apparently a lot of enthusiastic violence.

Well, that was a passive deviation from Azula's father...
Not that it's a bad thing, that particular prick can burn in hell for all I care, but it's interesting to see a character and it's surroundings grow so clearly beyond its inspiration.

Knowing Xiulan she'll make it look both good while also prim and distinguished.

... Huh. I just realised, is Xiulan what Azula might have been if raised to be a Proper Lady while competing with older, far more ladylike sisters?

Now that Not-Ozai is taking an interest in her development and leading her down the martial path, might Xiulan become more like Azula?

Given her dad is not nearly as openly scornful of everyone below him (or just everyone) and her mother is powerful in her own right? I doubt it. Family dynamics are still too different.
