Preamble To Battle 2-3-4
The law is on your side, not on the side of some exiled bastard who thought he could return if his father died. Judging from the letter Balthazar had retrieved from one of his spies, the fool considered himself a tyrant, one who threatened your family and people. You don't really give a damn how well he would rule, you wouldn't bend the knee to him.

You order your army to wheel, sending messengers to the north to contact Ritsuko and ask her assistance in taking the castle. As your forces march away, you hear a booming voice coming from the castle. "BOW BEFORE YOU RIGHTFUL KING, REBELS! KNEEL AND SERVE ME!" If that was Rigard, he has the second loudest set of lungs you have ever heard. Even as Castle Buhaw crossed the horizon, you could still hear his yells.

You order your men to ignore the shouted orders as you move south-west, the mud slowing you severely. It takes two days before you can see the first banners fly on the horizon. Looking through your Farcaster, you see the banners, but they're not what you expect.

At the front is the gold on green quill of Cilmi of Donna, followed closely behind by Alric's red on black axe. The rumors that you had gathered seemed to be true, at least in regards to their armies. Alric's army was well maintained, large and Menageri in nature. Cilmi's troops were almost entirely mercenaries, men from all the lands of Remnant, having fought wars far beyond the soil of Menagerie.

As you watch, you see puffs of smoke, the telltale sign of gun shots. A running battle has started, and you are almost directly ahead of the armies. Your pact with Alric, and your lack of a pact with Cilmi, gives you some interesting options.

[] Block Cilmi's path: Becoming the anvil to Alric's hammer could end in Cilmi's army being decimated, but, as your army would be the one catching Cilmi's troop would result in heavier casualties to your own. With messengers sent, you would be able to coordinate with Alric, but Cilmi could intercept them.
-[] Send messengers.
-[] Don't send messengers.

[] Avoid Cilmi's army: Moving out of the way of Cilmi and heading directly towards Alric, preceded by messengers, would be the safe option. However, it would give Cilmi the lead and Alric may... read it wrong.

[] Attack Alric (Betrayal): Your non-agression pact with Alric Asad was really more of a suggestion than a true agreement. If you send messengers to Cilmi and fall upon Alric as a group, you would eliminate one of the major contenders and have another in your debt. Knocking out Rigard would be easy then, and you are quite sure your reputation could take a betrayal or two.

[] Another Option (Write In, within reason)

AN: And that's the first betrayal option. These options will directly break your pacts, but some of them have benefits worth the prestige loss. Also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them.

We would help our allies and kill the competition all in one fell swoop

There are always updates that you're never quite happy with, those that seemed a bit phoned in. This is one of them for me, but to be fair it is a traveling piece with some more breadcrumbs for some of the mysteries surrounding this in-game year. The next three updates (or at least the narrative plan that I set while conceptualizing the war, which have the titles of The Meeting of Knights, The Siege of Buhaw, and The Confrontation) will be more fleshed out, since they will help resolve some of those mysteries. And create more. Quest: Shadows of the Past 1: The Island of Dr. Merlot.

Look forward to those.

[X] Hold your army back until one side has clearly lost, then fall upon the victorious army and the remains of the losing army.

And called. Looks like it's time to hammer down.

Boiler Up! Hammer Down!

Edit: Oh Dust, these rolls. Thats a natural Critical Fail!

I'll ask this now. Are there any questions you want to ask of Cilmi Of Donna? This will be in character.

We still have a chance! It might have been a crit fail for the enemy!

The image still applies, and I am honestly not invested enough to care if our character dies here. Had I found this quest before the risky decision was made to fight for the throne I would have let the fight happen, serve the victor and slowly raise our dynasty up over several generations. But that's because I like playing the slow but sure grind to the top.

I'll tell you this: the quest hasn't ended. I'm screaming at how well you did.

@Raiu the only question I have for Cilmi is what happened to the diplomat we sent to negotiate the non agression treaty

The Meeting of Knights 2-3-5
The plan set, you send out two messengers on your fastest horses to Alric's army and set to preparing your own army. Battle lines are drawn, and your men advance towards the melee.

You cannot see the sun through the heavy rain clouds, but you are sure it is nearly setting when the armies draw near. "Form a wall!" You command from the rear. "Rifles behind the spears! I want two shots from everyone before the enemy gets here!"

Yeqerta: 97 + 22 + 20 (Morale) + 10 (Well Provisioned) - 10 (Battlefield) =139
22 + 39 = 61
61 + 100 = 161
Cilmi: 1 (Crit Fail) + 14 (Martial) - 10 (Battlefield) + 10 (Charge!) = 15
4
15 - 4 = 11
Yeqerta wins with 15 degrees of success!

You count the number of volleys before the crash of spears on horses. Crack! One. Two. Three... As you hear a fourth and then fifth volley, you grow concerned. Did Cilmi wheel away from your army? Was he riding away at this very moment?

The reports from the front are enlightening. Cilmi's front line broke on the first volley, the mercenaries realizing that Cilmi's Lien was not worth their lives and routing by the second. Any momentum that they had fell apart, and the sharpest eyed among your men said they saw Cilmi himself tumble from his horse after a bullet struck him in the arm.

Your plan of being the anvil has faded, so you decide to become a second hammer. "Sound the charge. I want Cilmi in front of me before sundown."

Yeqerta: 15 + 22 + 20 (Morale) + 10 (Well Provisioned) - 10 (Battlefield) = 52
Cilmi: 30 - 10 (Battlefield) = 20
Yeqerta wins with three degrees of success.

By the time Alric's army arrives, Cilmi's mercenary army is nothing more than a scattered group of routing sellswords. Your messengers, those sent out after the battle this time, send your request to meet with him. You even had enough time to set up a meeting tent, which is where you met with the ruler of Wadno.

You look up when Alric, clad in his characteristic red armor, enters the tent. His posture is slightly guarded. He knows that you should not have been ahead of him. "Knight Alric, welcome. It's been a while since we last met."

"It has, Lady Skye. I saw what you did to Cilmi's front. I've been trying to catch that rat for a week, and you've done the same in but a few hours." His voice is loud, proud but not boisterous. It's clear from his body language that he is has other feelings than what he is saying. Calling him out would be tactless, so you decide to ignore it.

"That was a bit of luck. I just happened to run into your battle," You begin, but Alric raises a hand.

"Apologies, Lady Skye, but I must ask. Did you capture Cilmi or did that traitorous little bastard get away?"

"You don't need to worry. My men knocked him from his horse during his charge. His leg may be a bit fractured, but he's alive."

"Good. Bring him in, I need to hear him explain himself." You see that Alric was angrier than he should have been. Something more must have happened, since he is on the verge of giving orders.

You send your guards to bring Cilmi. While waiting, you bring up the topic you've traveled to tell. "Rigard Sand is calling himself Rigard Buhaw. He's entrenched in the castle." You see Alric blink.

"I thought... Damn, should have expected all the worms to come crawling out the woodwork. We'll talk about this after I get some answers."

The tent flap opens and Cilmi enters, awkwardly walking using a cane. "Lady Skye." He says in his slow, scholarly way, sounding faintly as if he was explaining something to a child. "I suppose Alric had you summon me. May I have a chair?"

Alric answers for you. "You'll stand. When we spoke at the King's funeral, you told me you didn't care who would be the next king. We had an agreement. Just why did you break it?"

"I learned that the good King secretly possessed a library that held many tomes that I do not own. I wanted them, that is all."

Skye: 42+7+10(Body Language) = 59
Cilmi: 49 + 10 - 5 (Unrehearsed Lie)= 54

"Bullshit." The two Knights seem surprised when you spoke up. "You're not doing this for a secret library. If you were, you could have just sent adventurers to take them. Be truthful, good Knight. This isn't a trial."

Cilmi looks at you for a long moment before shrugging. "Fine. I suppose holding out for more died along with my army. It will be no harm telling you, since you already know who holds the castle. Do you mind if I sit, Lady Skye. I'm afraid my arm may tire before I'm done speaking."

You act before Alric can deny you, gesturing for the guard to place a field chair for the wounded Knight. He sits with a grateful sigh. "My thanks, Lady Skye. Now, after the last king was put into the ground, I was approached by a man claiming to be Rigard. He wished my support in his claim. Initially, I refused, however, the man gave me something worth joining this stupid war. It was the journal of a scientist from the Before Times, one whose experiments were wonderfully insane." His speech is faster now, the excitement clear on his face. "It contained the location of his laboratory, a place untouched by the unwashed hands of idiots! After the war, I intended to go and claim-"

Alric butts in, his tone incredulous. "You tried to poison me, all for a damn book?!"

"It's not just a book, you war hungry buffoon." Cilmi almost sighs as he says this. "The journal is a map leading to the knowledge of the Before Times. Imagine all the relics we have found, all the technology, all the knowledge. Our chance to climb out of this damn dark age! I'd poison everyone again, it's worth more than you can imagine."

You see Alric's hand rest on the battleaxe on his hip, fingers tighten. You interject."Just what experiments did that scientist do? Also, tell me this scientist's name. It's going to be weird just saying 'scientist' constantly."

"The journal is of one Dr. Merlot, of Vale. The journal itself is written in Old Common, as well as hidden under multiple ciphers. I, however, managed to break a number of them, and his area of study is... Well, the nature of the Grimm." The way he smiled at that... Disturbed you. "As for the journal itself, it is safe in my home. No one is allowed to take it."

You switch topics. "I sent a diplomat to your court before the war. What did you do to him?"

"Oh, him? Well, Rigard, the self-styled tyrant, had ordered me to kill any messengers from the lands of my peers, claiming they were nothing but traitorous spies. That particular spy is resting in my dungeons. While I may support a tyrant, I am not a bloodthirsty man, Lady Skye."

"Alright, next question," You continue, "How many men does Rigard have?"

The questioning continues, revealing what you suspected: without the support of another pretender, you would be unable to take Castle Buhaw without losing most of your men. After Cilmi is dismissed, you speak with Alric.

"You have my thanks for capturing that snake, but I fully intend to claim the throne. I will march for the Castle and put the bastard's head on a pike. Our agreement still stands, but if you support me in the siege, I will reward you generously."

[] Support Alric in the siege: You had planned to put yourself on the throne, but you can't do it without the support of Alric. You'll settle for being a kingmaker.

[] Hold off on the Siege: Taking the castle with your own forces would drastically weaken your own, but if Alric is willing to weaken himself, you will let him. It will make betraying him that much easier.

[] Convince Alric to support you: It will be difficult to sway Alric, but you might be able to convince him to support you. (Requires an argument to be written. A winning, well argued argument can give bonuses.)

AN: If anyone has any other questions for Cilmi, I'll edit them in. This is a good source of information.

@Raiu questions for Cilmi what kind of experiments did this scientist do, what was his name and where is this journal now

Added in and fixed some errors.
I've given you life my Lusis Naturae, open your eyes.

Excellent. If we ally with Alrich, only Rigard and Ritsuko are left to oppose us.

@Raiu Does Cilmi know anything about what Ritsuko is planning? And how many troops did we lose in this battle?

EDIT: Oh shit, Merlot. Burn it!

Eh, why NOT back him.

I won't edit that in, but Ritsuko is as much a mystery to Cilmi as she is to you.

Your army actually wasn't touched that hard. Since practically everyone could shoot, you only took some minor casualties, almost entirely people with light wounds. The Nameless One really was favoring you today.

Also, forgot to add in one of the choices. Now there's three choices, one of which exchanges Rigard for a weakened Alrich in the castle. The question is: would it be worth it?

Considering how crazy and bloodthirsty Rigard seems, he needs to be dealt with quickly, and not be given a chance to escape and find Merlots lab.
