Taylor is trying to verify if she's crazy or not, and Danny's being an ass about it.
He's telling her to be SAFE about it.

Just some simple things like "Don't burn down the house trying to cook dinner", "Don't flood the living room again", "Don't violate any international treaties", or "Don't crash headfirst into a planet while adjusting your intergalactic smart phone's GPS"

Yes. He's trying to be responsible. I just hate the late helicopter action.

Ahhhh, that's slightly more understandable. It's my understanding that people tend to overreact and overcompensate when their flaws are shoved in their face. I can kind of see how going from "ignoring anything but what's in front of his face" to "asking questions about her day and what she's doing" can FEEL like he's being a helicopter parent, but he's not nearly as bad as some IRL parents.

I don't find Danny's response to be excessive or helicopter-parent-ish at the moment, he's not insisting on being at every PRT testing session, driving her to and from everywhere, or not letting her out of his sight, which are understandable in response to The Locker, but ultimately not helpful. There are real people who insist on driving their highschool age kids to school, or try to attend class with their elementary school kids, I've heard a story I'm 50% sure is fake about someone's mom coming to their job interview with them before. Compared to that Danny's 'overreaction' is just him being a good parent who's just gotten to the party late.

You know, I'm still half awake. Just killed a rant I almost posted.

Taylor is trying to verify if she's crazy or not, and Danny's being an ass about it.
Haters gonna tell you that Danny's good intentions overrule the dubious way that he goes about them and also that he's her father so he has the right.

Let's be completely clear. This is one hundred percent helicopter parenting. He isn't going... Just be safe Taylor, I'm worried. He's going, don't confirm if you are crazy or not, I have to call the lawyer and if they confirm what I'm already thinking I'm going to inform the relevant authorities whether you want me to or not.

Honestly both in terms of Taylor's reaction to the Goddess parts, and Danny's current behavior, it just comes down to the fact that ultimately what they're doing is pretty in character and understandable in the current context. It however, doesn't make actually reading about it (depending on your point of view) any less aggravating. It's a bit like the literary equivalent of the 7 year old in the back seat constantly going "Are we there yet?". Totally in character, logical, and frankly depending on personality of the 7 year old - out of character if they *don't* do it, but ultimately still makes you go 'Ugh, I wish you wouldn't do that'.

*points* Yes! That! That right there....
I couldn't figure out how to say that with minimal swearing involved. Thanks for that. :)

I think this is a perspective thing.

I feel like he's being a protective parent, perhaps a little over protective, but that's reasonable given the recent revelation in his life that he was an absent parent for the last two years.

He's not saying "Don't confirm if you're crazy or not" he's saying "Let's make sure you're not violating any laws first" Which is a reasonable followup to Inari saying "So it's not exactly ILLEGAL, but it might be kind of sort of illegal?"

Inari had the grace to look sheepish. "Yes, of course. Starting with the legal definition that I have been able to find. Opening portals is not her power. Let me make that clear, she can open portals by manipulating powers she can control that others cannot. This is, by the definition of the law, not her power, but a side effect of it. She has to learn how to do it. Now, I'm no expert on parahuman law, but the fact she has to learn to do this might mean it is illegal for her to do it. Maybe."

Taylor winced and her dad wiped his hands off with a napkin before rubbing his forehead. "Lovely. I'll talk to Carol in the morning," He held up a hand to forestall her complaint. "I want to know if we're at risk for not disclosing this. If we are, you are going to have to tell the PRT about it. Clear?"

Quite literally Inari says "I'm not expert on parahuman law" and Danny's response is "Lovely. I'll talk to Carol [an expert on Parahuman law] in the morning."

I don't like Glenn's arguments in this chapter. It's not that they're wrong, per se, it's that they're incomplete. He wants the Wards to be liked and seen as approachable by people, and Taylor can help with that, great. But why should Taylor care about that? As part of his argument, Glenn needs to talk about the alternative: all of the people who don't trust the PRT and therefore don't join the Wards program after they trigger (many of whom are teenage girls who might be able to relate to Taylor). Glenn needs to talk about the number of parahumans who become Villains or who get horrifically injured or killed while attempting the independent approach; and also the need to recruit people to fight Endbringers and other large threats.

The part where he says "I need a face I can show the world that they'll trust. I can't show a Case 53." is also wrong. That's explicitly what they were doing with Weld (if on a slightly slower schedule than what is planned for Taylor):
Cell 9.1 said:
"-but you have fans, and people are interested in you. You get higher ratings for your interviews than even the average handsome hero gets. You're second most popular for team leaders for number of youtube videos, possibly helped by a briefly lived internet meme featuring your face, and you have a blemish-free record, both academically and in your two years serving as a part of the Wards."

"Thank you."

"Provided all goes according to plan, we intend for you to become a member of the core Protectorate team within the span of three to five years. Making your face national, even international, if you are willing."

Weld isn't as popular right now, and bluntly? Compared to *Taylor*'s possible Q? His top end is far lower than Taylor's.

Ha. She can sing well, she's photogenic. She's a chatterbox in base personality, outside the tails, she acts like a normal teenage girl. She has power to burn. Cute, freindly, once her wounds from Emma are fixed, a likely talkative person? Powerful too? You don't get much better than that.

Add in to the Japanese population of the US, she's a Kitsune, and will appear to be zenko, bonus points.

Weld is good, but to make someone The Face, you need certain qualities he lacks, and Taylor Has.

(Now, if Weld and Taylor start dating, Glenn will gleefully gloat.)

She is a goddess of industry. A man of steel may be right up her alley.

 it was the first thing that came to mind, and I was half hoping it'd inspire other people to comment too.
Sorry Valdimarian, I was in a really bad mood (from illness) when I posted that.

I think there's a ton of stuff to discuss about the story but there just wasn't enough revealed to interest me in creating any theories, although I'd certainly be willing to discuss other people's.

(If Taylor really did steal/adapt from Superman's symbol I'd LOL for sure)

Yes. He's trying to be responsible. I just hate the late helicopter action.

This might be irritating to see, but it also makes sense. He's overcompensating, from not doing anything to doing too much.

Of course, alongside that, his daughter is a Cape now. As much as he might attempt to not show it, that simple fact is going to color his relationship with her.

i'd like to point out that he also might be concerned of her breaking laws/ causing thing for the relevant authorities that that she is going be working with . that's thinking a bit longer term. that and aside from "shit, she flooded the house, she might accidentally destroy it with this experimenting." he was making sure she remembers to not use her powers without care cause they does some serious damage and will very easily out her prior to her planned time. she literally almost electrocuted herself with some form of magic not too long ago by deciding to try and touch the glowy stuff. sometimes you got remind teenagers to not to do stupid shit. I as a "reasonable" teenager can count at least two times where I could have burnt my house down doing stupid shit.

This, basically. This isn't helicopter parenting. This is thinking about 'well we just signed a contract with the PRT. Let's make sure we don't make them regret it immediately'. Also, 'I like having a house'. Note, he never stopped her from actually doing it.

When I was little, one of my parents pointed out that it would be pretty obvious when we were there, for a lot of trips, since I knew what Grandma's house looked like... so I switched over to asking 'Will we be there, soon?' That was probably equally annoying. This is far less annoying, because as others have pointed out, it's less 'helicopter parenting,' and more 'taking reasonable precautions.'

The forum rules dictate I cannot take the joke to the place I would like to, so I will accept leaving it right there.
Do not worry bro, great minds think alike and I thought of a joke of that vein as I posted my previous comment. I, however, acknowledge your sense of humor while also dropping that line of thought with little more than a chuckle.

"But because we've been dealing with your domains exclusively thus far the effort for reward ratio has been incredibly high.

Two Grammar/Math errors here.

First, it should be 'effort to reward' ratio, not from.

Secondly, when a ratio is described as 'high' they mean something like say, '5:1' (otherwise expressed as 'five to one') When a ratio is 'low', it's the other way around, '1:5'. In short, the comparison is read from left to right.

The way you've written this means that domains require more effort for comparatively less reward.

Thus to express that domains make things bastly easier, it best ought to be: "thus far the ratio of reward to effort has been high"

On the other hand, any metal he touches gets stuck to him, so he is... the opposite of useful when it comes to metalworking.
He defaults to absorption, but he can also go the other direction with some effort (difficult in the middle of combat, but fine for crafting). There's a scene in Ward where he uses his power to shape some pieces for Victoria's costume.

Also, don't give them something to hold over her or reason to think she needs extra supervision. Showing that she's liable to go around breaking interdimensional treaties if she doesn't have a minder is a great way to get a minder and have some freedoms restricted. Maybe the way Danny's saying things is just rubbing some people the wrong way?

I don't know about you, but if anyone is doing something that could destroy my house, I think I have the bloody right to make sure it's done A. as safely as possible, so I don't have Cthulhu in my living room, and B. Legally, so that the damn government doesn't seize my house for something.

The first would absolutely tank my property value and the second would cost me the house period.

You know this Danny's actions become a LOT less annoying if you treat him like we generally treat Taylor and ignore the fact that the personality and actions during the pre-canon bullying campaign have nothing to do with the character we see. This is even more the case in this story given that those two years DIDN'T HAPPEN. so you can't even complain that this Danny ignored Taylor for two years.

How can Taylor know that specifically?
She told the PRT about her vision and from the reactions knows that it's not something anyone ever heard of.
