The Perfectly Normal High School: A Slice of Life Quest! (Defunct)

I'm not really a fan of Yumika as a love interest.
Frankly, neither am I. But whether Yumika likes Silas, and whether Silas reciprocates are two entirely different things.

I'd probably prefer a romantic interest from outside of the 'professional' and 'plot' spheres, which would rule out all three current Main Character Candidates. But then again, there are only so many actions in a week, and one can only write so many characters.

Personally, I'll be rooting for a total dark horse like Yuuko.
Aside from the whole Yandere thing, the way Silas idolizes her and the way she helicopters everyone makes her feel to much like Big Sis 2.0.
I really hope not. Big Sister is not enjoying her role very much.
If I had only a heart,
Then maybe
I could die
And then you could be rid of me.
You deserved better.

I'm so sorry.
Though I am still not sure why she reacted the way she did when we answered her question if we were fine with her being around forever.
We're very much in a high school anime, so the Tropes are fairly well known. Luci has done a really good job of making each of these characters distinct from each other and their archetypes, but still the archetypes remain.
Which archetype does Yuuko fall under?

The newbie Kouhai, I suppose. Big Sis kind of has an Onee-chan vibe, of course. The only thing we're really missing is a proper Kuudere. Yumika handles Yandere, Dorima is Tsundere, and Shinohara could be argued to be a Yangire, but we don't really have a proper Kuudere.

Ichiro, surely.

What we truly lack is the imouto type... and no, 8bit Silas doesn't fit despite us calling him Little SIster.

Sadly, owing to the concept of the Quest i don't think that any girl with whom we would establish a relationship with would be able to escape being pulled into the twin vortexes of Plot and Profession.

Nobody is normal, after all.

[X] [REACT] Yumika lets Silas convince her to go home.
[x] [BONUS] (Special) Her Undivided Attention

Oh dear. This is going to be interesting!

You know to be honest, I thought more people would have gone for the "Her Protection" option. Especially since, you know, Silas is about to have a kimodameshi, it might have been nice for Yumika to be actively observing Silas's movements in case *something* *weird* starting *going on*. You know. To clear up any misunderstandings! evil laughter

Although I suppose it does make sense. Those not remember past doom repeat something something and all that.

I'm going to have so much fun for these next few updates!

I am now sad that my options didn't go through, but excited to see where this goes!

Silas's concern is touching. Really touching, in fact… so much so that it makes her feel something strange and familiar and... scary. The feeling reminds her of how horribly she acted towards Hana a long time ago... and that's very scary. She doesn't want to go back to that. She promised herself she wouldn't. But the feeling lingers, no matter how hard she tries to shake it... (???, Effect will not be felt until next week)

Does this mean if we Observe someone we now have a Stalker-Chain?

Memory Fragment 1: Bakatsuoka
Quick note about memories...

...when you see me like this,

know that someone is hiding something...

...and that only I have the key to unlocking

the truth.

Memories are fickle, after all...

...and sometimes things are forgotten.

mostly by accident...

And sometimes purposefully.

If you want to see behind the lies and double-truths

Consider seeking out a person

Who'd
be

willing
to
tell
you.

Understand me? Good! Now of you go, my lovely little sakura blossoms!
To the wind with you!

Memory Fragment: Bakatsuoka
It's nearly midnight. Not even the sound of car engines or trains can be heard from within the living room. The television is on, playing a rerun of some popular show neither of them care enough to pay attention to. Yumika is curled up in the blankets, hugging them snug around herself, while Hana sits in the seat opposite of her, shaking her head and clicking her lips.

"Bakatsuoka." Hana bops her on the head. "That's what you are. You're crazy. You talk about Mikado-kun like you're... like... like you're Toko Fukawa and I'm your Byakuya Togami, or something." She looks sideways. "Honestly, though, I have to admit I think that's really... cool."

"Hana-chan." The sound of sheets being moved around. Yumika rotates her body to face her. She is still completely covered in blankets. "You know I don't know what either of those are..."

"I know." She smirks. "I just like exercising power over my victims."

"I'm a victim now?" Yumika says, confused. "I thought you were just saying I was an - "

"It's a joke, Bakatsuoka-san."

"...oh."

Hana cackles heartily at that. Her giggles fill the room. The fluorescence from the television screen seems to be dimming. The moon is so high in the sky.

"I don't really understand you, you know?" Hana says.

Yumika's face sinks into her pillow and she keeps quiet.

"You're... you're so..." Hana considers what she wants to say, but the words peter out into nothingness.

"...I-I get what you mean," Yumika says quickly.

"It's just, you always seem so... like you're holding back," Hana tries to articulate herself. "You're... you're more intelligent than most people, especially people like Mikado-kun and his sycophant friends. But you always act like... like a baka. It's like you
try to be Bakatsuoka-san sometimes."

Yumika sniffs, and doesn't respond.

"...seriously?"

She giggles sadly in response.

"You shouldn't torture yourself just because you want other people to like you." Concern is written on her face. "You need to be more honest with your feelings - "

"I am being honest," she insists.

"But you're…"

"I'm... nothing is wrong with me, Hana-chan. You can use whatever words you want to use - yandere, crazy, Bakatsuoka. But nothing's wrong. I'm fine. I'm normal - a-and... most of all, I'm being honest with myself."

Hana has to take a second to process that. She has a strange look on her face. "...you're strange. I… don't think that's a bad thing, though." She smiles and says nothing.

"Thank you…" There are stars twinkling in the corners of Yumika's vision. She feels like she's on top of the world. She can't believe she used to think Hana was a bad person. She was an absolute good - a , a friend. This is what friendship feels like, she thinks.

And if that's what it feels like…

...then it's worth protecting.

It's alright if she doesn't know.

Because… she has to protect her, right?

She has to protect this feeling.

By any means necessary.

<><><>

"...what are you going to do with that?"

...

"M-Matsuoka-san? ...Matsuoka-san?!"

<><><>

"What. Did. You. Do. To him?"

"I - I - h-how - ?!" Yumika stammered. She thought she'd be able to obfuscate and talk her way out of this - Hana was her friend! Her best friend! Surely she'd understand!

Yumika was jerked forward as Hana violently grabbed her by the tips of her blazer. She was staring at Hana's pupils now. "Mikado-kun didn't even show up for class for the first couple of hours, and when he does it's only because his little sister drags him to class, and now - now he… he doesn't taste right! It's not normal! He's not normal! You're not acting normal, either!"

"I didn't do anything to him!" Yumika pleaded. "I - IYAA - "

Yumika was just as suddenly jerked backwards, and a sharp pain rattled across her spine as Hana slammed her against the wall behind her.

"Don't give me that. You're lying." Hana growled. Her teeth were bared. "I can tell when you're lying. Tell the truth."

Yumika couldn't believe it. "No… no you can't!" Yumika exclaimed. "T-There's no way you can tell! That's impossible - "

"Answer the question!" Hana whisper-screamed. "What did you do?!"

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Yumika wailed. "I… I… I - I - I - I - I - "

Yumika felt out of breath. She wasn't thinking right. Any more and she'd… she'd start yelling back. She didn't want to yell back. She didn't want Hana to hate her more. What had she done? Was she the bad person? She didn't want to be the bad person. "I… I wanted to make him feel bad. So I… I made sure we were alone. And I threatened him. I… I made him promise never to bother us anymore. I… "

"That's not enough! You've made him freaking catatonic! I want to know how!"

"I-I don't know, okay?!" Hot, wet tears were flowing down her face now. "I don't know! A-All I did was yell at him! I just w-wanted to make him scared! I never intended to hurt him for real!"

Yumika couldn't see Hana's face. She couldn't see anything. Her eyes were watery. She looked to Hana for judgement - for anything. She must be disgusted with her. She must be.

Hana was looking back down at her imperiously. "You... " she started. "You... you're going to make this right, Bakatsuoka. You're... you're too... I'm not going to just let you do this to yourself...!" Hana snarled.

"W-Why do you care?"

"Why do you not?!" Hana screeched.

"I..." Yumika gulped. "I do! I do care! Really, I do - "

...I do...

Green=Yumika?
Purple=Hana?
Orange=Mikado? (which I'm fairly sure is the last name, but I could be mistaken)
Cyan=????
Pink=????
So that's fun, also something to pay attention to in other such memories...

At least we can be reasonably sure who the invisitext character is for this color scheme heh. Also something to note is that the title for this fragment is in the same blue as the word "truth" in the note.

Wow, finally finished reading. This was quite a ride. Interesting story of a Totally Normal High School. Where Nothing Unordinary Happens. Just Sunshines & Rainbows. Full of Drama.

Now that I'm here, I have to wait once again and speculate on what's gonna happen. Hopefully Hana and Yumika make up and be friends again.

I don't think it's lying, just something hidden there. So when Hana stops speaking, of course there's a purple bit - it's probably what went unsaid.

If it's not lying (edit: on purpose, I mean) it's got to be remembering differently from the truth, which is a coping mechanism.
I think this has everything to do with the people you talk to to get insight into the memory.

Consider that the memory was first unlocked when Yumika confessed the circumstances behind making (and breaking) her promise to Hana. She told Silas everything she was willing to tell, and it stands to reason that whatever is missing, she either doesn't remember well or is purposefully censoring out. We know she is very good at self-control, and can correct her statements on the fly.
Yumika snapped her head back up; she forced her face to look impassive. "S-Sorry for my reaction, of course! Aha… what I mean is, that's very… unexpected, Sai-kun."
"I wanted to make him... to make him... I - I - " I wanted to make him hurt. "U-Um… I just wanted to make him feel bad about himself."
I forget the specifics of what she said, but I - "
[...]
Focus, focus... now. Speak. "...I remember that she didn't want me acting like a motherhen to her.
However, she is not privy to Hana's thoughts, and thus they remain hidden behind purple text, even though Hana is neither lying nor misremembering anything - it's just not something that Yumika, our first 'witness', would know. Or remember. (Or want to remember)

Similarly, whatever happened between Yumika and Mikado (possibly involving sharp implements and snipping sounds) remained between them, and so only these two people hold the keys to the scene in the middle. The readers know something happened, because Yumika said as much, but she does not want to delve into specifics since it's a point of shame for her. Hence the green ellipsis. The other participant who could shed some light on the matter is Mikado, but he can only tell what he saw and not what Yumika really thought at the time.

It's an indication that says 'you'd get more if you knew these people better'.

So, anything written in blue is truth
Blue color is reserved for author's notes, interface text, and for some reason I can't really fathom, Big Sister.

So blue is probably 'as objective as you can trust the writer to be'.
