I really don't think the vigilant approach is the right one, but I could be wrong. This thing is stealing from people who probably have higher perception than Zhi does. I suppose that if it's mirroring the moment we stole from Jin Yazhu it might steal from crafters who are distracted and tired, but we can't be certain.
It depends on how well the creature can cloak itself—SEG's anam vision seems potent enough to detect the presence of Disaster Anam, which I doubt many people can detect without a specialized anam ability.
That said, I'm wary of our Tiaoyue-modified vision mucking things up, unless we hunt for it at dusk or in a low-light setting.
Interviewing the crafters could also give us a sense for what kinds of crafters it robs from. Tired crafters, distracted crafters, crafters that bully their rivals? It might even like to steal at certain spots, which could narrow down our search.

I think the DC would probably be lower with this approach. Also, better to learn more information from the sources before trying to sus out who/what it is. Basically, get more info first and we can go from there. It seems like going straight to observing people is skipping a step.
So... just wanted to voice my concerns about the Vigilance/Perception plan since the vote is still open
While I get that our perception is higher... we have a debuff in well lit areas, and I can't imagine that the creators garden is going to have bad lighting. Artisan's need to see what they're doing after all.
Also, while we DO have a secret weapon, the SEG's boosted 6th Sense... I just want to point out two things.
First, that while the enhanced sixth Sense shows us ALL the anam, Kong Zhi hasn't really spent enough time in the garden to know what should be there and what shouldn't. So I kindof doubt he'll be able to spot a thief that way.
Second, Remember when Kong Zhi decided to scan one of the disciples judging our duel with Jin?
And find nothing. Or rather, you find too much. Xiao Mu is practically bursting with anam, and it doesn't seem focused in any one place in his body. Instead it weaves throughout every part of him, constantly moving and churning, racing along so quickly that you can't even hope to get a sense for it's aspects.
The judge puts down the Vitriolic Retort and moves to the Widow's Ward. As he begins turning the beads to get a closer look at the runework, he mutters, "Glyphs seem in order. Smith is competent, if obscenely rude. Should focus more on his own challenges instead of prying into one's personal space before something unfortunate happens to him."
You pull back your sixth sense like it's encountered a hissing cobra and incline deeply. But before you can even begin your mixed apology and question- it's possible to tell when you're being searched by someone's sixth sense?!
Kong Zhi using his 6th sense to scan another Disciple was not only noticed, but was considered Obscenely Rude. Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid, but I can't help but think running around with our Sixth Sense cranked up to 11 might get us in trouble if someone from a higher circle notices and decides to take offense.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Maybe I'm seeing trouble where there is none, but I figure it doesn't hurt to voice my concerns while the vote is still open
It seems unlikely that this is something as simple as spotting a thief in action, otherwise I would expect that to have already happened by now.
Perhaps there isn't even a thief? Something else might be making hammers disappear.
Attempting to collect more information about this anomaly seems a more sensible approach. (Although I'd be tempted to lean towards laying out a load of trackable rune inscribed hammers, but that sounds costly.)

We have recently won a crafting duel. That may offer some advantage when talking to crafters there. Tho I'd really like to see our new eye in action when looking for thief during the night.
That would probably be a good idea if we had prep time. I don't think it would be hard. But we would need materials and time to do it. So basically we would be spending some points to get some more points, but also spending time as well. Basically, I think we would lose more (time, materials) than we would gain (sect points) in that scenario.

--------------------------------
Slowly, the line inches forward. Slowly, the crowd of disciples thins as their business is concluded and thickens once more when newcomers take their places. Slowly, the pillar outside the Assignment Hall fades from a brilliant light to a dull glow. And quickly, you think about your plan of action.
By the time you make it to the front of the line your mind is made up. With this patch over your eye, your chances of catching anyone on patrol are slim at best. And while suckering in the thief with work of your own is tempting, you don't trust yourself not to get lost in said work. That leaves one and only one course of action in front of you: the investigative approach. You will seek out those who have lost hammers to this thief before and pick their brains for what they know.
When you approach the clerk to hand in the assignment notice, you're given a good place to start. Instead of a contact to report to, you are handed a small scroll. Unfurling it reveals a list of names and dates. "Disciples who have reported their loss," the Clerk tells you, "along with when it was discovered."
You bow in thanks and the Clerk waves you off. "This is far from the first time this assignment has come across my desk- you can thank me by actually completing it. You have a day to report your findings before it is re-posted on the board. Good fortune to you."
With those inspiring words in your ears, you're off, taking advantage of the space around you to fully unroll the scroll. It contains a startlingly small number of names, and the dates are all fairly recent- the oldest is barely two weeks old. Considering the reward being offered, you would have thought this thief to be a long standing menace, but it seems to be a surprisingly new nuisance.
But though the list of victims is short, it rapidly grows shorter when you arrive at the Garden.
As you quickly find out, just because someone's hammer was stolen does not mean that they are willing to speak with you. Most smiths and charmcrafters have work to do, and answering questions about a single stolen tool is no reason to delay their current projects. Even those that are not actively in the middle of crafting still find a reason to put you off. In some cases, you're barely able to get a word out before you're brushed off and sent on your way, as if you were nothing more than an irritating fly.
Persuade Check: 3d10s7(1.1). Dice Rolled: 9, 9, 7. 3.3, rounded down to 3 Successes!
In the end, in an entire afternoon spent nagging people, you only find three disciples willing to speak with you.
The first of those is only too happy to talk with you. They are practically overjoyed to see you and usher you into their workstation with a dozen small bows and a smile so obsequious that you will probably need to jump in the river at the memory of it. "Good day, Kong Zhi!" he greets you. "It is wonderful to see you once more, and I am delighted- if not surprised- that you have taken my invitation!"
His words give you pause. You stop and scan him with your good eye, looking him up and down. He is a rotund disciple, almost one and a half Ming Hui's, and his hair is set in an absurd series of braids. From the way he's talking, he has clearly spoken with you before. But while you know his name is Zeng Kang from the list, you would swear on your Father's life that you have never before seen him.
To cover your discomfort, you nod and force your best smile on your face. It isn't very good- more a grimace than a smile- but still, it's something, and the charmcrafter doesn't seem to notice any inadequacies. "Of course," you grit out. "I am pleased to be here- though I must admit, I am here for other business than… what we discussed."
"Oh?" Zeng Kang responds. "Please, then, just tell me what you need." You nod and go to do just that, but are interrupted before you can even get a word out. "Oh, but first, please allow me to tender my…"
His eyes flick over your right side and you can almost hear his thoughts. Should he congratulate you for your changes? Should he apologize? Has he already made a mess of things by even pausing to bring them up? What is the best way to tackle this whole situation?
You head him off by raising your hand- your left hand and waving him off. "No need," you answer. "I appreciate your well-wishes. But now, if I could, I have some questions to ask about your reported-"
"Ah, of course!" the charmcrafter cuts you off once more. "My report! I should have known that someone of your esteem would come by to look into it! Come, look!"
He turns and bustles back deeper into his workshop. You have no choice but to follow him past several thick blankets strung up over cables until you reach a spot so dark that your good eye struggles to see through the shadows. But there is one softly-glowing object that pierces the gloom and draws your focus: sitting on a table is what looks to be an armband woven of dark, coarse leather that gives off a soothing radiance.
"What is that?" you ask despite yourself.
Zeng Kang puffs up at your interest. "Why, it is my latest experiment!" he booms out. "As I said, I have been experimenting with a new balance of starlight and sand for my projects, and I believe that I have found a sustainable aspect-balance with this!"
He gestures at the armlet with a broad flourish. "I began with the diagram from the Centennial Armor and experimented from there. First I removed everything but one pauldron and worked to downsize it further from there. Even that was a struggle, but after several words of wisdom from my honored seniors, I was led to the diagram of the Glassblown Amulet. While one ordinarily would not see much of a connection between the two, I-"
Alright, this is honestly a touch fascinating, even if it does rely on such foolishness as diagrams, but you are not here for this. You have actual business to attend to and-
Oh, yes! That is where you have met Zeng Kang before. He was one of the several who accosted you after your last duel before you fled with Nokai. He spoke of experiments with starlight and sand- it is good to see that his work is bearing fruit. But that is not why you are here.
"Honored brother," you say, interrupting him mid-word. "While this is interesting work, it is not why I am here." At his confused look, you continue, "I have been sent by the Assignment Hall… about your stolen hammer?"
Zeng Kang frowns at your words. "That?" he grunts out. "But that is such a pedestrian matter. I hardly see why you should trouble yourself with the doing of the dastardly Ren De. Would you not instead prefer to try on my work? I assure you, you shall not find it's equal when it comes to defense in the entire circle!"
Again, you are tempted, but you have a job to do. "Ren De?" you parrot. "Who is that? Do you believe they have something to do with your missing hammer?"
"Of course he does!" Zeng Kang exclaims. "Ren De is another disciple of the Ninth- one with half as much skill as I and barely an eighth as much talent as the honored Kong Zhi. He dares to claim his own armor superior to mine and would do anything to lower my standing in the eyes of the Garden. It was surely his doing that separated my hammer from my side- though I doubt he would have the nerve to do so himself! No doubt he hired a less scrupulous agent to do his dirty work!"
It appears that you have somehow hit a sore spot you didn't even know existed. Zeng Kang has only begun to spew invective directed at Ren De, and he continues to do so without thought or effort. Minutes pass as words slip from his mouth, each one another poisonous barb directed at his absent rival. And no matter what you do, how you approach the subject, or how you attempt to change the topic, his words only come faster and harder.
In the end, you make your excuses and leave the darkened workshop with Zeng Kang still muttering invective behind you. There will be no useful information extracted here- unless Ren De does indeed turn out to be the thief, and you highly doubt that. Not unless he stole hammers from another dozen disciples just to hide that Zeng Kang was the true target.
...which, according to Zeng Kang, is exactly the kind of thing Ren De would do. You will keep the possibility in mind.
The next disciple you question could not be more Zeng Kang's opposite. For one thing, his hair is kept in a reasonable, if long, style. For another, he is much thinner, with high cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass and narrow, delicate features that resemble those on a portrait more than anything else. He also, when he introduces himself, makes no claims at being the best charmcrafter in the circle.
He is, however, still thrilled to meet you, though he tries to hide it.
"It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Kong Zhi," the disciple greets you. "I am Shen Guanyu of the Ninth. It is my honor to host you today."
"My thanks," you answer rotely, eyes sweeping across Shen Guanyu. He is dressed in the normal robes of a Ninth Circle Disciple, though one thing on his person is certainly not standard issue. Wrapped around his bicep is a long length of rope tipped with a sharp blade that practically vibrates with anam. You nod at it as you say, "Your work?"
Shen Guanyu bows slightly at your regard. "Indeed it is," he answers. "The first charm ever crafted by my hand." He reaches up and unwraps the cord, revealing it to be a rope dart of simple if sturdy design. "I've no formal training in the charmcrafter's arts save what Elder Yixue imparted, but I am pleased enough in it's form."
"Oh?" you ask. "You do not come from a charmcrafting tradition? Why come to the path now?"
The disciple gives you a small, almost guilty, shrug. "It seemed interesting," he explains. At your look, Shen Guanyu elaborates, "My own family has a tradition of refining. It is interesting and rewarding work, but my brothers are already far better at it than I could ever hope to be. So when I learned the basics of charms, I decided to see if it was the path for me."
He shakes his head. "Any who say that refining is more complex than charmcrafting are misinformed," he sighs. "This art is far more demanding than my own family's. It took me months to properly diagram my dart, let alone bring it into existence. My slippers-" he taps his toe to the dirt, drawing your attention to a pair of shoddy sandals, "-were no less difficult. And even those pale before my current task!"
Despite his words, his tone is burning with joy. You can't help but smile; seeing someone else discover the wonders of the craft is a rewarding experience unlike any other. But as much as you'd like to learn more, there is no time for that. Zeng Kang already ate much of your time. You cannot waste any more of it.
After remarking on how well formed his slippers seem to be, you change the subject, dragging it to his lost hammer. At your words, Shen Guanyu shakes his head. "My apologies for wasting your time," he answers. "Had I thought that it would trouble you, I would not have bothered reporting it. Truly, it was no great loss."
"No great loss?" you repeat, barely biting back your instinctive response. He's new at this… he just doesn't know any better. "Brother, it was one of your tools. It may have been humble, but it was still a loss."
Shen Guanyu shakes his head. "It really was not," he answers. He gestures towards his tool kit, where your eyes fall upon another dozen hammers. "I have many more just waiting to be used."
"...really." Your response comes out flat and cold, even to your own ears. "You just… have spare tools."
"Of course," Shen Guanyu answers. "It would be foolish to do otherwise. My dart required highly corrosive aspects- poison, beast, even treason." He shakes his head. "Those things leave remnants on my tools. If I did not replace them regularly, they would simply break in the middle of a task."
Persuade Check: 3d10s7(1.1). Dice Rolled:10, 6, 3, 9. 2.2, rounded up to 2 Successes!
"I see," you answer, slowly reminding yourself that not everyone has access to miststeel and that he is not the most disrespectful charmcrafter to ever lift a hammer simply because he doesn't use his tool to its last breath. "And is this… a common state of affairs for you? Replacing your tools so regularly?"
"Indeed," comes the answer. "I must replace most of my tools regularly. Nothing can stand up to the aspects that I work with. Half my time is spent travelling to the trash yard and back."
"And was it during one of those trips that you discovered your hammer missing?" you press, forcing yourself to move on.
As it turns out, yes, it was on one of those trips to the trash yard that Shen Guanyu's hammer vanished. He had taken a box of his scraps down and returned to find his tool roll open and his next hammer missing from it's sling. No amount of searching had revealed it, and Shen Guanyu had not noticed anyone or anything nearby. He apologizes and forces himself to think harder on the details, but there is nothing more he can recall. You leave him shortly thereafter, bidding him to contact you should anything else occur to him.
The third and final disciple you are able to convince to see you is not one who you think would dispose of their tools so callously. In fact, from the way her eyes widen and desperation infuses her every movement, you highly suspect that Chai Ling of the Eighth Circle would sooner cut off an arm than lose one of her precious tools.
It is an impression that is not broken when she practically breaks out into grief-stricken sobs when you tell her why you're here. She threads her fingers through her long, curly hair, and stares up at the ceiling as if wondering why the ancestors would abandon her like this. "You?!" she sobs out. "They sent you?! A Ninth Circle neophyte who does not even set foot within the Garden?! You are the best they could scrounge up?!"
Chai Ling shakes her head and lets out a moan that sounds more animal than human. "At least the last investigator had pretensions of competence! Yao Zexi was not the most skilled, but their heart was in the right place! But now we're left with… ugh."
Despite Chai Ling's words, you're relieved. She is clearly distraught over her missing hammer. If you had approached another disciple that could not care less that their tool was missing, you may have said something unkind. As such, you are more than willing to forgive her a few harsh words.
"I understand that these are trying times for you," you console her. "But I assure you, I am taking this task as seriously as you are. So please… if you could answer my questions, I would be much obliged."
Chai Ling rubs at her eyes and blinks before giving you a short nod. "It's hopeless," she sobs out. "But fine. Ask your questions."
"Thank you," you answer. "Now, could you please tell me about the day your hammer went missing?"
Another groan of anguish is your answer. "Again?!" she cries. "That's just what the last investigator asked! And they failed! If you cannot forge your own path, then why-" she cuts herself off with a click as her mouth slams closed. Then she pinches her brow and starts anew.
"There was nothing out of the ordinary happening on that day," Chai Ling recites, clearly repeating something she has said before. "I was working on a task assigned to me by my mentor, Honored Elder Sister Ame Jichong; it was turning raw ore into ingots for her later use. I was using my hammer to press the metal into the proper shape. I placed it down for a brief moment, and when I went to retrieve it once more, it was nowhere to be found."
Oh, she works for Ame Jichong? Interesting, but not relevant. "And did you see anyone-"
"No," she barks out. "I was in my private workshop. No one else was there, nor is anyone else even allowed to be in there without my permission or that of the Honored Elder Sister. And no, we have no enemies, and none would wish to inconvenience us. We maintain a policy of strict neutrality within the sect; all must leave their disputes outside should they wish to contract our services."
From her tone, Chai Ling is clearly done talking. You prod her from another angle, but don't get anything more rewarding than a hissed response and cold silence. And a request to see her workstation to inspect the scene is met with naught but a frosty glare. You wind up simply bowing, apologizing for her loss, and making your way from her side.
After Chai Ling, you approach several other disciples, but none are willing to speak with you. In lieu of more information, you go back and ruminate on the leads already retrieved. Zeng Kang was sure that Ren De was behind his own misfortune, so you spend some time investigating the armorsmith's rival. As you suspected, it is a dead end. Ren De has other disciples who swear he was cycling alongside them the day Zeng Kang's hammer went missing. That leaves you with Shen Guanyu's tool habits, and your suspicion that the perpetrator honed in on him at the trash yard, but you find no further evidence upon inspecting the dumping grounds.
In the end, your search ends as Chai Ling thought it would: fruitlessly. Your twenty-four hours expires with nothing to show for it.
Assignment Failed! 0 Points Awarded!
It's with heavy feet and a heavier heart that you trudge back to the Spire. You don't even bother returning to the Assignment Hall once you are certain a day has passed. You know that a failure has already been assigned to you and that the task has been reposted. Perhaps later, you will venture back to see if someone else captured the hammer thief, but for now, you have had a long day. You just want to go and make up for your failure to avenge the tools; your own are certainly in need of some attention.
When you make it back home, the Spire is alight with a glow emanating from the second floor. You pull the door closed behind you and push yourself up the stairs to see it's source. A quick inspection shows that you are not the only one within the Spire. Jai Fa has not yet returned, but Jai Shouxi greets you with a friendly wave as you make your way into the kitchen.
His smile flickers and vanishes as his eyes take you in, twisting into a sympathetic grimace. "You look like you have had a difficult day," Jai Shouxi states. "Is all well?'
You wave off his concern. "It could be worse," you answer. "But yes. I…" you shake your head. "I was unsuccessful at an Assignment. Failure… I do not enjoy it."
"Does anyone?" Jai Shouxi answers rhetorically. "I cannot say that I have ever encountered one who does. But I assure you, you are in good company. Almost all of us have failed an assignment at some point. This is but a temporary setback; success will find you once again at a later date."
As he speaks, his hands are moving, dropping a sachet into boiling water and stirring it with a flick of his finger and an exercise of will. A moment later he pulls the pouch out and slides the cup to you. "Here. Drink up. It will not cure what ails you, but it will certainly please your tongue."
You do so automatically and find him quite correct. The tea brings with it notes of orange and cocoa with just a hint of sweetness. You eye it appreciatively. "Very nice. Is this the fruit of your own labor?"
"Oh, no!" Jai Shouxi answers with a snort. "It is one of my own recipes, but I assure you, that is not the tea I made for Elder Yixue. Should you have a cup of that, I am now obligated to charge you on behalf of the sect."
You have to blink at that. "Excuse me?" you say. "The sect… is charging for cups of your tea?"
"Indeed they are," comes the satisfied response. "As they should! The final recipe was, while not as potent as I hoped, quite a gem if I do say so myself. One sip washes away fatigue like a good night's sleep, and a cup can bring one energy as if just rising! Elder Yixue herself made me swear an oath that I would only brew it in exchange for appropriate recompense- and that is not an oath I swear lightly."
He sighs and rolls his eyes. "Even sister dear must pay should she wish for a cup. It is truly an irritating stipulation, but an oath is an oath. But enough of that- I have news. A delivery has arrived for you!"
Thoughts of tea- both what you are drinking and what the sect is charging for- vanish from your mind. "It has?" you ask, heart instantly leaping to your throat. As far as you know, you are expecting only one missive: one from your family. Auntie Bi said that Kong would find a solution for your… changes. If you have a letter from them now…
Ignorant of your thoughts, Jai Shouxi nods. "Yes indeed," he states. "It's under your chair; I did not want to invade your space by placing it in your room myself."
You nod a thanks to him for his consideration and reach down below your seat. Sure enough, a small parcel awaits you there, tied closed by thin twine. You slice it free with your right fingers without a second thought and unwrap it just as quickly. Inside the paper is-
It's a purse. Just a purse. Opening it up reveals that it contains your allowance.
10 Bronze Talents Gained!
But just your allowance.
"Is that all?" you ask Jai Shouxi. "There was nothing else? No letter, no second package?"
Your friend spreads his hands wide. "There was not. My apologies if I led you to believe that there was more."
You let out a low breath. No, the fault was yours. Auntie Bi only just left. The idea that she could have reached Harmony, brought word to your parents, and instantly sent a solution to your issues is wishful thinking at best.
But still…
You throw off your melancholy and force a smile. "No, it is nothing. Thank you for taking it in."
"It was no trouble whatsoever," Jai Shouxi answers. The two of you lapse into a comfortable silence as you force the clouds from your mind, Jai Shouxi watching you with an inscrutable expression all the while. He finishes his own cup and refills it, topping your cup as he does so. As he finishes pouring, he asks, "So, how go your preparations for the deeps? I know Fa is hard at work on her own; I cannot imagine you are doing any less."
The question jogs something in your mind. "They go well," you answer. "Though I was hoping to ask you some questions about that very topic."
He quirks an eyebrow and invites you to continue, which you do without pause. "My own techniques need more refining before I can truly feel comfortable relying on them, and that is something I aim to do sooner rather than later. As such, I find myself in need of pills- pills of Wood, Earth, Beast, and Sound. Would you be able to procure such for me?"
Jai Shouxi chews his lip as he thinks. "I could perhaps turn my talents towards the creation of such pills. With those aspects… you would need three pills. Earth and Wood can both be found in the Stagheart, while Sound must stand alone. The Choir's Note should serve that purpose- and making Heartbeat for the Beast Anam is simple."
He looks back at you. "Am I correct in assuming time is of the essence?"
"You are. I would prefer to have them as quickly as I can so that I can take them and integrate my techniques before the expedition."
"Of course," he absently responds. "Then there is no time to experiment with combining the aspects further. To cover all of them, no less than those three pills will do."
Jai Shoxi nods as he finishes whatever calculations he is running in his head. "I have a list of orders that I must fulfill before anything else. But if I hurry, I could get to work on your own requests. Do you plan to depart towards the end of next week?" At your nod, he continues, "Then I could have a batch ready for you before then- sooner even if I start immediately."
"And how much would such a thing cost me?" you press.
"I can make perhaps… eight pills for you in that time," comes the quick response. "At least, eight pills of one aspect, less if you want the earth and wood to be as one. I would say that four points a pill seems fair- eight for the Stagheart, as it is trickier."
"Can the cost be brought down any further?" you ask with a wince. "Perhaps in trade? I have several materials that I could be convinced to part with. The shell from the crab vestige Fa and I slew could perhaps be used in lieu of your own materials? Or I could pay in installments?"
Jai Shouxi is already shaking his head. "The shell… it would certainly work well with the Heartbeat, but I would have to grind it myself to use it properly. That would take time, time you do not have. And as for installments… yes. I could make that work. Half down would cover my materials if not my time; I would be willing to wait until after you return from the Deeps to set a deadline to receive the rest."
That's better than you'd thought you would get but worse than you hoped. You give Jai Shouxi an appreciative nod through a pained grimace. "My thanks. I shall let you know if I need your services."
"Do so quickly," he bids you. "If I do not receive a request soon, I will be bound to fill my time on other projects."
"My thanks," you say again, pushing yourself away from the table. With a farewell to Jai Shouxi, you turn and depart from the Spire, heading towards the Inner Market.
If Jai Shouxi needs to know what you wish to purchase from him, you need to know how many points you have to spend. To know that, there is only one course of action before you: one final supply run before your planning begins in earnest.
You have 31 Sect Points and 12 Bronze Talents. Bronze Talents may be exchanged for 5 Sect Points each at the moneychanger and may not be changed back. Pills and Elixirs may be purchased multiple times, materials only once.
Please, in Plan Format, choose what Kong Zhi buys at the Inner Market.
