you have been involved in major campaigns where more soldiers died on Avernus then died in your forces off on campaign

One of those keys into understanding Avernite psychology: being sent to do battle with the enemies of mankind is the safe option.
Avernites cry tears of joy when their children go to the stars to do battle with hordes of orks and the throngs of chaos: they know their loved ones have a greater chance to live to see another year.

EDIT: Vlad'd by @Arlos it seems.

yeah, one of the reasons Avernites have a reputation for courage in battle is that they know that the chance of coming out alive after a five year campaign against the Orks is better then the chance of surviving a five year tour of duty guarding Averus' cities. It also means that while some societies have issues with long term combat deployments Avernites actually like it, as long as their are sufficient PDF at home

Now I'm imagining that in every war where we work with another force, at least ONE Avernus vet is regaling the shocked other-planet soldiers with tales about 'how much easier this is than Avernus'...

Right? Can you imagine how much less stress they have to deal with, not having spiders that can just teleport onto you, bite you, kill you, and teleport away? They must sleep so much more/better.

@Chlof Correction, can you please move Legion of the Damned, Blood Angels curses, and true names to low chance on the Ministorum to-do list?

@Durin, Lin's paragon trait description is cut off. Also, Naval Construction Improvements is supposed to have a DD on it, but it is miswritten to not have one both on last turn's results and this one.

See, there's a few variants to that game.
The basic variant, the version you lay out, is sometimes called First Tour Bragging. As the name implies, its something expected out of an Avernite on their first deployment off world (and generally only acceptable behavior in deployed PDF troops), and is as much about calming themselves down as it is about freaking out the offworlders. See, deployment is one of the few times an Avernite can experience PTSD, instead of the far more common CTSD* (or UTSD**) that makes up Avernite culture. Shocking offworlders can be extremely therapeutic as it allows the Avernite to remind themselves why they endure their homeworld: so others can have a better life.
Then there's Second Tour Bragging. Second Tour Bragging involves underplaying the threats of the homeworld as much as they can while still horrifying the normies. This is generally seen as an Avernite version of gallows humor: the Elysian paradise you are describing is still worse than the current situation.
Little Brother Bragging is a competitive game played on Avernus with offworlders deployed to Avernus: generally only Knight pilots and Space Marines. In this variant, you wax nostalgic about the carefree days of fighting on Mar Sara or facing Hedcrusha on Svartalfheim. Increasingly outrageous accounts of real events are recounted until one side concedes that the other had an easier time of it. General Mineyev is the undisputed master of this game.

EDIT: There are caverner versions of all these variants that they play on normal Avernites.

*Continuing traumatic stress disorder.
**Unending traumatic stress disorder.
