Well that's kind of insulting and nonsensical because I'm clearly indulging in timewasting roleplaying here.@inverted_helix that would make sense if it was being controlled by anything other than a Weapon/Guardian/Great One/Planet Mind. As it is the "Spider Streams & Obscurum Spiders" falls into the same category as all the other shit in the Caverns: a purpose that we cannot intuitively deduce. Just because it looks like it exists solely for trolling doesn't mean jack, Thatguy was up front that it wasn't necessarily serious, and Durin can do whatever he wants with it if he chooses to make it canon. Avernus setting up inexplicable things that function only because it dumps resources into them is canon, and whether or not they serve any purpose other than being a resource dump is up to Durin and somewhat the omake creator. If that does not jive with your sensibilities then you must not like role players and their pointless timewasting shenanigans.
To address the other issues. The caverns in general have a pretty intuitive purpose. They exist for the same reason regions exist. Semi-contained laboratory sites running different projects. The caverns are actually much more normal in that senses because the containment of individual experiments is more obvious and more extensive.
Putting resources into things to make them function is pretty typical of laboratories. You generally have to keep providing resources/fuel to whatever experiment you're running. The nature of the fuel depends on what sort of experiment, for many physics experiments it will be mostly just electricity, but for chemistry or biology experiments there's going to be a lot more complex fuels.
I don't really understand how this would be psychological warfare. If the massive number of spiders were visible and obvious it would be far more terrifying. That would be psychological warfare. If no one knows they're there then there's basically no effect.I guess that is a problem. But the planet is a work of intelligent design, so this could be setup for a lot of other things. Such as psychological warfare to make other spiders more effective, stealth scouts, or a stealthy means of spreading some kind of Avernus psykic super-plague if it decides that is the weapon to go with in a given situation. Edit: maybe there is some sort of warp spider(pattern spiders?) that can possess regular spiders as a daemonhost equivalent, the Obscurum spiders might allow the infiltration of potential hosts into secure areas when teleportation is blocked.
Also there may be a reason why there are so many of them in our cities. Maybe much more that the rest of the planet has on average.
Stealth scouts runs into a couple of issues. It relies on the spiders being intelligent enough to observe, remember, then communicate, which honestly hasn't been in evidence for most of the spider species being used. It also runs into why are other stealth type animals on Avernus so bad then. These can project near impenetrable stealth over millions of others. So why aren't the other stealth type animals on Avernus at least that good at personal stealth?
There's plenty of plagues on Avernus already that haven't needed carrier animals to spread them simply because they're airborne. I expect a super psychic plague by Avernus standards is one that doesn't even need a physical transfer medium at all and is just spread instantly via psychic shenanigans.
I don't even understand what would be the point of the daemonhost one. If you've already infiltrated an Avernus spider to the target area then it could kill the target. What would even be the point of a daemon possessing it? Though this kind of loops back to the issue of they aren't killing/eating people with this invisible army of spiders. So proposing a way that they could do that is just making the issue bigger, not smaller.
