The Werner Family: The First Decade on Avernus
by valkur
Life in the Werner family was changing rapidly as Lord Carl was fixated on enlarging his domain on Avernus. He was a strong man and an Einherjar with a solid career as a Knight as well as the respect of his fellow Knights. However, he was lacking in many things still to truly become the Lord he wanted to be. Chiefly his lack of heirs and sons to fight alongside him was forcing him to take up alliances that forced him to divide the spoils of war against the creatures that invaded his territory.
If Carl could have sons and daughters to take up there thrones alongside his then he would stand a stronger chance of obtaining more land but Avernus was not kind. Recently babes born to his wife Elise died when with there skin turned blue. Be it spiders or some vile spore is a mystery but Carl ordered the room and the whole house cleaned. Again. Elise however was not taking it in stride as he had however and was more melancholy and irritated lately as she went place to place wanting to busy herself with something. His attempts to calm her did not satisfy her and he himself was just too busy leading excursions into the wilds in search of minerals and monster nests as well defending his Estates.
But there was a positive note to all of this thankfully. He had recently acquired Miss Lydia Walker his previous Levy training assistant as a concubine. It was a position she was not sure of at the point since the local Avernites have an expectation of some court making before getting into relationships or at the very least routine patrols together but Lydia was a more pragmatic sort. One who saw her family and communities security strengthened if she was willing to bear children for her Lord. Such a good girl thought Carl to himself.
The Werner realm was situated in a freshly settled plain Terascon. It included a piece of land with Thunder Pens that helped funnel money and elite soldiers into the levy as well as a Fortified Barracks with a training yard adjacent to the Family Compound. The Compound housed Carls Knight 'Crowfeeder' as well as sporting a fittingly Aesir styled Mansion with bones of the local animals decorating the entrances. More of these animals could be found stuffed within the House itself. Additionally, a villa was also adjacent to the Compound where around 1000 thralls and citizens lived under Lord Carl's protection. Some were less enthusiastic about being treated under a different set of laws but were mostly compliant preferring to focus on hunting rare beasts for money and being protected by a Knight whenever they called for help. After all, if something can save your life and your people's life do you not owe it the respects it asks for?
The Werners also had their own security force that they called upon to garrison the realm as well as keeping the locals in line that were called the Gendari who functioned as a militarized police force wearing the colors of the Family. Yellow and Black mainly and sporting military standard weaponry. A luxury to some locals Lord Carl was told.
And yet though Aernus was not a place that seemed to allow good news to not be married with bad news. Literally.
Lord Carl was told by his wife Elise of how much she disapproved of his concubine and asked why he would not grieve for their past children. It's as if the bloody woman was dead set on being so melancholy that Lord Carl simply dismissed her from his bedroom and asked Lydia to take her place for now. Hopefully, he thought to himself, Elise would find a way to unwind herself and be more receptive towards the present."
As things stand, Lord Carl Werner was laying the groundwork to as he diligently contacted suppliers for his Knights maintenance within the Mechanicus and the heavy industries of Avernus which promised to keep him supplied with weapons, ammunition, and fuel for his Knight. Thankfully, The Governor had initiated a solid plan to subsidize these acquisitions to help the Knights quickly and efficiently get to work.
Meanwhile, his allies and fellow immigrants fell daily to the beasts of Avernus as they grew more intelligent and wiser to the tactics of the knights. The beasts somehow began devising more and more cunning ways to ambush Knights as they attempted to venture out in the wild and some like wild Thunder Beasts were consistently cutting off there retreats with charges while Raptors continued to pile pressure. And that is nothing compared to the mighty Dragons that occasionally would challenge the Knights and require whole Maniples of Knights to defend against. It was no wonder the locals were so willing to bend the knee to there Aesir Lords and Ladies if it meant more help against these creatures in the frontier.
I pray to the Emperor that survival for this first decade is achieved and that we are able to keep solidly on track to ensuring the potential of the Werner Family on Avernus.
----------
The Werner Compound was everything one could imagine an affluent family could afford on Avernus if they were Aesir by blood and tradition. Stuffed animal corpses that made the hairs on the back of your head stand up each sporting large teeth, maniples, and creepy eyes. Panic rooms at the end of each hallway stocked with food, weapons, and communicators of all sorts. As well as a large staff of chefs, guards, couriers, and even maids which Lydia's sister Olivia was a part of now.
Marrying a noble was kind of exciting for me because it was like a whole new journey. I was the youngest of my sisters and went to the Officers Academy after graduating instead of going straight to bootcamp. Love was kind of new to me and the negotiating thing was really weird. But I did get my sister her new job and a promise to learn more about being an Aesir. All in all I think i'm happy with my life right now. That's when I met her…
Lady Elise Werner my older wife partner and Lord Carl's first wife. I could definitely see why she was chosen as she strided forth with purpose like a true alpha woman. Her crimson red hair and dark brown eyes on a charming light skin stood out in the hallways as they gave way to clothing made of animal furs from Asgard and some even from Avernus. She could see the pelts of Phase Tigers were a fancy to Elise as she wore them as a long skirt. There was no mistaking that she was a hunter and a strong woman. Perfect!
I walked forward with cautious steps and a smile to Elise who looked at me with an entirely neutral face.
"H-Hello! I'm Lydia the new Concubine."
"Pleased to meet you Miss Werner".
She looked startled at first but then calmed and without thinking...I pecked her at the cheek in a sign of welcoming affection. Smiling and closing my eyes I thought she would return the favor. The next thing I knew I was on the ground as the strength of punch caught my chin.
Being a woman in the Werner House...was not initially a pleasant experience.
