@Durin, are Chaos cults and the like things that native Avernites have to deal with?
Do you mean us, or the native Peoples of Avernus.

Cause for us, we seem to have on the average of a few hundred cultists per year with a population in the billions, which is existent but far from an everyday occurrence.

For the People's of Avernus, they're probably aware of the possibility of things like cults in the abstract, but thousands of years of Avernus evolution-driven Chaos resistance probably makes it more of a hypothetical issue than anything else.

After much though decided to let the Emperor's Talons reach the edge of District 000 before deploying a force able to stop them, and to have your forces be forced off the outer wall after a bloody battle. This should make it seem as if you are being driven back by the invaders without sacrificing to many of your advantages, or making it seem as if it is a trap. When the time comes you will personally lead the Governor's Own and the Varangian Guard against the Emperor's Talons while the majority of your psykers provide assistance against them and the assassins that will also be deployed. While this may be overkill and will leave the rest of your forces without much psychic support for a period you do not want to take chance with an Astartes Chapter so close to Saint Lin, or with hundreds of knock-off Eversor Assassins.

The next wave of Angyls was launched at District 311, the last line of defences between the Chaos forces and the outer wall, from which they will be able to assault your outer defences from both directions. Where you met the Angyls, Chaos Warbands and Stormtroopers with six Psyker Regiments, a hundred thousand Helltroopers and over a million PDF troopers even as your Fellswords moved to engage the enemy Titan's supported by millions of regulars. The lesser Angyls once more found themselves over matched by your psyker regiments, turning their advance into a gradual slog. It took twelve hours and over six million lives for the forces of the Abomination to fight their way though District 311, so that they were now in position to threaten the outer walls of Dis.

As soon as the Abomination force had recovered from taking District 311 the attack on the walls began, with millions of Abomination Elites led by thousands of Chaos Space Marines and tens of thousands of Angyls on one side, hundreds of Titans supported by masses of Leman Russ Battle Tanks on the other and your brave men trapped in between in some of the best fortifications in the sector. If you were willing to reveal your hand you could hold here, as it is you will have to settle for making the enemy bleed. As such you deployed a large number of Battle Psykers, Helguard and Helltroopers to support your PDF in holding back the assault from within while five regiments of Fellswords and a Household of Aesir Knights support the PDF on the walls. While your gathered forces proved to be able to hold off the attack from the inside, for a while at least, the Titans proved to be more of an issue. As they closed your Fellswords opened fire, taking out dozens of Titans with their Neutron Obliterators while Dis' Void Shields protected them from the majority of the return fire. Despite this almost a full Fellsword Regiment fell during the approach. The countless tanks supporting the Titans proved to be far less sturdy, and by the time they reached the walls tens of thousands had been destroyed. However they fulfilled their purpose in preventing you for forcing everything on the Titans. When the Titans reach the walls they quickly carve holes in it with their melee armaments, forcing your men to retreat up and down the walls with heavy losses. However before falling back your men launch once last surge, destroying most of the remaining Titans at the cost of most of your Fellswords and ten million PDF Troopers. After claiming a kkilometre long stretch of the wall the forces of the Abomination started to move into Dis, though at a rate of only a few million an hour. Currently the rather battered remaining Titans are moving though the city towards District 000, following the path of districts claimed by the Abomination. Given the conditions of the city it will take sixteen hours for them to reach it, plus however long it takes for them to take Districts 342 and 344.

As the Angyl led strike force battled its way to the outer wall the Emperor's Talons moved ever deeper into Dis, taking District 045, before moving down though districts 035, 025 and 015. They quickly cut though all defence, in large part due to the presence of the Chapter High Command on the battlefield, providing a concentration of heroes that your forces could not stand before. As the battle continued an ever greater number of Chaos Space Marine Warbands joined this push, until by the time they reached the walls of District 000 over six thousand Chaos Space Marines had gathered. It took a bit over a day for the forces of Chaos to fight their way through four entire districts, and now it is time to take to the field yourself and stop them just before their final goal comes into sight.

You stand on the walls of District 000, the heart of Dis and think on the battle to come. In the coming minutes the Emperor's Talons will begin their attack, with all six hundred surviving Astartes including most of the captains and veterans. They will be spearheading a force of six thousand other Astartes, including over a hundred champions of varies levels and dozens of Sorcerers. Several hundred Abomination Assassins will take advantage of it to sneak past so that they can make an attempt at Saint Lin, who stands less then a kilometer from the walls in the Gubernatorial Palace. To face this force you have the entire Governor's Own, two full companies of the Vargarian Guard, a large force of Helguard and the support of most of the Psyker Choirs of Avernus. Leading this force are some of the greatest heroes of Avernus, Grandmaster Xavier "The Ash Hound", Jane Oakheart "The Inevitable", First Councillor Aryz of the Quartok, Grandmaster Aria and High Grandmaster Ridcully

The battle began with your Biomancers boosting the elite force that you had gathered for this battle, even as the Pyromancers and Telekinetics began a large scale assault on the charging Astartes, killing them by the dozen with enough firepower to annihilate entire brigades of mortal foes. This war has given you a deep understanding of exactly why Astartes are so feared. Then the battle began, with your elite and the eager Vargarian Guard engaging the oncoming Chaos Space Marines even as heroes from both sides started to wreck, havoc, or hunt out enemy heroes. This was a battle out of the old tales of the Horus Heresy, with tens of thousands of power armoured foes clashing using devastating weaponry and powerful psykers. As you had expected the combination of the superior equipment and biomantic support was enough to allow for your elites to fight on par with the Chaos Space marines,or closer enough for greater numbers to tell. The initial push is a massacre, as your men take full advantage of the defences to several thousand Chaos Space Marines at the cost of less then a thousand of your own lives. As the fight continues the advantage offered by the defences of District 000 reduce as the attackers gain a foothold, turning the exchange rate around, though when you take into respective numbers it remains heavily in your favour. It is at this point where duels start forming between heroes on each side, duels that are almost heavily in the favour of the paragons of war that you brought to the field. First Councillor Aryz in particular seems to be enjoying himself to an frankly disturbing level, it seems that he has a lot of repressed hatred for the Imperium that he is now taking out on its darkest heirs. Aria found herself in a duel with the Chief Librarian Aradiel the Bright, a master of the Light Manipulation whose talents in that rare field proved to be devastating, even when crippled by Aria's Null Zone. Elsewhere Jane and Jacob killed two of the Captains of the Emperor's Talons while Xavier and Ridcully moved against the more disorganised Chaos Warbands and lesser Chaos Lords.

As the fight continues the Chaos forces started being ground down into a handful of their greatest warriors as they slowly pushed their way though your defences, though your heroes focused on killing off their oposite numbers to counteract this. It was as this was happening that Mettiuverus Tyrax the Great, Chapter Master of the Emperor's Talons reached you, drawing your attention away from the main battle for a time. Tyrax the Great was a mighty foe, far more then a match for you in normal circumstances, however between the boost provided by Odysseus and the effect that the Black Crystal has on him it turns into an easy fight, though he is tough enough not to make it a short one. Jane and Jacob continue to cut their way though the Emperor's Talons Captains as Aryz engages the 5th Company Captain, Xavier kills the 9th and Aria continues her duel, which she is currently winning by a small amount. Despite her incredible talent for countering psychic effects the skill with which her foe manipulates lasers in the vicinity makes up for this.

As the forces of the Abomination finally push your soldiers into District 000 their numbers continue to drop, to the point where less then a thousand remain while your forces are just as strong as they were at the beginning. As this is going on your heroes kill all but two of the remaining Abomination Heroes, leaving only the 1st Company Captain, who is losing a duel with Xavier, and the 8th Company captain alive. You contributed to this by killing Tyrax the Great, who failed to get past the massive advantage that the Black Crystal offers to you. The last forces of the Abomination are quickly mopped up, with Jacob singlehandedly killing almost two dozen Chaos Terminators whose vaunted armour proves useless before his skill. The final member of the Emperor's Talons to die is the 8th Company Captain, whose desperate brilliance proved to be insufficient to stand up ti the Black Crystal Sword that you wield. As you look over the battlefield youa re pruod about how your forces ahve done, with six thousand Chaos Space marines killed at the price of thirty members of the Vargarain Guard, twenty-eight members of the Governor's Own and a Helguard Regiment.

As you were leading the defence of District 000 Inquisitor Lord Klovis-Ultan commanded the security forces in their effort to deal with the hundreds of Abomination Assassins that used the chaos of the battle to sneak past your district walls. To carry out this task he had your Primaris Execution forces, all of your Telepath and diviner Choirs, Grandmaster Tamia, the Last Hunters, hundreds of Inquisitorial kill teams, hundreds of Elite Psyker Squads, the Phase-Tigers and entire brigades of Helguard. This proved to be moire then sufficient, and all of the assassins were located and killed before they made it halfway to the Gubernatorial Palace, it may have been overkill but you do not want to take risks with the life of Saint Lin. Finally the Chaos Sorcerers continue to summon legions of Angyls into Dis, further reinforcing their holdings in the city.

Currently the forces of the Abomination hold sixteen districts within Dis and are contesting three more, these districts range from District 311, which borders on the outer wall of Dis to District 015, which borders on the FinalWall of Dis. Within these Districts lies almost a hdunred million of Abomination soldiers, enough to see off a light assault by your forces, or all but the most determined of assaults according to their plans. More worryingly are the Titans that are currently preparing to assault your forces in District 342, and will most likely reach the final wall in around twelve hours time.

Currently the forces of the Abomination are pouring into Dis, and by the time that the Titan reach District 000 one point two billion of them will have made it into the city, a seventh of their total number. Fortunatly you are confident that between the Aesir Knights, your anti-Titan forces and some of your elites you will be able to deal with the Titans without to much trouble. You will have to defeat the Titans then which will cause the enemy to begin a summoning ritual for the First Circle Archangyl, which will take around a week. You will have that week to disrupt the ritual, either by disrupting enough of the ritual sites, killing the sorcerers or preventing them getting the 1.25 billion sacrifices that they need.
First you will have to decide on where to meet the Titans
[] District 342- Meeting them in District 342 will result in their defeat before they cause much moire damage to Dis, but at the cost of time.
[] District 145- Meeting them in District 145 will give you some time at the cost of allowing more damage to be done to Dis.
[] District 000- Meeting them in District 000 will give you as much time as possible at the cost of allowing more damage to be done to Dis and letting them get worryingly close to Saint Lin.
[] Write in location

Next you will have to decide on what force to use to support the Titan killers (can choose multiple)
[] The Black Irons- The Black Irons are the most expendable option that still has the ability to make a difference
[] The Psyker Regiments- The Psyker Regiments abilities will give them a real advantage, but not enough to prevent them suffering heavy losses
[] The Vargarain Guard - The Vargarin Guard's equipment and abilities makes them deadly foes for Titans, but the reverse is also true.

@Durin, are Chaos cults and the like things that native Avernites have to deal with?
the odd people who falls to chaos yes, not full blown cults though
@Durin:
1) does Avernus still get the occasional tax dodgers?
2) has any other world begun to incorporate Avernite practices? Specifically the harsh authoritarian kind.
1. yes, there is always someone arrogant enough to think that they can get away with it
2. not really, effective as Avernus' system is the general view is that what works for Avernites does not necessarily work for normal humans who do not have to deal with Avernus

Holy shite that K-D ratio on elites is bonkers.

Yeah, a Regiment of Helguard, but they're expendable, we killed six thousand Astares for fifty-eight of our elites.

That was nothing short of humiliating for the Angels of Death.

Like, if the Heroes not slain by permakills come back, I'll be astonished.

Over 100-1 K-D ratio on Chaos Astares.

Are we sure the Varangian Guard aren't related to Commander Hairgel?

that is vary misleading as the Helguard were also dying, and made up the majority of your combat force by a large margin
the true kill ratio of around 2:3 is far more accurate

Fucking hell did you guys see Jane and Jacob killing one Captain after the other? Shit was like watching Undertaker and Kane back in the Attitude Era. Just the fact that our mortal humans are consistently killing Chaos Space Marine Captains so consistenly is telling

EDIT:

Also I really think we need to aggresively go after the Abominations remaining forces in order to stop them from pulling out a First Circle Angyl. That means sending in the Varangian Guard and HellTroopers to take back the Districts alongside our Champions.

As for the Titans I think we need to go send the Black Irons to take them down. I'm confiendet that they don't need the Astartes to take down the ramining Titans. Hell our own Titants outnumber them as is. The B.Irons are there simply for backup.

huh that wasn't to bad, though with this now we have to hit their numbers...

I have to ask
1) what are the abominations numbers right now? Could we possible wipe out enough for them to come up just short?
2) you said most of their sorcerers are at the ritual sites...how are they dealing with Avernus wild-life? because I know that some...spiders...should be getting past their defenses...
3) most of their rituals are at the main base correct? could we contact the other hives to start sending expeditionary forces when the titans are killed to attack and destroy the ritual sites?
-3i) can we send our sneakiest guys out into these sites to attack them while they are distracted?
-3ii) all we need to do is either destroy enough smaller rituals and possible disturb the bigger ones so that they go somewhat hay-wire to self detonate-is this possible? (such as a melta bomb at a random point of their physical needs for the ritual or killing the incanter for said ritual?)

1. over 8 billion, and maybe
2. some are dying but not to many
3. attack from Dis would be easier due to distance
3i. an option
3ii. yes, how many is enough is hard to predict (it depends on their rolling)

So did any of our other heroes get any breakthroughs (traits) from annihilating the Talons since I know Rotbart was close to a combat paragon (even if he crit-failed his last duel) and Aria only had a chance of going paragon after her previous duel?

I suppose.

Just that it's hard to really think of the Helguard as anything but basically expendable mooks. Elite mooks, but expendable mooks. So them dying is sort of... Okay? It happened?

How many were there, Regiment-wise?

Well, that was something.

I'm glad Aryz got to have some fun. Hopefully this experience also helps him see the difference between us and the Imperium on a more emotional level. Also, found the several thousand HP funny. I doubt they did.

Looks like we managed to finish off their Assassin reserves. Which is good, as they're basically the only way they could take out Lin without achieving military victory.

I expect some pretty traits out of this whole campaign too. Lots of badass hero fights, and being forced to hold back enough that they thought they had a chance meant we were fighting on much more even ground than usual.

Now we need to stop their Titans and then fuck up their summoning. In a week. No pressure I guess...

The Helguard are terribly expensive considering they barely slow down enemy elites.

I'm actually thinking our K/D ratio is low enough I question how effective kitting our Helguard with power armor and advanced weapons really is. I'm pretty sure that we had a K/D ratio below 1 on both fronts. Our elites have really been underperforming for their cost since they've been dying in droves. Even the enemy stormtroopers seem to manage very good kill ratios and they don't even have power armor at all. Though I'm actually suspicious of how many stormtroopers they had to begin with since we've killed so many and there are still thousands of units more to go.

Yeah now we can pretty much deploy as we please.

@Durin So I'm really confused by some of these numbers. Partly because you have chaos warband as both infantry and astartes but they aren't separated out on the Military sheet.
1. How many Astartes are in a chaos warband unit?
2. How many Astartes are left? The Military sheet doesn't split out astartes and infantry in chaos warbands so I've no idea the actual composition there.
3. I don't actually have the data on how many troops they started with, do you still have that? I'm quite curious what our K/D ratio has been for the war so far.

Helguard are not Mook, if you are looking for elite Mook that is Helltroopers, Helguard are both a lot more skilled and a lot better equipped (Neutron Rifles are Scary)
there were 3 regiments, so around 15 times as many as everyone else put together

they have actually been preforming very well, while they have a poor kill rate to Stormtroopers that is when said stormtroopers are supported by masses of Space marines, who are super-elites
as a comparison if instead of the Helguard you had been using PDF you would have lost tens of millions rather then a few hundred thousand, in exchange for your people getting less kills and lasting half the time at most
1. 50
2. around 2k
3. no, very very high though

With how many sorcerers Chaos has been losing, especially the most powerful and skilled ones, this must be an extremely heavy blow to them. Sure for us psykers may as well grow on trees but Avernus is unique when it comes to psyker production while most everywhere else humans only have a very small amount of psykers just for hive worlds.

no i mean if she hadn't finished him off then he would have had an attack against her and she was low enough she probably would have died.
Ah, that makes sense.

Anyways this is great. Now that the enemy elites are dead let's take a slight breather and buy ourselves some time by letting the Titans stomp their way in. Stopping them at District 000 is unacceptably risky, but District 145 sounds good. We can use the fog of war to quietly arrange our armies around the Districts that the enemy controls, and then use the death of the Titans at District 145 as the signal for an all out assault. The goal is to keep going until all Chaos forces inside Dis is dead, with exception of the Battle Barges maybe. Once those areas are surrounded we can set a defensive perimeter and prepare to sally.

@Durin could we take out the Titans with our Superheavy Tanks and Knights only?

yes and no, it is a major blow on the scale on most chaos polities, but for the major ones or the Chaos Gods themselves it is a drop int eh ocean, chaos has always been a galactic force and in Embers they are a lot bigger then in 40k, having total control over massive areas that were once the Imperium

not reliably, the Titans have escorts that would be a major threat to your superheavies and your superheavies do not have enough of an advantage to be sure to win without support.

While the victory at 000 was great, the psyker rolls hurt my soul:
-118 total to ALL their rolls applied to Talon fight as well.
-Our last turn assassinations and attacks in general were worth 5 of their power, that's all.

So, annihilating an entire chaos space marine chapter's highest leadership is impressive right?
Like, on a scale of 1-10, how impressive is it with the casualties we took?
