Well, if we go strictly by BFG rules, then a lot of ships are relatively intact. Roll results 2-7 on 2d6 for catastrophic damage result in intact hull moving in space reflexively (without explosions or anything like that).

Speaking of that, our shipyard is going to be busy when it's fully operational. No need to build anything new for a while - it'll be mainly repair and refit for the ships we might have lost in this battle, and likely for some of Vanaheim's as well. Fortunately that shouldn't take as long as building a ship from scratch, and we can also upgrade them with some of the tech we've found.

We should reseach and double down on the warp sensor next turn for that reason.

To be fair, Vlads version of the Imperium is likely closer to GWs canon than Slamus is. They really press the whole "the most oppressive and cruel regime imaginable" thing wherever possible lately. Even if its not remotely practical, sane, internally consistent or good worldbuilding, and so many people on SV tend to ignore it.

[x] Detach 30 escorts (10 squadrons of 3) from Admiral Freyr's fleet to conduct surveillance of the outer system for inbound Tyranid forces. They are to avoid contact with the current Tyranid fleet. The remaining fleet under Admiral Freyr's command is to close with the Tyranid fleet and destroy the enemy force.
- [X] Organize wargames between the various forces on Alfheim in lieu of them seeing actual combat during this war, with different alliances in the scenarios to improve cooperation between our forces and foster better relations among the sub-sector's militaries.
- [X] Do an extremely thorough sweep of Alfheim for Tyranids that slip through from space, or that preceded the fleet's arrival in system.
- [X] Consult with the King and our fellow generals about public works (including defense works) that we can do while all this extra manpower is on Alfheim.

The other thing is, in an Imperium of millions of worlds, everyone can be right. The Imperium, the Mechanicus, and its institutions are not monoliths. There's massive variance between diferent areas as long as the basic rules are followed, which are pretty simple.
All that matters to me is what incarnation we are going to follow if we go assuming Imperial legitimacy.

Is it going to be this new example which will be whatever we want to make it or take after how the Imperium is in Segmentum Solar and uphold all the baggage that comes with it?

Well, except there are worse in Warhammer. The Dark Eldar come to mind. Daemon worlds aren't exactly paradise, either.

But really, the Imperium is the way it is in no small part thanks to Chaos. Faith in the Emperor actually does provided psychic protection against the Ruinous Powers, and when Chaos Cults can literally pop up anywhere in the Imperium because the Chaos Gods don't need to insert agents from the outside to contact people... well, things get messy.

We are not going strictly by BFG rules

Will we have some bio-samples available from this battle, even if the invasion never reached the ground?

- [X] If possible without undue risk, capture the last few surviving vessels intact to take home for later analysis.

You can't capture Tyranid ships, I don't think.

Also, let's not count our chicken's before they hatch. We need to see what the results are of the final clash before planning anything else. A few Tyranids might actually get through and land, for all we know.

WHichever one we chose, of course. The Imperium doesn't mandate that you be a bastard. It just doesn't mandate that you can't be. All it cares about is that you follow the basic rules, which are really not that onerous. Particularly if warp travel and long range communication collapses, which means tithes are infeasible.

Is it going to be this new example which will be whatever we want to make it or take after how the Imperium is in Segmentum Solar and uphold all the baggage it comes with?

The Imperium in Segementum Solar is probably likely to have more of the nicer bits, because the local governments don't have to be nasty, and the tech level is generally higher.

Dude, how do you want to transport live tyranid ships back to Avernus? Keep in mind, escorts, if they are comparable to our escorts in size, are something like 1km+ monstrosities. Even if the image of a 1km+ angry ship being stuffed in the box and towed back home is strangely hilarious I don`t think that`s practical :D

I deem that greater force concentration on the remaining 'Nid forces to be of greater value than warding against the seemingly unlikely and nebulous risk of some other enemy arriving in the next half-hour or so with no warning whatever.

Eyes on the prey, not the horizon.

Just going to mention this again - I see no point in organizing any kind of wargames until we're 100% sure no Tyranids land. Some could break through and we'd have a minor extermination on the ground we need to do.
It isn't my intent to come out of our defensive stance while the fleet is fighting to do wargames, neither do I think the other generals would agree when we try to organize wargames. We'd definitely want to do a sweep for tyranids first.

Primarily, I just don't want to split the fleet before the battle.

The shadow in the warp is breaking up and that wouldn't be true with another splinter fleet in the subsector. The necrons wouldn't have any trouble catching up to tyranids if they were inclined to do so.

What do people think of leaving behind some of our impalers for Alfheim PDF? They aren't expensive to replace and we know King Zaren worries about improving his defenses.

That's fine, but that comes later, I'm sure durin will give us a chance to decide what to do after the Nids are destroyed, but first I think we ought to finish off the Nids.

I mean praise the emperor and all but my eternal imperial admiral is going ballistic about how that shouldn't have been possible with that loss ratio.

Well, our luck seems to go two ways:
1. We get forced into combat with horribly dangerous things. (Troll King, Chaos Lord, Slaaneshi Gamma trying to seduce us, Helljackal Pack Leader)
2. Our enemies are horribly incompetent. (Very unaware Chaos Space Marines, stupid Necron general, poorly organized Tyranid Splinter Fleet)
