I'm now worried that if we don't trigger this trap, Garkill will retain hundreds of thousands of weirdboyz to carry out other psychic shenanigans. Like a city getting flattened by a mountain sized foot or something.
Holy Emperor he may just try that.

Bugger.

Hopefully we don't lose a single Guard Scout. Now that they have enough Gene Seed to start expanding its super important that these scouts survive.
Not only that the faster they build up the sooner we can try getting the Gray Knight's recruiting.

@Durin, would it be worth springing the trap just so that some of his weirdboyz get killed trying it instead of letting them live and attack Avernus directly?

The crew of one escort saved outnumber a choir a hundredfold. Every day closer the fleet is prepared to risk saves the lives of tens millions of Avernites (which may include the choir and/or their families). The best time to attack a giant is when he's juggling high explosives if killing the giant is worth your life. In this case it is. 10% chance of making a massive difference and a 20% chance of surviving - there'll be several choirs worth of volunteers for each speciality.

OK, looking at the data sheets there are 424 regiment of Svartfal Guard.

Assuming that each guard unit is made of 10,000 people like our Helguard that means there are 4240000 guard, EACH of which as a relic from their vaults.

This number is still inaccurate because the Guard take an additional piece every time they're promoted.

Bloody hell that's a lot of relics.

[X] Low- attacks will mostly consist of long range sniping and pouncing on any Orks that get out of position, best kill ratios but worst target selection and total damage caused. - This option will preserve the largest amount of your fleet at the cost of allowing Avernus to come under very heavy attack, but conversely putting your fleet in a better position to remove the Orks once the reinforcements arrive.

[X] Targets of oppetunity- One option would be to have your fleet target whatever targets are easiest, this would cause the most damage but would not kill enough of any one category to provide an advantage. This option is the middle path, targeting everything equally for little gain but no loss.

[X]Deploy all forces to Attack as they land - Most damage inflicted, heavy forces will suffer notable damage when disengaging

1 week away is still taking a risk. It is a worthwhile risk but it is still there. Knowing the risk is there, we should attempt to mitigate it.

If 1 week out is far enough out that Garkill never spins up the cabals then the choirs don't have to interfere and they don't die. If the cabals do make the attempt then we are playing for half the fleet and trying to play spoiler is worth the cost.

Imagine you are Admiral Freyr. You get dragged out of the warp to the sound of your Navigator's death scream and get to watch as your disordered fleet takes massive casualties as they are dogpiled by Orks. Then you learn that Avernite psykers could have tried to stop that but they didn't try. How do you feel about Avernus now? How do the governors who lent you ships feel?

no it is 10% chance of making any difference at all, even if the difference is not all of the ships are caught
if you want to use psykers to have any real effect you will have to devote a major portion of their numbers to the working, with all of the risks involved in that

you hear that if they tried they almost certainly would have failed and died, to no gain and would therefore be useful in the future

you would not neccecirly lose the game, depending on whether Avernus views you as hostile and if it does how many you can evacuate
Losing the entire Telepathica would be an immense blow.

But more of that - Is it even practical or possible or even somewhat safe to organize the entire Telepathica to do any major psychic acts?

no

I do find myself interested to see if Avernus takes any notice of a million-psyker choir ripping open a warpgate in orbit. Seems like the sort of thing the planet mind would disapprove of.
Not like Garkill has the slightest clue he is dealing with a psyker planet.
