I would suggest that given the current issues, examining the thing to help us build ships at a greater rate in conjunction with upgrading the ship designs may be best. If we just have a few of the advanced designs we may end up with half a dozen very specialised and advanced ships of various kinds that get swamped with numbers, compared to a scenario where we have a single type of a generalist ship, but in a fleet numbering greater than the total of high-tech ships we would make if we focused on expanding the designs available rather than production rate.
The reverse-engineering of the Ship construction technology is very unlikely, but with double down it comes to just under 1/3 (5/9 if reroll is used) chance, and getting it would improve our short-term security from pirates with most of the fleet stranded in terms of making as many ships as possible rather than, necessarily, the best ships as possible.

Our capital ships are able to take out other capital ships, as are our Defense Monitors. The all rounder can also serve that purpose too if it needs to, because it's an all rounder. Not as effectively, but it should be able to fulfill a variety of roles as needed.

Regarding our existing ship designs, the problem is that building them still takes too long. Larger numbers of intact ships mans we can get more ships in working order quickly.

It should also be noted that the hunter killers need to work in teams, and there aren't many intact ships of the class. Further, without sufficient other escorts types available to act as a screen, the hunter killers would be vulnerable to being attacked by other escorts without sufficient defense. I might agree they would be a higher priority if the Avernus fleet didn't have a very small number of escorts right now, but unfortunately we do. We need to fill in our numbers

I still think the Hunter Frigates are the better choice. Can we get enough Cruisers to take on a battleship? But Hunter Frigates are designed for that, and are cheaper and faster to build with our limited shipyards.

Next turn our ship building queue opens up. We start building escorts, probably at three every three years or so. In a couple years our initial work on the Hunter Frigate will be done, probably another multi year action to go before we have schematics. Once we do we can dedicate a small shipyard to turning out a steady flow of them.

We can't build a railway underwater.

As I said, the Escort Destroyer is the all rounder that can fulfill multiple roles, and it's the one we can get the most of to bolster our numbers quickly specifically because we won't have to bother with trying to get any new technologies and because it has the highest number of intact ships to repair. It's the low hanging fruit.

It's also not in the style of the Escort Frigate, which is focused mainly on defense.

Actually, this could be useful to ask about - @durin, do Freya or Admiral Parnell have any opinions on what ships might be most useful to go for first, what with them having naval expertise an all that?
escort either frigate or destroyer and one of the hunters
Escort Cruiser would also be very useful

A hunter frigate would certainly be of better help in taking down the next space hulk that wants to have a go. However, I think a more standard ship would serve us better than what we'd get from Ordinance. That and I don't want to risk a critical failure on the Dark Age super-explosives at least until after we've looked at that super-battleship.

So I found this:
What I'm thinking is we make the skeleton bodies out of metal, then put the brains of some our troops inside the skulls. Equal or perhaps greater effectiveness (only one organ, metal bones, inexhaustible) but with added Fear value.
