@durin

How do our advisers feel about the idea of sending a part of our force forward faster on the last day of the approach to begin constructing the counter siege fortifications? I'd assume this force would consist primarily of Siege Infantry and Mechanized Infantry, probably with Monitors and some Armor regiments.

Or would the risk be too great?

given the sheer level of unknown that you are dealing with the risk would probably be too great

also both of your write in options are allowable and you would have to either attack the city at night or camp just outside the range of the guns with your plan, most likely you would need to spend 2 nights

Yeah, there are what 60-70 million soldier equivalents in the city? If we split our forces in the face of that, there is a good chance that they will sally and kill everyone we send ahead.

Edit: Looked back at projected city pop. between 7 and 80 million? Our intelligence geeks couldn't narrow it down more than that? Wow, so we killed between 42% or 3.75% of local DE forces. Way to go military intel! :p

Dang.

Still... I think that's better than a slow advance.

What do others think, should we speed up the march speed to 12 km/h? That would give us plenty of time to build fortifications when we arrive.

Spend another day resting before assaulting the city?

Hmm.. or even attacking at night to get inside the city. Just a foothold so that their fixed defenses couldn't be targeted on us...

My worry with any quick advance is that cohesion would necessarily drop, giving the DE a chance to make real raids on our disrupted formations.

On the other hand, your fears of artillery are sure to be justified.

If the DE have artillery we will have to camp outside their range to attack once our forces are rested.

I am for pushing ahead 12km/h for 10 hours but setting up camp for the rest of the day and one night once we reach the 20 kilometer point before the city to get some rest. That way we have rested troops to attack the city. With 10% malus for artillery it will be reached in two days.
The problem will be if the DE have Makro-Cannons.
If they have it will be very costly to set up camp anywhere inside their range.

[X] Spend tomorrow fortified and rest your troops-This will give your men more time to prepare themselves for the next section of the campaign but will also give the Dark Eldar more opportunities for night attacks and harassment, though against a better fortified foe.
[X] Advance at a very fast pace (12km/h)- At this speed you will be force to relay on Monitors and Sentinels for scouting greatly reducing the amount of skirmishing possible and increasing the number of ambushes that the Dark Eldar will be able to pull off. You will also rapidly tire your infantry who will be forced to alternate between advancing at a fast jog and riding on your vehicles. One the other hand you will quickly cover the ground between you and the badlands reducing the amount of time that the Dark Eldar have to arras you and prepare their defences.
[X] Advance for ten hours a day- You could push your troops and advance for ten hours a day which would decrease the amount of time that they have to prepare fortifications and fatigue them slightly but would allow you to cover a lot of ground per day. This would consist of one hour setting up fortifications before night, half an hour taking them down in the morning and one half hour rest and reorganisation breaks.

[X] Have Lieutenant-General Agani lead the light infantry to ambush the Dark Eldar night attacks (after we start the sprint to the city, not during the night we are resting behind fortifications)- This will reduce the number of night attacks that reach your main forces but will lead to your light infantry engaging in night fighting with the Dark Eldar who are far better at it and suffering heavy casualties.
[X] Have Lieutenant-General Christianson lead his Rough Riders to support the Light Infantry in countering the Dark Eldar night attacks. They will serve as a rapid response reinforcement force to help cover Light Infantry retreats after ambushes - This will reduce the number of causalities that the Light Infantry suffers. On the other hand your Rough Riders will suffer very heavy casualties from fighting in the dark.
[X] Have Lieutenant-General Khol use Monitors to locate raiding parties for the Basilisks to fire on. - This will cause a moderate degree of casualties to the raiding parties and provide a level of warning of ambushes. It will inflict some casualties on your Monitors and will slow your forces by around 10% as the Basilisks have to constantly stop and fire.
[X] Have Lieutenant-General Richards use her Drop Troopers to engage any Dark Eldar harassment groups- This will stop a decent portion of harassment groups and inflict heavy casualties on them at the cost of your Drop Troopers also suffering heavy casualties.

@durin
1. How effective were Khol with his artillery? Effectivety as in 'They caused x% of the confirmed kills of DE and they spotted x% of the launched DE raids and armbrushes.
2. To compare how operated the Rough Raiders and MechInf? How many X% of the raids and armbrushes and Y% of kills go to them and how many Z% were a compination and how many W% were missed?
3. Is the following write in doable?
[X] Rest before assault- Set up camp outside the DE expected artillery range for the rest of one day and one night to start the assault with rested troops.

Your plan does not say how fast we are going to march.

Your plan does not say how fast we are going to march.
Thanks. Added it.
What are your thoughts on that?
@durin
1. If we camp between 25 and 30 km away from the city and are still outside of the DE artillery range (we do not even know if they have artillery and/or Macro-Cannons). Can we spent the night shooting their defences with our artillery?
2. Have we heard back from the other army groups about Macro-Cannons and/or artillery range?

My feeling is that moving so fast makes us pretty vulnerable during the march, and also will exhaust us quite a bit, particularly the Light Infantry.

On the other hand... we might be able to avoid two nights without defenses... so maybe it's worth it?

I think I'm going to stick with my plan for now, but I certainly feel there are arguments to be made for both plans.

Over the last week both the Imperial Trust Guard and the Timeless Army have been advancing on the Dark Eldar against varying levels of opposition. The Imperial Trust Guard has had the misfortune of being up against the best of the Dark Eldar generals who has been able to greatly slow their advance and inflict heavy losses despite the small force that he has under his command. In reaction Marshall Stefansson has slowed his advance to a crawl and is making heavy use of his pre-fabricated fortresses. You estimate it will take around two weeks for him to lay siege to the Dark Eldar fortress he has been assigned.

The Timeless Army despite facing a larger force has been able to advance with little issue due to Dark Eldar raids having stopped after the first groups were exterminated by Task Force Hammer. It is believes that after this experience the Dark Eldar general decided that it was a losing proposition trying to raid the Timeless Army. You estimate that it will take a few days for the Timeless Army to reach the fortress guarding the pass.

In space Admiral Freyr has been slowly taking out the Orbital Weapons Platforms and has destroyed twenty-three at the cost of a pair of cruisers and thirteen escorts.

pretty much, they had some big bonus on those rolls as the Dark Eldar did not expect one and a half million power armored enemies
NO ONE EXPECTS THE TASK FORCE HAMMER, our chief weapon is surprise, surprise and absurd quantities of power armour ... surprise and power armour ... uh, our two chief weapons are surprise, power armour and a fanatical devotion to the Emperor! ... Wait, I'll try this again...

"...repeat that again."

"Master?"

"I said, repeat that again, or else I'll choke your worthless spawn to death with the kidneys I will rip from your still alive body."

"One point five million power armour troopers."

Yrzard Bonereaver, Archon of the Despoiled Cockle, stared mutely at his subordinate. "You are mistaken," he said.

"Of course, Archon," said the aide. "I'll go have the corpses of our raiding parties flayed for their insubordination."

Twenty minutes later, after having his insubordinate aide flayed alive instead, Yrzard stopped to review the battle logs and found, to his great dismay that perhaps the skinless idiot now twitching on the floor hadn't forgotten to carry the one. He turned to the gorgeous, blood-soaked Lhamaean at his side and grimaced. "One and a half million power armoured infantry. I have not seen the mon-keigh field power armour in this magnitude since ... it couldn't have been less than eleven thousand years ago now, not long after the times of their Great Crusaders. Perhaps the early campaigns of their religious battle-tramps."

"Haven't there always been a few million power armour users?" asked the Lhamaean. "Space Marines, some of their pathetic machine worshippers, their battle-tramps. Surely they have massed before now."

"Not any more they don't," said Yrzard. "The final death of their fool god saw to that. But we are out in the middle of a wasteland, only a handful of inhabited worlds are here. And these are no Space Marines, they are common mon-keigh. But the hardware they have brought with them... Twenty-eight titans, a hundred Knight Titans, over two-hundred super-heavy tanks, thousands of heavy tanks ... this is beyond the worst possible nightmares of the Supreme Archon. There should be no such force in this sector."

"What will you do, master?" asked the Lhamaean.

"Call off the harassment," said Yrzard. "Watch for weaknesses, but there's no point assaulting a screen consisting of power armour each toting weapons we could mount on a Raider. We'll deal with them when they reach the fortress."

The Lhamaean turned and snapped her fingers, sending underlings scampering to carry out the orders. Yrzard say back upon an elaborate command chair and heaved a sigh.

"A million and a half power armour users, this is obscene."

The still-twitching, dying figure on the ground gathered up his last reserve of strength to gasp, "Told you so."
