No, they did quite fair considering what they were up against. Dark Eldar ships are glass cannons, and they can do a lot of damage - I think only the Necrons do better in terms of damage pound for pound. This could have gone significantly worse
As Durin pointed out, yes it could have gone a lot worse, but that is still a terrible trade off for any attacking force.

I mean, this isn't even the main defending force if there are more ships lying in wait.

The notation in the historical record:
Admiral Freyr has managed to determine that his Dark Eldar counterpart is a significantly better admiral then he is which when combined with the situation means that the Dark Eldar will be able to cause a lot of damage.

The actual conversation:
Freyr: "Rotbart, shut the feth up and get off my line, this asshole I'm dealing with is some kind of Throne-damned Dark Eldar genius and he is kicking my ass all over the fething Fjol System! ... what? ... Yeah, of course, I can beat him, but-hang on... Emperor's Teeth, Ridcully, that's impossible, light cruisers can't ... wow. Glad I wasn't on that ship. Makes up for the Grand Cruiser. Anyway, Rotbart, this is going to hurt more than you did when you found out my sister's Little Black Book had three volumes, now let me get back to this before I start using your transport for Throne-damned bait, okay!?"

I'm not sure how freyr's quality compared to the admirals in the imperium, but I think this was probally a better result than they usually saw. Especially with a master diviner in charge of an entire choir and improved sensors helping out. :(

Now that we're closer to the planet, do we see any orbital defenses that don't look complete?

I'm wondering if we made the time limit, at least partially, or if attacking right away was our only opportunity for that.

@durin, since we are already engaged with the DE void assets, would you mind revealing what we would have faced if we had chosen to wait a few years before attacking instead?

Wait wait wait. How much of the 40mil was us? As in, Avernite troops.

Because if the Avernites took huge losses here, we are fucked.

On the less grim side, all of those Cap ships were obsolete and are thus relatively expendable.
Unfortunately at our rate of shipbuilding nothing is actually expendable, Cap ships are Cap ships and we are not flush with those to begin with. My main concern is the the Eldar might be going with a hammer and anvil approach. Those defense stations plus known ships are the anvil and the fleet we haven't seen is the hammer. If they can pin us above the planet while we try to land transports we're in for a lot of hurt.

Considering the way durin spoke about this assault, im feeling fairly pessimistic about the ground assault. Even more so, now that we've lost 40 mil troops before even reaching the ground. Lets hope Xavier + Surt combined pull off some truly heroically insane stunts to win this war. And even after we win, there will probably be DE guerillas to deal with, urgh.

So to help out im chucking my 10+ to the dice rolls with the defense stations.

I hope it helps out.

In particular the destruction of almost all of the Light Cruisers in the Imperial Trust fleet has shown exactly how much the Dark Eldar have been focusing on them and how useful their speed and fire-power is in convoy defence.
...

...

They were focusing on Light Cruisers instead of the big battlewagons... Huh. Either they were more interested in hitting transports before the landings, or these guys are hitting the Panic Button to their friends back in Commorragh to send fleet aid and they wanted to lay out the welcome mat. Feeling a touch nervous about that all of a sudden.

We suffered twice the looses of the DE, roughly.

How are we -as in Rotbart- going to survive landing when the DE start destroying our transports while the fleet is busy creating a corridor to land?
