The Dawi in Arda (Hiatus)

If the Kidnappers are honest with themselves after violating guest rights, they will be offering themselves up for Slayerhood.

Only way they do not become Slayers is if the Noldor spare them.

"I am a dwarf, my honor is my life and without it I am nothing. I shall become a Slayer, I shall seek redemption in the eyes of my ancestors. I shall become as death to my enemies untill I face he that takes my life and my shame"
Ancestral Honor by Gav Thorpe.
I agree. The reason my write in isnt for slayer oath directly is because the Noldor have no reason to trust the lengths a Slayer will go to to repay their shame. By making them soldiers under Elrond's control the victims can trust that the kidnappers are being worked hard and not just getting a slap on the wrist hidden behind another cultures big words.

When they take the Slayer oath they are considered dead.

They lose their family, their clan, everything. Its like a living burial, the Noldor must understand the gravity of such an action. The Noldor should be present for the lesson perhaps?

We know and understand this and I'm sure Elrond and a few other very wise Noldor can as well. But for most Noldor they only learned we exist a few years ago and while they were told we are different from dwarves they haven't had a reason to learn and pay attention to the details.

As a comparison, if you asked an American diplomat the culture and values of different Eastern European people they wouldn't know everything but you would expect them to get the biggest stuff right.
Ask a regular American citizen the same questions and they probably couldn't name most of the countries that are considered Easterm European.

We aren't trying to show our countrymen how serious we are. We are trying to show the common people of another country how serious we are. And that requires taking our punishment and finding the closest fit in the other countries values.

The first is a map of the Dwarvish Realms of the First Age of the Sun. It details the locations of Nogrod and Belegost in the Ered Luin and the lesser halls that each claimed for their own that stretched north and south from them.

But the Ered Luin seem a nearer place by far and the ruins of those folk might be reached with ease.
Now that is something I'd be willing to countenance an expedition to.

@Warkeymon now that we have the maps is it possible to send a Throng or two (probably the Eotheod) west to make contact with viable trade partners and merchants, informing them the High Pass is secure and trade is possible there, with the end goal at the Blue Mountains to search them for anything and everything useful or interesting?

[X] Write-In a Recompense: 15-20 Silver ingots (we are getting 10 a turn, this pays it off and gets it done as simply as possible. Half again shows we take it seriously without going too far into appeasement territory.)

[X] Write-In a Reckoning: At the very least those that participated in the attempted kidnapping will be given over to the Loremasters to study the laws and traditions passed down by the Ancestor gods as to the treatment of guests, the seriousness of the dishonor and Shame of attempting to kidnap a guest of the hold, and are to be taught as very young beardlings if that is how they wish to behave. They are to choose their own punishment from amongst the records as to how such behavior was dealt with in the past, with Lord Elrond and the families of the harmed being able to weigh in and veto if the punishment is deemed insufficient no less than once each. Should this be unacceptable, we can refer to the 'other shoes' ruling we provided before and offer to let those that attempted to kidnap provide labor to the families of the harmed and in their spare time receive education as to the laws and traditions of the Noldor as to how such actions are punished in their lands. The main thrust of our Reckoning should be that we take such violations of the guest rights and protections, as well as our hospitality very seriously and will not allow a precedent for future actions like this to be accepted.

Nat 1 really sucks. Now we lose both dice and respect, not to mention this being a great dishonour.

Since pushing for a Slayer Oath is something no sane King should go for (Dawi are a finite resource more than ever), a strict punshiment of a different sort is called for. What is important is that we punish the offenders ourselves, with Elrond having something to say of course, but doing so according to our own records and laws. Nothing Noldor-like to be mettled out.

If we can rebuild something like Arnor and make it prosper we could tax the merchants going from Arnor to new Rhoan, it would be a lot more trade than between unpopulated regions, and would be monopolized by us.

*screams into the void*

Why alert system did you have to fuck up on literally the most important time for omakes?! No Rhunki? Nai, nai!

That's a Grudgin'.

*throws a server into a dumpster*

Turn 20, expect an omake for a Rhunki to appear. So long as there are no more grudge worthy equipment malfunctions.

So thinking next turns actions, I want to put the Eothed on building the guest housing, hopefully having human input from the start will avoid issues like the stone beds in the guest halls. For throng actions I'm thinking we should send the north east and eotheod out searching for more survivors. I like @EVA-Saiyajin's thoughts on sending a throng west, either the south throng or the west throng to set up trade. The last throng can stay home to guard the hold.

@Warkeymon if we take the Equip the Eotheod it says it costs 10 steel is that per dice or per attempt? e.g. if we put two warsmith on the action would it cost 20 steel or 10?

E: Other thoughts we need to start a new set of clanhalls so we have space when the carpenters graduate. I've said it before but I want to put the stonemasons on level 0 of the west peak. We should also think about starting on the north pass it is still just one wall.

Speaking of more options for trade, maybe someone better versed in lotr lore could chime in here but which human, dwarf, elf and hobbit settlements are even around at this time?

Scatha was killed in TA 2000 so we should be in TA 2005.

Arthedain fell in TA 1974, which would leave us with the Dúnedain Rangers, Bree-land and the Hobbits in Eriador to the West and then further west the blue mountains. The Dúnedain are scattered and we already have connections to Imladris, Bree-land might be our best bet here besides the blue mountains but I am not sure if there are any dwarves currently living there. Gondor is too far south and Dale and the Kingdom under the Mountain have not been created yet. I agree with @EVA-Saiyajin that sending a throng west is probably our best bet for now but maybe we should also look into sending some people south to Lothlorien and the Mirkwood?

I just realized that I was mistaken about the Kingdom under the Mountain, it was created in TA 1999. How do we feel about trading with them?

The Dúnedain should still have a somewhat big pop, so if we could get in contact with them, we might be able to help them start up there kingdome again, sure it would be small in the start, but it would grow in time

What exactly went wrong? Did you not get an alert for the update?

Basically. I didn't get any alerts about the thread until after the vote had been called and writing had begun. I consider that 'too late' to try and swing with an omake.' And I had to manually check up on the thread.

I get alerts now though as long as it doesn't screw up again.

The Hobbits, after the Ring was destroyed, left Rivendell on October 5 and arrived at the Shire on November 3. After defeating Saruman and spending a few years, they left for the Grey Havens on the 21st of September, reaching the Firth of Lhune on the 29th, meandering south a little first.

So a little under a month and a half, add…3-5 days between the Karak and Rivendell.

Now they were on ponies or horses but, and I haven't checked Return of the King, just my Atlas of Middle Earth, they probably were taking their time.

I figure 3 months combined trip back and forth, a few weeks meandering to settlements and civilization, still leaves months to explore the Blue Mountains.

I would prefer to bring the Eotheod to show everyone how amenable we are to cooperation with other races and to make use of their horses for quick detours off the straight path.

The safest places to trade so far are to the West. North, East and South are infested with Urks or simply have nobody to trade with, which makes them dangerous and unprofitable. The only thing we could try is to establish a trading outpost next to a large river, such as the Anduin and use its waters for fast traveling and trading, while shortening the land trip from the outpost to our Karak. Yet, the danger of attack is always there.

A part of me wants to establish some sort of relations with Gondor. It'd be at least worth to send a minor delegation to say hello for now.

Big buyers. They'll want stuff Dawi can provide.

Also meeting the dunedain and introducing the Eotheod is a good idea. Maybe convince Elrond that a year at the Karak for the Dunedain and a year at Rivendell for the King. Hopefully they'll make friends.

I think Sertorius' idea is grand, but maybe post Eotheod restoration as that'll cut down on the Urk things in that area? Or another pop dump at turn 40. So we can have more warriors and simply more people to manage things.
