The Dawi in Arda (Hiatus)

[X] Write-In: Ask him of his clan and lineage's history, of the urk, grobi, and harbgrobi that plague these mountains. Speak of your slaying of the under city that was infested with the grobi so they might know that any such Grudges they bear against them can be struck out. Ask about the second moon.

[X] Write-In: Speak to him of the Great Eagles that circle your goat flocks, and of the one beardling that did good service in guarding a goat from them...if young enough to succumb to the allure of a youngling great eagle himself. Ask Glorfindel what he knows of the Gold Sickness these 'rings of sauron' cause, for if you are to mediate, you must be able to account for such alterations of the mind.

Lord of Udrabax
At Udrabax you spend some time conversing with the Lord of that Hall through Glorfindel. Write-In a topic be it from the Fated Place or Middle-Earth to discuss with the Lord of Udrabax.

Glorfindel
Your journey saw plenty of time to speak with Glorfindel. Write-In a topic be it from the Fated Place or Middle-Earth to discuss with him.

I actually don't think this is a huge issue, we hosted Elrond and Glorfindel in our own quarters. Which admittedly from memory are a bit plain for a lord's residense. But they didn't complain/didnt seem particularly put out so i don't think a dwarf or human king would either
Also, considering what we saw, what dawi consider "adequate for lords" might come off as extremely opulent in middle earth.

If our guest room is better than their throne room... It might be unintentional, but it's also a mighty T-pose.

Oh and we have to be sure, that whatever delegation visits us later on, we simply HAVE to teach them Khazalid, so that they may pass on that knowledge back to their Hold.

It's a Grudge not to be able to speak with our kin in the tongue of our Ancestors.

The Elgi-Noldor matter is a slippery one, but treating Dawi as not Dawi? Only the Dawi Zharr have that doubious honour and we absolutely do not want to add to that list. They must be brought up to speed in the proper way as soon a possible. We have to do it for our own well-being as a coping mechanism, since the news will be crushing back home.

But what if we simply decide they are sons of Durin rather than Dawi. They call themselves dwarves but look at their halls and look how they act. Are these the actions and pride of true Dawi? This will surely take much tugging of beards and grumbling from the elders to decide one way or the other

This Durin is an Ancestor as well, not one we know, but still. Think of them as uncivilised kin found in some dump in the jungle. Teaching them the language, customs and other ways of the Dawi is progress and strengthens the Karaz Ankor.

Considering the local Elves aren't counted as Elgi, I'd say there's a chance that should the local dwarves not measure up they might not be counted as 'Dawi', or perhaps a much lesser fallen kin like the Dawi Zharr, but much much much lesser in terms of killiness.

If we're considering coal liquifaction, might we be able to compress the coal for creating industrial diamonds? I can imagine they would be useful for a lot of edged tools... And tbh without the 'natural' diamond industry steering public opinion there's no reason artificial diamonds can't be used for decorative purposes either.

This would probably require a rune worked tool though, and it feels more like something which might occur in the Snorri quest than here, but still :p
It'd be funny if spies tried to find our diamond mines and kept running into coal

We could use it on this.

"The Earth Borer is a six-wheeled, steam-powered vehicle with front and side armour to protect the machine and its operator from flying debris. A finely polished sheet of clear quartz is mounted at the front of the drill, so that the operator can see the drill bit and rock face ahead. The Bhlak and Dekkur drill bit is made of the hardest steel, studded with diamonds. It is powered by one of the machine's two steam engines; the other powers the wheels. The Earth Borer consumes a lot of fuel, and it is only used on exceedingly hard rock (such as granite), or when a tunnel must be constructed quickly."

The Dawi for old cultural reasons are against the use of machines to create tunnels. The only trustworthy tunnel is one worked by Dawi and their picks. So it has been since Grungi and not even Morgrim ever suggested that it was worthwhile making a mining machine.

Unless we use blasting charges, which was the original purpose of gunpowder. Using it to power weapons was just a byproduct.

Oh. But I picked this up from the wiki.

Here is a more full text.

"Not all Dwarf technological expertise is dedicated to the arts of war. One of the earliest applications of steam power was the first version of the Earth Borer mining drill, which replaced the earlier hydraulic mining drill.

"At first, Dwarfs mounted a huge, steam-powered drill onto a modified cannon carriage. The drill was made of the finest steel and it powered by a steam engine that formed most of the bulk of the device. Success was limited, but it gave the engineers some much valued sessions which led to improvements. The first step involved increasing the efficiency and performance of the engine so that the drill could be rotated at higher speeds. Next, the drill bit was strengthened so that the edge would not dull as quickly. To achieve this goal, engineers coaxed the Jewelsmiths' craftguild into providing diamond chips which the engineers embedded into the drill's cutting edge. Finally, engineers devised a means to protect the machine's operators while propelling the drill. That cannon carriage was then modified so that a second steam engine could power the carriage's drive."

They also developed a similar machine to mine Gromril.

"Seeking to forge a path straight through the mountains, the Engineers of Kraka Drak converted their revolutionary 'tractator engine' from gigantic rock grinder to a mobile garrison, fitting it with multiple Organ Guns and Steam Cannons. The Engineers carved a bloody path through the Orc tribes that infested the mountains, though they ran so short of coal that the motive power was often provided by goblinoid corpses set aflame by potent liquor.

The tractator engine's finest hour came when the Engineers and their men were assailed by the heavily armoured Black Orcs of Red Eye Mountain – the cunning Engineers pivoted the tractator's engine's crane arm so that its giant runic lodestone, originally intended for gromril mining, dragged the plate-clad Orcs off the edge of the mountain path."

Unless we use blasting charges, which was the original purpose of gunpowder. Using it to power weapons was just a byproduct.

Blasting charges aren't used for making tunnels since they weaken the rock around the area that they dig out. They're used inside mines to break up an area to make it easier to haul out.

That tractator seems more like a large APC/tank than a drill.

Steam power in mining, or other engines such as the newer alcohol engines, are used generally in pumping out water and ventilating tunnels in the poor environments of the Depths. The biggest variation from that model is the Nautilus used by Zhufbar Engineers to go mining for Gromril in the flooded tunnels of Karak Varn or sometimes in the Black Water itself. That does have drills on it but only as a necessity.

Edit: I've just re-read the bit about the gromril mining runic lodestone. I've never considered the idea of using a big rune magnet to mine gromril but I'll consider it for if you ever get an engineering Rhunrikki.

I admit to being interested in the raven-taming. Aerial communication that is much more subtle and less expensive than Gyros would be an immense boon.

@Warkeymon
Can Hold structures be upgraded with things such as Large, Fortified, or Decorated after the initial chosen design is complete?
Yes but it is very expensive 70 per addition, one addition at a time. So anything you roll over the 70 is lost. There's a reason as the hold basics have been completed we've moved over to fully pimping halls out as we build them.

Their initial report is that the entire thing is held together by force of will rather than craftsmanship and the Elders are quick to remind them that Grobi work, even tinkered by Dawi, is Grobi work. But they make firm arguments that since each piece of the machine was taken apart, studied and then replaced with Dawi work then the total machine that they have ended up with is of Dawi make.
Ship of Theseus logic there.
