The Dawi in Arda (Hiatus)

Feels like we're about 2 turns away from being able to start making powder based weaponry if we can locate saltpeter. Since we only have the one engineering dice balancing facilities, defense weapons, and field pieces will probably be tricky.

Saltpeter is well within our capabilities to make. We have all the resources we need within our hold already.

(My super long term project are the Framsburg Outriders, might be a hundred years from now but we will see Carbine wielding cavalry one day)

My only worry about making fun powder weaponry is that the forces of Mordor being able to copy the technology.

They've been described as the more "industrial" of the peoples of middle earth if that makes sense, and losing something as big as guns to the uncountable hordes of orcs and goblins is something to be seriously worried about.

yes we do, making a second hall could lte us train two dices at the same time.
I'd hold off on that until we see how the pop growth mechanic works. If all our existing dice get promoted and we get 1 new beardling dice per original clan that would give us 6 beardling dice for the next 20 years but we can train clan trades in 3 years so we could eaisly train the entire lot of them with just 1 lorehall.

I was catching up on the quest and I was thinking of a crown for our Queen.

Made from Silver (Mithril if we can) and embedded with diamonds, this Tiara of Adamant would bear the runes of Warding, Courage, and... Fate? We use fate a lot, so maybe Fortitude.

The Strength of Valaya protects the Queen and helps lift her through the tough times, warming her heart and soul, and protecting her body.

I'm also pondering a Rune of Starlight inspiration omake born from the gift the Queen received. It's a derivative of the Rune of Light, the Dawi like it because it's a gentle light for softer, safer places, like nurseries. But maybe it does a little more than produce a nice even light?

What we need is more fertility omakes, and more royal Garazi. We don't really need another engineer clan. We just need the clan we have to get bigger, which it will get.

What would we need to set up in order to field Irondrakes and Flame Cannons?

Well, we need our Engineer Clan to produce a Chemist die, and then we can probably start doing the things we need to do.

We can make naptha from coal and coke, and a petroleum based fuel is most likely needed for Irondrakes and Flame Cannons. Or find a natural source which is unlikely given Tolkien's world building.

Good Gondorian steel counts for many times its number in Orcs, even after the horrific plague devastated the population they still held the line against numerically superior enemies.
The rural, "less-industrialized" west has a qualitative advantage over Mordors forces.

If anything the forces of Darkness have regressed technologically compared to the early ages when they apparently had flying machines. Mordor no longer has them anymore, even though crafting them would be a huge boon.

Is it possible they could reverse engineer gunpowder? yes.

But if handled carefully we can keep it away from them long enough to have a huge head-start.

Consider this

If they start building up powder stores, they become strategic sabotage targets because they sure aren't going to be as secure as our stuff.

@Warkeymon
Is 1 ingot of Gromril more potent in runic effects than 20 in steel?

Imo, the next thing we should make is Portable antimagic, so we can go to Belegost and Nogrod again.
Create a banner with two Runes of Sanctuary and one of Courage, a trifecta with the Light of Earendil set in the center in a core of adamant. Let's see how those shadow things like that.

We can also bring it into the depths to hunt the Thing in the Depths.

I'm not really worried about other factions figuring out Blackpowder weapons from us. It would either require them somehow puzzling out the recipe themselves, and they could probably get one ingredient from us, Sulphur, based on the fact that we'll be buying it in bulk from others, but they'll have to figure out Charcoal and Saltpeter on their own.

They'll have no clue to Saltpeter as we'll be producing it within the Hold and I think they would dismiss Charcoal as a possibility simply because of how utterly mundane it is. Even if they know we're making it in large quantities by finding our charcoal pits they'll simply assume we're doing so to fuel our forges and light sources.

I'm also not overly worried about them getting samples from us because of just how tight Dawi info-sec is. We're used to dealing with the likes of Chaos and the Skaven. Good fucking luck.

It's something we will need to produce, not buy

I haven't seen a definitive guide to how the Dawi source Saltpeter so I'm just flailing blindly TBH.

It looks like some processing will be needed no matter what even if they're mining nitritite, starting with crystallized bat guano, or making it using some of the fertilizer setups described earlier in the thread. If the dawi haven't worked out the fertilizer method (sidenote: do they got Warhammer Penicillin?) then locating sources doesn't seem like an unreasonable action for the quest.

Edit: TLDR I should have been more clear and said locate whatever is needed to make saltpeter the dawi way or produce a facility to create it if we need a crafting building. Sorry for being unclear.

Saltpeter is super low-tech.
At its simplest, it can be made with (Horse Manure + Urine + Straw)

But It can also be made in huge batches via industrial processes.

Speaking of blackpowder weapons though, I've had some thoughts.

First I'd like for us to offer our Quarllers the chance to switch over to being Thunderers. Some will, some won't.

Second I'd like to instate that all of our fighters, ranged and melee, keep a couple of simple hold-out pistols on them for emergencies and so that if we're fighting an enemy that can't be easily reached to fight up close our warriors aren't simply twiddling their thumbs.

And as for Runic firepower I'm thinking an oversized cannon with triple Rune of Burning and an advanced multi-shot Runic Pistol for us with Accuarcy, Penetrating, and Burning

I think making anything runed for the queen is a very bad idea for a while, currently we do not have an heir even remotly close to the correct age, so this means that sending the royal couple to figth tohgeter is just a very dumb idea, if something were to go wrong we could lose both of them.
Runes makes great force multipliers, so making a great crown that should not be used in battle is just a waste of runelord action, I mean our runelord could make a banner that stops anything magical, and a banner that would be used.
This will save Dawi lives, a crown that is dangerous to use would not, regardless of the runic combo.
So I belive making runic stuff for many people first would be better.
Sure I did not meant to make more engi dice NOW, for later yes.

Hypothetically speaking would any creation with the Light of Earendil be considered by the masses an appropriate use of Gromril?
